After two visits here I thought I'd leave this wonderful little diner a review. We've enjoyed breakfast and I feel that the breakfast specials for the price cannot be beat. They are simple, hearty, and just plain good the way breakfast should be. There really isn't much more to say about this place but just go enjoy it folks. Decor is endearing. Love the things Mama Says on the wall. "This hand or that ." To start you are given a cornbread muffin or and a roll. The muffin was delicious. Just the right amount of crisp. On the other hand the roll was hard. I had a veggie omelet and added bacon with no cheese. The vegetables were cooked exactly how I like. The sweet onion and mushroom sparked my tastebuds. Very disappointed with the lack of respect at this establishment. I ordered through Yelp and drove up to collect my order. I called and gave my name and the young lady came out and said "the only order we have is for Trevor". I showed her my completed order on yelp and she said "I'll go back and check". I was waiting and decided to go inside and show my receipt on my bank transaction as well because she was sure it didn't come through. When I went inside she was counting money with a co-worker. I said "did you find my order? Because you're counting money right now and said you would come back to let me know". Her co-worker then proceeded to ask me what my order was and I saw my order receipt in her hand and said that's me. So I said "can I have my order please?" An older lady comes over to check the receipt before they would hand it to me and I said "can I see the receipt? Does it show anything?" And the older lady said "oh see it doesn't have your name." I said my user name is there but my phone number and order are right there so that doesn't matter. If you say you're going to go and check and come back then do that" and the older lady says "yeah you should really get that fixed" so I told her "no, I will not. What I want is for you to do what you say you're going to do and not come back in to count money when I'm waiting in my car" so she then says "I was on my way out there". I then took my bag, said thank you and walked out. This isn't the first time I've felt racially profiled at a restaurant by an "older lady" who worked there. I'm beyond disappointed and will go to Norma's from now on. I've sent a message for the company to call me when they have a chance. I'm a 40+ yr old public school teacher with an 18yr old at home who works 18.5hrs moonlighting at Starbucks. I don't need this kind of disrespect on the weekend and to be honest I don't get it during the week. If you have a problem apologizing then don't work in food service. I have been here twice before and it was just ok. However, today my parents wanted to go and it was terrible. First let me say the wait staff is very friendly. Now the food however... is another story. My whole meal was like nursing home food. I had the "Friday" special. Fried catfish, fries, yams, and macaroni and cheese. My plate was in front of me within 5 minutes. I was surprised that it didn't take long. Then I found out why. The catfish tasted as though it had been re-heated, it was rubbery. The Mac and cheese was extremely (like melt in your mouth) soggy, the yams had a thick cinnamon glaze (like on canned peaches) extremely processed. The fries were thick wedges that were hot and surprisingly the best part of the meal. I was extremely hungry, but couldn't stomach anything but the fries. I was extremely disappointed and saddened because it's a cute lil spot for mothers and daughters Hopefully the food improves, so that the amount of customers will too. read more

Their 3 egg omelet is great! Somehow the bacon is still crispy inside the omelet! Soooo tasty with salsa and white gravy! Side of really good salad with ranch! I'm so satisfied! Their chicken fried steak breakfast is good too! Chicken fried steak is always good all day so goo thing they do serve it ALL DAY! Service was super fast and friendly and efficient! I used to go here at the Plano location regularly for lunches to get the meat and 3 veggies. I went recently the same for dinner and was surprised to see they've reduced their portion sizes and ALSO raised their prices. I ordered the catfish dinner and received 1 piece of fish and the baked squash was smaller than usual with a small ice cream scoop-sized portion. The waitress said she would talk to the manager but she didn't offer another piece of fish and didn't come back even to refill my $2.50 iced tea. At checkout, I let them know that reducing portion size while raising prices is not going to work for customers and I would not be back. Maybe they are trying to survive by reducing portions and raising prices but I think that may close their doors even faster. The food was just fair and the value was not there. read more

