"I'll answer that after I eat at one of his restaurants" Believe it or not, this is a real conversation I had with a friend before coming to Le Pavillon. She, rightfully so, is obsessed with Bolud's culinary empire. For someone who has had the privilege to dine at some of New York's headliner fine dining establishments - I've never eaten at a Daniel Bolud restaurant - and I blame myself for that. I decided to break in the later half of my 20s at Le Pavillon after hearing raving reviews posted online. I went into Le Pavillon with a completely open mind and a few close relatives. I figured that the minute I turned 26, I wouldn't want a bunch of my friends around because it would have probably ended up being a vodka infused cesspool of peer induced pity. I ended up adding the caviar service on top of the regular prix fixe menu. Great choice!! I would have kissed Daniel Bolud firmly on the lips after sampling his caviar and blini service. Absolutely love the inclusion of classical caviar service elements in an elevated setting. It set the tone for the rest of the meal - modernist interpretations of impeccably prepared French classics. And it's good!!! The amuse bouche was perplexing in the best way possible. The onion tart was well worth ceding a meat forward appetizer for. The main course came with two perfectly executed surprise courses each incorporating the main protein. The dessert complete with chocolate tuile almost made me faint in a fit of passionate exuberance. While I'm surely not Bolud's type, after that meal I would have kissed him firmly on the lips. This was honestly outrageous. I came for a New Year's six-course experience and left extremely disappointed. The food was subpar at best. Three of the courses were completely overwhelmed by truffles or truffle sauce, to the point where you couldn't taste anything else or appreciate the actual flavors. The service was chaotic. The restaurant was loud, with extremely annoying music playing nonstop, making it impossible to enjoy the evening. I just wanted it to be over as soon as possible. To top it all off, they completely messed up the dessert when serving it. Shortly after returning to my room, I became unwell and spent the rest of the night dealing with severe stomach issues. While the cocktails can be a bit pricey, they're crafted to perfection, and the elegant, business-casual ambiance makes it all worth it. I highly recommend trying the Thai sausage-stuffed squid and the oysters at the bar--both were outstanding! I recently celebrated a friend's promotion here, and the service was exceptional. We opted for the six-course tasting menu with wine pairings, and I was genuinely impressed. The wine selections complemented each dish beautifully, and the pacing of the meal was perfect--I never felt rushed. The salmon was a standout for me--perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious! We were a party of six people, celebrating our friends' 50th wedding anniversary. We mentioned this to our server upon arrival, who offered congratulations but never acknowledged it again. We ordered dessert, which we had planned to do anyway, but it would have been nice to at least have a candle or some sort of "happy anniversary" wish spoken to them. Pre-dinner, we ordered cocktails, which never came. We asked one of the other servers nearby to facilitate that, since we had been waiting for over 15 minutes for the drinks...on a relatively slow night it appeared. Additionally, once the sommelier dropped off the wine list, we never saw him again. We had to elicit help from an adjacent table to order the several bottles of wine we wanted for dinner. My Bouillabaisse was cold. When that course was cleared, I asked the young man to please tell the kitchen the situation, as I didn't eat more than the first, unpleasantly cool bite. "I'm sorry" was the (equally) tepid response. When my steak came out at room temperature (and that's a compliment to the dish), I again had one bite, and that was it. When plates were cleared, I asked to take my meal home, as it was served--like my starter--cold. There was no apology, no reconciliation. Thank goodness I ordered the cheese plate for my dessert: it's tough to screw that up, except that in every other (numerous) fine dining establishment I've been in they at least describe the cheeses and give some detailed notes on them. This was our second--and final--time at Le Pavillon. How they achieved a Michelin Star is beyond me. read more

