Valentine's Day dinner at Le Pavillon was one of the most disappointing fine-dining experiences I've ever had. We came in with very high expectations. A Michelin-starred restaurant by Daniel Boulud, charging well over $1,000 for two people on a holiday tasting menu, should deliver precision, warmth, and excellence. Instead, the evening felt disorganized, inattentive, and deeply underwhelming. For context, I've dined at countless Michelin-starred restaurants in New York and around the world. I have never experienced anything like this at that level. It genuinely made me question what is happening with the Michelin Guide. The problems started immediately. Despite empty tables and a beautiful dining room, we were seated at one of the worst tables. Menus were dropped on the table without explanation or hospitality. Staff seemed rushed and disengaged. No one walked us through the menu. Yet someone suddenly appeared asking what wine we wanted before we had even received a wine list. We had to request it ourselves. It felt chaotic and poorly coordinated. We ordered cocktails. They arrived 45 minutes later. We checked multiple times and were ignored or avoided. Eye contact was actively avoided as servers walked past. When the martini finally arrived, it cost $72 and tasted terrible. To their credit, they eventually comped it because they knew something had gone wrong. But comping a bad cocktail does not fix a Valentine's Day dinner that was meant to feel special. Wine service was frustrating. Asking to decant the bottle felt like an argument rather than a simple request. Glasses were filled excessively, half a bottle poured into one glass, which is unprofessional. The wine glasses themselves felt surprisingly cheap for this price point. The food did not redeem the experience. The amuse-bouche was bland. The foie gras was the only genuinely good course. After that, it declined sharply. The pasta was ordinary, basic tomato sauce with a tiny, nearly tasteless piece of lobster. The halibut was completely underseasoned and flavorless. Plates were cleared while we were still eating. Dishes were delivered with rushed, mumbled explanations. Eight different people seemed to serve us, yet no one took ownership of the table. Water glasses were not refilled. I had to ask three times. Wine glasses were not refilled either, and at one point I poured my own wine. Before the duck course, a server removed one of our plates with food still on it and incorrectly told us dessert was next. It wasn't. Then he returned to say steak was next. Also incorrect. The duck itself was bland and underseasoned. Painting sauce on a plate does not compensate for lack of flavor. The bread was stale and tough. The bathroom was messy, tissues on the floor. Small details matter at this level. Dessert, a soufflé, was overly sweet and unbalanced. Nothing justified the cost. When you spend over $1,000 for two people on Valentine's Day, you expect care, polish, and memorable cuisine. Instead, the evening felt rushed, impersonal, and shockingly mediocre. The interior is beautiful. That is the only positive I can honestly give. Perhaps it was a bad night. But at this price point, that is not an acceptable excuse. We will not return, and I cannot recommend this restaurant.
The three course meals was one of the best food experiences I've had yet. The steak was insanely flavorful - I was savoring every bite. And if given the option I'd literally eat the hazelnut dessert every day until I die. It was incredible. The waiters were amazing and explained to you exactly what each thing was when they delivered it to the table and were incredibly professional. Atmosphere is very business-lunch, which makes sense because that's why I went!
$145 for 3 courses or $205 for 6 courses. The dishes I chose were hit or miss. The rest of my party said similarly as well. Highlights for me were the complimentary bread and the main course. The bread came with 3 different types, and I really enjoyed the olive one! I ordered the sole as my main, and it was so so so good! The fish was curled into a circle, and each bite was super soft. Loved the corn with it as well. The main definitely made it worth it! FYI we came at 7:30 and they were already out of lobster so go earlier if you want the lobster for your main!