Using her index finger to point at us, when we tried to tell her we were ready to order she put a finger up at us so she could finish her conversation with another server. The menu was a little confusing so when we were thinking that we got both sides she rudely said "or, or, or, or, or" while shaking her head like we were stupid. I admit I was a little skeptical due to reading reviews some positive and negative. Being from Louisiana we take soulfood or home cooked food on a whole other level. I moved to Texas two years ago and have tried numerous restaurants only to leave feeling disappointed. Today I have found my new favorite spot. I recommend to go on Sunday. I ordered the Chicken and dressing as my entree followed with Mac n cheese, black eyed peas, turnip greens as sides. Accompanied with fresh cornbread in which they give you the option to get or rolls or one of each. Everything was so immaculate that I stuffed myself with as much food that my stomach could bear. Unlike ALL the reviews I've written (good or bad) for other establishments, I actually received a response from the owner who wanted to know the DETAILS of our visit. We wrote back and forth a few times and in the end, she made good on our experience. We have since returned and had a much better experience. My wife got food poisoning from the meatloaf about 2 hours after eating there. When she called the restaurant (we didn't want others to get sick if it was the meatloaf) the manager said it takes 8 hours for symptoms of food poisoning to show up and that it was "not on them". According to federal health government website symptoms of food poisoning show within 2 hours. When we called her back to tell her this, she said "didn't I just talk to you 20 minutes ago" and then said "appreciate it, thanks" and hung up the phone. Was served scorched scrambled eggs, sent them back to be served raw scrambled eggs on the 2nd try, then sent those back and was give another plate of--you guessed it--scorched scrambled eggs, and on the 3rd and final round, the burnt eggs were cooked by and delivered to me by THE KITCHEN MANAGER. Come on, how hard are correctly made scrambled eggs??? I mean, YOU'RE A BREAKFAST DINER!!! Completely lost my appetite and didn't eat anything of the rest of the meal (bacon, French toast, etc). Had to ask for the waitress to comp the meal (should've been done of her own volition with a 3 time send back to the kitchen, not with me asking)...and she still charged for THE ENTIRE MEAL, including the cheese (that was cooked into the eggs I never ate), as well as the salsa, that was an accoutrement to the eggs that was also untouched. When approaching the register, we were referred back to the waitress to have the check straightened out, by a cashier who was haughty at best. AVOID PLANO!!! This is a good place to take dads who love diners and home cookin'...so my dad is a prime candidate. I had a groupon so even better! My dad and I went on a Sunday for lunch--he got the chicken fried steak and I got the meatloaf with an assortment of sides. The good: the service! Also the rolls, cornbread, hot chocolate, fried okra, mashed potatoes, apple cobbler. The meh: onion rings, mac n' cheese, green beans, cole slaw, turnip greens, meatloaf, and chicken fried steak. I had previously been to the Royal location and remember having a great meal, but this one was just ok. First visit to this new Plano location of the famous Mama's Daughter's Diner, having been a fan of the Royal Lane location for many years. This location rocks! The decor is fresh and fun, with "Mama Says..." sayings all around the walls. The breakfast was great, and as an added bonus, the ham with my ham-n-eggs was a fresh cut slice from an actual ham, not the perfect-oval-with-rind you see so often. Plus, they took the time to trim the fat from the ham. So yummy!! The best part of the experience by far was Joyce, our server. She was thoughtful enough to ask if I wanted butter on the toast, and was super friendly and attentive. I was hoping for cherry cobbler to take home, and although they didn't have it that day, she got me a list of the cobbler-by-the-day so I can plan ahead. Just bad horrible service all around. We came with the groupon they had a month or so ago for lunch--good service. So i returned one morning this week for breakfast. Wow what? Is this the same restaurant? I ordered the meal with two eggs, grits, 2 biscuits and cream gravy, and one pork chop (vs the two that was on the menu as the special). The waitress told me that they would take off $4 if i ordered only one porkchop so thats what i did. Food comes, tastes good. I eat, then walk up to pay and realize my check is wrong. They were trying to overcharge me. $4 wasnt taken off as told, only $2. And the waitress tried to argue that they DID take the money off. The cashier was huffing and puffing. And then finally used a calculator and calculated it out in which the check WAS charging me too much. I paid and the waitress said under her breath that i should have ordered off the menu. I would have but the waitress told me that i could order -that way- so i did. Not my fault. Not coming back. Dont like rude incompetence. read more

The infamous Mama's Daughters' Diner. I purchased a groupon and eventually headed over there. I gave it time so it wasn't as busy, good idea too because we came in right before dinner rush. Our server seemed busy a lot and pretty scatter brained.We kept it simple, a sandwich and 2 chicken fried chickens, one with sauce on the side. Well she brought one of our dinner sides out before any of our food came out. So we all snacked on cole slaw for about 20 minutes before we got any action. It was almost a teaser. Eventually we got our food but she forgot the sauce on the side. She never stayed at our table long enough to get her attention that we needed stuff. It seemed like everytime we did ask, she was getting more irritated. The food was cold when we got it too, so I don't know what was going on. Maybe next time if the server is better then our food will be better. Otherwise, I'd have to say that my experience wasn't that amazing! read more

