I had a chopped salad that hardly had any toppings, mostly lettuce for $18. It was a total rip off. The investors who thought this was the way to go is ridiculous. We went there a couple months ago and thought maybe it was an off night, but we decided to give it another shot, because we used to love Kona. Well....same experience. We ordered kids meals (which are a great deal), other food and sushi. Everyone's food and everything came out- EXCEPT the sushi both times we have been there recently! Everyone finished eating and we still hadn't received our sushi! We finally got them- and they weren't even the right rolls! How a place charges over $20 for a roll and you get them after everyone is done eating and they are wrong... again we thought maybe it was a one time thing but clearly this is how things are at Kona in Gilbert! Stopped in for Cinco De Mayo and everything was delicious. The only complaints I would've given if I complained in the restaurant was, the butter cake was extremely over baked and crumbly, dry. I sent it back but didn't ask for a refund. Also, the fish tacos had one tiny, tiny piece of fish on them and I tasted more of the cabbage and sauce. The music was great until the DJ came and then it turned awful. She only catered to a certain crowd, which was disappointing. She lacked a tremendous amount of diverse music. The music played by the house was super diverse. Other than that, typical happy hour food. Nothing to truly brag about. I did want to brag about the butter cake but it fell all the way short. Kona Grill was a hot spot back in the day. I haven't been in a while , but I remember the menu HH menu being great. Fast forward 5 years and the deals aren't as smokin as they once were, but we decided to give it a try for dinner. We both ordered the surf and turf. The filet was 6oz, a decent size, but didn't have the buttery, juicy taste that I enjoy when having beef. I chose the lobster roll as my fish. The lobster inside the roll was anemic and was too small to give a real lobster flavor. Dinner was unremarkable but the service was great. He gave us honest and good advice on what we should order based on our questions, and was super accommodating about anything we needed changed or added to. He was a vibe to talk to too, so that's a plus! Food was good, loved the shrimp and lobster roll and waygu fried rice. Angry edamame was good too but too spicy for me unfortunately. I was partially pleased with our service. To start our server Sol was very polite and attentive to our needs. The ambiance is very chill and the decor was nice too. The food was amazing my Poke bowl was very good and a great proportion. It was pricey 26 bucks but again it was really good. Two of my kids finished their meals before I could get photos, that's says a lot because they usually never finish their meals. I've been here so many times for lunch, dinner and happy hour and the quality and portion sizes have really declined. They used to have a really good power lunch during the workweek for $19. Absolutely loved the lemongrass clam chowder soup but when I recently went, the soup size was tiny and the soup was very watery. The sushi rolls had so much rice with tiny pieces of fish. Waited half hour for order of chicken satay which consisted of four skewers of thin, dry chicken on a large bed of cabbage slaw and a tiny portion of peanut sauce, for $21. Prosecco overpriced at $14 per glass. Recently had a chicken sandwich there, long wait, sandwich dry and not much taste, had to put mustard on it to give it some flavor. This was the most disgusting tasting food I have ever had. I got fried pickles off the happy hour. Little did I know I was about to wait 25 min to get 9 pickles for 9 dollars. Next up out disappointing drinks. My daughter got the nastiest tasting Shirley temple. It had extremely little grenadine and the sprite tasted like old man breath or urinal cakes I had the iced tea which tasted like it was made last year from dish water. Still gives me chills just thinking about it about it. After another 30 minutes passed finally our entre was served. We both had the lemon tomato and arugula pasta. The noodles were so over cooked it was like eating paste and the flavor wasn't that far off from paste either. The cream sauce was bland and tasteless. There was also this stale flavor that we couldn't tell if it was the noodles or sauce but it was ick. So to add insult to our injury we had the pleasure of paying $90 for this pleasure. I was going to speak with the waiter or manager but couldn't find either after our meal was delivered we were abandoned. So I would say the place is definitely a higher end version of a typical Hawaiian restaurant. It's that Hawaiian fusion style, which does include sushi and now they have a brunch which includes things like breakfast burritos, and pancakes to cater for weekends. I would say the quality of the meats are very high end. The staff and service match the quality of the food, my favorite thing might actually be that butter cake .. that thing is amazing. Went here for the first time last night (Saturday night reservation) and it was an overall good experience! We were seated right away in a booth when we asked for one, and service was always quick and friendly. We had 4 people total and everyone liked their meal (shrimp tacos were a bit basic and flatbread was too spicy for half of us) but overall everything tasted great. The lemon penne pasta was SO good and we tried a dessert too. It was a little loud in the restaurant and a bit overpriced so that's why I took away one star. Overall a nice dinner spot especially if you like seafood/sushi (we aren't big sushi fans so that may be part of it too). Worth it to try and see if you like! read more
