I was visiting and was on the hunt for a good matcha latte since it's hard to come by back home. I came across Kettl and made a pit stop and I'm sure glad that I did. The inside of Kettl cozy and there is a small seating area downstairs in a larger one upstairs. I wanted to get everything from the menu but decided to get the nishio (suiteki) matcha latte while hubby got the sobacha (roasted buckwheat) latte. My mom got the tall matcha. Our drinks were carefully prepared, but I wish that they came in larger sizes. We both really enjoyed our drinks but my mom took a few sips and handed me the rest of her tall matcha which was still good but I think the matcha flavor could have been stronger. However, my mom did ask for something with a milder taste so not sure if it was diluted for that reason? I also got a matcha cookie which was on the pricey end but oh so delicious. read more

Their matcha is imported from various regions of Japan and I had the chance to visit and try their matcha latte. I tried the Uji matcha latte with oat milk and it was delicious. I previously went to Japan last year and the matcha latte's I make from that matcha tastes the same as the one here. It was totally delicious and I love how they have sweetener that you can add yourself to suit your sweetness. We love the do it yourself culture. They do have milk alternatives such as oat and pistachio milk. Overall, I would recommend Kettl for your matcha needs. This place in particular peaked my interested solely based on its offerings and traditional approach. I haven't really seen other matcha speciality shops that tailor the consumer experience to be quite like this. It felt much more serious and quality forward in compared to all of the newer/trendy shops in LA. Noticing right away that they don't sweeten their drinks, but rather have simple syrup and honey to add at your own leisure. This was a green flag for me - as I tend to order my matcha unsweetened to begin with. Another thing to mention is that they do offer dairy free options such as oat milk and pistachio. Their matcha offerings range in flavor profile, tonics, or cortado/latte. Really tailored to your preference! It was a treat to look at their entire wall filled of various matcha powders differing in origin. The shop interior is very earthy and collected. Although it was about a 15 min wait to get my drink, I was pleased with the outcome. I found street parking around the corner down towards the neighboring shops. If there's one matcha place that has been hyped up in LA, it's Kettl, so I knew I had to go try it. When I first got there, I was pleasantly surprised that the line wasn't too long. The space itself is very nice and has a Japanese minimalist look to it. They've got a wall of matcha products you can buy and they go into depth about what each matcha tastes like which was very cool. However, both of my drinks were pretty bad. My brother tried the iced Gyokuro tea and it was watery/had the faintest tea taste. I got the Suiteki Cortado, which was described as creamy and floral, with soy milk. The first sip I took, I was shocked by how overwhelmingly bitter it was so I swirled my drink around and took another sip. It tasted funky and I had trouble pinpointing why it tasted so bad. But then it hit me: it tasted like sour milk. But I highly doubt the milk went bad because a) it tasted like sour cow milk and I got soy milk, b) when soy milk has gone bad in my fridge it develops clumps and this didn't have any, and c) neither my brother nor I got sick from drinking it. I am so surprised at all the negative and mid reviews! I've been here countless times since Kettl has opened and have had an amazing experience each and every time. The prices are fair and you get the option of either a cortado or latte (I prefer the cortado as the lesser milk allows the matcha to shine a bit more - that is, if you want a 'milk' based drink! Sure you get 'less' but I'm here for quality and not just a milk forward drink.) I'm a fan and I get it, matcha is not for everyone - especially if you do not have the palette for it. If you do not have an acquired taste or don't have any interest in the intricacies of it then don't bash something you are already not a fan of lol. But for those who do have a strong opinion about this place and consider themselves a matcha connoisseur, then to each their own. We are entitled to our opinion and experiences. I've tried all three of the options that are offered at Kettl, my ranking: 1. Suiteki (I'm a floral gyal, so this was my favorite!) 2. The place totally gave that zen vibe, but unfortunately when I visited last weekend they didn't open the mezzanine, making the space being very limited. Asking the barista, the first two variants on the matcha list were their most popular. I went for the one that's more nutty with cacao hint, which was more of my preference. They gave the option of going for either cortado if you fancied bolder matcha flavor in your drink, or the latte. I didn't get the negative reviews I read, as their matcha was actually great. Could definitely taste the bold umami flavor, and I even went for the latte, not cortado. They served pistachio and soy as dairy free alternatives, and great news, not charging extra for it. My friend and I made plans for a matcha tasting - made a reservation in advance. We figured it would be fun to try and something different to do! The cafe is pretty small, there's a bar right when you walk in with 4 seats at the tasting area, and they have an upper level and some seating further back if you walk past the bar. The wall is lined with pretty ceramics and matcha-related items like matcha whisks. We were given the tasting menu and I was pretty shocked by some of the prices I saw on there. A $70 matcha omakase for example. Sheesh! There are other tastings that are cheaper than that, but the cheapest one is $22 I believe (for two matcha tastings). You can also order off the standard menu which we decided to do. The one we got was $15 and it was described as having a nutty profile and a dark chocolate finish. The barista made the matcha and it's like a sort of craft watching him do it, they definitely take their matcha very seriously here. It came served in a bowl and there wasn't much... it's not a latte-sized portion, but probably the equivalent of a shot of matcha. It did come with three little squares of chocolate which was a nice touch! I honestly thought the matcha just tasted bitter, I didn't really get the nutty profile or the dark chocolate taste so clearly I don't have an experienced palate. A new and highly anticipated matcha place added to the already growing list of cafes in LA! I heard so many reviews when Kettl was still in NY only so when I heard they were opening up a location in LA, I was thrilled. However, as with any new cafes, there is bound to be a long line . I waited around 10-15min in line which wasn't too bad. Such a clean aesthetic but rather small. It felt really crammed inside as people were waiting to order and to grab their drinks. There is a small room towards the back where you can sit on the bench but wouldn't recommend bringing in your work. Upstairs seating was blocked off. Parking is street parking only. I ordered the Suiteki iced matcha latte ($7.75) which is supposed to have floral notes but unfortunately the drink fell short. It mostly tasted like milk and the matcha was not well incorporated. It was clumpy. Also, drinks DO NOT come sweetened but there is sweetener for you to add yourself on the counter. I hope as time passes, they figure out how to balance between providing good quality drinks with high customer volumes especially coming from such a reputable brand. read more