I had high expectations, but unfortunately the experience was disappointing. The duck was extremely salty and had a very strong gamey duck flavor. When I mentioned this to our server, instead of acknowledging the feedback, they insisted that the saltiness was simply how duck tastes. I've had duck many times before, so I know the difference between the natural flavor of duck and a dish that is overly salted. The greens in the same dish were noticeably bitter, the black beans had a strange medicinal/herbal taste that overwhelmed the dish. Also, the grains underneath the appetizer (grilled avocado) were so hard. The service was also inconsistent. The server who presented the appetizers took the time to explain each dish, but when the main courses arrived, there was no introduction at all. Another thing that really bothered me was the appearance of the server who brought out the main course. Their fingernails were very long, yellow, thick, and looked unclean, which was quite off-putting in a fine dining restaurant. Lastly, our water glasses were never refilled throughout the meal. We had to ask for more water. Overall, this was not the level of food quality or service I expected.
What a terrific evening. Great service and obtrusive and on top of every aspect of the meal. Business dinner at this spot for the first time. Beautiful staircase and lovely marble. Amazing high ceilings. Open air ambiance in a modern building. Marvel of architecture Had a nice ab to start with leeks pumpernickel and roe. Nice combo to start Selected the 3 course dinner. It was ample. The breads arrived and they were amazing. Rolls and bread with French butter My starter was the tuner chart Art. It was served two ways when were slices of tuna and the other was a tuna tartare is two crackers on either side. Great presentation likely salted super fresh tuna melted in your mouth. What a great way to start a dollop of mayo was an additional feature that provided some acidity. The fennel was also amazing and as a lover it worked well for me. I tried my colleague's pasta, and it was cooked perfectly. Al dente squid ink pasta. My second course was the pork which was Berkshire pork sliced up and cooked medium. Accompanied by a compliment of vegetables and the jus that was poured table side to accompany the entire dish. A perfect entrée that went to extremely well with the Bordeaux. The dessert for me was the cheese platter which consisted of five different cheeses and accompaniments. You can never go wrong with cheeses as a desert in a French restaurant and I feel I made the right choice. My colleague had the fig dish, which was also amazing. I highly recommend this place.
The interior of Le Pavillon is stunning, overlooking the outside area of Grand Central, with the hustle and bustle near the heart of the city. I have been to this restaurant numerous times over the past years, and have had a great experience each time. The food quality, drink selection, and service level are all up to par. Most recently, I had the restaurant week three course lunch. I appreciate that Le Pavillon provides dishes on their restaurant week menu which are not all on the main menu, showing off some different ingredients! I had the chicken consomme to start, which had an intense chicken flavor, and a hearty portion of vegetables. My short rib main dish was tender and gave a luscious beef flavor, and paired very well with the velvety potato. The citrus dessert offered a refreshing treat with its balance of tart and sweet flavors.
I had the three course lunch. I chose the onion tart, mushroom pasta, and pineapple Vacherin, and this came with a bread course. The house also added on the grilled avocado salad and chocolate hazelnut mousse desserts complimentary, which was a nice touch - especially because I ended up liking those items more than my own choices! Grilled avocado - simple, but quite nice. The einkorn grains were nutty and flavorful, and paired well with the creamy grilled avocado and dots of herbaceous sauce. Bread - three varieties, served with butter. There was a crusty sourdough, a roll stuffed with cheese, and a cracker with Mediterranean spices. The crackers especially made for a nice snack while waiting in between courses. Onion tart - a flaky crust, filled with a rich onion and cheese filling. There was a fresh green salad on the side which was pretty necessary to cut through the richness. It was good, but the rich flavor profile blends in with the other dishes. I'd recommend picking the avocado instead if given the choice, to add some variety. Mushroom pasta - I picked this since the server told me it was their signature dish. I didn't love it. To my taste, it was way too rich and savory, with not a lot else going on for it. It was beautifully presented, and the vegetables in the center did a bit to cut through everything, but I think the dish just wasn't well balanced. Vacherin - it's probably a mistake to try a pineapple dessert in the winter. This one kind of relies on the quality of the fruit because it's the centerpiece, and I think they grilled it to make up for the fact that it's not quite in season. The meringue is cloyingly sweet and needs the tartness of the sorbet to prevent it from being too overwhelming. Not my favorite. Hazelnut - significantly better. I did find it to be a tad on the sweet side, but the flavors were otherwise good. The chocolate mousse played nicely with the hazelnut and the cookie underneath, and the ribbons of chocolate over the whole thing made for an attractive presentation. There was also a little blueberry candy to finish the meal, a nice light and sweet note. The lunch came to $120 with tax and tip. I was a bit underwhelmed by the food, especially at this price point. The service was outstanding though, and it was really nice to get to try far more dishes than I had ordered.
