Javan has one significant asset that I haven't experienced at other Persian restaurants - a host who is very personable, informative and has great suggestions. I believe his name is Alex, and his gracious hospitality went a long way. We brought guests from out of town - first time in L.A., and we wanted to enjoy something that would be unique to them. Alex took things from there, making excellent selections that suited our party. We enjoyed everything, from the kashk o'bademjan, baba ganoush, date salad, mast O'khiar and fresh baked bread to the wonderful rices (Albalo polo, zereshk polo, baghali polo) which accompanied the lamb shank and platter of all the skewered meats. The cherry drink perfectly paired with the several complex and layered flavors of the dishes. Alex guided us through and explained how they prepare the various dishes. We were already familiar with Persian cuisine - our guests were not. But this was enlightening for all. Alex's storied and extensive culinary background was apparent in the balance of seasonings in all that we tried. The portions are more than generous, as we all had our fill with boxes of food to gladly bring home. The layout of dining room is pleasant and feels roomy. Just call ahead for reservations and they will take care of everything else. With so many choices for Persian cuisine in this general area, Javan is top tier for us. read more

We Went to Javan for lunch because my favorite Persian restaurant in Westwood was packed and there was a thirty-minute wait to be seated. Javan, however, was empty with only one table occupied. I understood why when the menus came. There were only 6 rice bowls on the lunch menu and the regular menu was extremely pricey. our lunch for two came to $110, and we had no deserts or coffee or tea. Just the main dish and one appetizer made of yogurt and cucumber, masto khiar. The food was ok. I have had better. I just moved back to L.A. after 6 years of being away and was surprised when I found out Javan was back in business again. At this rate, I doubt they can stay in business for long. read more

And even more odd -- there's like this white piano awkwardly stationed in the middle of the restaurant. Since Friday and Saturday nights are the 'busy' hours for restaurants; if no piano player can be found then, why have a piano at all? How much mileage can this ivory bring if it's not gonna be used on the supposed 'busiest hours?' It's just bizarrely placed. I came here with a date. She ordered some sorta Greek salad, dolmeh (stuffed grape leaves) , and I ordered the chicken kabob. The Greek salad was for sure not properly tossed together; And with a dressing with any semblance of any house made signature for that matter. It was super dry. Came with feta -- but sparsely found. The dolmeh appetizer was served hot, and super sweet. Almost tasted syrupy. Not familiar with any of this dish's variation across the many diverse Mediterranean landscape, but this was absolutely disgusting. It gave my date stomach cramps. It tasted almost dessert-like. My chicken kabob was just okay, and slightly over-charred in certain places. For the 24 dollar price-tag, it better be super juicy. Wasn't. The basmati rice was atrociously served. Super dry, no seasoning. Quality expected for maybe a lunch special grind, but absolutely unacceptable for what Javan was repp'ing. 65$ for this? Lol. No thanks. read more

Really surprised to see the vegan options on the menu and just had to try it! Even the rice was perfect (ie. not oily). The service was very helpful, attentive, and friendly, and the atmosphere was calm and romantic (some Natalie Cole playing in the background the evening I was there). Dinner here was excellent. if you are in LA, you don't want ti miss having a meal here. I called ahead and spoke to Alex about my daughter's food allergies. He informed me emphatically that the restaurant can accommodate and the food would be delicious. We informed our waiter the same and they certainly did make the food with our daughter's allergic restrictions. There was a lot to choose from the menu so we opted for the Javan Family combo with special rice combination. When the food came out there were so much. The combination rice included white rice, rice with dill and lima beans. Lastly, you don't want to miss cherry rice. It was unique to us and absolutely DEE-licious. I've been around, okay, but really -- where have I been? Lots of Persian restaurants in the area, most of them I've been to. However, Javan has not been on my radar. I ask you, why? Why the hell not! I've lost spades of time. HAIL TO THE MEAT Anything with meat, I'm convinced, is the best you've ever had. They get their beef from Harris Ranch, and the chicken is organic. Not only barg will be noticeably better, but the koobideh is fresh ground from each. Amazing. Fresh and warm homemade fresh bread, kind of a cross between a thicker lavash and a taftoon, throw some butter on these bad boys and you have yourself a party. So good! 1. Beef barg [$24, 5.0 stars] -- all I can (almost) say is wow. The best filet I've ever had. Way better than Raffi's or anywhere. Rice was not as good as could be, but again, wow for the meat (actually, hooray). 2. Gheymeh Bademjan [$21, 4.0 stars] -- I love anything eggplant, and while it was really fresh (all stews are made daily), there was an extra spice or two that made it taste Indian. While there's nothing wrong with that, I came here for Persian! Served with basmati rice. So, I loved the meat. The owner, Alex (or Ali) was talkative, funny, smart, and very passionate about food. Noticed Fesenjan listed on the outside menu board, offered with several options- chicken, vegan, or lamb shank. Have never had this walnut and pomegranate stew with lamb, but chose to do so tonight. So glad I went outside of my usual chicken version and tried this lamb preparation! Delicious flavor! And, I enjoyed the fesenjan with albaloo polo...yum! Finally, the Persian ice cream (rose water, saffron, pistachio) offered a refreshing ending to a wonderful meal (I boxed up more than half of the generous entree to enjoy the next day at home!) Where do I start!? Persian food is my favorite food, but it's not necessarily vegan friendly... But I finally found my dream restaurant. I haven't had anything kebab like since 1996 until tonight! Their vegan version is outstanding and it's literally like my childhood all over again. Also, the tadig with stew is vegan and it is beyond impressive. Food was very good. Quality of the meat was top tier and grilled very well. I'm not a big fan of lamb but I was convinced to try it and it turned out to be my favorite dish from the restaurant. We've been to Raffis place, Fanous grill, Seaside Palace. This place was by far our favorite. The ambiance was elegant and warm. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by their very friendly staff. Our party was seated upon arrival and within just a minute or two or server introduced themselves to us. we were greeted almost instantly. They were very patient which is always important. We ordered so much food and everything came out incredible and perfect to taste. We did meet Alex, the owner. He's a very nice man. Overall, I would rate this restaurant a 8/10. From the incredibly friendly, attentive staff, to the spacious, clean, comfortable dining room.... then there's the food! For the kashke bademjoon to the beef koobideh that is ground in house and he said is only 6% fat.