Just like Yountville California is otherwise titled as Kellerville due to almost all restaurants coming from Thomas Keller, New York has evolved into a place where Daniel Boulud has taken over a big part of the market in fine dining. Le Pavillon is located in the beautiful new One Vanderbilt building and is quite impressive in its interior use of plants, creating a sense of a garden, inside the building. A surreal feeling and a design that sets an example for sustainable interiors. When it comes to the meal, the experience is sadly not at a level of a Michelin starred restaurant, at all. The service was incredibly slow. Having to constantly chase down the waiter at a fine dining establishment is never something that should have to happen. Thus, whatever training or staffing issues exist here, also do not belong here. When it comes to the meal, the appetizer of smoked fish with ossetra caviar was presented nicely, but otherwise a simple dish. The caviar served is of very poor quality, the eggs are sticky, no popping and the flavor profile is weak. After inquiring what caviar brand they use, the team eventually came back and noted a brand named Black Diamond. The main course of monk fish and spatzle was absolute perfection, a delicately prepared fish, with a gorgeous presentation to match. Desserts across the table were generally fine, but far from impressive. Very basic preparations, with a lot more emphasis on presentation itself. Small things also came into the picture such as wine glasses being wiped with cloths full of lint, thus the entire wine having a ton of lint swimming in it. Despite that, enjoyed the conversation with their wine director Blake who is a pleasant gentleman and picked a great bottle for a wine tasting. The other thing to mention in the wines is that there are many bottles at a reasonable 2x up charge to retail price, which is incredibly reasonable for a city like NYC. Le Pavillon is a combination of beautiful design and several dishes that are executed to perfection. With that said, some roughness on the edges needs to be polished off. read more

Just a fantastic experience - beautiful venue with floor to ceiling windows in the building across the street from the SW corner of Grand Central. The format is prix fixe at $145 per person (3 courses) and everything we had was beautifully done. Impressive wine cellar to match. Wines were expertly paired (though late to arrive on one course, which unfortunately made my scallops a bit cold once it arrived. Staff were superbly trained, accessible and friendly, and attentive. Went here with my girlfriend for our 'nice-but-affordable-NYC-lunch' on our short vacation here. While I rarely review Michelin-starred restaurants given the clientele is very different from the typical Yelp viewer, Le Pavillon's price point for lunch ($120 for 6 courses) is quite approachable, that I figured writing this review could be helpful. DECOR AND AMBIANCE Beautiful space, one of the most unique, with plenty of green and a ceiling several stories-high. Lots of business lunches happening. One two-top with a guy in hoodie and jeans. Beautiful view as you walk up the stairs to the main 'dining room'. FOOD We ordered the 6-course tasting: grilled avocado, snapper & caviar, spaghetti alla chitarra "puttanesca", greenwalk hatchery trout, grilled wagyu flatiron steak, and noisette chocolat. I won't go into each dish, but each were quite delicious. Never felt anything was over or under-seasoned. My favorite was the grilled avocado, an interesting take on a salad, with a second being the snapper & caviar. A few notes on the wagyu course, I thought the arrangement of the elements was fairly basic, and had, color-wise, a lot of orange, brown, dark colors. I was expecting more from the carrot terrine (Café Boulud had a wonderful beef stew terrine), rather than just stacked sliced carrots. SERVICE Other than the following service notes, I would say service was mostly good; if it's done well, nothing should stand out. 1) could use more soigné, a few things were placed in front of me back-handed. 2) more thorough check of the plating at the pass, such as messy sauces and crumbs on the edges. 3) the big one: servers not knowing the food. I inquired the beef and the gummies, each had to go back and ask. Regarding the gummies, two people separately came back and gave me two different sets of fruits. OVERALL Food was well-executed and at a Michelin-level, albeit plating could be improved. The service could use the most improvement. Good as your first step in fine dining, but for those who frequent fine dining establishments, I think Le Pavillon's main feature that would stand out favorably would be its space, which I wouldn't be surprised to see highlighted in an architecture magazine. Getting a reservation at Le Pavillion was pretty painless and my family and I had a great time. My mom has some dietary restrictions, and the staff were very accommodating. Each dish was great and portion sizes were perfect. For the appetizer I got the stuffed quail with a kabocha purée. The quail was cooked perfectly and was very juicy. The scallops were also cooked well and there were a lot of flavors on the plate that complimented each other well. Come here regularly for work drinks, love being just at the bar and is right next to grand central so easy for anyone taking the train. It's a beautiful venue, glass windows floor to ceiling. And you know I love my high ceilings. Have come for dinners and lunches and loved the food each time as well. Good for big groups and small. Although the space feels big (thanks to the high ceilings) there's actually not a ton of seating both around the bar or in the main restaurant area so definitely recommend getting a reservation in advance for food and coming early to the bar at 5. read more

