I've always been a fan of the underdog. Let's just say, I love nice surprises! Leo's Cafe was definitely that for me during my trip out to Paso Robles! If you're looking for big and fancy with all of the frills; you won't get that here. But what you WILL get is a scrumptious meal and top notch customer service with a downright homey feeling. Let's face it; that's what most people really care about at the end of the day anyways, right?! Leo's is a small family owned restaurant located in the quaint city of San Miguel that specializes in American food classics. It's located right off the freeway, but can be missed if you aren't paying attention. The building is painted a mustard yellow with red trimmings and has a small parking lot in the back. You can enter the restaurant from the parking lot or from the front entrance. The decor is basic with a setup that's indicative of a small family diner. My group of 3 decided to dine here after doing some wine tasting. My friends had a voucher that they purchased for the restaurant, so we decided to put it to use. We didn't realize that they were closing soon since the hours were incorrect online. However, the owner Nora was super sweet and was able to accommodate us. We ordered the half rack of ribs, the crispy chicken sandwich with mashed potatoes instead of fries, and the shrimps and scallops. We also got a couple of beers as well since there were so cheap (my Corona was only $3.50). Let me start of saying that when you come here, you better come hungry and put those big girl pants on! Portion sizes are HUGE! I was looking at that rack of half ribs like "Are you sure this is only HALF size?!". Oh yes, the food here is plentiful! Special entrees come with your choice of soup of the day or salad and warm bread and butter. I started with a garden salad and one of my friend's got the clam chowder. My salad was yummy and the vegetables were fresh! The best part was their homemade ranch dressing which had a nice creamy buttermilk flavor to it. My friend said that the clam chowder was really tasty. Next up, those entrees! I had the shrimp and scallops with a baked potato and roasted veggies. Everything on my plate tasted fabulous! The shrimp and scallops came scampi styled and were marinated in a delicious garlic butter sauce. The baked potato was baked to the perfect temperature, and the veggies were a classic added touch. Both of my friends also enjoyed their meals! The ribs were falling off the bone and the the chicken sandwich was crispy and stacked! One of my friends just couldn't stop raving about their mashed potatoes (she loves potatoes). We were stuffed by the end of your meal and we all had plenty of leftovers to take home. The only drawback that I witnessed during the entire evening was due to a small miscommunication issue. At the end of our meal, we showed our voucher to Nora, and she explained that the type of voucher that we had needed to be printed in order for it to be used. I thought it was a little weird since most places accept them through the phone, but she stated that since this was a local voucher (through KSBY), they keep the printed vouchers for their records. She was able to accommodate us this time around, but double check your vouchers and make sure to print this type of voucher when you go in. Overall, this little hole in the wall ended up being one of my favorite meals during my stay in Paso Robles! Nora was awesome and checked in on our party the entire evening! She even stayed late to serve us. That's what I call, true customer service at its' best! Will I be back during my next trip to Paso?! Uuuumm... HECK YES! :) read more

Do Not order pancakes from this place. Mine were not eatable, breaking apart, not good.. And don't even bother calling in an order over the phone, they never pick up and ignore phone calls in-front of customers. read more

Great place to stop for a bite to eat, driving between Santa Barbara and the Bay Area! I didn't want fast food on the drive and was craving a salad. Enticed by the great yelp reviews, I decided to give it a try. I ordered the garden salad and was pleased that the vegetables were fresh and crunchy, the balsamic was delicious, and the portion was larger than I expected for the price. I also ordered the shrimp cocktail which is made fresh, so it didn't have that fishy taste you sometimes get with shrimp cocktail. The cocktail sauce had a nice kick. Friendly and prompt service, with clean bathrooms too! I highly recommend and I will be back. read more

What a road trip find! I read the Yelp reviews and thanks to those, I'm adding another good one! We were the only customers, so service was friendly, helpful and fast! Sat outside under the canopy - dog friendly too. Food and the plate was hot, so the food stayed hot until I was finished. Def worth stopping by! Needed a rest stop so we picked this restaurant off of yelp. It definitely gives a locals vibe. The service was very attentive. The food had large portions for a great price. I had the chicken quasadilla and my husband got the mushroom cheeseburger it was at least 1/3 of not 1/2 lb. Everything was pretty good for a hole in the wall. Restroom was a little outdated but neat (not sure about clean because of how old things were). read more

I finally tried this place. We went in about 5:30 and no one was there eating. I was a little worried it might be a sign of how the food was but no it was very good. The calamari appetizer came right out and they had two kinds of sauce and lemons. We ordered off the lunch menu. My son said the burger with mushrooms was really good. The food food was priced reasonable. For 3 people it was under $40.00 we weren't drinking, but we did have that appetizer. They have a dinner menu that looked good, but prices were higher, but about right for this area. They are closed on Tuesday. It's a small place, not fancy, but good food and our server was super nice. read more

