My boyfriend is a huge fan of Donald Glover so of course, visiting this location is a must for us. We had put visiting this shop off because we know that Silverlake parking is horrible. I have to say initially the jelly taste was similar to beets which threw me off but then I tasted the hint of jelly - I think it was grape but I would prefer strawberry. The boba itself was firm then chewy and arrived warm - respectable. I normally get a milk tea but felt adventurous. Interesting concept and definitely hyped by Donald Glover/Childish Gambino's name in it. Also before reading the following, understand that I went during soft opening so I recognize some of these things are small kinks that may get resolved. However, overall this left a lot to be desired, especially if you drink bubble tea on the regular. My one major complaint: 2/3 of our drinks, the top was not sealed and they spilled when we tried to pop the straws in --Peanut butter and jelly man - true ti it's name, sweet and nutty, a good solid choice from their signatures --Hangover Cure - tastes like those savory smoked cocktails sans the alcohol so definitely an acquired taste. I didn't love it but I guess I hope it cures your hangover --Strawberry barley milk - essentially your standard strawberry milk you get at bubble tea shops and a solid choice. Like a lot of others, I wanted to try this spot only because I'm a big Donald Glover fan but I didn't really have high hopes for a celebrity boba shop honestly. Now onto the cons... - There was a line to the door and it honestly moved pretty slowly - there's only one cashier. - The menu on the wall inside gives 0 description of the drinks/toppings (some of which are unique to this boba shop like "blue spots" or the "hangover cure"). The line probably moves slowly because the poor cashier has to explain what every menu item is to everyone who asks. - The cups are so small compared to most boba shops and the prices are about $8 per drink. - They advertise being able to adjust sweetness but on all the drinks we wanted to order we couldn't actually adjust sweetness at all and of course the menu doesn't indicate which drinks you can adjust. - And it maybe would all be worth it if the drinks were good. I came on a Sunday 11/12/23 around 5:30pm and there was a long line. I decided to stick with it since we had already made the trip. And because I really liked Donald Glover in Community! First impressions: - Interior is a very terrestrial and giving an edgy look, I guess. A huge jelly man in the front, circular tiles, and a moody red light for ambiance. That said, it was WARM inside. Maybe because so many people but the window was completely open too. Poor ventilation inside. - Like many places in Silver Lake, it's just street parking. So good luck if you have a car. - Staff seem friendly but flustered and it seems like they need more workers! - Operations were sloooooow. There was SUCH a long wait to first order and then to get your boba. Probably like 20+ minutes waiting in line and another 15 minutes to get our drink. - Menu was so lacking. It's just a piece of paper located at the cashier's and doesn't describe the tastes or profiles at all. What's in matcha bouquet?? (It's rose, hibiscus, and matcha BTW. I asked.) Check out the menu photos on Yelp to save your time. PLUS!! The menu doesn't even state the price (around $7ish)?!?!?! Does Donald Glover think he can just make us blindly pay for things? Jellyman is a place where I believe you pay for the experience vs the flavor of the drinks. It felt like stepping into a serene space, from the light wood to the music. The line was long, but it's because the menu had no descriptors and each customer had to ask the cashier to describe certain items. That being said, the cashiers were incredibly patient and were able to help us determine the drinks we wanted. Strawberry Barley Milk Tea - This drink was okay. Not too sweet, which is fantastic for a drink where the sugar isn't controlled. However, there wasn't anything that stood out about the flavors itself. Nor was it the best barley milk tea I had. I love the interior and design of this shop. I don't really love the boba selections. I'm a big fruit tea girl and really love real tea flavors. I'd go back for that even though this place is pricey. I could leave the other drinks. With bias: I've supported his projects for years so a boba shop took no convincing. The interior was bare but aesthetically pleasing.  Cool handwritten-looking paper menus that had the date (Nov 8th) so it makes me wonder if the menu changes every day. PB&J- 9/10 such a unique drink! Literally tastes like you're drinking a PB&J, the peanut milk tastes very similar to meet fresh's peanut dessert soup, and the grape jelly cubes are really soft and squishy, not so much like lychee jelly, but gelatinous. May not be for everyone tho Matcha yuzu tonic- 9/10 so fresh and citrusy!! Visited Donald Glover's boba shop this weekend and was a little disappointed. The space itself is very small, but I think they design it well to give it a fun, quirky vibe. There's a giant statue of the jellyman inside which is really cute but he takes up about half the space! The menu is placed on a mirrored wall off to the side of the cashier line which makes it a little difficult to look at before you get to the register. I ordered the Strawberry barley milk tea with boba which cost about $9!! I think that is an insane price for a tea. I really didn't enjoy the flavor of the tea and they accidentally put coffee or something in it which just made the flavor even worse. I did however enjoy their boba - they were firm and had a nice chewy texture. I would probably try this place again just to see if there's another flavor that is more up my alley, but the price isn't worth it enough for this to be a go-to place for me. read more

My friend and I tried this place impulsively because of Childish Gambino and we were pleasantly surprised. The shop was small but aesthetically pleasing. The overall theme of the jellyman was appreciated in the drinks and decorations outside. Along with the vibes, the staff were extremely welcoming and patient. I have so much to say, but to keep it concise and to put the bottom line up front, Jellyman has really good beverages. Upon arrival, you are greeted by mid-century-modern-nautical decor, with an overhanging canoe, and a fisherman peeking over the side to say hi. Passing the seating area and through the doors, a Jellyman Monster (?) materializes as you check out the menu and place your order. I have no idea what any of this means, but the subtext suggests there is a story that is a mix between The Old Man and the Sea and BioShock in the Funko Pop universe. There is so much intrigue and mystery before even deciding what drink to order. My friend and I ordered the Peanut Butter and Jelly. Man (PBJ) and the Yuan Yang. The PBJ was a shock to my taste buds, with the overwhelming tartness and sweetness of (I think) grape jelly upfront, then the creaminess of the peanut butter to mellow you out, and finally an after taste of toasted bread to round out the pallet. The Yuan Yang was a more gentle ride, greeting you with a balanced blend of earthy black tea and brighter coffee for a refreshing pick-me-up after a big lunch. When I go to boba shops, I usually request 50% sweetness. For both drinks, I ordered 100% sweet and although they were very sweet, I didn't think it was too much. The boba was just the right texture-chewy but not mushy and firm but not brittle. It's important to note that this isn't a boba shop where you'd find your favorite flavors of milk tea. If I was craving boba, Jellyman probably won't make the top of the list to satisfy that craving. However, if you're in the mood to try something new Jellyman will be a delightful treat. Its enthralling decor and inspired drinks meet at the intersection of art and cuisine. It's places like this that make me love and appreciate LA. As stated by most of the reviews here, Jellyman is Donald Glover's new business venture in Silverlake. When you walk in, you may notice a fairly long line, but note that the drinks come out fast. You won't be waiting too long. The ambiance definitely was envisioned by Glover with its lo-fi music and minimalistic art. As for the boba, I ordered the PB&J as it felt the most in-tuned with the overall unique theme of the shop. The flavors were very unique and I definitely enjoyed the texture of the grape jelly. Overall, it's a fun experience to stop by in Silverlake. I believe the hate is a bit unwarranted, I would temper your expectations - it's just supposed to be a fun/cool boba shop, nothing super exceptional.
