Asian owned French food restaurant but seems pretty consistent to the French food I've had while abroad. Pros Good food. Fresh flowers! Cute little budvases. Bake their own bread! To die for soufflé. ESCARGOTS. Good service. Cons Parking can be tough in this limited strip mall parking lot. Food can take a long time to come out. Price point is steep, given this is a small SGV joint. To be fair, however, they're a rare commodity in this neck of the woods so I guess they can basically do what they want. Please do yourself a favor and upgrade to the french onion soup. This reminded me of dog food. Ugh. Salad: 2.5/5 Is this a salad or is this ranch soup with a bit of lettuce? Lol. Aside from too much dressing, it was decent. The leaves were crisp. Meh Escargots: 3.5/5 A lot of people recommended this dish, so we had to try. It was pretty decent, nothing special. I felt like it was a tad too salty, but I still enjoyed it. I would order it again. Rack of Lamb: 5/5 Ordered medium rare, and it was PERFECT! Super tender and juicy; the sauce it came in was absolutely worthy to write home about! It was sprinkled with spices, so there was no smell. The squash and potatoes were a divine side to go with. Escargot - good taste but kind of salty for most of us. Soup - tasted like those cream soups from packages but it wasn't bad. Salad - butter lettuce with good sauce. But only one cherry tomato. They could have added more because the salad was so simple and plain that it didn't seem interesting (especially for foodies and photos) Chilean Seabass - very good and flaky. Capers and lemon added a nice touch. Could use more garlic to give the flavor more of an umph. Duck - tasted gamey and very fatty. Although duck is more fatty, this was very fatty. Shrimp and Scallop - kind of salty. Shrimp was whole which is good because some places cut theirs in half. Each plate had snap peas, rice and sweet potatoe puree which again seemed like more could have been added. It was so sparsely plated. Service was good. I would say above normal expectations for a place run by older Asians. I know it's a bad stereotype but they usually hustle you in and out but not here. They actually served. read more

We were looking for a nice French restaurant for the wife's birthday, and thought of the major French restaurants in Los Angeles. However, Vietnamese French is something that was not on the radar, and the blip we saw was both close and value priced for the amount and taste of fine dining. Located on San Gabriel Boulevard in Rosemead is a rather non-descript restaurant that is very service-oriented operation and never failed to please me with their responsive attitude and remarkable food. It was unique fing rabbit on the menu, so I had to try it, and the duck in Orange sauce a must. Lamb and fillet mignon were also a hit, with no regrets about each of our selections. Tea and coffee come at the end of the meal along with dessert or souffle if you were smart enough to order it at the beginning of your journey. Where do I begin. The food here is to die for, the flavor in every dish just screams to eat. The coq-au-vin had so much to offer that I almost got a second plate. I would say it's worth checking out at least once if you're in the area. It's a Vietnamese French restaurant. We weren't greeted when we arrived, they saw us but didn't greet us. They simply walked past us and continued whatever they were doing. There was one person taking orders, while others were kitchen staff that mainly brought out food. The service was slow and it was tough getting a water refill because the staff would not even look our way. And no, it wasn't busy or packed. We had sea bass, rack of lamb, and the duckling. The meats were nicely cooked, really enjoyed the sweet potato purée. We got to try escargot which super fragrant and garlicky, you can dip it on the garlic oil it's cooked in, but it was a bland. I then tried escargot which was just forgettable. Like why is this a delicacy it tastes like nothing lol. The steak was aight - definitely not the best I've had in my LIFE but a good enough portion and quality to warrant a 4-star, I guess. I guess part of the charm of this place is that it's sort of a hidden gem in this suburban immigrant community where there aren't really too many "fancy" places - those are all in the city of LA. Called to make a reservation on a Saturday and was told 8:30pm was the only spot available so we took it. Arrived on time to be told the kitchen was closed already even though we were told on the phone that it closes at 9pm. Told the host we had a reservation. Stood around for 5 minutes while the waiters talked to each other and checked their books and finally decided to just leave because even if they were going to seat us I wouldn't expect good service after that incident. The business should update their Yelp hours and make sure the staff is aware of when the kitchen actually closes so people don't get excited to go to a nice place for dinner only to be told the kitchen is closed even though you arrive when you're told to. read more

Absolutely one of the most horrendous and intolerable services experienced. It was not my idea to come out to dinner at any establishment lower than Ruth Chris, Fleming's, or Houston's. My dad suggested this place, but I can honestly care less. How in this world can you explain to me it takes 15 mins to have no server attend to you?! Like seriously no water, no bread, and no waiter to be found. Like they wouldn't even come over until you waved them down. This place is literally like the size of my closet, so I don't understand how the service would lack at all. There are 3 staff member running around and not one could assist you in any way or manner. Wow can looks be deceiving! I probably would've never stopped at this restaurant based on the exterior of the restaurant alone. There's nothing fancy about it. Very plain in a strip mall with a small parking lot in Rosemead. Wow the food speaks for