Wish I had taken a photo. What a scrumptious breakfast in this roadside family-run Cafe! Leo's signature omelet was so good that I nearly finished it despite its size. The hash hashbrowns were perfect, crunchy on the outside. His niece is a lovely attentive server (sorry we forgot your name). Delicious! We were looking for a place to have a good breakfast. We decided on Leo's Cafe, it's was a great choice. My husband and I had omelets and the kids chose pancakes and bacon. Can't talk on the food because we never got it. We had a party of 3 and waited over an hour for our food. We asked after an hour and the waitress said our food should be out shortly. We then Waited 17 more mins and asked again only to find out that the waitress did not actually check on our food because we she asked the second time we found out that our food wasn't even being prepared yet. Small restaurant and we understand mistakes get made but if you are going to check on the status of someone's food, please actually check. read more

As soon as we enter Leo's Cafe, we were greeted by the servers. They were very attentive and always smiling, so I'm actually giving 5 star for that... I took 1 star out just because what I want to eat was not available for lunch. I was disappointed that I can't have what I was craving to eat. Our server said it's only in their dinner menu, ugh... I was starving but I really don't want to eat anything other than shrimps and scallops. I ended eating my son's sweet potato fries (and a few bites of my husband's burrito that he bought from Dos Hermanos next door). My kids enjoyed their classic burger and the grilled cheese sandwich. Nice little Mom and Pop restaurant. Park in the back... Service was great, sit anywhere and brought the menu right over. In no time my delicious Patty Melt was bright over with sweet potato fries.. Place is clean and friendly with light rock as background music. Great pit stop when heading south in 101 just before you get to Paso Robles. (Got gas at the Chevron next door) I prefer Mom and Pops over the Corp.mega chained any day of the week. read more

I am American and have lived in Europe for a long time, and I miss cafes just like Leo's. They're hard to find these days. Stepping into Leo's with its friendly service, reasonable prices for today's world, and its down to earth menu felt like stepping back in time almost. I ate every last one! The slaw was ok but not a ton of flavor, it was pretty light on the sauce. We also got an order of bacon wrapped jalapeños with cilantro ranch. They were so good! And I am so embarrassed to have recommended this restaurant to dozens of people. We raved to our friends about this place and this burger in particular. So, when we traveled with them to Paso Robles this week, we took them there on Thursday night. We passed on having the Wagyu 8 oz. burger and fries at In Bloom (Michelin listed) the night before in anticipation of this burger. Service was abysmal. We sat for quite some time with no service. My wife went in and asked where our server was? Finally, a woman showed up and said our waiter would be with us shortly. Sometime later, a friendly waiter arrived. He was obviously new, under-trained, and spread too thin. He was very personable, but our drinks sat on the bar for a long time and my wife had to go in and ask if she could take then. "No, the waiter will bring them out." Meanwhile, our friends were sipping on their drinks. We got our appetizers and then ordered our meals. The food came quickly, maybe too quickly, and I noticed no egg yolk oozing out (it was halved for us in the kitchen) and the burger overall was much thinner than the last time and the arugula was so wet under the patty. So, we ate a couple bites of it and it just did not taste right. I opened it up to find a baked or boiled grey patty with no crispy bacon wrapping. The bacon was soft, I mean boiled soft and was a small lump on top of the burger patty, not even close to crispy. More like a damp towel. The avocado was sliced but not spread out, so stuck on the left side. The egg was hard cooked with a solid yolk. No pepper to be found. I showed the waiter who was stunned. He thought we were kidding. The manger came out, looked at it, asked what we wanted to do. I was a bit surprised given the wreck that this burger was and said I don't know, what do you want to do? He said the chef wasn't there but took the plate back to the kitchen. He came back and said the chef (wait, he wasn't there) was surprised and said it was not right. The chef (if he was there) should have headed straight out to us and apologized. So, the manager took the burger off the bill but left the same horrible burger ($22) on our friend's bill. I should not have to tell a manager how to fix such a mess and disaster of a meal and service. I hope they fix their kitchen, whoever is checking food at the pass, and the service or they will be another casualty to the restaurant business in Paso. Sorry I had to write this as I rarely post negative reviews in order to not hurt a business and their employees.

Short order cook: nothing of note or difficulty. Only simple stuff, eggs, salads, sandwiches, burgers (from a frozen patty), and fried things. It's a nice place, but add some more TV's and some deliciousness and open up the faucet.
