My daughter requested her birthday dinner here, rude waitress got miffed because I asked for my pork well done (the pork is usually very pink* here although fully cooked) my request was simple and I told her I'd requested it that way 10 times before with no problem, she still insisted on asking the cook, came back saying "We'll try" what do you mean you'll try? I'm telling her I don't want my pork pink and to fry it longer the way they always do* she ruined my daughters birthday instead of just providing a basic request, which the cooks have no problem with! She was rude & initially going back and forth on how they cook food there. Never going back. Staff needs to check how they treat customers. I would love the owner to reach out.
Back AGAIN because we're obsessed. MATCHA YUZU ADE: 4/5. A little sweet, but super refreshing. DONKATSU: 5/5. Just look at it. Tender, juicy, deep-fried perfection. CUCUMBER SALAD: 3/5. Acidic, almost too vinegar-forward. There were moments that the sesame oil cut through, which was pleasant.
A few days ago, we decided to try a new place. We usually go to a katsu restaurant, but this was our first time visiting this one. It was clean, and the menu had a good variety. The interior was neat and modern, and even the dishes looked nicer. The food we ordered was good and had a clean, well-balanced taste. There were both outdoor and indoor tables. It seemed like there was only one server, so they looked very busy, and I felt a bit bad asking for anything.
Everything was pretty average overall. We tried the omurice and the tonkatsu meal. The omurice was okay, but the curry wasn't the typical Japanese style curry I was expecting, instead it had a strong tomato flavor. For the tonkatsu meal, the katsu was soft on the bottom even though we dined in, so it really shouldn't have been soggy. The katsu itself was just alright and not very juicy. The interior is simple, and there's an ordering device at each table so you can place your order yourself, which was convenient. The food came out relatively fast. One downside was that they had the door open, so it didn't feel like there was strong AC inside. Overall, it was just an average experience, and I probably wouldn't come back.
Small family owned katsu restaurant in Whittier. Heard about this place and have been meaning to stop by for 7 months now. Was a bit of a drive but don't regret the trip. Just wish I could have come sooner. Inside, both bar and table seatings are available. Also, option for outdoor dining if desired (believe there were two tables outdoors). You order at the table using an iPad which I felt was more convenient as you can take the time to look through the menu and decide at your pace. Ordered the omurice (my favorite) and we also tried the hire katsu meal. The omurice was fantastic just the way my mom use to make it growing up. Fried rice on the inside (but not too dry) with a generous egg sheet wrapped over it making it into what I would describe as a softball. Growing up, we used to put ketchup on the outside but most of the restaurants that make this dish now often use curry (Japanese way). At Lucky pig, however it was a ketchup flavored sauce which was phenomenal and brought me back to the 90s when I was sitting in my mom's kitchen. It was so good. You have to try this. We also ordered the Katsu meal. Now this Katsu was perfectly breaded with a crispy shell. Inside they use lean pork and cooked to perfection. They also serve it with a green chili on side which was phenomenal. This place a gem and a must try.
Lucky pig is always busy for a reason, it's impeccable eye for small details makes them stand out. I have a constant craving for cabbage salad and when I found out that Lucky Pig not only perfect the cabbage salad but helped elevate each dish, I was in love. I immediately landed on the cheese Katu and omurice. It was to my surprised that when everything came out, your meal was presented in such a way that was pleasing to the eye and flavorful and dare i say just as good as being in Japan? I would def recommend Lucky Pig to all the katsu lovers, the menu is small and perfected and never misses.
Background On Visit: Recently, I saw ig reel from Yelpla highlight this shop as one of the top places to eat at according to yelp elites. Since I was in the area, I decided to patronize the shop this weekend. Credit Card: They're accepted. Restroom: It's available Location/Parking: Located at the Whittwood Town Center. Shared parking is available in the center. Ambiance/Decor: Neat little shop with with modern furnishings to sit and eat on. They also have couple of tables outside of the shop. Depending on the time you go, please dress accordingly. It can be cold at night. Order Of Operations 1) Get seated 2) Order through the tablet 3) Wait for your food to come and start eating. 4) Last, pay for your meal with a staffer. Service: Overall, service was decent. The staffers were friendly and offered some great insight on the food items that I was curious about. Food Of Choice: Curry Hire Katsu: It came two hire and 1 katsu ball. Thought the dish was good. Please note that the katsu ball is slightly pink inside, but totally safe to eat. It's due to the way it is being cooked using a precise low-temperature, extended-frying method. It is cooked gently to a safe internal temperature around 140 to 150 degrees. The myoglobin is the source of the pink or red color in meat. Mmmmmm... Japanse curry burps! Lucky Pig For Thought: Wouldn't mind coming back to try their other items on the menu.
