I asked for more side dishes-napa kimchi and radish kimchi and the waitress with short spiked hair comes over and says "only one". To which I replied "what?" And she goes on to say with a heavier tone this time "only one." What do you mean only one? Did you guys change your policy to where customers can only get one refill on side dishes? Kunjip has been a long time favorite. My two repeats are always #1 Sullungtang and sometimes #2 Galbi Tang If you get sick, order #1. If you have a hangover, order #1. If you are hungry, order #1. Okay, just order #1 because the milky slowly simmered broth will make you feel better. I've tried a couple other dishes but since I only have one stomach and don't get to frequent Kunjip, #1 is my order. If you are familiar with sullungtang then you will know why Kunjip is a winning choice in the bay area. If you have never had it before, here are some things to consider: 1. The broth comes out without salt seasoning. You may add to your heart's desire 2. The spicy radish, kimchi and green onions are to enhance this umami in the soup 3. Appreciate the milky and silky texture of the broth in its simplicity How to eat #1: You eat sullangtang with a bowl of rice by transporting spoonfuls of it into the soup or unloading the whole bowl to submerge if you wish. Salt to season, green onions to garnish and pickled spicy radish and kimchi are your sides to enjoy along your meal. Service is cordial and at times can be neglecting but when I go there I just want my bowl of soup and keep to myself, therefore it does not affect me much. I've found my soup craving place! Have you ever craved amazing bowl of soup when you feel under the weather or just need something warm and cozy? This is thee place to get it. I always turn to pho or Vietnamese noodles, but walk out disappointed because the MSG level exceeds the warm soupy comfort (BTW I have nothing against MSG, in case you were wondering. It's delicious and amazing in small portions...lol) and goes straight to discomfort and dehydration...lol BUT not here. You'll get a warm full bodied broth that tastes like it was made with heart warming soul. Flavors are bold, present, real and full. I cant get enough and I've been thinking about it since. I must have been Korean in my past life. When I'm not watching kdramas, listening to kpop, or learning to speak Korean, I'm eating Korean food. I've been to Kunjip 3 times in the past 2 weeks. X_X Thought it was time for a review. If you're used to the typical Korean restaurants (KBBQ, soon tofu, bim bim bap, etc), you're probably not going to enjoy Kunjip too much. Kunjip specializes in stews and noodle dishes...it's the Korean version of comfort food. My favorites (in this order): 1. Galbi Tang: Glass noodles in the most AMAZING beef broth! It includes several pieces of extremely tender short ribs. My hangover cure. 2. Sul Rang Tang: Vermicelli noodles in ox bone broth with a few slices of beef. The broth is very bland bc you're supposed to season it yourself with the salt and scallions on the table. 3. Mul naengmyun: cold noodles in a slushy, icy broth. It includes slices of beef, hard boiled egg, and a slice of fruit. Sooo refreshing on a hot day! There are only 3 sides (pickled cucumbers, radish, and cabbage) but they are deeee-lish! Too bad they're not open late or else I'd be hitting this place up instead of pho or La Vic's after a night of drinking. read more

I suppose this isn't for everyone -- granted I didn't get what the majority of yelpers here get (that Oxtail soup I believe), but in my defense, it was hot as hell this certain day and I wanted something that wasn't a soup. I ordered the cold noodles with beef shank and I was actually pretty disappointed. The noodles in my opinion just weren't my forte. The entire dish felt uncoordinated and off rhythm, the sauce that came with the dish was meant to be mixed in, but it was damn hard to do that at all. I enjoyed having the watermelon inside the noodles, but the fact is that the meal just didn't POP to me, didn't resonate well with my taste buds. This sounds strange, but I personally think that dish would have tasted a lot better, if it weren't so damn cold. The sides dishes that come along with the meal left me unsatisfied. I wasn't particularly impressed with their kimchi (again! folks, this is just my taste buds, don't bash me on this). I like kimchi that has a bit of an vinegar-ish taste to it; with a kick of spiciness (some places have that specific taste and I love it, this place unfortunately doesn't). The soup side dish was really underwhelming. I didn't like it at... I'm sorry. To close my review, let my say that I am in no way bashing this restaurant. I'm just letting people know that the menu is very selective, and it caters to certain taste buds in my opinion. You won't find the usual bibimbap or soft-tofu here, that's not what they specialize in. Don't come in here expecting this to be like every other Korean restaurant that serves the more *popular* dishes (or so some say). You will, however, be greeted