Le Pavillon is breathtakingly beautiful. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was elegant and peaceful with lots of greenery. The host and hostess were welcoming, and our waiter was fantastic, attentive without being intrusive. It was my birthday and throughout the evening, the staff would wish me a happy birthday. We were seated by the window, and the view was stunning. For dinner I had the Dover sole stuffed with real lobster chunks and it was absolutely delicious, and for dessert, the lemon cake was out of this world. Everything about this experience was exceptional. Highly recommend.
Ambience, service and decor were wonderful. Wine was a little steep compared to France. But because the ceiling height is probably 3 floors high - truly high. It gives the place a nice sunshine for the plants to grow healthy. It has been 3 years since u was last here and the plants have thrived well. Thanks to lots of light from high ceiling glass windows. I enjoyed my seafood medley and the lobster spaghetti. They have good wines as well.
Le Pavillon was an absolute delight! While visiting NY, my hubby and I came here for our anniversary celebration and it was a wonderful meal. We started off with pre-dinner cocktails, both of which were bright and refreshing. We then went with the 3-course dinner with wine pairings and everything was delicious. They feature "Land and Sea" entrees or "Terre et Mer." I got the 'Porc' entree while my husband got the 'Boeuf' or strip-loin. I don't typically go for pork at a French restaurant but I must say, Le Pavillon nailed this dish. Every bite was tender and moist. And their desserts were to die for! Especially the meringue dessert. They have struck the perfect balance between classically French cuisine with a modern twist. James provided great service and made our evening enjoyable. Such a beautiful restaurant, filled with lush plants and lots of natural light from the ceiling to floor windows and dreamy curtains. We had a wonderful time dining with them.
I came here for both lunch and dinner within a month. Both for business occasions. Lunch: there were quite a few tables available on a weekday, so don't think it's a must for reservations? Bread and butter: bagel-like bread, sliced sourdough (I think) and lavash which was crispy. Decent bread and the butter was good too, although not enough for our party. I'd think they'd give more if asked. They do a 2 or 3 lunch prie fixe where you can pick an appetizer and entree (and dessert). I thought both of my selections were just okay, given the price. The avocado in particular was underwhelming, and I'd pick it based on reviews. I was also left a little hungry despite the bread, which is a testament to the smaller portion size of the entree. Grilled avocado Sea bass Dinner: had reservations, but still quite a few tables available. Nice thing was that my counterpart was late, but I didn't get pressure from the staff about it. I got the muri white ferment mocktail, and it's pre-mixed and bottled which I didn't realize. It's sort of a light dessert wine, not sure that I liked it, but perhaps because I was in the mood for a refreshing crafted drink. I did get the white wine Bordeaux, which was fruity and lovely, and I'd get again. Bread options were slightly different and there was an olive bread that was particularly good. The spaghetti and the Dover sole were better dishes than my lunch. The spaghetti was a little too rich than I'd like but plenty of caviar but the sole was well paired with the artichoke. I got the chocolate cafe dessert which was probably bigger than the two prior dishes altogether - this was tasty too. However, I was left feeling hungry after I started walking back, perhaps not enough protein. I don't know that I'd come back here or would have to do a tasting menu. This is the first time I've left hungry twice from the same restaurant. And for that cardinal sin, I have to give it one star given the price point.
