Rating: 74/100 pts My first foray into the Iranian part of LA colloquially known as "Tehrangeles" was a triumph. On browsing the available restaurants, a friend and I settled on Javan, and what followed was nothing short of a feast fit for a prince, and easily one of the best Persian cuisine experiences I've had thus far. We found parking along the metered side street (which turns free after 8pm) just around the restaurant. Walking inside, you find a clean interior that eschews traditional designs in favor of a more modern ambiance; we were warmly welcomed and immediately ushered to a table. Friendly service would continue throughout the entire meal. Our main waiter, Vahid (who made a point that we remember his name), was affable, efficient, and instrumental in helping us decide what to order. Ample amounts of both white and wheat lavash (thin, Persian-style wraps), along with garnishes (raw onion and fresh mint leaves), were complimentary. Because my knowledge of Persian eating was limited, Vahid informed me the best way to enjoy this: by breaking off a piece of lavash, lightly buttering it, adding onion and mint leaf, and then shaking on some "sumac"--a tart, maroon-colored spice. Yum! The lavash was easily breakable despite not being too dry. The mint leaves were particularly fresh, and added so much flavor that by the end I had picked the branches clean, liberally throwing them onto everything that was served. We left our order up to Vahid's judgment: as appetizers, we got an order of Tahdig and Torshi. Tahdig is rice that is fried to a crisp and "dug out" from the bottom of the cooking pot, topped with lentils and meat. This was awesome! The rice had a great, crisp texture that added variety to the meal, as pretty much everything else in Persian cuisine is soft on the teeth. The word "torshi" comes from the Persian word for "sour", and refers to pickled vegetables. Theirs is aged 4-5 years, and includes small bits of cauliflower, carrots, olive, among other chopped bits and herbs. This was another hit! Almost too tart to eat on its own, it reaches its full potential when mixed with the other items...and I couldn't stop eating it. Next came our main dish: beef and chicken kebabs. On my first bite, my mouth had to do a double take at how unbelievably soft and tender the meats were. Beef kebabs can easily get tough, but this meat was like eating butter, and seasoned to perfection. These were served with three kinds of rice: the standard Basmati, and their Baghali and Albaloo rices (2 of their 7 special rices). The Baghali was heavily mixed with dill and the occasional fava bean, producing a pleasant herby taste. In contrast to this was the Albaloo, which contained ruby-like dried cranberries that added a subtle, fruity sweetness. I felt both special rices superior to the regular, and it was especially nice to have both an herby and a sweet option, adding more complexity to the meal when mixed and matched with the other dishes. I found all the food good, perhaps the only drawback being that they are slightly on the pricey side. Entrees are around $15-20 and come with standard rice (upgrading to special rice is $3). Still, portions are fairly huge, so knowing this ahead of time will certainly help in making informed decisions. It does make a nice evening meal, and I've heard their lunch specials are a particularly good deal. Persian cuisine is founded on combining aromatic herbs and spices to produce complex, yet balanced layers of flavor. Thanks to the invaluable advice provided by the wait staff as to what dishes to order and what items to combine, I felt I was truly able to enjoy the culinary qualities that Persian cuisine is renowned for. Would definitely repeat and recommend as one of the finer spots in the area. read more

I picked up chicken Kabab and beef barg with a side of basmati rice for dinner last week and also had the pleasure of meeting the very kind and friendly owner who helped me with my order. The food was delicious, the price was very reasonable, and the portion size was perfect. Came here for dinner on a Tuesday night with a friend after moving loads of furniture from one end of west LA to the next. Needless to say, we were famished and ready to chow down. The menu was extensive, lots of options ranging from fish, poultry, lamb, and beef. This was my first visit to Javan and second time trying Persian food. To me, the food was good. I had the boneless chicken kebab with all salad. Portions were satisfying, not overwhelming, but good. The chicken was juicy and perfectly grilled. Nothing too fancy, but nicely seasoned. You get one skewer of chicken with this plate. I guess my only gripe about this place is the service. I know everyone else has been saying that the waitstaff is so nice and pleasant, but I guess my experience wasn't exactly the same. Whenever I try a new restaurant as a first timer, I love asking the waiters for suggestions. Especially since I'm not familiar with the cuisine, I want to make sure that I order the right thing etc etc. So when I asked our kind waiter for suggestions, he seemed very annoyed..and unwilling to help. Instead he just pointed at a few items on the menu and didn't really explain much. Of course I went with the chicken kebab..cant really go wrong with that. Besides the little lack in enthusiasm from our waiter, I guess my experience at Javan was alright. I would come here for their lunch specials.. it's a lot cheaper..for the same thing. For dinner however, I would suggest going to Shamshiri Grill. I think you get more bang for you buck there. read more