by friendly staff that are very accommodating to you, and guests who are absolutely NUTS about the food here. Unfortunately, I didn't fit the mold, I came in here expecting something and got something entirely else. Was brought here by my friend Sam C. after he was helping me with some house repair/car repair stuff the other week. He strongly recommended that I to get this one soup, but as usual I refused to listen because I really wanted the oxtail, I just adore oxtail. Then when our soups came, I asked to taste the broth in his soup and ugh. For once I'm dissatisfied with my order. He does the normal I told you so, "I'm older and wiser mumblings that old friends yada yada" and I humbly agree that I have ordered incorrectly. I think the one he had, and told me to order was the #2. Mine was the milky looking soup. 3 mini tablespoons of salt and my soup finally isn't bland tasting anymore and the salt has brought out this really savory essence. Not bad, but next time I come back here, I'm getting the good stuff. I went to Korean food heaven! Kunjip is all about korean homestyle cooking. My fav - OXTAIL SOUP (Sul Lung Tang) - milky soup comes from hours of simmering the bones. Note: all the soup at kunjip comes unseasoned, each table will be given salt and pepper and green onions for you to season the soup to your liking. SHORT RIB STEW (Maeun Kalbi Jim) - The short ribs are exceptionally tender and flavorful. The stew has carrots, broccoli, potato and a hard boiled egg toped with sesame seeds. The stew was so flavorful! I literally use my chopstick to peel off the meat from the bone, dip it in the stew, scoop some soup with my spoon and eat it in a spoonful. That way you get the tenderness of the meat and the flavor of the soup altogether. It's a big portion, enough for 4 of us to share. We also ordered the beef cold noodle. wheat noodle, tender cooked beef slices, cucumber, watermelon and hard boiled egg. Slurp away the goodness. oh and their cold noodle is UNLIMITED! Never endless korean cold noodle, Olive garden, you better watch your back! We order those three things for the four of us to share, it was plenty! *burp* excuse me! =P Their kimchi here is the best kimchi I've ever tasted other than the times I had in Korea (the real deal). The kimchi has the right amount of sourness, spices and heat. It also has a very distinct flavor to it - I thought it was shrimp paste at first, but I found small pieces of fresh oysters in it, it explains the unique flavor. It is absolutely delicious! Kunjip only gives you 3 banchans (side dishes): pickled cucumber, daikon and kimchi. I think every restaurant should be like Kunjip, don't make your menu too long, too fancy, focus on the signature dishes and make them absolutely exceptional! kunjip had a large grand opening sign in front with pics of 4 entrees featured on the front window. a waitress motioned me to a table in the half filled room. i never got a menu (there wasn't one). a placemat in korean explained what kunjip was about. i'm guessing, i can't read korean. on the wall was a luminated panel showing and describing 4 items.. when the waitress approached me to order, i motioned 4 fingers to her. (no. 4) sampling: -hwe naeng myun(buckwheat noodles with raw fish, radish, egg, & cucumbers mixed in spicy sauce 10.95) the buckwheat noodle was chewy. as i have little experience with buckwheat noodles, i'll take jen w's authentication that it's genuine and hand made. the rest of the dish was fresh and tasted great! the fish looked and tasted like thin beef. the cartilage was fish like. -3 banchan(radish kimchee, leaf kimchee, jalepeno?) in large trays. a scissor was provided to cut the banchan. very fresh and tasty -cup of sul lang tang, (beef broth) awesome tasty soup. amongst the best i've tasted!. dessert: -yakult (small little bottle) tasty yogurt like drink. banchan: -only 4 items on menu, sul lun tang (8.95) and 3 kinds of buckwheat noodles (8.95-10.95) -all korean patrons -didn't hear any english except " you, chinese?" -lots of parking.in lot. -very friendly service, water refilled, no tea -definitely repeatable for the sul lang tang and the individual cooked pots of rice dispensed. -definitely authentic korean food. read more

I had planned to go to Tobang in the same plaza, but was distracted in the parking lot and inadvertently walked into Kunjip instead. Imagine my confusion when I flipped through the very short menu and couldn't find any soondubu or bulgogi. What a dumbass. Anyway, I decided that I might as well stay and try the famous oxtail soup that everyone raves about, which was a major disappointment. The broth was flavorless and the meat was incredibly bland. I copied my neighbors and added tons of chopped green onions but it did nothing to perk up the flavor. The Galbi Jim was really good though. I enjoyed the tender stewed beef in a fragrant umami broth, although I'm not sure if this dish alone would warrant an intentional repeat visit to the restaurant. God, I really hope that I'll have the competency to make it to Tobang next time. read more