Great for diner atmosphere! I came here with two kids in tow on a friday for lunch and it was crowded but I thought it added to the diner atmosphere. Coming from jersey, it's hard to find a true diner in this area. I thought the background noise was just right and you could tell people were happy eating or deep in good conversation. We were seated after about 5 min wait and waitress was very friendly and provided crayons and kid's menu. Can't go wrong with breakfast food served all day. Drinks came out fast and after we ordered, not much of a wait before the meal came out considering the place was packed. The party room on the side was also filled. I decided to try a lunch menu item (tuna sandwich with side of onion rings!) while the kids both ordered breakfast (scrambled eggs, biscuit, and 2 strips of bacon). Service was awesome. Normally you bring your check up front to pay on your way out but the waitress saw I was with 2 kids and offered to have it rung up for me. Super prompt about refilling drinks. So I didn't grow up with a mother that had a regular habit of serving Chicken Fried Steak, and canned vegetables were an unspoken taboo. And although I enjoy a big plate of greasy, disgusting food every once in a while, normally I go for things that are a little more on the healthy side. So one fateful Sunday morning, after a birthday party the night before in the 5th circle of suburbia, we found ourselves being ushered through the door of Mama's Daughter's Diner. I knew the experience was going to be odd the second we walked in - no fault of Mama's Diner, of course, but the group we were with certainly didn't do anything to help the situation. It seems as if we got there smack in the middle of the lunch rush. We only knew two of the seven people we were with...and three of them weren't eating, just sucking down soda like they were some sort of Dr. Pepper deprived camels (that's the ex-waitress in me getting extremely annoyed). Knowing that I was annoyed sitting at the table, I'm sure our waitress was annoyed too, and the poor thing was completely in the weeds. That being said, I was half-terrified for my life because under the I'm-annoyed-with-you facade, I was pretty sure she was about to pull an Uzi out of her apron and shoot the place up. I stopped asking for water refills after that. As far as the food goes, all in all it was pretty mediocre...and this is coming from a hungover, grease-craving beast. But, there were a few high points for sure. The cornbread muffins and biscuits were ridiculously good. It's rare that you find cornbread that isn't dry, even at fancy restaurants. This may be some of the lightest, fluffiest cornbread I've ever had in my life. The hash browns were fine, I asked for them extra crispy and they weren't, but I kept my mouth shut for fear of butter knife stab wounds from our waitress, who at this point is pretty blatantly holding things together by a thread. The eggs were eggs, the biscuits were yum but the gravy was a bit floury for my taste in particular. The sausage patties were shriveled and dry and I only took one bite before deciding they weren't worth the calories and that I probably wanted another biscuit anyway. Just as a note, the bf had the breakfast that included a Chicken Fried Steak (aka heart attack on a plate) and he said it was really good. But anyway, stopped in for a great tasting, cheap dinner and both of those needs were met! The server was nice, the decor is great, and the patty melt was delicious!! It's basically like every other diner, but the theme (in case this isn't obvious for you) is things like your mama used to say. (NOT yo mama jokes, by the way). So it's kind of cute in that sense. Nothing about the diner really stands out or makes itself unique other than the name/decor. BUT, the food is good. Half off Groupon? What a wonderful reason to try a new place! And a diner with homestyle cooking sounds like it will satisfy. By the look of things, it seems like the Plano location is one of the latest in an expanding chain of the metroplex. Upon entering, I found myself in the kitschiest '50s inspired diner that I've ever seen, swathed in a lot of red and white and the stereotypical oldie style booths and checkered tile. We were greeted and seated immediately by a friendly young hostess. Our waitress appeared with equal quickness, providing a cheerily quirky personality and eager to offer small talk and opinions outside of the standard template any and every waiter can fall back on. When I asked her straight up what she liked on the menu, she went above and beyond to detail a few different dishes and why she liked them so much. She even gave me a head's up about certain items that might not appeal to my specific tastes. Every day seems to provide a generous selection for the daily special at a flat rate. I ended up going with one of said specials, which involved braised beef tips in gravy over rice and three sides of my choice - fruit cocktail, sweet corn, mashed potatoes, and