We greatly enjoyed our visit to Le Pavillon! The ambiance is pretty sleek, while not being pretentious. The decor is very nice with the greenery and hits notes similar to the old Four Seasons restaurant and The Grill (the newer installment). The real star though is the food. We had the three course menu and enjoyed each of our choices. All of the plates were very flavorful and pretty well balanced while having interesting surprises of flavor in both the focal point of the plate itself and/or pairing garnishes...and we left surprisingly full with the plentiful bread options offered, which was a nice pallet cleanser between plates. We had Katherine as our server and she was spectacular with her drink, food, and dessert recommendations. Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with the level of food quality, presentation, and decor, and could certainly see an argument being made for this being the higher side of 1 Michelin star to 2 Michelin stars. Back again with my partner and had to intro him to my absolute fave app - the "Vanderbilt" which is a set of 4 oysters in a deliciously creamy sauce with a slight crunch from the pistachios and other toppings. The dish is served slightly warm with each oyster being the perfect bite. Try the parmesan bread with any remaining sauce and you will not be disappointed (or any of the other fresh breads which are all amazinggg)! For mains I got the duck and he got the lobster. The duck hadn't changed much from when I last tried it and the crisp skin reminded me of peking duck. The lobster seems to change every time I come here and I liked this version best (though portions seemed a bit smaller)! Both dishes were great nonetheless and left us feeling quite full and content. For dessert I got a pumpkin creme caramel which had a light pumpkin taste and a lot of sweet sauce. It came with a crisp caramel(?) cookie which provided a nice juxtaposition of textures. My partner got the chocolate mousse which was the same as the one I tried last time. In general mousse has a high floor but low ceiling and I think this dessert definitely hit that ceiling! It was so good but I can't imagine it being any better. I personally liked the desserts I had in the past more - yuzu or rhubarb-based desserts. Well deserved Michelin star from cleanliness, ambiance , service and of course, food to perfection. My family and I took advantage of NY French Restaurant Week and enjoyed lunch here as dinner reservations were already booked. Conveniently located across Grand Central and right above Boulard's cafe where you can grab quick bites and pastries. Entry into this establishment was surprisingly small but do not be fooled. We were greeted promptly and ready to be welcomed and escorted upstairs to a lush garden of real trees, plants and flower paths with private corners for lone diners, couples and larger parties. As someone who is rather sensitive to loud noises, I love how architectural efforts were made to buffer the sounds of the venue to create a quieter atmosphere especially with those tall ceilings. Service was stellar and I rather enjoyed watching the staff doing its dance, communicating and executing orders to each patron with a smile and recommendations. (Pardon the lack of French being used from here on) Appetizers: lobster with spaghetti-tender lobster pieces with perfectly seasoned pasta al dente in a light sauce, beautifully plated corn soup rimmed with pesto, flowers accompanied with a separate plate of a corn fritter and cheese. I can't say enough about this corn soup. It was beautiful and delectable. I'm so happy it was recommended to me by our server. Entree: short ribs over corn polenta with roasted vegetables. Sweetness from the corn and creaminess of the polenta complimented the flavor of the short ribs and roasted vegetables. Just enough seasoning to bring out the flavors of each. Perfectly cooked and tender. Family enjoyed the tender char over potatoes and artichokes. Amazing as well. Dessert: orange blossom sponge cake with crème, raspberry and a scoop of pistachio ice cream on the side. I enjoyed the many textures of this dessert- airy interior of the cake with a thin layer of raspberry puree and crème but crispy and crunchy texture of the cake exterior. My family had the coffee sundae-truly decadent and rich, both enjoyed with earl grey tea and a most delicious cappuccino that I thoroughly enjoyed. If you are seated by the windows, be prepared for direct ac blowing on you. My family and I thought a light jacket would suffice, was mistaken and had to move one seat over to enjoy the rest of our meal. They were more than accommodating to do so. The attention to detail is something to be expected for a Michelin starred restaurant but to enjoy it for yourself with loved ones was priceless. We had a wonderful dinner for my hubby's birthday and they did everything they can to make our night special! First walking into Le Pavillon, you walk up these stone stairs and into a high ceiling room full of green plants (all