Tried this place with my fiancé for date night and it was such a pleasant surprise! Lucky Pig. It's a small but cozy atmosphere. We ordered the tonkatsu set and it was so good. The dish was crispy and light, and the pork was juicy, not dry at all. The egg dipping sauce really elevated it. We also got the omurice, which was flavorful and comforting, and the gravy was delicious. Overall, really good experience. Would definitely recommend, and we would definitely come back.
If you're looking for high-quality comfort food that actually hits the spot, Lucky Pig is a must-visit. I came in for the Katsu and Omurice, and they did not disappoint. The Katsu was easily the highlight of the meal. The meat was impressively thick and juicy, yet they still managed to get that perfect, golden-crisp crunch on the panko breading. Since it's served on a wire rack, it stayed perfectly crunchy until the very last bite. The Omurice was also absolutely yummy. The egg was swirled beautifully for a great presentation and had that soft, silky texture that melts in your mouth. The savory gravy was the perfect complement to the rice, making every bite feel like a warm hug. Even the shredded cabbage with the creamy dressing provided a great refreshing contrast to the fried katsu. As for the service, it was excellent and made the whole experience very smooth. They use a convenient tablet system at the table for ordering, which makes the process fast and easy. The staff was friendly and attentive, ensuring the food came out fresh and hot without a long wait. It's a very organized, efficient environment that lets you focus entirely on the meal. The portions are generous, the food is fresh, and you can tell they care about the technique. It's the kind of meal that leaves you feeling full and very happy. I will definitely be back to tackle more of the menu soon!
I found this place after looking for an omurice restaurant nearby my area. It's a small restaurant with enough seating for dine in. We were promptly seated and placed our order on the tablet at the table. The food came out relatively fast. Presentation was good and the food was tasty. However, the egg was different one than what I was expecting. Because the way it was cooked, it came out not as runny; however, it still tasted good with the sauce and the fried rice. The pork katsu was yummy dipped in the katsu sauce and goes well with the pickled peppers.
Saw this place on instagram and immediately wanted to check it out. Everything we ordered was absolutely DELISH and I can't wait to come back. Hire Katsu - The meat was so juicy and the outside had a nice crisp. The salad it came with was delicious, and WOW the miso soup!! It was soo flavorful, I didn't expect it. I also ordered a side of curry to go with this and the curry was really delicious as well. However, if you don't want to do that, their katsu sauce had a ton of flavor. Ball Katsu - This was like a meatball katsu, and it came with a sauce that I believe was the same sauce as the omurice sauce. I preferred the Hire Katsu over this just because a meatball didn't sound too appealing to me, but this was also delicious. Omurice - The first omurice I've tried and it did not disappoint! The sauce was delicious, and the egg was perfectly cooked. They also came around with samples of a new menu item they're releasing, it was a soft boiled egg in a truffle sauce. SO good, I fully enjoyed this too. Iced green tea - This was the only item that missed the mark for me. It was pretty bland, I wouldn't get it again. Ambience - The restaurant is really cute, but very small - definitely add yourself to the yelp waitlist ahead of time. There's maybe 3 or 4 tables and a bar section where you can watch the chefs cooking up the food. Do yourself a favor and try this place! read more
One of the best katsu places not just in the OC area, but in SoCal that I've tried! The restaurant has a warm, inviting atmosphere, and it almost felt like I was in Japan. There are only about six tables plus bar seating inside, but they do have a few tables outside to sit at. The service has always been consistently fast and friendly all times I've been there. Ball Katsu is a giant fried pork meatball covered in their homemade tomato sauce. Juicy, crispy, and also savory, with the sauce balancing out the oils with the acidity. 8/10 Hire Katsu - the hire katsu is my favorite item on the menu. The katsu crust has been fried lightly, and all the moisture has been locked into the katsu and isn't dry at all. Comes with a slightly spicy miso soup, rice, and cabbage. You can also dip the katsu in your choice of tonkatsu sauce, wasabi, or yuzu kosho 9.5/10 Ebi Katsu- also fried well, crunchy on the outside, and the shrimp isn't overcooked. The mayonnaise dip mixed with the yuzu kosho that accompanies the dish enhances the shrimp flavor without overwhelming it. 8/10 read more