itself!!! Dinner comes with soup, salad, and coffee or hot tea. No iced tea is offered FYI. Split pea soup was silvery smooth and delicate. Very well made. The salad was presented nicely with a single cherry tomato and a good tasting dressing. Also the salad was not soaking in the dressing either. We ordered some Escargots and they were fabulous! The sauce it was cooked in we used for our table bread to soak up! Wow! For entrees I was having a very hard time on just one to eat! I opted for the Rack of Lamb and Omg I'm glad I did! The crust was seasoned so perfectly and the lamb was prepared perfectly to my order of medium rare and was so flavorful and tender!! I used to live in the San Gabriel valley for close to 20 years and my go to place for French cuisine was La vie. This was a restaurant that I would visit at least twice a week for over 7 years. Unfortunately I left the SGV and moved to Ventura county and I stopped visiting this restaurant. Had the pleasure of returning today and while the quality of the food/meal was second to none the service left much to be desired. I had two waiters literary lie to my face that they did offer an item that I requested verbally and when I asked for the menu to order dessert the item was listed in the menu. The waiters were not attentive to the customers needs. For example purchased a bottle of wine from them they opened the bottle and placed a cork back in without offering to pour a taste or serves the other guests. Had the service not been sub par I would have given this establishment 5 stars. read more

It started out with some sourdough bread, then a split pea soup. Not my favorites. They had choices for the main entrees... like chicken, steak, prime rib, lobster, etc. My wife chose the chicken, but they messed up on the pre order and it took about 20 minutes or so before she got her meal. My family has been coming to La Vie for 10+ years... and even though it's a very reasonably priced meal, for some reason we only come on special occasions (birthdays, Mother's day, etc.). We were there most recently for a birthday and so were about 4 other tables at the restaurant! [Ambiance] It's an interesting decor where it kinda feels likes your slightly out of touch older Asian aunt/uncle tried to set a romantic aura for your dinner. All the tables are covered in this light pink fabric. Every table is adorned with a single flower. But the chairs feel kind of straight out of an older Chinese restaurant. Plus the lights are dimmed for an attempted extra layer of romance. Also the restaurant can get quite loud with Chinese/Vietnamese/English chatter. [Starters] LOVEEEE the complimentary hot, fresh bread! Perfect on its own, with butter, or even dipped into the complimentary soup! Salad and soup also come with every entree: - The salad is a few pieces of iceberg and lettuce, with a single cherry tomato. It comes drenched in a ranch-like dressing that I like to ask for on the side. - The soup is usually a cream of potato soup that is thick and not too salty. Pairs well with the bread! [Appetizer] We also got the Pate and the Escargot. Pate is just alright - it's a little chunky and could have definitely been a smoother spread. But flavor-wise, it was just the right amount of sweetness. I'm not a fan of snails... but my parents are. They had no complaints about the escargot, and we all enjoyed dipping our bread in the buttery, garlicky goodness that the escargot came in. [Entrees] The filet mignon was the special of the night and was just mediocre. Definitely generous in portion, but slightly bland. We also tried the rabbit... which was mild and tasty, but nothing phenomenal. The real winners are the BROILED LAMB CHOPS and the SEARED SEA BASS! For over 10 years, almost every one at our table orders the broiled lamb chops. And the 1 or 2 that don't regret it instantly once the garlicky aroma saturates our table. These lamb chops are juicy, wonderfully cooked, soooooo nicely marinated, and subtly garlicky. Comes with a side of creamed sliced potatoes, sweet potato mash, and a couple of snap peas. DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF GETTING THE ROAST RACK OF LAMB. The broiled lamb chops are where it's at! And I know, I know, roast sounds tastier than broiled. But it's because each broiled lamb chop is individually cut and cooked that I think the flavor saturates better. Most recently I got the Sea Bass and it was bomb! Light, moist, tender - and perfectly seared with lots of flavor. If this is the special of the day again, I'm definitely going to have a hard time choosing between this and the braised lamb chops! [Dessert] ORDER THE SOUFFLE in advance if you're looking for a sweet ending. I believe they need at least 30 mins of prep time, especially if everyone else around you is celebrating with souffle too. It's buttery, creamy, and so piping hot when it comes out! It comes with a creamy milky sauce to pour inside, that has a hint of orange-flavor. It was so yummy that even my lactose-intolerant boyfriend risked his stomach to get a couple of spoonfuls. It's not too sweet so it was definitely a party-pleaser! [Service] Waiters/waitresses here definitely seemed stressed and in need of more help! Service was fast but there was a good amount of yelling over the tables to each other. I don't know how I've lived in the area all my life and not discovered La Vie until recently. Despite being on San Gabriel, it is tucked away in a little corner of a plaza that no one really goes to is just far enough away from it to a point where you will never noticed it. I would say La Vie is French dining yes and that makes it very interesting because the area is largely Vietnamese populated and the Vietnamese have a very heavy French influence. To see them run a French restaurant is neat and I will say they run it well. A meal averages $20 if you don't order an appetizer and I will say it is worth it. That includes bread, soup, salad, entree, and coffee. For a decently fancy place