Honestly I'm incredibly disappointed with this place. I've never had such a mediocre experience at such a well rated restaurant. First of all, the koobideh just wasn't good at all. It had an almost synthetic consistency, was a bit dry, and had kind of a strange taste. Also I really don't expect much from Persian restaurants when it comes to stews given that nothing will compare to home-made, but the ghormeh sabzi was tasteless and just an inconvenience to chew on. I gave a second star just because the gheymeh was ok, the mast o khiar was good, and the waiter was solid. Won't be going back. read more

First of all, the service here was great. The host was friendly and our waiter was the friendliest guy. Also bonus points for a parking garage and a very nice atmosphere. The beef koobideh was really juicy and tasty. It's a pretty large portion. While waiting for our boxes for leftovers my friend kept cutting off pieces of her koobideh and saying it would be her last bite. We shared this and the filet and they were both delicious. The filet was perfectly medium rare. I have tried a bunch of the restaurants on Westwood and this place is definitely one of my favorites now. (Although they dont have the delicious freshly baked bread you can get at Shaherzhad). I guess its hard to compare since I usually order different things but I will definitely come back next time I'm in the mood for Persian food. read more

Koobideh (ground meat skewers) and Barg (beef tenderloin strips) are always my favorites, but now I have more favorites to add to my list! Appetizers Tadigh - This is a cripsy, crunchy, rice wafer topped with stew. Be careful when you cut into this cuz it's hard and you might end up flinging stew onto the table or your clothes. I would get this as an entree next time! Kashk O'Bademjon - Warm eggplant dip. I was using my pita bread to get every last bit of it off my plate. Mast O'Kheyar - Yogurt and cucumber dip. Cool and refreshing. Yum yum yum. Entrees Ghormeh Sabzi - Spinach and beef stew with rice. Huge portion. I only ate half after eating all the appetizers. Had alot of kidney beans, but I like kidney beans, so it's all good! Chengeh Kabob - Chunks of beef tenderloin! I think I like this more than Barg now. I would get everything we had that night again. With a reservation, We were able to get seated immediately for a table of 10 on a Friday night. When my guy friend accidentally spilled water in his lap, the waiter came immediately and tried to help him pat it dry. My guy friend jumped back a bit and said he can do it himself. We were in the area, waiting to talk to a leasing agent across the street and because of her tardiness, we stumbled into Javan, so it all wound up being worthwhile. On a Wednesday afternoon at first this place turned us off because it was completely vacant, but then when you walk in it's a little fancier than say your typical lunchtime Middle Eastern kabob shop where you'd order at the counter. The staff looked bored as hell waiting for the dinner crowd no doubt, but they were all very attentive, professional and nice. We order chicken and beef kabobs, a large order of hummus, which came with pita and all the little sauces, yogurt and garlic. Our entrees came with a choice of two sides, we both got rice and a salad, but all the typical Middle Eastern options were available. Javan was a very clean, white tablecloth restaurant with professional servers and a full bar. I can see it getting quite busy at night and being a nice place or take a date one night if you're in the mood for middle eastern food and don't want to take your date to a divey kabob shop. As far as parking, there is none. Maybe at night they have valet, but during lunch, like I said we were the only people there. We found street parking nearby with no effort. I honestly don't know how Javan isn't rated 5 stars. I have been to many Persian restaurants all over the country with some of the best being right here in LA. Granted, different people try different things, so I can't speak for what they order. For me? I typically have benchmark dishes for every ethnic food I eat. My go-to Persian dish ever since I was a child has been the Kabob Soltani. What I love about Javan versus other Persian restaurants is that they have a Filet Mignon Soltani dish that replaces the typical skirt steak cut with an even more tender cut of steak - skirt steak can often be very chewy and unpleasant depending on which restaurant you go to. Javan's Filet Mignon combination is absolutely out of this world! I cannot recommend it any more highly. If you love kabobs, do yourself a favor and order this! It's not cheap, but it's well worth it, if you ask me. One other note, I took a long-time friend of mine and his wife here when they visited from San Diego. His wife rarely eats steak but got the kabob at Javan. She almost ate the entire dish herself, which is impressive given the size of the meal. Every time I talk with him, he mentions how much she loved the place and that she wants to go back the next time they are in town. The staff has always been very cordial with me whether I dine in or order take-out. The decor on the inside is classy and clean. They often have live Persian music playing on the weekends. Javan was my first experience with Persian food. I feel very ambivalent about this type of cuisine. For one, all Middle Eastern food share very similar flavors and styles. Since I was told that the entree sizes are huge here, we opted to skip the appetizers. I ordered the chicken kobideh, which was skewered seasoned ground chicken. All dishes were served with Basmati and a barbecued tomato. I found the chicken to be very salty. It was so salty that I finished my entire large helping of basmati rice. We traded and shared our meats and I found the koobideh kebab and barb kebab to be much tastier. Without any sauces, I found the flavors to be very one dimensional. The albaloo polo was interesting to try, but the cherries were too sweet for my liking. Service was poor. The restaurant was pretty empty for a weekday night. The servers looked on as we sat waiting for our checks, despite having asked for it twice. The tenderloin is juicy and savory and the green beans are sauteed perfectly in an aromatic tomato sauce that may be the best I've had. Instead of being ladeled on top of the basmati rice, it was mixed together so there's plenty of herbs and spices in every bite. Delicious! The accompanying beef koobideh was good but not great, although I did prefer it over my mother's tenderloin kebab. Hers came with standard basmati rice and we both got a grilled tomato (score!) Can't believe it took me this long to get to Javan, after seeing all the good reviews and friend recommendations. The food is superb. The meat is perfectly tender and the spices are so good, I couldn't stop thinking about it the day after. The stew was also really good, the spices are superb and well balanced as well. The service is quick, and if you check in with yelp, you get a huge ass glass of wine for $1. I can't say the wine is that good but for $1 it can't be beat. read more