i wish i took a pic of the tonkatsu set bc it was the star of the show! its a small family owned korean restaurant and it was absolutely delicious. the set comes with rice, miso soup, and something else. the texture of the katsu was perfect, came out HOT. outside is perfect crunch and tender inside. We were visiting family and heard about this place newly opened in the area. So we had to try it out. So we ordered to bring home. We ordered Tonkatsu with curry and rice. It came with a side cabbage salad and dressing. We also ordered kimchi fried rice. Overall, we enjoyed the Tonkatsu. It was crispy on the outside and juicy inside. We drizzled curry sauce over the Tonkatsu and rice. It was so good. The shredded cabbage salad was light and had a nice crunch to it. I did not like the kimchi fried rice. The kimchi flavors and taste was not there for me. There was not enough kimchi and the rice is too mushy for my liking. Will be back to try other things on the menu if I am in the area. read more

Can't say I wasn't skeptical initially but I was pretty impressed and want to be back to try other items! Definitely appreciate the smaller menu that focused mainly on katsu along with a few other staple Japanese dishes (curry, udon, omurice). The hostess at the front sat us at the table with menu's but ordering food takes place towards the back of the restaurant. The hostess was extremely friendly and was so sweet to our toddler. Restaurant itself wasn't very big as there was about 5 tables seating four each and about 8 spaces available for bar seating. Love the retro vibes throughout eatery with the dark green bar stools and colorful lamps above the bar. Tried the Don Katsu ($16) and Hire Katsu ($17) meals which comes alongside a cabbage salad with sesame dressing, miso soup, and rice + the Ball Katsu (3 pieces for $11). The katsu had a nice crisp without being overly oily - I personally enjoyed the Hire Katsu more as it was super tender and juicy. The ball katsu had a crunchy exterior filled with minced beef+pork. Though the ball katsu was listed as a starter - you can order a side of pice ($1.50) to pair and make it a meal. read more
I came here for a weeknight dinner with a friend and was surprised to find the place bustling with a steady stream of customers. However, after eating the food here, I can say I am definitely not surprised as to why Lucky Pig is busy - it's a phenomenal katsu place with a very affordable menu. I ordered the regular katsu plate with a side of curry. The pork itself is very juicy and delicately breaded and fried. Sometimes low-quality pork will be very dry and have a gamey smell, but this was not the case here. The dipping sauce complemented the juicy pork very well, as did my side order of curry. I also devoured my side salad which was tossed in an amazingly umami sesame dressing. The star of the show was actually their special pepper relish. Tangy and bright, it paired well with the heartiness of the pork katsu and refreshed my palate throughout the meal. At the end, my friend and I split the yuzu panna cotta and it was one of the best panna cottas I've had. I'm not sure if Lucky Pig uses a special brand of milk for it, but it was amazingly creamy and sweet, while the yuzu sauce drizzled on top kept it fresh. I'd love to come back to get the katsu again and even try the omurice next time. read more

Lucky Pig is a very casual dining experience. Parking is plentiful as the restaurant is located in a plaza. Extremely friendly and wonderful customer service. Menu is small and straightforward. We ordered the ton katsu, hire katsu, omurice, and Korean pancake. All yummy! If you're debating between getting the ton or hire katsu, I'd personally recommend the ton katsu as the meat has more fat and juicy. Highly recommend trying Lucky Pig! read more

Both the Tenderloin Katsu and Curry meal sets we ordered were standouts! The Katsu was crispy, tender, and non-oily and served in generous portions. The curry meal set also came with a Katsu ball. We found the curry itself as not overpowering, but instead sweeter, mildly spiced, more savory, thicker and gravy-like than its Indian or Thai counterparts. The cucumber salad was perfect for a summer night - gently vinegared with a kick of spiciness at the finish. The cabbage salad was thinly sliced, refreshingly crisp, umami-rich, and with a hint of saltiness that balanced the sweetness of the cabbage itself. We loved our first time experience here and will definitely be back! Ordering is done through a touchpad installed on each table. read more
