L&L is a solid multi-ethnic AZN spot near Bloomingdale's that somehow manages to place a ceiling on prices on quality food. Principle cuisines are Chinese (Beijing), Thai, and Japanesem including sushi. L&L is to be commended heartily for a SUPERB P2P ratio (price to portions). We're talking like 12 bucks for enough pad thai to feed 4 people during the meal for 2 people for two meals. Damn! I highly recommend the Peking crispy duck as well and the homemade dumplings. (I'm AZN, and I can recognize from-the-pouch stuff any time. Plz.) My two criticisms. The tables are too closely compressed, a transparent effort to fit more people than the space should really accomodate (sp). If you want to discuss sensitive subject matters with your date, friend, significant other, whatever, good luck. This also caused a fiasco when our tiny table couldn't accomodate (sp) our plentiful order, and my water cup fell... all over my crotch! The name is also annoying. Lilli is an unorthodox spelling that makes this place hard to look up at fine sites like yelp.com We wasted 15 minutes looking around for it and finally found it, no thanks to the stupid name and the search difficulties it posed. Far from out of the ordinary I stopped here for lunch instead of my normal sushi place a few stores down. Ordered the maki hand rolls which came in salmon, yellowtail, and unagi along with the chicken satay. My meal came with a salad and the lettuce was bitter and not worth finishing and the carrot ginger sauce was too tart and too much. The chicken satay was alright although it came with a bowl of peanut sauce which was obviously lovingly nuked in the microwave with the proud crusty ass ring around the sides to prove it. (but I still ate from it I mean it IS peanut sauce). The hand rolls were nothing spectacular and the unagi one was actually not good at all so I didn't finish it. I tried some of Armin L's spicy tuna which wasn't too bad but didn't quite hit the nail on the head. The staff was okaaay in the way that they don't really pay too much attention resulting in us waiting entirely too long for our paycheck. The star is for the ambiance which is nicer than that of my normal spot, but really all you need to keep me coming back is good food. The highlight of the lunch was the two people sitting next to us who could have possibly been on a date. This Indian english girl with this American typical yuppie business guy. the convo was also sprinkled with crazy ex stories and the concept of marriage. I adore this place for it's variety in gluten free options. I have gluten intolerance and usually when I eat out anywhere I'm saddened by the few choices that restaurants have to offer that are safe for me to eat. I was really missing Asian cuisine and I'm soooo glad I found this place. I've only gotten take out from here but it is now my go to when I want fast, delicious, gluten free Asian food! Here are my favorites so far (all off the GF menus): Fresh Saigon Roll (Delicious, love the mix of avocado and mango.. so much flavor and so fresh! I honestly prefer fresh versus fried rolls) Tofu Spinach Egg Drop (This soup is light it has just silken tofu, egg, and lots of spinach in a clear broth but also hearty enough to fill you up!) Triple Delight Sizzling Platter (Comes in a ginger brown sauce with basil. It was good, love the basil in it but it can be a little too oily for my tastes) Sizzling Platter Shrimp (I ordered online and requested the ginger brown sauce on the side this time and my food came just as asked!) Tuna Lover Roll (Ordered with brown rice. Every component of the sushi was fresh and amazingly delicious-- even the brown rice which I was expecting to taste blah as it does in most sushi) It may not be as cheap as other Asian restaurants, but they offer great quality, fast service (They had no problem delivering to me when I live 10+ blocks away!), and safe gluten free food. Well, as a half Chinese person, naturally I'm going to be a little harsh. But being that we're stranded from Flushing on the weekends these days, and Chinatown closes at 5pm, Lilli and Loo serves its purpose- quasi authentic Chinese food (of course, quasi- it's uptown! ) . It has enough nonspicy options, and is a big a step up from take-out. (especially decor wise, though it's drowned in cheesy red and dragon silhouettes) I do appreciate Lilli and Loo for their a good job of getting tasty food, but not making it greasy. I think the fact that they have a gluten free menu open many doors for people who normally steer clear from the delightful flavors of Asian cuisine. To note, their menu is really more pan-Asian. As mentioned the