We were hungry and I suggested Greek, Persian or Indian food. The TV was on and a commercial for Javan came on. We turned to each other and said, why not?! :D A yay for local advertising! No reservations of course, but we were greeted and quickly seated. There were families, couples, friends - for a rainy night, quite a crowd. Must o' keyhar - delightful! Mixed with tiny chopped shallots flavoring the cool yogurt fit to top and dip with anything. And yes, I attacked the dip with bread, entrees, and nothing but itself. Kashk o' bademjan - eggplant with yogurt and mint. The yogurt and mint were trivial toppings, and the dish was not food-porn-worthy, but we finished the whole thing. Delicious. Our salmon was perfectly cooked, and the lamb rack was polished off. Both entrees were huge, although I could do with less rice! It would be great if each dish automatically came with more vegetables, but they charge extra for that. Great service, too. No idea who's responsible for all these positive reviews. I'm absolutely shocked. Visited there with a friend earlier today. This was the first time I'm visiting the "new" Javan under the new ownership (after they closed for some time). Most of the reviews are for the old Javan! Beware! There is no shortage of Persian restaurants nearby. I don't see this one surviving long. The lamb shank was underwhelming. Sauce was too think. And the lamb shank was cooked too long (was dry and a bit tough). The Dolme (grape leaves) had a funky taste. Chicken kabob was average at best. The food was the furthest thing from authentic Persian. The food at Darya down the street or any of the Persian restaurants in Westwood is MUCH better. On top of that, neither the hostess who seated us nor the waiter were Persian! Certainly, I wouldn't have even mentioned this if the food was good. All in all, I won't be coming back. This is a sad attempt to bring back the old Javan. read more

We were so thrilled to see that Javan reopened! I tell you, there is no replacement for their cherry rice - my husband and daughter love it so (well, my husband loves it and my daughter loves the cherries). There were a couple minor snafus with our delivery that I'm hoping they will be more careful with in the future - we ordered beef koobideh and chicken kebab but they gave us two orders of beef koobideh instead. Also, there was a wire bristle in my food that I almost swallowed (dangerous!). Given a similar experience at another restaurant where the manager was really good about tracking down the cause, I suspect it came from a brush that they use to clean the oven. But the beef was still delicious, and we tried their kash o' bademjan (eggplant appetizer with yogurt) for the first time, and it was quite tasty - even the kiddo pronounced that it had a nice smoky flavor and asked for more). read more