The Suiteki was creamy and floral, while the Shirakawa, which is the highest grade, had a rich umami flavor. We tried these two matchas as cortados and they were impressive. Drinking it as a cortado allowed us to fully enjoy the earthy and slightly bitter flavors of matcha without it being too sweet and commercialized. If you prefer bold, umami-rich matcha over sweet, trendy versions (insert matcha einspanners) this place is worth checking out. Since we usually make our own high-grade ceremonial matcha at home, we're pretty picky about our matcha. Many matcha places in Koreatown and Los Angeles focus on sweet, creamy, commercialized matcha drinks, which are palatable and accessible to the general crowd but don't highlight the true taste of matcha and the experience that comes with it. Kettl, however, does a great job of keeping the matcha pure, without added sweeteners or unnecessary ingredients. Overall, we would definitely go back. Pretty disappointed. Came here to buy a matcha whisk for my friend and after a long journey, thought I should order a matcha latte to try for myself. The gentleman at the front was super nice and friendly and was really patient with me. I got the Hukuju latte 6.75$. Unfortunately when I grabbed my drink, there was a gash in the cup causing spillage over the counter. I apologized profusely thinking maybe I grabbed the drink too hastily, grabbing napkins to wipe down the counter and floor. Then I realized the cup's actually broken! Lost 1/3 of my drink. I alert the workers and turns out the entire stack of plastic cups had holes in them. They had to go to the back to retrieve fresh unopened cups. The workers who made my drink didn't even apologize, or offer to remake it for me, and just poured my 1/3 gone matcha latte in a new cup. I understand there was a long line but I lost a lot of my expensive drink due to their error, so definitely a shitty experience here. Some pros though, they offer oat milk and pistachio milk at no extra cost and they have a bathroom. read more

Came here on a saturday afternoon. Inside was nicely decorated. There was a small line, but waited maybe just 15 minutes or so. We ordered two matcha lattes - one with Oat milk and the other with Whole milk. My whole milk latte came out extremely clumpy.