We were excited to try Le Pavillon but unfortunately our experience was pretty disappointing. The service was poor and honestly intrusive. From the moment I arrived I felt like I was being watched, almost as if the server assumed I was going to dine and dash. She hovered uncomfortably close the entire time and it made for an awkward meal. Food was hit or miss. The corn soup was the best part of the savory courses, but the lobster spaghetti came out ice cold and congealed. The short rib tasted off, almost like canned dog food, and the polenta was gritty and chunky instead of smooth -- more like gummy farro with rind, as if it had been sitting out. Our plates were burning hot which felt like they had been under the heat lamp way too long. My wife said her arctic char was just okay. Dessert was the highlight but not enough to redeem the rest of the meal. Overall, a strange and uncomfortable experience. Definitely not what I expected from a restaurant of this caliber.
We've been here once before but for their lunch menu so wanted to come back to try their dinner. We made a last minute reservation for a weekend dinner. On arrival we were greeted and brought upstairs where they took us to our table. Service was professional and in line with other similar restaurants. The three course prie fixe was great - I started with the avocado, followed by beef, before ending with nectarine dessert. Everything was delicious and beautifully plated. The steak was cooked exactly as requested as well. The restaurant itself is beautiful with very high ceilings and a lovely view of Grand Central and the Chrysler Building which is also lovely at night. Very nice experience overall- recommend them for both their lunch and dinner menu.

Birthday staycation weekend in the city and of course, David Boulud's new restaurant was on my radar and a must try for the celebration. Been seeing friends post about this place on FB and foodies post on IG. I just had to try out this new place. Not easy to get reservations. I waited everyday til 4 weeks before I could book on RESY. I was able to get a 5pm reservation. Super happy and looked forward to the experience. The dinner did not disappoint. It was excellent and the service was top notch. The meal started with an amuse Bouche of local farm vegetables. The bread is so good. The butter made it even better. Three choices-three seed baguette, sourdough and olives with cheese. We ordered the three course meal which was presented to us but since I read reviews about the six course meal, I asked to take a look at that menu too. Three course meal is $125 six course meal is $195 and wine pairing for 6 course is $95. My husband and I definitely couldn't finish the six course so we ended up with the three course. Omg! Everything everything was delicious. The meal was exquisite. The oyster gratinees was delicious. It was the perfect combination. Almost like drinking chowder from the shell of the oyster with a whole oyster in it. The topping tasted like pesto and the hazelnuts added a nice crunchy texture to each bite. The crab was a mix of jumbo crab meat, pasta, peppers and confit. My husband enjoyed this dish and the portion was quite large. The star of the night was the lobster ($8 supplement). Perfectly poached with a bouillabaisse sauce that was so flavorful that the waitress poured on. The halibut so tender and flaky and a sauce cooked with a lot a strong cremini taste was poured around the fish. We also ordered a side of mushroom and spinach. A little bit too salty but it would have been a great side if a little less salty. All the dishes were completely demolished. My husband would have licked the plates if the venue wasn't so fancy. Haha! We were actually really full by this point but of course the meal was not over. For dessert, we tried the Black Forest chocolate cake-top layer of cherry cream, cherries in the middle and bottom layer cake and noisette-hazelnut chocolate cream dessert with a praline crust on the bottom. For the petit fours, they complimented little cream puffs-pistachio and salted caramel flavor. I normally love anything pistachio but somehow the salted caramel worked really well in the cream puff. Now for the service, all I can say is it was 6 stars out of 5. Excellent service from even before we arrived to the end. We were running late and Eemi(I thought it was Amy) was able to push back our reservation a little or even accommodate us later if we needed to. She was so kind even when we arrived and asked us how our check in went at the hotel. Our waitress was so knowledgeable. She knew the menu inside out and was able to answer any questions we had. The bus boy was so attentive. Folded the napkin right away if we got up to go to the bathroom. Cleaned the crumbs from the table and even helped us take our picture. I can't say thank you enough for a wonderful birthday celebration and a big thank you for the nice seat with the gorgeous view. read more