My sister found this place last week and decided to take our family here today. Let me start off by saying that the food was pretty good. We ordered the galbi jim and the oxtail soup. The galbi jim was flavorful but not overly so and the meat was soft. The oxtail soup was great and the kimchi was one of the best I've had. The reason I am giving the one star rating was because of their service. Our family has 4 people and my mom and sister don't eat as much so we ordered 3 portions of food to share between the 4 of us. When we asked for refills of banchan, they refused because we only ordered 3 portions of food. I have never heard of such a thing before nor did I see any mention of this in their menu. Being stingy with the banchan at a korean restaurant is a huge no in my book. Later on, one of the waitresses came over (without us asking) to give us more banchan, but the other waitress that originally refused us immediately rushed over and told her not to do it. Furthermore, the service here was really just nonexistent -- no refills of water, no smiles or anything. When we paid, we gave 9.5% tip and wrote on the receipt why we were giving so little tip (bad service, stingy on the banchan). We left and got into the car and one of the waitresses ran out after us and demanded we give at least 10% tip. When did tip start becoming mandatory? Unbelievable. I love, love, love this place! It's my go to when I want to eat lots of meat. This however isn't your typical Korean restaurant. There's no bibimbap or seafood pancake. In fact they specialize in beef stews, souped, and cold noodles. That's yet. For newbies be warned that there are a couple of misses on their menu that I would not recommend the first time you come. I.e. Beef soups with noodles and all that jazz. The dishes lack flavor and are meant to be salted yourselves. Remember, these dishes definitely aren't the highlight of this magnificent restaurant. Don't be fooled. The feature dish here that keeps me coming back again and again is their stone pot beef short ribs with potato and broccoli. It's absolutely to die for! The beef is tender, rich, and flavorful. The dressing and the sizzling of the meat on the hot stone pot is out of this world. It's some how even more fulfilling than Korean BBQ. It's the ultimate Korean comfort food. Come here with 2 or more people because each of those dishes are huge and is around $45. Order a cold noodle on the side if you want to give that a try, but remember stone pot beef shoe ribs is the highlight of this restaurant. Definitely a Korean locals kind of place. The co-workers and I were the only non Koreans there by a longshot. Now I've had my fair share of Korean food but I've never actually had Sullungtang before. Reminds me a lot of what pho is like. Deep flavored, long cooked beef broth, noodles, and brisket. You salt, spice, and onion it to taste with a handful of sides, chili peppers with chili paste, daikon and kim chi. Pretty solid meal and I love the flavorful broth once seasoned to taste. I've been here several times because my gf was really fond of the place. The cold noodles with extras were ten bucks and the cold noodles by themselves were somewhere between 5 and 8. Lots of free appetizers though. It was ok to me. She really liked the Ox tail soup which was like 20 bucks but whatever... it wasn't for me. She likes soup, I don't, except Phó. Each time we'd go, we'd never feel welcome though. The service was really terse. They'd stay away until there was something to bring and then not come back. Other customers would stare too. Uncomfortable atmosphere. We ignored that figuring it was just something we didn't understand. We always tipped well, something I wonder if others do. I know my gf's co-workers don't when she goes out with them, and they get great service. We were forced to stopped coming when things got really bad though. We're there, and we always get this water that's slightly pink and tastes like kimchee. The first time I had it I thought it was dirty water, like they slipped some sink water into it. It was always the same so I figured it was supposed to be like that. I'm feeling curious so I ask the waitress what it's called. She says tea. So I'm like what type of tea. She just says tea. I ask again, like how is it made, and she says its only called tea. Won't tell me how its made. This is in addition to being slightly worse service than it'd ever been before. She looked disgruntled ever time she was forced to come to our table, and came only if necessary. No courtesies, nothing. Rude. So I pay with card like I always do, and today, since I don't deserve answers or courtesy, I leave no tip. That would have been the end of it. I would have come back. This woman follows me to my car waving the receipt. "You forgot to leave a tip". "I know". "Why you no leave tip?". "Remembered when I asked you what type of tea it was. You refused to answer me." Then she says "It's called WXYZ tea" as if she knew the whole time but I wasn't supposed to know or