The service was quick and friendly. The omurice was flavorful and the udon noodles had a soft texture to it. The soup that came with the noodles were not too salty. The pork cutlet came out a bit tougher but that could be because we ordered to go instead. The inside looked bright and well decorated. You could tell they were making everything fresh and hot which I applaud. I think next time I would want to try the starters and the sando. Overall it was a fair price, good service, and yummy udon noodles. read more

Arrived at this new location which is just minutes from my residence. Parking is convenient since its shared with Vons and other retail stores located at the Whittwood outdoor mall. It was the lunch hour, and the eatery is quaint, and clean. Most of the tables and bar seating were taken but I was fortunate to snag the last table. Orders are taken towards the back register and the food is brought to your table. I ordered the Hire Katsu which included a salad, steam rice and miso soup. The pork cutlet was cooked perfectly, not greasy and the salad and miso soup all went well together. Service is efficient, food arrived promptly, and the portions were generous. I would recommend Lucky Pig if you're visiting the city of Whitter. read more
First impressions. Social media got me, and I learned about this place through my social and Yelp feeds. I've enjoyed omurice in Japan and was looking for a place that offers this dish in the OC/LA area, and Lucky Pig does! A small group of us recently met here for lunch. We ordered several items to share and discovered our current favorites. - Hire Katsu: My favorite dish for lunch; the pork tenderloin was tender, and the fried outer skin was crispy and perfect. 5/5 - Omurice: A savory dish; the sauce was sweet, the ginger was strong in the fried rice, and the egg was cooked nicely. 3.75/5 - Kim Chi Fried Rice: For all you Kim Chi fans, the flavors are bold in this hearty dish, and the egg on top adds a nice contrast. 4/5 The service and staff were good and hardworking. It took some time to get our order, but it was worth it. The menu notes that meals are prepared from scratch and may take up to 20 min. When arriving at the restaurant, a self-serve kiosk will add your party to the waiting list. Sign in and wait. There are tables, bar seating, and a couple of tables just outside the door. Went to visit for lunch and grabbed the matcha yuzu drink, green tea, the hire katsu, and tonkatsu set. The hire katsu was really good; Crunchy exterior with a moist tender interior. The miso soup was also really nice, a bit spicy. Trying the Tonkatsu, it was similar in taste/texture to the hire katsu. I was confused about the yuzu matcha drink, as the yuzu and the soda drowned out the matcha flavor, but it helped cut through the heaviness of the fried food. I'd prefer the green tea next time The staff was really nice and attentive. Overall I'd come again. read more

This place never disappoints. I come here every month or so, and the food is always consistent and delicious. I've enjoyed every meal I've had here. I really don't want this place to ever change the quality of their food. (I had a bit of a rough day today, but the delicious meal made me feel so much better. Thank you!) I've been eyeballing Lucky Pig for sooo so so long & finally got to try it & I'm SO content !!! First green flag I noticed when trying Lucky Pig was they used real wasabi (most places use the fake wasabi). I was expecting the workers to take my order at my table, but you order at the register & they will bring out your food to ya ! I ordered the katsu loin & it was YUMMERZ ! The outside was perfectly crispy & absolutely loved the sauce you dip it with + the salad they include in the entree. The workers gave us a complimentary cucumber salad to sample which was rly nice & yummy ! For desert, we tried the yuzu panna cotta & she was creamy + sweet how I like it :-) the desert was the perfect touch to this yummy meal. Menu was easy to look at! Great portions! We ordered the Hire Katsu and the Don Katsu. Each dish came with miso soup and cabbage salad. The miso soup was good with a hint of spice! I usually do not like miso soup, but theirs was bomb!!! The cabbage salad was delicious and refreshing and a good combination with the katsu! Order the Hire Katsu if you want Katsu that is cooked less & softer inside. I prefer the Don Katsu though! read more

I wasn't expecting the katsu to be this delicious and tender... but wow, it's amazing! I'm not just saying this--I'd gladly pay to come back again. We ordered several types of katsu, and each one was perfectly crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. The crispy texture was on point, and the ground jalapeño added the perfect kick to elevate the flavors even more. If you haven't tried this place yet, you're seriously missing out--you'll regret not coming sooner! read more