Came to Le Pavillon with 5 others for a birthday dinner. The restaurants decor is beautiful and it's an "Instagram-y" place. Overall, I thought the food was decent to good but the service was poor for a restaurant at this price point. Food 3.5/5: I got the Onion tart, which I'd give a 5/5. The only negative thing I could say about it is perhaps it was a little too saucy but everything else about it was amazing. In appetizers, the crab pasta was also popular at our table. For my main I got the mushroom pasta, which I'd give a 3/5. Dessert was pretty good and their parm / olive bread was amazing. Service 2/5: Left much to be desired at this price point. We had to ask the waiter to bring bread for the table out after our first course was served. Then also had to ask them to bring a candle out at dessert for the birthday boy despite telling them at the beginning. Also, my water glass was empty a decent amount during the dinner. I was very excited about this place. So excited that I asked my boyfriend to book this place a month in advance for my birthday. Unfortunately I was not very impressed. For the price point, I thought the food could have been better. Nothing was bad but nothing was amazing. The service was nothing to write home about. They forgot it was my birthday and served my dessert without anything until the very end. It seemed bizarre because the birthday dessert at the table next to ours was served together. I believe it was the same dessert so I felt a little slighted. We couldn't help but overhead the table next to us complaining about finding dead baby flies in their water glasses. It wasn't a surprise because there were baby flies all throughout the restaurant. Absolutely unacceptable for a restaurant of this tier. Later in the night one landed in our water. They have a serious problem that they need to take care of with the flies due to all the plants in the restaurant. I wouldn't recommend this place based on my experience. I chose to come here because it was impossible to make a reservation and I like to go to places that are popular haha.. it was definitely worth it! We came on a Friday night and saw Chef Daniel Bouley himself walking around greeting guests and checking on dishes! The restaurant has a mushroom theme and the decor and dishes were mushroom themed. It was all delicious. We got the caviar add on and I wasn't super impressed for the price. Great addition to the Grand Central area! Resy notifications are your best friend for this place - was able to snag a weekend evening reservation for the other night, albeit at 5pm! Nice spot to come to even earlier in the night, though. There's great views of Grand Central at the bar, as well - will have to come back for a couple cocktails at the bar another time! I had the following (from their 3-course prix fixe menu): Bar | Physalis (lime cured sea bass) - super light and fresh and a great start to the meal! Normally I favor other fish over bass (especially in raw form), but this bass was some of the best of any fish I've had recently! Flétan | Shitake (halibut with shiitake) - The Martha's Vineyard shiitake mushrooms were by far the highlight of this dish. A must-get for any mushroom and/or fish lover! Also a generous portion of halibut - I was pretty hungry, and this definitely filled me up! Black Forest cake - I'm not usually a pickled cherry fan, but these were delicious and fresh (and didn't have that artificial, overly sugar taste)! Also complemented the chocolate cake very well. Coffee ice cream with chocolate - I took a few bites of my boyfriend's dessert, too, haha. Can't help my sweet tooth! Have to say I actually preferred this one, great mix of coffee and plain ice cream with a chewy chocolate brownie at the base. Basically a fancy brownie sundae, can't go wrong! Petits fours - pistachio and caramel cream puffs. Always a nice way to close the meal! Service was also nice and attentive throughout - one of the best fine dining experiences we've had yet (even compared to pricier spots)! Finding the entrance to the place was a little tricky at first, but Le Pavillion was a great experience. At first, we were seated at a table next to the wall without any view, even though I had requested a special romantic seat during my reservation. But when I asked, they were quick to give us a better table. The service was excellent, and the pacing was nice. The staff was patient in explaining what all the dishes were. The music was alright, but nothing that stood out but good enough to set the mood for a romantic date. The Oysters Gratinee, Yellowfin Tuna, and Lobster stood out of all the things we ordered. It'll be an excellent place for a special date or a business meeting. I'd recommend Daniel Boulud's Le Pavillion if you love seafood and a good ambience. read more