its worth the value I'd say. The times I've been here I ordered the Escargot as an appetizer and I will say it is a definite must try here. I thought it was really good and just simply the aroma when it arrives is pretty appetizing. If you're uncomfortable with the idea of eating snails I can't change your mind anyways. I also liked ordering the pate and eating that with the bread although that didn't have the impact that the Escargot had. I've tried the lamb, prime rib, and sirloin here and they were all good. From trying the dishes of other friends I was with I would say just order anything you feel like and it's been pretty safe to do so. If I had to recommend one I'd go with the roasted lamb. Visited on a Monday night and this place was packed! The entire restaurant had only 1 server so it was understandable as to why the service leaned on the lacking side. The ambience is also a little tacky depending on how you perceive it. However, it's a pleasant hole-in-the-wall with decent French cuisine hidden amidst all of the Asian food. And only Asian food. Every entree comes with pea soup, salad (with ranch dressing, your entree and a choice of coffee or tea (Lipton). Which all was very filling especially after the warm crunchy complimentary bread they give you. (Free refills, too!) On top of our entrees, we ordered the melon appetizer and the escargot. Instead of orange melon, they used green. It was still refreshing and different. The escargot was good, too, and seemed to be a must-order at every table there. I ordered the Chilean sea bass which turned out to be smaller than I imagined but still, with everything else, I was full. My boyfriend had the scallops and shrimp in lobster sauce. They only give you like two scallops and three shrimps so I didn't think it was worth it. His papa got the filet mignon which was actually pretty tasty! Yelp voters say that this place is romantic and intimate???? Did I miss something because it was casual but nothing near the above two descriptions. My description of the venue would be banal, uninspired and common. However, I don't tend to judge a restaurant by its decor. I would like to ascertain the intrinsic taste and competence in the kitchen as my primary measure of a restaurant. I ordered the Canard a l'Orange, and found it forlornly bland. No real crispness to the skin. No real deep flavours of orange, Cointreau with the final finish using Grand Marnier. It was slightly over cooked and dry. The prices at this restaurant are reasonable and affordable, but I find that it is still not a good deal since the cooking skills are mediocre and flavours are sub- average. The waiter was a nice young man who was good at providing service, but he had no idea about French cuisine. We found this out when I asked what wine that they had would complement the Canard. He had no clue. In the San Gabriel Valley, Maison Akira, Quadrupel, Bistro 45, Derek's, Five Sixty-One (Run by the Students of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts: Such a Deal!) have infinitely more sophisticated cooking styles. Bistro Provence in Burbank, and Patina at the Disney Hall with Chef Tony Esnault creates stellar cuisine although the price is in the ionosphere compared to what is offered at this brasserie sans goût. Hopefully, the chef here realizes that making small changes in using ingredients with more savour or techniques that don't cost an arm or a leg will improve the taste and flavour in his cuisine. read more

Now, 5 stars for the fresh baked bread, soufflé and creme brûlée...the main dishes were exquisite! Here's where I had a problem: I woke up the next day gassy and throwing up which later developed into a high fever consisting of body aches and chills. Coincidence?! Maybe not..I've never experienced food poisoning but from what I've heard it usually lasts only 24 hours (which it did). wow! this place is tucked away in a 3 unit strip mall surrounded by residential, so i was not expecting much to be honest. however, i was blown away by the service and food. i got the escargot and rabbit. Escargot was amazing. Big snails with lots of garlic. 6 snails for 10$. 5/5 It was my first time having rabbit, and i gotta say i was impressed. Never been a huge fan of french food, so elected to go with rabbit because its not somwthing you eat everyday. Good gravy and every entree comes with soup, salad, coffee, and potatos + carrots. And it was a lot of food too! It was around $22 for the rabbit. Id say rabbit was 4/5. Talking to the waiter i realized a lot about the establishment. The waiter was the owners son. They both tasted pretty OK to be honest. The chicken and the sauce did not blend in very well (perhaps cook the bit more will be more tasty-ier). The Baked seafood that I had, was somewhat fishy. I've been eating at La Vie for over 15 years and I love this place. Price, service, and quality have not changed since the 90's. Where else can you get a four-course meal for $30? The French bread is an amazing start. It comes out warm and fresh, and you can order as much as you want. Every meal starts with a cream of vegetable purée soup and then a butter lettuce salad with a creamy herb dressing. When you get your entree, it comes with three side dishes, green beans, puréed carrots, and rice or scalloped potatoes. And each meal ends with coffee or tea. My favorite entree is sea scallops and prawns in lobster sauce. I love ending the meal with a fresh fruit sabayon, which is a whipped cream with a few different liqueurs and fresh berries, kiwi, and whatever else is seasonal. The other desserts I enjoy are the gran marnier soufflé (so fluffy), creme caramel (so smooth), and banana foster. If you forgo the dessert and decide to get an appetizer, go for the smoked trout or escargot. The butter garlic flavor with the escargot is amazing. I typically slather the butter and garlic on the French bread. So delicious. It's best to make a reservation and plan to be at La Vie for at least 2 hours.