Saigon Rolls are good-- healthy, albeit have jicama in it-- where did THAT come from? I ordered their tofu-spinach soup-- again a weird concoction of blended Chinese/American elements. It wasn't bad-- I have to admit it's an Americanized joint so I wasn't going to expect bok choy and tofu soup. The soup wasn't bad, it was super healthy and a good price at $2.50 for a decently bigger sized soup. Normal New York prices for a soup of its size would have shot way up-- but I didn't like how the tofu wasn't that soft, and everything was cut in big chunks. I know that sounds weird, but I imagine Chinese to be better mixed together and the ingredients in most of Lilly and Loo's items are very separate in nature. To also note, everything thing is bigger in portion (i.e. the dumplings are massive). I also tried the Tom Yum Noodle Soup-- you can choose which kind of noodles you want to have with you soup, and I appreciated the fact that there is a good variety of noodle choices. You've got udon, egg, "cellophane" which I attest to be ricesticks (think Pho) and one other one- I forgot. The broth was really authentic and tasted like good old, sour Tom Yum soup. Some of the veggie choice, was weird-- there was okra in my soup, but ehh, whatever. I still ate it- like I said, its hard to compare this to an authentic "purist" Asian place. I was, however, pleasantly surprised when I asked for chili sauce and they gave me homemade chili oil, crushed with the flakes and Sriacha sauce. It's a good stopover in you're in the area (I work nearby), or for take out- but if you are a true lover of Asian food, you'll hate it here. read more

Terrible service and we ordered beef rice noodles soup, and that rice noodles was so bad, we didn't ate it at all.

As I work nearby and they do deliver (only a $7 minimum for delivery), I decided to try it as a co-worker recommend it. Besides, we had pizza at the cafeteria for lunch and I felt having a little bit more substantial than that. When I called, I had to keep repeating my order as the very thick accent phone attendant could not understand me. I ordered the Saigon Roll appetizers described as a vegan delight, wrapped in rice paper, stuffed with cool cucumber, jicama, avocado, mango, soba, herbs, nori, spicy mint dip, not fried -- two for $6.75. For the main course I ordered the Salmon Teriyaki rice bowl for $12.95. The grand total with taxes for the entire order was $21.95 which included a choice of soup or salad. The Saigon Rolls were tasteless. I kept trying to find the 'spices' and avocado promised in the menu. The appetizer had no flavor whatsoever and it was mostly filled with iceberg lettuce, a few pieces of mango, a little piece of cucumber and the sauce was very watery and runny. I've been to Vietnam, and I know what the rolls should taste like. This one was one of the worst! As for the Salmon Rice Bowl, all I have to say is that there is nothing worst than an overcooked piece of salmon that is hard to bite into, chewy and cold -- which was the case on my rice bowl. In fact, I had to stick the rice bowl in the microwave to re-heat it; which means that the food was pre-cooked. I've had bad salmon before, but this one topped all of the other ones -- too chewy, too overcooked and too nasty to eat it. As for the salad, it was a handful of iceberg lettuce with a dressing on the side. Not even a piece of tomato! Needless to say, I do not recommend Lilli and Loo. I should have saved the $20 and eat the pizza we had at the cafeteria. It would have tasted better and would have been more enjoyable than spending my money in crappy food. The only good part is that you can order online and delivery time was quicker than expected. I know a lot of yelpers are giving it very few stars but I'm really just reviewing based on gluten free options, not how good it is compared to other Asian restaurants...since there really aren't other gluten free Asian restaurants. First, we stopped at tu lu's Gluten Free Bakery in Downtown, New York for a snack, then it was off to Lilli and Loo's in Uptown, New York for dinner! =) Lilli and Loo Chinese Asian Cuisine and Sushi Bar wins the award for best atmosphere, food, presentation and service during my brief stay in New York! As an added bonus, they offer an amazing gluten free menu with lots of choices! I ordered the Hard Rock, a sushi roll with spicy rock shrimp tempura, mango, scallion, topped with avocado and served with ponzu sauce on the side! It was absolutely delicious! The Yelp prompt on my page pretty much said "You've checked into this place 16 times... you're the Duke... so just write an f'in review already!" So