What a treat to be in New York City when things started to opening up again... Many restaurants didn't make it because a lot of tech folks, bankers, VCs are still remotely or working from South Florida to elsewhere. This restaurant by chef Daniel Boulud in this iconic One Vanderbilt like no other space that Che had ever built, simply stunning, avant garde, so grand, so spacious, so elegant, old glams must come back! Only soft opening but the dining rooms was filled with high-society folks, head to toes in designers, chick and polish, almost everyone knows someone there; mingling, laughing, sipping on drinks... As the pandemic was never here... Held my breathe to embrace this beautiful place that how lucky to be here to see this comes to life... A seafood and vegetable centric menu with local produces, cheese and such, beautiful plated, and carefully paired with everything! We were just wowed by the whole experience. The Yellowfin Tuna Tartare, Maryland Soft Shell Crab Tempura, Thai Sausage Stuffed Squid, just the bar menu alone was delicious. Save room for the local selection of cheeses too! Red wine glazed Monk Fish, Baked Black Sea Bass, Mussel Soup, Pasta Sea Urchin & Clam, Chilled Pea Velouté, Bert, asparagus... You got it all and it's elevated. Cocktails and wine are handcrafted and selected thoughtfully to pair with every dish on the menu, more than 650 wines to choose by the by wine director Daniel Johnnes... Wine lovers, you are in for a real treat here! The restaurant takes its name from the New York destination that's widely credited for putting French cuisine on the national stage during its run from 1941 to 1966. "Le Pavillon was synonymous with French dining in New York in the '40s, '50s and '60s," Boulud told Wine Spectator. "Bringing back that name here to New York was very important." Le Pavillon is Daniel Boulud's latest venture that, unlike his other restaurants, does not carry his name. I went on opening week, and he was making the rounds, checking in on patrons. First things first - it is an incredible space. Right next to Grand Central, you pass through glass revolving doors and either take an elevator or walk up a flight of marble stairs to the second floor that is has probably 30 foot high ceilings. The space is beautifully lit and has beautiful garden-like greenery, taking a cue from Singapore's Jewel Changi Airport. The menu is a three-course pre-fixe for $125. The first and second course are divided into Mer (Sea) and Terre (Land) categories. Everything sounds incredibly appetizing, and it is quite difficult to choose, but choose I did. The meal opened with a carrot puree amuse bouche which was most delightful. It was sweet and jammy with just a touch of citrus - evocative of the late spring/early summer season we were in. I also really enjoyed the bread basket - you get to choose between a sourdough, a three-seeded bread, and an olive focaccia. It was crusty and fluffy in all of the right places. First course - Vanderbilt oysters gratinee: These were very rich; oysters covered in a creamy sauce, topped with a briney seaweed crust. I'm not sure I really noticed an oyster buried under all of that goodness. - octopus: The octopus was tender; I really liked the onion-olive relish, and perhaps this isn't the chef's intention but I would have preferred a crispy octopus. - sea urchin pasta: Excellent flavors here, paired with lemon and basil. Pasta was nicely cooked, but definitely didn't think it was housemade pasta. - mussels soup: This was a chowder/potage-like soup, which was served tableside over a bed of mussels, potatoes, and caviar. The flavors in the soup were beautifully melded. The first courses were my the star of the night. I got to try a bunch because I was in a group. You might want to choose wisely, because if you choose something on the richer side, like the oysters or the mussels soup or the pasta, your appetite might be quickly whet. I got the scallops for my second course, and those were disappointing. The scallops were overcooked and rubbery, and I didn't really care for the overpowering sauteed tomato and onion relish. I was not drinking that night, and was offered a mocktail pairing that was essentially a Bloody Mary (tomato juice, pepper, yuzu) - I did not like it at all. Too much tomato going on. I did hear that the lobster and sea bass were excellent, while the monkfish was just okay as well. The lemon and strawberry dessert was composed of thin almond sables sandwiching fresh strawberries, strawberry jam, and