the katsu here is super yummy! the hire katsu is super juicy and tender, while the outside crust is super crunchy. there are only like 6-7 tables inside the restaurant, so try to beat the dinner rush by arriving a little early! service is typical of a mom and pop shop, and i would highly recommend this restaurant if you enjoy eating katsu! read more
This place is a pretty cute establishment and a great addition to the area's trendy eateries. I tried this place out with a +1. Lucky Pig is fairly small compared to the insta feeds, but is very cute sit down. From what I remember from last week's experience, there are 5 4-person tables and a bar counter that can situate maybe another 4 people. Server and cashier were very nice. Once we were seated, we were given complimentary yuzu match drinks. The food arrived to us pretty quickly. We ordered the Pork Katsu and the Omurice. They were both were okay. I ordered the omurice, but was not too big of a fan of the groundmeat in the rice. It was on the drier side. The katsu that was ordered came warm. We kind of suspect that they reheated as we didn't hear any deep frying while there. read more

Love their Katsu both pork and chicken one. We came almost every week, sometimes, twice a week, for the Katsu if we are not on diet. Katsu is on my son's go-to menu like no brainer. The Katsu is fully cooked now and not pink like it used to be. I like it pink but a lot of customer don't, so the chef made the change. It's still very juicy and my son can't tell the difference. I used be work for food company as R&D and then QA. So I love the pink with my R&D spirit for the authentic katsu, but appreciate the sacrifice the chef made with my food safety soul. Dipping the katsu in the onsen tamago is a must for my son and I, while my husband doesn't care about that. The cabbage salad and the special yellow mustard keep it refreshing. We all love the chopped green chillies. The chillies is more for the flavor, not too spicy. End the meal with Matcha Yuzu Ade make me feel less fat.... lol... the yuzu panna cotta is super refreshing, if you love to have a proper closure with a dessert. I've been here twice and both times I've been blown away! Food is so fresh and has this homemade feel. Love the pork cutlet katsu, the omurice and the ground pork katsu balls. Service is great and everyone is so friendly. We asked if we could eat outside because we had our kids and they let us. Will definitely be back! read more
We had dinner here on a Friday a little after they opened. All of the tables were full so we just sat at the bar. We had the hire Katsu plate the pork was crispy, the meat was tender, and it wasn't greasy at all. It came with a salad with a unique dressing that went great with the food and a miso style soup. Everything on this plate was good the dipping sauce went well with everything but since I ordered the curry on the side that basically went on everything!! You have to order the curry it's sooo good. I also had the matcha yuzu-ade it had a sprite flavor with a little bit of matcha .. I recommend this place I want to come back to try some of their other items. I'm always on the look out for a good katsu place, especially since Katsu Katsu closed in Hacienda Heights. When I saw that one just opened in Whittier, I knew that I had to try when I got the chance to! Lucky Pig is located in the same plaza as Von's and there's plenty of parking. Staff was very welcoming and the vibes are very relaxing. It's a more minimal style but I liked how their colorful posters really pop with that in mind. Very cute and shout out to whoever did the graphic design. They also play city pop here, great music back drop. If you're ordering to go, like I did, you would just make your way to the end of the counter where the register is at and they'll take your order. I got the: 1) Hire Katsu: -This comes with thick and dense pieces of pork tenderloin cutlet katsu, shredded cabbage salad, rice, and a katsu sauce, creamy sesame sauce, and I believe ground horse radish! Neat! -The katsu itself, like I said, is very dense with the meat and not oily nor dry at all. It's the perfect balance of a nice meaty bite that's juicy with the very light and delicate crust of the breading outside. -I'm a fan of how nicely shredded their cabbage is, especially with the tasty tang and roastedness of the creamy sesame sauce/dressing. -The katsu sauce is also very unique in that I tasted a bit of berries in it? There is a slight fruit taste to it reminding me of a jam type