real!). It was a breathtaking room. We sat at a table near the window overlooking 42nd street. For a 1 Michelin restaurant we certainly lived up to it. I felt we were constantly being taken care of every single step. We had the 3 course menu which is more than enough! The tuna, octopus bouillabaisse and spaghetti langoustine were all flavorful. And the mains of canard, ribeye and Homard (lobster) were all memorable! And finally my hazelnut noisette was the perfect end to our wonderful meal. Oysters were divine and definitely the highlight of the night. Didn't even try the food but 5 stars Service was absolutely impeccable. Being that Foie Gras is illegal from California (where we're from), we wanted to try it here. We actually came from another dinner at Balthazar with our first serving of foie gras and steak frites (delicious). Katie told us that it was not available like the picture on yelp but actually recommended a sister restaurant by the same chef called Daniel. She took the liberty of sharing our qualms with the maitre d who would check if there were any availabilities at Daniel. Unfortunately, kitchen was closed but they offered us an alternative. About to leave, the maitre d Harold came by with a warm apology and explained that our dream dish was not in season. Needless to say, we'll be back in February. Some Michelin restaurants are more about a fancy show more than great food. Here the food is as good as the presentation. As a seafood and veg enthusiast the focus is perfect for me. Start with the Oysters Vanderbilt gratinees with hazelnut and move into the Saint Jacques New England Sea Scallops baked in their shell. The Scallops were not only the best I've ever had but the most incredible presentation. My partner enjoyed the roasted Long Island Duck Breast. The 650 bottle wine list is focused on France but you can find some other options averaging about three times retail. There are also about 20 wines by the glass ranging from $19 for an Alvarinho to $95 for a Krug Grand Cuvee. The very aoomodating Sommelier recommended a couple of bottles under $150 each that paired perfectly with our meals. Desserts are outstanding as well. I'm writing this review because I was genuinely disappointed by what I experienced at this restaurant back in July 2025 (a bit late!). When I arrived, I noticed that all the Asian customers -- including me and my friend -- were being seated together in one section of the restaurant, while other groups were spread throughout the dining area. It was hard not to notice the clear pattern. Whether intentional or not, separating guests by race is discriminatory and unacceptable. Every customer deserves to feel equally welcomed and respected, regardless of their background. The food might be fine, but it's impossible to enjoy a meal in an environment that makes people singled out because of their race. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and addresses this practice immediately. Treating all guests fairly should be the most basic standard of hospitality. read more

The service lacks being worthy of Michelin status. I came with my mother for her 73rd birthday. -When we first sat down, my mother's side of the table didn't have a spoon or fork. -I ordered from the restaurant week menu (the two course menu). I gave the server my mother's 2 course order, which was a main course and a dessert. She replied by saying, "and what would she like for the appetizer?" I told her those are the two courses she is requesting for her meal. I feel like she was trying to force us to pay for an additional course. -No one refilled my water. Not once. -When I asked for a refill on my bread, the server brought back a small portion (I was a party of two, and we both wanted to eat more bread). -There were several servers that kept asking how everything was to the table next to me, but no server asked if I needed anything. -Right before dessert was served, when the server wiped the bread crumbs off of my table, they only wiped half off of the table, and didn't catch the crumbs as they flew off the end of the table, so they landed on my clothes. Why even bother if you're not going to do it right? -the server came to present the dessert, and said, "Oh wait," and left for a while. Fantastic! Not noisy! The service was impeccable. The food was terrific. Each of the six of us had an incredible experience enjoying a myriad of appetizers , main courses , & desserts price fix.each dish was perfectly crafted and as described with help from the staff. Ate here for the second time with my parents, sister, cousins, aunt and uncle of where one of my cousins used to extern there last summer and to celebrate his graduation in CIA. We all got different dishes to try and eat together as a family. The food we got was really good and delicious that it was worth the wait and we seemed to wait extremely patiently to get served correctly without any errors. The service there was also attentive, understanding and friendly. We couldn't agree more and had an amazing time. Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time! :) read more