Oh yes, I am a fool for a perfectly roasted tomato! They remodeled a tad over 2yrs ago...one would be hard-pressed not to find a more pleasant and swank place to enjoy beautiful Persian fare.... I feel like this restaurant used to be better.. and by better, I mean maaybe the quality of meat and rice. Don't get me wrong, still great, and I'd definitely go back. Also an added bonus that the takeout server was super nice, helpful, sweet. But we got an order of the chicken koubideh and beef soltani. Which is our usual go to. Both dishes were great, and this time around, we also got the cucumber tzaziki. Also great. To be really honest, I'd give it 5 stars, because everything's fine, but just something a liiitlee missing for the price point.. and for the quality.. I was stuck on the westside waiting for an appointment and wanted to grab some food nearby, and found this place. It's different from the Little Osaka or gastropub fare I usually get when I'm in the area. My friend and I ordered the Kashk O'Bademjan, Lamb Shank, and Ghormeh Sabzi. The Kashk O'Bademjan is an eggplant mixture with yogurt and fried onions (or garlic? I can't quite remember) on top. It was sooo good. It's served warm, has a sweet flavor to it, and goes great with the bread they give. The Ghormeh Sabzi is a stew mainly made of spinach with cubes of beef in it. It was ok. It was really watery though. I wish it was richer, in terms of consistency and flavor. The beef itself was a little bland and dry as well. The lamb shank was served with one of their specialty rices, that has dill and fava beans in it. It was alright. The beans were kinda bland... But the lamb shank was pretty tender and came in a tomato based sauce. Again though, I wish it was richer. WHY SO WATERY. I feel like because it was like that, the food came out blander than necessary. The service was friendly enough. There was an incident where we asked for more bread, but because we didn't realize they had to toast the bread, it takes awhile, so we asked multiple times and got multiple baskets with different waiters... So embarrassing, lol. Overall though, the food was average and the meal was not memorable. Wouldn't go back. Except maybe the eggplant app. I'd get that takeout. Hence the extra star. read more

First off, $1 wine with a yelp check-in... any red wine! I had the Zin and it was fabulous! Our wonderful server, Majid, guided us through our dinner. We were going to order the combo appetizer, but they brought us out both a stew and a salad complimentary (SO NICE!), so we added just the borani spinach and dolma. Everything was incredibly delicious. Our entrees: grilled chicken & ground beef skewers, both wonderful and moist and so much rice!! He has the rice with lentils and dates and I chose the one with cherries. This was an outstanding meal, with even better service: interesting and unique (to me!) and fun to explore my own neighborhood. read more

This restaurant is exceptional. I went with my boyfriend and another couple and we all loved everything. Appetizer: We ordered the tardig with 2 stews. Fesenjon and Gameh. Both were very good. I don't like fesenjon and I liked theirs. We also had salad shirazi and musto- khiar. Also, very good. I like that they have you an extra lime for the salad shirazi. Dinner: We had the boneless chicken and soltani. The quality of the chicken and meat were great. Also, everything was cooked to perfection. The food melts in your mouth. The rice was perfect too. Dessert: We had tea and Persian pastries. Can't go wrong with these options. Ambiance: They had a guy playing music and it was just enough to liven the mood but not too much that it got in the way of our conversation. We stayed about an hour after we finished eating and just relaxed and enjoyed our tea. We weren't rushed at all. Service: The service was superb. From the minute we walked in until we left, everyone was great. However, Majid, our server treated us like royalty. He was there at the perfect time. We never had to wait for anything. My friends and I decided to come here last minute, and I'm so glad we did. We ended up having an amazing dinner with live music, completely by accident. Our waiter, Vahid, went way beyond out of his way to serve us. I ordered the chicken barg along with the Chianti, and my friends got the koobideh with merlot and the chengeh kabobs. Mine was amazing; we all almost finished the plates despite how big they were. Even though it was $19 and $1 for the glass of wine, it was absolutely worth the price for the experience and everything else we got to try! At the start of the meal, Vahid gave us an appetizer on the house to try, and at the end, Persian tea and sparkling water. He was so sweet and so friendly, it definitely made me want to come back! He works on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. If you come, you should definitely look for Vahid, he's great! I can't wait to come back! read more