fine... here we go: I still remember the day that I walked into a PF Chang's in Broomfield, Colorado, and discovered double pan-fried noodles with chicken. Oh those thick crispy noodles, wilting beneath the heat and weight of that viscous, gravy-like, MSG loaded sauce that enveloped it. Pure. Chinese. Crack. It was the stuff that heart attacks are made of I tell you... Then I moved to New York, and there was no more double pan fried noodles. Sad. Day. Sure, there are many chinese restaurants that have something similar on the menu, but it's just not the same. There was a little void in my stomach. Lilli & Loo however, has a decent facsimile. If it weren't for this one dish, I probably wouldn't eat here as often. While it's not exactly like the stuff at Chang's (nothing ever will be), it's good enough to satisfy my craving for it. Now I just wish they'd add it to the lunch special menu so that I can order it in a smaller portion size and not feel like a bloated pig every time I get it. Lilli and Loo was SO good that we dined here twice during our week-long stay in NYC despite having a long list of restaurants to visit! Since having to go gluten-free (GF), Asian food has been a challenge to eat since the use of soy sauce is so prominent and anything fried is out of the question. And even if I'm lucky to find a place that does have GF options, the menu is often relegated to just salads. At Lilli and Loo they have a huge GF menu with a ton of options! Tip: Ask for the GF menu - it is separate from the regular menu. For lunch I had the orange chicken and for dinner the Kung Pao chicken. Both were excellent (although if I had to choose I liked the orange chicken best) and both had huge portions and came with a side of white or brown rice. Neither was too salty or greasy & had a great amount of spice that did not overpower the entree. We also had the Thai Spring Rolls which I've never seen offered GF anywhere and they were super good! They have a ton of sushi options (use GF soy sauce), a number of appetizers and entrees and even dessert which I will definitely have to try next time but with servings to huge - it is hard to leave room for anything else! Service was solid over both lunch and dinner - and the bus boys were great in refilling waters and bringing out food in a timely manner. Bathroom was super-clean too. Over lunch we were able to snag a table near the windows which was great for people-watching and at dinner they had live music (piano and cello) which was a very pleasant surprise. There appears to be additional seating upstairs too. I am very sensitive to gluten and ate here twice with no problems at all - can't wait to return when in NYC again! So nice to be able to eat Asian cuisine with peace of mind :). read more

I ended up finding this restaurant on the Ritual app, when I worked past the normal lunch hour and was hoping to grab something quick & close to my office last Thursday. I ordered edamame & the Tuna Mango Roll with eel sauce.... I will spare you hungry readers the details, but I ended up in the ER (& ultimately admitted to a hospital for a few days) from food poisoning, for the first time in my life. General Tso chicken is supposed to be something so yummy that getting it wrong really takes effort. Now to their credit they use decent meat (which is normally the problem at cheaper joints) but, for the price, I expected that. I also expect more broccoli... so stingy. The real problem was the sauce and the size of the meat pieces... they were too vast to fit in any human mouth. The sauce was sweet... but filled with red peppers? You see...the sauce itself had no spice but the peppers were all over the place... god help you if you put one of those things in your mouth. The fried breading for the chicken was almost KFC-esque... just gross with the too-sweet sauce and the constant pepper threat and giant chick hunks lurking all over the plate. It was more like a horrible game than a meal. I have tried other things here:Pad Thai. Simple right? Can you believe it has no tangly lime flavor? It should be called "lightly sweet and greasy noodles" instead. I like the interior of this place, it keeps making me think they must know something about food... but all 4 times I've gone I've wish I did something else somewhere else. I have had celiac's disease for nearly eight years now and have missed sushi and Chinese food something awful, as finding gluten-free options for Chinese take-out style food and sushi can be rough. Lilli and Loo is a great restaurant, the staff can seem quiet but when the food says it is gluten-free, it is safe. I'm particularly a big fan of the