I've always been a fan of the underdog. Let's just say, I love nice surprises! Leo's Cafe was definitely that for me during my trip out to Paso Robles! If you're looking for big and fancy with all of the frills; you won't get that here. But what you WILL get is a scrumptious meal and top notch customer service with a downright homey feeling. Let's face it; that's what most people really care about at the end of the day anyways, right?! Leo's is a small family owned restaurant located in the quaint city of San Miguel that specializes in American food classics. It's located right off the freeway, but can be missed if you aren't paying attention. The building is painted a mustard yellow with red trimmings and has a small parking lot in the back. You can enter the restaurant from the parking lot or from the front entrance. The decor is basic with a setup that's indicative of a small family diner. My group of 3 decided to dine here after doing some wine tasting. My friends had a voucher that they purchased for the restaurant, so we decided to put it to use. We didn't realize that they were closing soon since the hours were incorrect online. However, the owner Nora was super sweet and was able to accommodate us. We ordered the half rack of ribs, the crispy chicken sandwich with mashed potatoes instead of fries, and the shrimps and scallops. We also got a couple of beers as well since there were so cheap (my Corona was only $3.50). Let me start of saying that when you come here, you better come hungry and put those big girl pants on! Portion sizes are HUGE! I was looking at that rack of half ribs like "Are you sure this is only HALF size?!". Oh yes, the food here is plentiful! Special entrees come with your choice of soup of the day or salad and warm bread and butter. I started with a garden salad and one of my friend's got the clam chowder. My salad was yummy and the vegetables were fresh! The best part was their homemade ranch dressing which had a nice creamy buttermilk flavor to it. My friend said that the clam chowder was really tasty. Next up, those entrees! I had the shrimp and scallops with a baked potato and roasted veggies. Everything on my plate tasted fabulous! The shrimp and scallops came scampi styled and were marinated in a delicious garlic butter sauce. The baked potato was baked to the perfect temperature, and the veggies were a classic added touch. Both of my friends also enjoyed their meals! The ribs were falling off the bone and the the chicken sandwich was crispy and stacked! One of my friends just couldn't stop raving about their mashed potatoes (she loves potatoes). We were stuffed by the end of your meal and we all had plenty of leftovers to take home. The only drawback that I witnessed during the entire evening was due to a small miscommunication issue. At the end of our meal, we showed our voucher to Nora, and she explained that the type of voucher that we had needed to be printed in order for it to be used. I thought it was a little weird since most places accept them through the phone, but she stated that since this was a local voucher (through KSBY), they keep the printed vouchers for their records. She was able to accommodate us this time around, but double check your vouchers and make sure to print this type of voucher when you go in. Overall, this little hole in the wall ended up being one of my favorite meals during my stay in Paso Robles! Nora was awesome and checked in on our party the entire evening! Great place to stop for a bite to eat, driving between Santa Barbara and the Bay Area! I didn't want fast food on the drive and was craving a salad. Enticed by the great yelp reviews, I decided to give it a try. I ordered the garden salad and was pleased that the vegetables were fresh and crunchy, the balsamic was delicious, and the portion was larger than I expected for the price. I also ordered the shrimp cocktail which is made fresh, so it didn't have that fishy taste you sometimes get with shrimp cocktail. The cocktail sauce had a nice kick. Needed a rest stop so we picked this restaurant off of yelp. It definitely gives a locals vibe. The service was very attentive. The food had large portions for a great price. I had the chicken quasadilla and my husband got the mushroom cheeseburger it was at least 1/3 of not 1/2 lb. Everything was pretty good for a hole in the wall. I finally tried this place. We went in about 5:30 and no one was there eating. I was a little worried it might be a sign of how the food was but no it was very good. The calamari appetizer came right out and they had two kinds of sauce and lemons. We ordered off the lunch menu. My son said the burger with mushrooms was really good. The food food was priced reasonable. For 3 people it was under $40.00 we weren't drinking, but we did have that appetizer. They have a dinner menu that looked good, but prices were higher, but about right for this area. They are closed on Tuesday. As soon as we enter Leo's Cafe, we were greeted by the servers. They were very attentive and always smiling, so I'm actually giving 5 star for that... I took 1 star out just because what I want to eat was not available for lunch. I was disappointed that I can't have what I was craving to eat. Our server said it's only in their dinner menu, ugh...
