With the exception of a couple of GF dishes at PF Changs, before moving to Brooklyn, it had been much too long since I was able to feast on Asian food. There are SO many options here! And unlike Louisiana, I only needed to ask for the gluten-free menu for my food to be prepared in a safe manner to avoid cross-contamination. I ordered the dumplings after much back and forth. I mean, all those dumplings for just me??? Or should I get the spring rolls? Or ...? So many opportunities!! I ordered the dumplings anyway and our attentive server recommended I order them pan fried rather than steamed. They were very tasty!! My husband agreed. The only thing more difficult than deciding on a safe appetizer was trying to decide which meal to get. I settled on the Pad Thai for $12.50 on the lunch special menu. It came with soup or salad (the egg drop soup was delicious). My food was brought out very fast and it was flavorful and so very satisfying. The portion was large and I was lucky enough to have leftovers. GF soy sauce and a couple of desserts were even offered (blueberry pound cake and something else I can't remember). Everyone working was phenomenal. Our server was particularly on top of things and our water glasses were always topped off right away and our plates whisked away expediently. I didn't like the set-up near the bathroom. There really wasn't a place to wait to use the bathroom when it was already occupied, aside from leaning against a counter of supplies while delivery drivers rushed past. But I understand space is at a premium. I would just make sure those supplies are out of reach from customers for sanitation reasons. I cannot wait for another excuse to hit this place up. My first time going to Lilli and Loo and I chose it because it offers a gluten free menu (in addition to their full menu) and the location (near the 59th st. bridge). It was very exciting to see how tremendous their gluten free menu was, when so many other places offer a fraction of their menu to GF diners. I chose the boneless spareribs (yummy!) and the sesame shrimp. Shrimp was a nice size portion, a little gloppy, but lots of shrimp and lots of flavor. My friend ordered off the regular menu, having the corn/egg soup and the chow fun and she eat every morsel. In full disclosure, I left with a stomach ache. But that may have been because I ate it all, and I'd do it again. read more

Pleasantly surprised. Came here on a Friday night with a friend from work who cannot eat gluten. Can you believe that this place has two, FULL, 3-4 page menus; one gluten-free, one regular? Impressive! So many options for the Gluten-Free diet! There is a full bar on your left and seating area on your right when you walk in. There was live music on this particular night. A man playing the piano. It gives off a classy, relaxed, ambience but was totally casual. We were greated and seated immediately upon entering. After given the option, we ventured up to the second floor balcony seating where it was a less busy but you could still enjoy the soft melodies from the pianist below. The waitress was sweet. Excellent sushi! Super knowledgeable staff. My daughter has Celiac disease and she never gets to have sushi...we live in NC and no one in our surroundings knows what their ingredients contain so she has to resort to eating strictly sashimi. The only other time she successfully ate gluten free sushi was in Epcot in Disney World. This place was superior. They also have dumplings which she had never had before in her life and they were very good, I could not tell they were not made with wheat and they were delicious. My fiancé has celiac disease so we tend to order fully gluten free and split everything. You can't even notice the food is gluten free it's so incredibly delicious! What can I say? I had to cut gluten a couple of months ago for health reasons and I can tell when it's in my food. Today, I got to eat pork dumplings and sesame chicken with no pain, no discomfort, no fatigue, no problem. I'm a happy camper! Considering the upscale residential area, their price is very affordable in this neighborhood in terms of food portions, ingredients and ambiance. I can see the owners put in great thoughts to ensure customers have a great experience dinning here, from the fine dinnerware, clean tablecloth, cool decor, to live jazz. Although the duo jazz band isn't superb, it's always enjoyable to have live music. Lilli & Loo has a mixed menu of asian cuisines - sushi, Chinese, Thai/Malaysian. Although very different techniques are required to perfect each of the cuisines, Lilli & Loo seems to do well on some widely served dishes. It's got gluten-free, but I don't know how that affects me. Tom Yum was great, rich in flavor and fresh seafood ingredients. For $11 in Manhattan, I was very happy to see more than one shrimp and scallop in my bowl. Interesting that they added an okra in Tom Yum. For me, okra doesn't go well with this, but the green definitely made the noodles pleasantly colorful. You also get to choose the noodles you like. My friend ordered Singapore Noodles (rice sticks) which was less impressive as the rice vermicelli wasn't evenly stir-fried and it was a bit bland. Also, the pork was prepared in a Cantonese style, not my favorite. Generally, this is a nice place to sit down. I'll try more dishes next time I'm around. read more

First thing's first, I've been on the prowl for a good chicken teriyaki and Lilli & Loo's was top notch. Like seriously. I don't even like mangos with my chicken (because, gross) but I didn't have to choke it down like I normally do whenever I have the displeasure to find fruit in my meats, it was good AF. The owner and employees were very courteous and welcoming when I had an issue with my card (I am not poor and I tipped generously BY the way!!!), which I appreciated very much. One small detail that pestered me throughout my meal is that I was seated all the way upstairs when the restaurant was nearly empty during lunch. The upstairs section was completely empty as well, and while I don't necessarily like company when I'm stuffing my face, I just didn't see the reasoning behind having to sit "apart" from the few people who were downstairs in the main seating section. I've been coming to this place at least once a week during winter with my other significant. This was our place to relax, to enjoy food, great ambiance, and good service. We loved it, it was our little place. After a while not coming in, we decided to go for lunch. We had two different soups and dish with broccoli and shrimps. Food is as always very good, tasty and filling. But service was significantly different, not that it was bad it wasn't on point, there was no communication with our server, they were constantly changing so it seemed like we don't know who to ask for what. One star deducted because sometimes the breaded options (still gluten free) are a little heavy handed on the breading and not as much on the meat. Otherwise, I highly recommend. The Thai Fish is a sweet n sour wonder if you can overlook the reproachful mien of the fish as it stares at you through a film of fried panko. (Mine had its mouth wide open as if to ask, "Sister, why?") I had to ask my dining partner to reorder the anatomy because I felt extremely judged. The Thai Fish is about as long and fleshy as a healthy 25-year-old man's arm. The flesh is white, flaky, moist, and aromatic. Two can easily pick its bones--ee-ooh. The waiter was diligent with the water pitcher to the extent that I drank six glasses of water and sloshed all the way down the stairs. Be careful on the way down; it's almost as steep as a ski jump. Falling down them in high heels will require paramedics to take you on a stretcher over to the hospital laid out like a Thai fish. read more

I came in with very high hopes for this restaurant, but unfortunately left disappointed. The gluten-free menu enticed me; as a celiac I often find my dining option severely limited. I went in with two companions. The atmosphere is fair. Well laid out, if not particularly inspired. Your standard NYCAZN decor, red and trendy. The music was a bit out of place with the theme, some jazz fare I'd expect in an Art Deco place down the block. The food was hit or miss, the dishes either fantastic or leaving much to be desired. I ordered the GF Chicken Lettuce Cups appetizer as a meal with my companions splitting the sushi sampler to start and having chicken and shrimp Pad Thai respectively. The lettuce cup, though the filling was seasoned nicely, had chunks of undercooked celery incorporated in the finished dish which made for an unappetizing taste/texture combination. It was a satisfying dish, nonetheless. The sushi seemed fresh and flavorful. The Pad Thai was sweeter than expected but plates where clean by the end of the meal. The real reason for the poor rating was the lack of service. We not only never got our server's name but then went through 3 of them easily over the course of the meal. They did the absolute minimum to service us during the meal. Beverages sat empty, plates not bused, just... mediocre all around.