topped with piped meringue and lemon cheesecake. I loved the different textures and how summery it felt. The meal ended with cream puffs - pistachio, caramel, whipped cream - and those were just okay. Le Pavillon is definitely still working through service issues. When I was led to the bathroom, I was led to the men's rooms (as a woman). The sinks were out of soap. The dinner took much too long; three hours. There were too many overt moments of upselling, like seating us at the bar to ostensibly get our table ready, but then our table was magically ready when our cocktails had arrived, and the chef's recommendation being the caviar and blini course which would have been a $160 supplement. I might come here for a nice date or if I had an expense account, but I'd want a bit more intel on which dishes to order before committing again. read more

Tour de France of haute cuisines! Thank you Daniel Boulud for creating Le Pavillion, a needed sanctuary amidst Covid-19. Impeccable services. Have not dressed up since Dec 2019. Today we went to Le Pavillon to celebrate many milestones: a biochemistry doctorate, high school admissions and a 9th anniversary of a lovely couple. The ambiance was delightful and the bar area ceiling was adorned with beautiful Dale Chihuly like chandelier. The crudo was delicious. The halibut with shiitake mushroom and consommé was delicious. This is Daniel Boulud's new restaurant at the One Vanderbuilt. I would definitely say this is the hottest restaurant in NYC right. The restaurant is airy with city views and lush greenery. We opted for the 6 course tasting menu (seafood) and it was excellent! Here is what we tried - HUITRE | "VANDERBILT" john's river oyster gratinée, hazelnut parsley-seaweed crust (One of the best things I have ever eaten!) FLUKE | PHYSALIS lime cured fluke, cape gooseberries Heermance Farm cucumber, crème fraîche (This course was very refreshing and a nice transition from the oyster) SAINT JACQUES | POIVRON buckwheat crusted sea scallops cinco jotas jamón ibérico, piperade SOLE | TOMATE grilled dover sole, tomato provençale artichoke, sauce choron (The dover sole was so flavorful - crispy on the outside and perfectly moist with each bite) FLÉTAN | SHITAKE halibut, martha's vineyard shitake consommé, cabbage, barley NOISETTE | CHOCOLAT milk chocolate crémeux, praline croustillant hazelnut nougatine (The perfect ending to a great meal!) Friday, I arrived in the city around 5 with plans to see a play at 7 pm; I decided to see about a drink and some food at the bar at Le Pavillon. I overheard that other days of the week are busier but I had no issue finding a seat with a beautiful view. Service was very good; friendly, not stuffy, the bartender was very knowledgeable and made some really interesting green colored cocktails for the bankers seated nearby. I had a Rye Manhattan and later, a nice Pinot Noir by the glass. To start, I had the jamon iberico from the bar menu - the accompanying pan con tomato was delicious and beautifully dotted with purple flowers. From the dinner menu, I selected the crab bucatini. Although it was listed as a 'starter' the portion was ample. I've already decided I'm going back and ordering this again. It was amazing, definitely not something I'm making at home. I nearly forgot where I was and licked the plate clean. I dine out alone frequently and usually sit at the bar. This was my first time here and I wasn't sure how things would go at such a fancy place but it was great. Leave your house, go to new places, try new dishes, don't worry about being by yourself. A Daniel Boulud's newest restaurant lives up to expectations. It's a 3 course tasting menu where you pick the dishes. Seafood seems to be the best options and the oyster dish and lobster one standing out. The desserts are fabulous as expected and the noisette was my personal favorite. The only downside was the restaurant was the space. They have shawls readily available so they purposely keep it cold. The restaurant is also basically in a big lobby area and while they try to make it work, there's no hiding the lackluster atmosphere. Fortunately the food will more than make up for it. read more