fried rice, steamed dumplings and sushi. It has been quite a long time since I've gotten to enjoy General Tsao's Chicken, and it was delicious! As a side note, my lunch companion ordered from their regular menu and was also quite happy with his non-gluten free Sesame chicken! We had great gluten free sushi...the Rainbow Volcano roll and the Hard Rock roll were fabulous. The host was very accommodating in helping us with our order. However, I'm knocking one star off for the gluten free potstickers. They were super thick and gummy. We ordered them pan fried and only one side was cooked. Completely inedible. Lunch specials are well worth it. I haven't found anything here that I don't like yet. Since I work close by, my favorite is the almond milk bubble tea in the summer time. Love their singapore noodles - best asian fusion place to get it from. Decor is lovely and great for small dates. Mixed drinks are yummy! Out of the three meals I've had here the food has never dissappointed although the prices are a bit high. Twenty dollars for sesame chicken? However the dining room is very well designed and they offer good quality Chinese food as well as sushi. The floor to ceiling window provides a good place to people watch on Lexington while enjoying your sake (On one ocassion I spotted Woody Allen). Overall not bad though. Could be a good date place. I thought there was an international treaty signed by faux-sushi places that a Rock 'n' Roll is barbeque eel and avocado, but it isn't that here. It was salmon and tuna with crunchy tempura bits. This was alright, except there was still a bone in the fish. This place serves Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, etc, and doesn't do any of them particularly well. The Saigon Rolls were 90% lettuce. I had hoped the Oriental Dumplings were going to be har gow or sui mai or something, but they weren't: just overly thick skins and very plain fillings. The cuisine here is all over the place...Chinese, Thai, Japanese, a little Indian etc. The food was great. We had Corn/Egg Drop soup, which was great. The corn adds a nice sweetness. We had the Saigon Rolls, a "Vegan delight, wrapped in rice paper, stuffed with cool cucumber, jicama, avocado, mango, soba, herbs, nori, spicy mint dip, not fried! " I pasted from the menu. One daughter had sashimi, which was perfectly fresh and tasty and we had an order of General Tso's Tofu, which was so tasty that I didn't miss the meat, I would have usually ordered. Lilli and Loo has good bubble tea and one of the only places that delivers it too! Unfortunately I think this is the only good thing they have. Dry Sautéed String Beans Pad Thai Noodles Pom-Teriyaki Chicken Ive had a few other dishes but i cant remember. I felt everything lacked flavor but was VERY plentiful. They did NOT skimp on quantity at all which i thought was a plus but the food lacked taste. The pad thai noodles were VERY bland and dry , but was almost a LB of pad thai noodles. The string beans were extremely oily and bland but that too was extremely plentiful. I was very happy with this place. The food itself was nothing to have a heartattack over, but the fact that you can come with a group of 5 or 6, get a table in a comfortable, relaxed, nicely lit room and have food that is satisfying and good tasting works for me. The service was good. Additionally, they have a large gluten free menu and I was dining with a friend who is gluten free, to her chagrin, so this was important. Usually if you want to go somewhere that isn't super classy, you can't get a good read on what is and what is not gf. I've ordered delivery from here and it was a mixed bag. The lunch special (an entree with soup/salad) was a tad pricey for Chinese: $9.50, so I was expecting a bit more than the average take-out lunch special. I ordered the General Tso's tofu with additional mixed vegetables (a $1 surcharge) and the egg drop soup. The soup was a slam dunk - flavorful, full of egg and an all around pleasing broth. I couldn't have been happier and would certainly order that on its own. The tofu entree however was sad. Since I was paying more for vegetables, I inherently thought I would be getting more food, but instead, it looks as if some of my tofu were replaced by vegetables, leaving me with a pretty paltry sampling of bean curd, chopped onion and one mushroom. Lucky me. The sauce was pretty standard General Tso's, not much to write home about. Credit where credit is due though - the tofu was very well cooked. Overall, a lackluster experience, but not one that would prevent me from maybe ordering from there again. Perhaps dining in is better! read more
