Growing up in Hong Kong , lamb wasn't something I ate very often. It wasn't until I moved to SoCal that I discovered all-lamb restaurants like M Joy. It's basically a dream come true for lamb lovers -- almost every meat dish on the menu is lamb! This popular halal restaurant specializes in Xinjiang-style lamb dishes. The lamb rib with rice was incredibly tender and practically fell off the bone. The grilled lamb shank and grilled lamb ribs are also must-orders if you love bold, flavorful dishes. Came for a casual Friday lunch with the family. Service was fast and easy with a very simple menu and the food was ready very quickly. There were only 3 main options: 1) lamb shank, 2) lamb ribs, and 3) lamb skewers. All halal and made with New Zealand lamb which was awesome! We tried all 3: one plate of the shank/ribs combination (which came with a bed of rice, pickled veggies, and a bowl of soup) and also one order of the lamb skewers which came with 3 skewers. Everything was excellent but the lamb shank was truly amazing and my favorite item - the meat was outrageously tender and just fell off the bone as I tried to take a piece - we had the shank just basic with no rub. The short ribs were a close second (we had these with the bbq rub and it was tremendous if you wanted more flavor). The skewers were decent - we had them plain because I didn't want anything too spicy but I would def recommend getting the rub for these if I were to get them again. The pickled veggies balanced the heavy meat and rice items perfectly to round out the meal. We also tried the jasmine yuzu tea drink and the homemade yoghurt which ended the meal nicely. I'm not a fan of lamb in general and generally avoid it at most restaurants, but I was loving every bite. First time here after a friend's recommendation, and wow--this place is basically a love letter to lamb. The menu is simple, straightforward, and very confident about it (as it should be). My mom ordered the lamb skewers, and let me tell you... this was the best lamb we've had since eating it in China 20 years ago. That's a bold statement, but the skewers earned it. Big portions, perfectly seasoned, and zero dryness. I went with the lamb shank plate, and the meat was fall-off-the-bone tender with absolutely none of that gamey smell people worry about. My favorite part? The rice. It soaked up all the lamb and carrot juices like it knew exactly what its job was. I could've eaten a whole bowl of just that. The textbook example of doing a few things really well. We tried the lamb ribs, lamb shank and grilled skewers - essentially the whole menu and it was simple and delicious and felt like a warm hug. The braised lamb cuts were fall off the bone tender and the skewers were a spicy/chewy contrast. The lamb is high quality and not gamey at all. We asked the cashier what was good for first timer, she recommended #3, rib and shank, both broiled and grilled. We also got extra grilled ribs because why not. The set came with rice with lamb fat, soup, fresh pickled veggies, hot oil and extra crushed seasoned hot peppers. For drinks, we got the salty milk tea to share, you can drink it hot or over ice. We recommend drink it hot, it was creamy, salty, and addicting. The dish size was pretty big. It was a bit pricy, but we were full from it. We really loved the grilled lamb. They were crispy outside and tender juicy inside. It wasn't even gamey, and one spoon of the hot oil and pepper dipped lamb, rice, and pickled veggies, a bite of heaven. Just got back from a trip to socal and of all the places I tried this one that really stands out. A small chill spot casually dishing out extremely delicious high-quality food and drinks across the board from their small menu. You order using a QR code at your table or a tablet for take-out orders and food comes out quickly. If you have any trouble or confusion at all the staff is very helpful! I grew up not liking lamb due to the gaminess but this place uses New Zealand game which they say is the only breed without natural gaminess. And after having all the lamb here I can attest to that! They recommend you get what seems like a braised(?) lamb that is exquisite, but I really like the grilled lamb too that comes with the cumin/cayenne chinese dry seasoning. The pickled veggies and rice are also delicious here, and highly recommend the salted milk tea as it's a unique delight! Even the yuzu jasmine tea and hokkaido milk tea are phenomenal. There are 2 main entrees you can choose from: lamb shank or lamb ribs. Each entrée is served on top of a bed of rice mixed with carrots. Small side dishes include pickled carrots, onions, and pickles as well as chili oil. You are also given a flavorful bowl of clear broth. Ordering was super easy with the QR code and service was quick and easy. Taste wise the lamb did not have a strong gamey flavor which usually overpowers the dish- a plus in my book- and good indication it was fresh. It was nicely braised with just the right amount of spices and tenderness. I would recommend the shank over the ribs as the latter was a tad bit for fatty. The lamb itself is tender, juicy and it tastes clean. It's definitely lamb, but not at all gamy. 100% would order again. Grilled Lamb Shank - Also delicious, my wife liked this one more than the lamb on the plate (I'm still on team main course). Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, with two deliciously fragrant powders to dip. One wad heavier on the fennel, the other was a bit sweeter, we asked for extra containers of both on the way out. Special Salty Milk Tea - As much as I loved everything else, this is the one that actually stole the show. I've had salty milk tea at Mongolian and Xin Jiang places before, but this is the first one I've had where everything together perfectly. Where some places it tastes like the salt was added as an afterthought, the salt feels like it's an integral part of the experience and if you don't have it you're wrong. It's full of flavor but somehow light, salty but so easy to drink, has the light taste of buttery goat milk but never becomes too much. do yourself a favor. Absolutely get this if you come. The stem version of lamb doesn't look appetizing, but as soon as you add their spicy powder, they are really juicy, so don't let the look fool you.