Perhaps the best dining experience of our lives! We are well-seasoned diners and enjoy fine food. If we had a wish list for any restaurant, Le Pavillon exceeded it and then some.... The space is breathtakingly beautiful with olive trees and other beautiful flora adorning the interior. We were greeted warmly upon our arrival, noticing that every table was just so well situated. The cocktails were spectacular, and as you can imagine, the food was just ethereal! We started the evening with the caviar, presented so well. It was as much an art installation as it was an elegant appetizer. The menu is seafood and vegetable forward and is composed so well. We had the beet appetizer and the sea bass crudo, both so simple and elegantly prepared. My wife followed with the Dover Sole and I had the perfectly cooked lamb chops. The wine recommendations were beyond perfect and we discovered some lovely varieties that were just natural compliments to our meal! The best part of our evening was interacting with the staff, all of whom are exceptionally well-versed in every aspect of the restaurant, food, and wine! They were very comfortable answering questions of haut cuisine, but were so down-to-earth and just lovely...!! We had the amazing fortune of meeting Chef Bolud that evening! Le Pavillion offers exquisite dining experience surrounded by greenly nature all around the restraint by Chef Daniel Boulud. It's located right next to Grand Central and the entrance is sort of hiding so pay attention to get to the second floor of the building through beautiful staircase till get to the oasis in the city. Seasonal and local ingredients construct the menu as anyone can see and every dish highlights the fresh original ingredients at their best. The local spanish mackerel "mi-cuit," served with smoked trout roe, as an example, entertained my palette with the significant surprise and joy beyond mackerel dish. Paired delightfully with Riesling. I usually get a bottle of champagne but definitely coming back for their wine pairing! Hats off Chef Daniel Boulud! read more

What an amazing culinary experience! For the 3-course dinner, I chose Oyster Vanderbilt (I seriously felt like I died and went to heaven!) for appetizer. Then, halibut for the main course (perfectly prepared and seasoned) & for dessert, I had the most amazing mango meringue. In a word: Wow! Another home run for Chef Daniel Bolud. New York's newest and hottest restaurant combines a stunning space, outstanding food and, for now, a prix fixe price of $125 per person. This week, we celebrated my wife's birthday at the restaurant. It is simply beautiful. The physical plant is gorgeous with ceilings up to about 50 feet and full-size trees. The dining area itself has a lower ceiling to feel more intimate. The food was delicious. We had several terrific dishes including strip loin and roasted Maine lobster for the main courses, foie gras parfait and wood-fired octopus for the appetizers, and an extra complementary dish of Oysters Vanderbilt. Dessert was excellent as well and included Black Forest cake and noisette (a mix of milk chocolate, praline and hazelnut nougat). In addition to the regular dessert, as an additional surprise, they gave us what seemed like mini eclairs - 2 filled with pistachio and 2 with creme. Service was attentive but not overbearing - just the right balance. I have been to a number of Bolud restaurants and the restaurant was packed with veterans of several other Bolud restaurants that I've been to, including Bolud Sud. The assistant manager is from there as are some of the senior waitstaff. They also gave us a kitchen tour. As expected, the kitchen was well-staffed and immaculate. The restaurant was packed. Clearly, Chef Bolud made a massive investment in the restaurant and really wants it to succeed and was there all evening greeting diners and sitting and talking with them. Definitely a great experience and I would highly recommend it. And very reasonable for that level of food, service and physical plant. read more

Fantastic experience at Le Pavillion for my birthday. Beautiful space inside One Vanderbilt and very excited for this restaurant to be part of the revitalization of Midtown. Went with the octopus appetizer that was cooked perfectly and baked sea bass entree. The broccolini side dish was also well done. Noisette and Cafe desserts were excellent as well and the cheese plate didn't miss. Excellent service throughout the meal and will definitely be coming back. However, the only negative aspect of the evening was the additional charge on each cocktail. Apologies if this was mentioned on the menu and I missed it but for each cocktail from the bar, there was an additional service charge. Certainly understand if this is in place due to COVID but felt strange that this wasn't more explicit within the menu. There were no upcharges or extra fees added to the main course we chose (steak and trout with sea urchin) THE BIGGEST STAR POINT IS FOR THIER PORTION. They are not cheap on their fine dining size. Yes. There is a 3 course dinner menu and a 6 course tasting menu. The menus do not denote a joint order requirement.
Dress code: are jackets required?
Nope. When I was at the restaurant there were people in jackets but also in long sleeve and short sleeve shirts. I do not recall people in t-shirts and jeans.