something. I can't remember what she said the name of it was. I'm like "Yeah, that's what I wanted to know. You refused to tell me." She throws her hands up in the air and storms away, no good-bye, no sorry, no "Ohh", nothing, except for some mumbling. I was so nervous I was reaching for my wallet the whole time like when a beggar asks you for money. Was feeling really pressured to give her something. Maybe she was having a bad day but the service was bad and the tip was bad accordingly. I've been too afraid to return. Not when I'd have to trust them to prepare my food... Restaurant specializes in the items listed on their menu. A little pricey but it was super delicious so only only got 2 items To-Go: Galbi Tang and Galbi Jim. I used the leftover sauce from Galbi Jim and cooked veggies with it so nothing was wasted. Of the banchan given, my favorite is the daikon one, very crunchy and flavorful. Will come back and order takeout from them again. Wait time from order to pickup was 20 mins at the counter. Everything was neatly packed to prevent leaking while in transport. The menu is slowly expanding. I've had the sullung tang, mool nengmyun, bibim nengmyun and they've added dogani tang. So far, the quality has been top notch, proof of which, this joint has customers who keep coming back for more. The dogani tang, unlike other joint, where you get this big ol' knuckle, this place has gotten the good all cut up in nice large and plentiful pieces. The dipping sauce though is just a little too sweet for my taste. I'm used to the soy sauce, jalapeno with a touch of hot mustard. Salty, with a touch of sweet and some heat. The chadolbaegi was tender and tasty. I'm usually not the hugest fan, since it's a lean and tends to be tougher and not as flavorful. The nengmyun was good, not great for me. Solid amounts of meat and love that they have sliced asian pear. Makes a difference. The noodles are super thin, homemade (apparently) and good, but need just a little more chew for my taste. GALBI JJIM!!! I can't believe it has taken me so long to discover this amazing place, given that I go a few doors down to Tobang so often. I have been on a search for a place that not only sells galbi jjim, but a place that does it well. And oh my goodness, I HAVE FINALLY FOUND IT. Their banchans are kept extremely simple, just three types of kimchi (cucumber, cabbage, and radish). There's hot mustard, chili paste, salt, and pepper on the table for their soups and naengmyuns. Don't let the $40 scare you from trying the galbi jjim, it's definitely a family style dish, as in there's a LOT, and it can feed up to 2-3 people. It's so tender, fall off the bone, and delicious. Cut them off the bone, into bite size pieces to get perfect bites with a little bit of galbi jjim, kimchi, and rice--PERFECTION. Definitely try this place out, I can't wait to go back. read more

With many spots closed for the winter holidays, the gf and I ended up at Kunjip for some warm food on a cold, blustery evening! The place is pretty spacious, with lots of seating, for large and small groups alike. We got the Bibim Naeng Myun and the Galbi Tang. The former was a miss, while the latter was a hit. After coming here, ordering the Bibim Naeng Myum for myself, I've realized how spoiled I've been having LA Ktown close by for Korean food. The noodles here were quite congealed and mushy, more-so than usual. The small bowl of soup provided was extremely bland, and unappetizing after trying... The Galbi Tang: extremely delicious! Forget your traditional BBQ Beef, Spicy Pork, Galbi, etc. Say hello to beef stews: the Galbi Jiim and Maeun Galbi Jim, beef short ribs with house special soy or spicy sauce, broccoli, sweet potato, carrot, sesame seeds, and boiled egg. It comes out in a sizzling pot and is full of yummy goodness. The beef is super tender nad very flavorful!!! It's expensive, though, so price accordingly, but large enough to feed multiple people. For a cold night in the Bay Area, what's better for dinner than a bowl of hot Korean ox-tail bone soup? I firmly believe that Los Angeles Korean food tops Bay Area korean food any day, but this place is a decent option if you're in the Santa Clara area ever. It's a pretty bare-bones restaurant that only has 11 items...I definitely enjoy the simplicity of the menu compared to a place like the Cheesecake factory. Don't come here for the service, cause that's not what it's about. + SUL RANG TANG: Ox bone soup with beef shank and white noodles. Their basic soup that's got good flavor. Not too many fixings in this one but if you're not feeling adventurous and want to go with the OG soup, this is the one. Add some salt and green onion depending on your taste. + GALBI TANG: Beef shortrib soup with jujubes and egg. This soup definitely has more of a fuller body than the Sul Rang Tang. The Sul Rang Tang is more mellow and subtle, while the Galbi Tang is more of a "in your face" soup. The shortrib is a bit of an afterthought as I don't think it had much flavor or texture, but it was a satisfying dish. + GORI