large lima beans (I don't know where the extra came from, but hey, I'm not going to complain!). While waiting for the food, we were served homemade cornbread and dinner rolls, which were tasty. I especially appreciated my condiment options, which included the typical single serving butter, honey, and jam of both the grape and strawberry persuasions. Tasty. As far as my entree was concerned, the food was good and filling. I can't say that it was over the top fantastic, or something new and improved on a dish I've had before, but it was straight up good. Considering the old school, dive-y diner theme, I was expecting a few things to come out of cans or what have you, just like when Mama takes shortcuts to get Thanksgiving dinner on the table. Considering I got exactly what I was expecting, it was good and satisfying. Homestyle, after all, doesn't necessarily evoke images of chef-level cooking or artisan inspired cuisine. I think of artery-clogging gravy made in a chipped pan and supplemented with a can of Dinty Moore from the pantry. The finished the meal off splitting a piece of chocolate pie, which was rich and sweet and super tasty despite the crust being a little tough for our forks. The options are pretty expansive, and spot on in terms of fulfilling the old style diner theme (which some people seem to forget the meaning of these days). And overall the place is CHEAP. My friend and I tried to get a $20 tab for our Groupon, and still ended up under after two huge entrees and a slice of pie for dessert. And for those of you who like breakfast all day, that menu seemed pretty nice and cheap. Next time I'm on that side of town, I'm definitely going to go for one of their breakfast options (I'm craving big fluffy waffles already!). I would recommend the fans of kitsch and dives try this place out, as long as they know what they are getting into when the terms "kitsch" and "dive" are involved. Bloody addicting! Only wish it was a late night diner as it closes at 9pm most days. And breakfast is available all day. The chicken fried chicken - ridiculously good. I've only had chicken fried chicken/steak? - once - at Dennys and never again. I asked the waitress for her recommendation - and I can't stop ordering it. So I'm not sure what else is good. I've never had a biscuit like that in well ... never. They give you two. You can't finish two - but it's so flaky, buttery. Haha I let it sit on a napkin. Oh there's butter in that thing! Loved the buttered carrots. And the chocolate cake - I scraped off the topping and strawberry filling in the middle, too sweet. The cake itself was just amazing. The woman that answered seemed perplexed by my question and after a little back and forth she assured me it wasn't busy. When I arrived ten minutes later, I found out that they in fact were busy, and we had to wait to be seated. The service was friendly but slow. The menu is Country Comfort not Soul Food and when we finally did receive our meals they were cold and underwhelming. Too many better options nearby. Don't bother with this place. read more

We were shopping at Willow Bend, so we stopped in for dinner. The restaurant was very crowded at about 7 pm, but we were seated right away. After waiting 10 minutes for a waitress to come take our order, she only took our drink order and said she'd be back for our good order. We waited another 8 minutes for an iced tea and decaf coffee, and she finally took our order. We then waited another 35 minutes for our food to come, and the order was wrong. She did not communicate with us at any time during the 35 minutes to tell us the order was delayed or that it was coming soon. I ordered a grilled chicken breast & three vegetables, red beans, green beans and fried okra. My companion ordered chicken fried chicken and three vegetables, a green salad that should have come first but did not, green beans and corn. The chicken breasts came out fine, but she brought us green beans, okra, no salad, no corn and baked beans instead of red beans that looked like they just came out of a can. No apologies from her at all. When my companion asked about his salad, she said she was going to bring it right away, but made him feel badly for even asking. We promptly paid at the register for our drinks and told the cashier about the problems. She could have cared less. Needless to say, we will NOT ever come back to this location and, instead, go to the location on Martin Luther KIng. Terrible service, an uncaring attitude and lack of respect for their customers. We went on a Wednesday afternoon and the place was dead. This had me a little worried. To it's credit, the place is fairly new and I don't think many people are too hip to the place. I was craving a burger days after I was reading people's twitter about burgers. So I decided to order one up here. The boyfriend had the chicken fried chicken per the waiter's suggestion. I was pleasantly surprised that the burger was not greasy - at all. It was great, not to mention a nice thick cut of burger. The chicken fried chicken was also a nice comforting dish that was not soaked in the cream gravy - it was fantastic. What did bother me was the service. Goodness, I think there were about 5-6 guys just standing around and we waited a good 10 mins before someone did come and take our order. That really soured me.