of vinaigrette. It went great with the katsu and was so good that my dad kept some to eat with other stuff at home. 2) Ball Katsu (1 piece): -I just got a piece of this to try with some rice that came with the other meal as its another unique item that they have on their menu. -It's a katsu "meatball" made from ground beef and pork (could have sworn there was a bit of tofu in it too) and sauce. The sauce reminds me of an Italian marinara sauce but with more depth of flavor and less of the sour tomato taste to it. -Like the Hire Katsu, the breading outside is gently flaky and delicate. The inside is moist and very juicy. This went great with the sauce on rice. 3) Yuzu Panna Cotta: -Another unique item on their menu. This dessert is the perfect end to the meal and it's definitely enough to share. -Definitely designed for the Asian palate, it's perfectly "not too sweet" and even my picky mom enjoyed it. -The panna cotta part was nice and silky and the yuzu part reminded me of those Korean yuzu ginger tea jams you sometimes see. Nice flavor balance and profile. Overall a great katsu restaurant that I want to dine in in the future and to try more of their menu items (and any future additions)! read more
PARKING (5/5): Tons of parking. Shares a plaza with many restaurants. AMBIANCE (3/5): This is a fast casual place. Order at the cashier and then pick a table and they'll bring it out to you. FOOD (4/5): $13 OMURICE (+$4 KATSU BALL): this was my first time having this so I don't know what it's supposed to taste like traditionally, but I LOVED IT! The katsu ball that came with this was SO MUCH BETTER than the pork tenderloin katsu. It's ground pork/beef. $17 HIRE KATSU (pork tenderloin): this was good, but kind of chewy. I'd try the DON KATSU or CHEESE KATSU next time to compare. Comes with rice, cabbage salad and miso soup! OVERALL (4/5): I will definitely be back for the OMURICE. Not a lot of places make this, so it was a hidden gem to find in Whittier! Also their YUZU MATCHA drink is unique & so refreshing, be sure to try it! read more

I can't stop thinking about my meal from this place! If you are debating whether or not to try it, TRY IT. We tried 3 things: hire katsu, cheese katsu, and omurice. I watched the cook make this, and he makes it with such care and craft. It looked like he really enjoyed cooking it! It's fried rice covered in a perfectly made omelette. I could never make my eggs like this man. And then he split it open so it evenly covered the fried rice! My cheese katsu was SO GOOD! Chef apologized for the wait time because it took a long time to make. Even made up for it by sending over a yuzu panna cota for dessert! My cheese katsu was worth the wait, though. The cheese was not overpowering. Katsu was perfectly crisp. The sesame dipping sauce was so good. Every bite was perfection! I didn't get to try the hire katsu but according to my husband it was really good and he'd get it again. Omurice had a bit too much sauce but held up well the next day. So the yuzu panna cota was mind blowing. Like, I had no idea what to expect when I took that first bite. I transported to another world. It was refreshing, light, citrusy, and simply delightful. I would order that again, not to share. Lol! Safe to say we will be back! Excellent meal with excellent staff in a cute restaurant. It's not too big but does have a steady crowd. read more

Food and service were both great. The Ton Katsu was crunchy, juicy, and tender but a little pink. For those who worry about cooked-level, that may cause concern. But the meat was indeed cooked, came out piping hot. Salad was simple and fresh, miso soup was not overly salty, and rice was nice and fluffy. The Katsu sauce was not too sour not salty, very balanced. The restaurant was clean and bright. Not a lot of tables but there wasn't a wait at lunch time on a Sunday after Thanksgiving. read more

My fiancé and I came here for our date night and this place definitely did not disappoint. The place itself is pretty small but when you walk in you place your name on the waitlist. They have tables and bar area to sit at, as well as two tables outside. We decided to sit at the bar so we could also watch the chefs cook! I ordered the cheese katsu and my fiancé ordered the Hire Katsu and the omurice. Let me tell you, this was absolutely the best Katsu we have tried. The cheese katsu was sooooo delicious. It's a super thin pork katsu filled with ooey gooey melty cheese. The Hire Katsu was so tender and flavorful! Not tough at all and just melted in your mouth. I did not try the omurice but my fiancé said it was also very good! He definitely wants to try the curry rice next time too. Solid spot for Japanese-Korean food in