GOMTANG: Listed under their "Energy Tonic Soups," the Gori Gomtang is an oxtail soup with green onions, dried jujube, and chunks of oxtail meat. This was my favorite of the three. The meat itself was very tender and still had flavor, and the soup itself didn't need any more salt. Before any Kunjip fans flame me (the like has happened before), let me preface by saying that I'm sure this is the best possible version of this kind of food. If you already know that you like the cold noodle dish known as naengmyeon (the cheapest item on the menu, and not all that cheap at $9), then by all means go check it out. As for myself and my two friends (Chinese American, if that helps), this stuff was kinda lost on us, perhaps we didn't grow up eating it. I enjoyed the pear in my bibim (chili sauce ) naengmyeon, but the flavor was unexciting and mostly lost on me, and I do consider myself a fan of Korean food and diverse flavors, generally speaking. I left most of the noodles in the bowl, and usually I take extra food home even if it's just okay. One of my friends got the mul naengmyeon which contained a kind of slush to it, and he was similarly not impressed (to be fair, both of them liked the bibim variety better but neither was thrilled. If they were writing this review, it would be a tepid three stars). The soup might be better, but there just isn't a lot of room to maneuver in terms of choices (the reviews did warn us that the menu was small, but I guess I still expected more than nine options). Also, for some reason we were the only table that who didn't get kimchi as one of our side dishes. Perhaps they profiled us as not being able to handle the spiciness; it would have been true for one of us, I suppose, and as for me I had to stop eating the cucumber side dish (the highlight) because I never got a refill on the cold wheat tea. Just be aware that it is highly specialized and absolutely not for everyone. As another reviewer remarked, they are clearly doing great business (earlier they'd been taking names), so I don't think some narrow-minded white guy is going to bring them down with this dissenting opinion. read more

A friend of mine took me here because I was hung over as hell and wanted a cure-all korean soup experience. Usually my go to hang over korean soup is sul long tang, but this time I wanted to try something new. The restaurant was packed when we got there (around noon). Looked cracking with all these other asians customers so I thought alright, this has got to be good. The wait luckily was only about 15 minutes. I seriously had high hopes, but the food was meh. I have to preface this review by saying this used to be my absolute favorite restaurant in the South Bay. Their soups and stews are on par with my mom's, or so I thought. I LOVED THIS PLACE. Before moving out of Sunnyvale this past weekend (9/7/2013), I wanted my last South Bay meal to be at Kunjip. I went and ordered my usual, the galbitang (short rib soup). I found a huge 1/2" fly swimming in it, so I asked for another bowl. After waiting for over five minutes (I'm pretty sure it doesn't take that long to dole out another bowl, but...), I eagerly dug in, but not without caution. Lo and behold, I found another bug--much smaller, but resembling a baby cockroach. I left without having a bite/sip. I felt (and still feel!) as crushed as kid finding out Santa Claus isn't real. Seriously, wtf. And the worst part of it, all those other times I ate here before with such gusto, I was probably downing more bugs. Not to mention they tried to charge me for it, which I would've been amenable to if I had actually eaten the second bowl, but again, seriously, wtf. read more

I love Kunjip! Don't expect much service - you are here for the food! Menu was short - there were only 11 items so it made it easy for me to decide what to get. Oxtail soup was one of my favorites! Milky soup with tender oxtail meat/bone.......drooling! Don't forget to try their (spicy) galbi jim! I know it's a bit pricey, but it was soooooooo delicious! The only time I ever eat is with my Korean friends and I never even get to look at a menu, they just sit down and start ordering mountains of delicious food. Everything they ordered was delicious and I can't wait to come by to sample the 2-3 things we didn't order. Delicious by even Socal standards! They make the kimchi exactly how I like it... super thick and saucy, just like at Young Dong Tofu in Diamond Bar. The other two panchans are solid too--it's quality over quantity here. All the soups are delicious, especially the Galbi Tang and anything with a milky broth like the Dori Tang (ox knee bone soup). The Dori Tang has tons of tendon.... so much for even a tendon lover. The Galbi Jim (beef short ribs) is so amazingly sweet, salty, and syrupy; I NEED to learn how to make it this way. Most of the soups are around $15.95 and the Galbi Jim is $40 but it could feed 2-4 people. Everything happens fast here because a lot of people are waiting. Ordering, eating, paying--you'll be done in no time but fully satisfied. This might be my new favorite Korean restaurant in the Bay Area because most other places are pretty crappy. read more

The RUDEST service I have ever witnessed. After a long day of work, I came in and wrote my name down and it was so crowded so I waited outside. It was 98 degrees so I thought why not get some milk tea next door. When I came back, my name was already crossed out so we told the lady and she rolled her eyes & said "NO U PASS ALREADY" which I understand, I don't mind putting my name down again. Before I can say anything, she looks at my drink and goes "NO OUTSIDE FOOD NO. NO" and FLICKS my drink and shoos me out. I like to compare the dining experience to a game of Russian Roulette. Even when you win, you will eventually lose. Go to that dive restaurant on the corner and it may be a revelation, but try a few others and then.......BANG!!! You lose. The same holds true for high end restaurants. That place that put you $200 in the hole might be worth it, but that other place left you confused and lacking in self-esteem from the rude and humbling service. Sometimes the uncertainty makes me want to stay at home and watch reruns of the Deer Hunter instead. Anyway, I know it's a bit harsh to give a restaurant with otherwise pretty good food such low marks for service, especially a Korean restaurant (not usually known for courteous service), but I have to make an exception here. It's one thing to point the revolver at your own head, it's quite another to replace the revolver with a shot gun and put everyone else in danger. I've been here a few times before and each time my general happiness, or lack thereof, seemed to depend on whether my waitress was one of the rude and incompetent ones or the helpful and cheerful ones. And by rude and incompetent I means things like taking away the condiments on the table right before we have a chance to use it without so much as pausing to look at us. Things like waiting almost 20 minutes to get a waitress to take our order, giving her the order, and then having to hear a giant Z-snap like exhale, rolling eyes and an annoyed voice asking us to count out our orders again (hey lady, that's what the paper pad and pencil are for....and math is a fairly old development). Why work there if you are so annoyed by, well, the CUSTOMERS?!?!? Now if had been alone, I would have let it go. But don't act that way to my wife and my father, mother and sisters (who had traveled a long distance to visit us). We were all very patient and courteous until that little sample of huff-puff. Of course, this wasn't the first time we've experienced that, which has made take-out de riguer here. You see, I so wanted to give this place 3-4 stars, but I'm relegated to almost giving it 1 star. Kunjip is saved only by the excellent bi bim and mul naeng myun. The sul long tang is good, but I detect milk in the soup. Russian roulette is only fun for the observer, never the participant. But certainly, it's not for the next-of-kin. Improve the service, and you have a winner. But head wounds are hard to heal. read more

I can't wait to come here again! The boyfriend and I were looking for a good authentic Korean restaurant to eat at and Yelp directed us here. Props to Yelp for helping us find this place! This place is definitely an authentic Korean restaurant. I think my boyfriend was the only non-Korean customer in the entire restaurant. If you're looking for a delicious home cooked hearty Korean meal then this is the place. They mainly serve soups, cold noodles, and braised short ribs. Not your typical Korean restaurant. So if you're looking for your average Korean tofu or BBQ then this isn't the place for you. The menu here isn't very extensive but the food they serve is excellent. We decided to go for the Kalbijjim (aka Korean braised short ribs). SO DELICIOUS! I cannot even fully describe it in words. It was served steaming hot in a clay bowl and the meat was oh so tender. Every bite was delicious and just kept me craving for more! If you are a fan of Korean BBQ short ribs then you will definitely like Kalbijjim. I will say that it is on the pricier side. A little over $30 for one order but it's plenty for two people. It comes with rice too. The banchan selection sparse but nonetheless authentic and delicious! I think they gave us about 3 different dishes, kimchi, picked radish, and spicy cucumbers. All very good! The food is as authentic is you can get. Came here last night, and I think it's a good find. I ordered the: SHORT RIBS W/SPECIAL SAUCE (#11 on the menu) - Lots of Yelp reviews pointing me to this dish. This is a stew preparation, so if you're after the traditional thin short ribs, this in not your dish. But I liked it and the sauce is definitely tantalizing, even though I'm definitely a thinner short rib lover over the thicker version. Word of caution on the portion size, it's huge and it's definitely a 2, if not a 3 person dish. CLEAR SOUP WITH NOODLE - Not sure of the Korean name but is was #2 on the menu. I liked this a lot and I can understand why it's