Whittier. The menu is small but focused which I like. We got the Cheese Katsu meal, Omurice, and Egg Sando. The Katsu was cooked well, not too greasy, very flavorful. The Omurice was my fave, fluffy and the sauce was really good. Another highlight was the Yuzu Panna Cotta we got for dessert. It was citrusy, not too sweet, great texture, we really enjoyed it. Their Matcha Yuzu-ade was refreshing as well. Good service and a relaxed atmosphere. We've been here a few times now. Everything about this place does not disappoint. From their food, to their service and the vibes of this restaurant, we love it all and always look forward to going. Can't go wrong with any of the katsu meals. They come with a delicious cabbage salad, miso soup, and rice. If you go with a group, share the omurice-underneath that dome of omelette is a yummy fried rice served with a savory sauce. All portions are a good size, and with so many things to try, come hungry. Have been eyeing this place for a while but just didn't have the chance to swing by. Went on a Sunday for late lunch and place wasn't hard to find, there's ample parking. There's a waitlist to sign up as you enter. After 15 mins, we were called to the cashier to order. The menu is straightforward, and item selections just seem limited. Order in got seated after. It's a small place, but very clean. Food came within 15 mins. Here's what my boyfriend and I tried: 1. Omurice: just the right amount of seasoning on the sauce. Also added 1 ball katsu which reminded me of a giant meatball, stuffed, lightly breaded. Everything was divine! 2. Hire Katsu: another yum-worthy mention--very generous portion size, served with 2 kinds of Wasabi (regular paste and kizami) that tastes so fresh complimenting the katsu. Great combo! Not to mention the miso soup included. If you're thinking of just the familiar taste served in other restaurants you are wrong! This one was crafted to perfection, it has a spice to it, it's giving chef made. So delicious! That one has definitely caught my taste buds' attention by far. 3. Cheese Katsu: served with the same sides as the Hire Katsu, the cheese pull is on point with generous meat portion. Definitely enjoyed my first timer experience! Such a cute spot. I love a place with great counter seating. The restaurant was wonderfully lit, clean and organized. I appreciate so much having chefs cooking from scratch and making everything fresh to order. Of course I had to try everything that I couldn't choose between. That means I ordered way too much food again. I had the cheese cutlet and that was gooey and crunchy and lovely. The fried part is perfect golden brown and crunchy. They even place the slices on top of a raised tray so the bottom doesn't steam and make the cutlets soft or soggy. The shredded cabbage salad was so great! I loved shoving huge balls of finely shaved cabbage in my mouth! The texture is so gratifying! The Katsu sauce it came with was sweet. It almost tasted like there was apple sauce in it? Well, nonetheless it was yummy. Also got the balls. Those were ground pork and beef blend, I think, deep fried. That dish had its own sauce. This one was sweet too, but not as sweet as the katsu sauce. This sauce reminded me of tomato paste, or even ketchup as an ingredient. It was good. I had a side of curry, so I could taste that too. I only ordered a side of curry gravy. That was goooood. I was trying to figure out a spice that's in it. Was is clove? Star anise? Not cardamom ... gosh! I hate that I can't think of it. Anyway, it was tasty. I mixed the curry and tomato-ey sauce from the balls together and I liked my little concoction. The Yuzu Panna Cotta though!!! Oh wow. A-Maze-Ing! The yuzu marmalade was succulent. The panna cotta was light and creamy and dreamy. Oohhhh wow. Having the creamy panna cotta and yuzu marmalade together was luscious. read more
I had known about Lucky Pig for a few months, but due to it being a bit out of the way for me in Whittier, I haven't really had a chance to stop by. My friend and I had plans to go to Orange County, so we decided to stop here on the way. The restaurant is fairly small. Food is ordered at the counter, and the food is prepared fairly quickly. I ended up ordering the omurice, and my friend ordered the hire katsu. The omurice was really good. I loved the tomato sauce and also the fluffy omelette that is not too well done. It was super tasty. But by far my favorite dish was the hire katsu. I've had all sorts of tonkatsu places, even in Japan, but I've never had pork this juicy. The pork was incredibly juicy, melt-in-your-mouth. It was absolutely divine. I would come back again for the tonkatsu for sure. Possibly the best pork I've ever had. read more