one of the most popular items on the menu. It's true, simple is always better. Delicious broth and it was served piping hot. I wish they would provide a better utensil for serving the soup into the smaller bowls. The ladle doesn't cut it and chopsticks don't work well on those slippery vermicelli noodles. The beer was served cold. There were 3 side dishes and they were all very good. Most Korean places give you more of a variety of side dishes, but these three were so good, I didn't miss the variety. Tables too close together for my liking. Depending on where you're seated, you might feel uncomfortable with someone right next to you. Wasn't thrilled with service either. Tons of middle-aged Korean woman running around, looking frantic and somewhat distracted, but it was very hard to get anyone's attention. It was comical. So many servers running all around me and I'm sitting there with my hand up mumbling to myself, "hellooooo???" That said, I'll be back with my wife (this was a solo adventure). She loves Korean food too and I like the menu that zeros in on their specialty dishes. read more

I had tried Galbi Jim in LA but now I find a delicious place have Galbi Jim in the Bay Area. One pot of Galbi Jim can feed 4 people which is save a lot of money. Also you must try Bibim Naeng Myun if you don't feel full enough. read more

This place has NO vegetarian options. Luckily I eat fish! I got the buckwheat noodles with raw fish. I couldn't really tell what type of meat it was when I was eating it because it's absolutely drenched in spicy/sweet sauce, but it was pretty chewy and delicious. My mom had been super craving Korean cold noodles because of the summer heat, so we finally made our way to Kunjip this past Monday. I've only had the cold noodles like twice before, and that was in SD, so I don't exactly know what good cold noodles are supposed to taste like, and how Kunjip stacks up to other places in the Bay Area, but a few friends had recommended it to me, so I was hopeful that I'd have a yummy meal. We swung by around 6pm, and the restaurant was fairly empty. Maybe too early for dinner for a lot of people. We were seated immediately, and after briefly going through their menu, we both confirmed our choice of the mul naegmyun aka cold noodles. There are two other cold noodle dishes, but this one is my mom's favorite, so I opted for it as well. After ordering, we immediately received three side dishes including the standard kimchi, cucumber kimchi, and radish kimchi. All the side dishes were super yummy. Their kimchi aren't as fermented as usual I think, so they all maintain a nice firmness when you bite into it. Great, fresh flavor, and like all Korean restaurants, free refills. We only ended up getting one refill of each dish, and that was more than enough between the two of us. The main entree came out shortly after. On the table, there is mustard and vinegar if you want to flavor your broth, but I, personally, like to flavor the spoonful of broth I'm about to eat. Not sure if that's weird or wrong, but that's just how I do it. The broth itself is nice and chilled as ice is added to the dish, and it has a nice mellow meaty flavor with a slight tang to it. It's just super refreshing, and to add to the refreshing quality, the bowl also contains julienned cucumbers, and some melon slice. The noodles are topped with a few slices of beef and half a hard boiled egg, for some protein. They're not flavored or anything, but it's nice to get some heartiness with the noodles. Now for the noodles. Oh man, the noodles were just next level. We were given scissors to cut the noodles as they are extremely long, so after cutting them and biting into it, I was in heaven. The noodles are cooked super well alllowing for a great chew, and then the broth just compliments the noodles so well. The dish made sound pretty simple, but the flavors really deliver, so I'd definitely recommend it. I really did enjoy those cold noodles, but since I haven't tried other things on their menu, I'm skeptic to give them 5 stars, and like most asian restaurants, the service is very basic. You order, they give you food, you ask for bill, it comes. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I guess growing up in America, sometimes you expect a little more. Don't be deterred! This is NOT a Korean BBQ place! The menu consists only of soup and cold noodles (I don't think they had warm noodle soup, which would have been more in tune with my tastes). Don't get me wrong though...Kunjip seems to be a hit with the Koreans. The place was packed and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. However, my ox tail soup was lacking and my girlfriend's cold noodles were just a-ok. The meat with her noodles weren't that tasty (especially considering I had palace bbq buffet for lunch that day) and my soup was somewhat bland, despite the salt and green onion I added. I'm not Korean and I can't be a good judge for non-BBQ Korean joints like Kunjip, but I gave it a try for the hell of it and left unsatisfied. read more
