Tried for the first time since noticing it a few months ago! Wait staff was very friendly and personable. The pasta was good and hit the spot, not like mind blowing but good for the price. However, our surprise favorite was the pasta pie, which we ordered as kind of a "why not!" And ended up being the best. I never see this place packed, which I'm confused by, as I've been to terrible packed Italian restaurants and much prefer Mattina. Came for their prix fixed menu and it was great! Wasn't very busy although it was a Tuesday early evening and we had reservations. We got a choice of bruschetta. My most favorite was the pickled strawberry and now I want to learn how to make that. The main dish was the crispy cod and that was very good. My friend got the bucatini pasta which was nice and fresh. Lastly we got a dessert which was some sort of strawberry Panna cotta and was so creamy and delicious. Great place for creative pasta. We got the Rotelle and the Mezzelune. The Rotelle was a nice, little bit sour duck pasta with a white wine sauce. I really enjoyed it and was quite savory. It reminded me of a chicken wine soup in Chinese cuisines. The rotelle pasta choice is a bit odd though. The Mezzelune is a more sweet dish. The sweet potato part was great and the grapes are also delicious but wasn't the biggest fan of the sauce. All in all, the place is very nicely decorated. We got sat at the bar and got to watch the cooks do their thing and they were definitely very meticulous and attentive. The staff were also very helpful and nice. I like the decor a lot, except the placemats. Maybe it was their lunch setting. Idk. But the woven plastic placemats cheapened the vibe? It was giving first college apartment. Weird next to their Design Within Reach chairs. The placemats also kept sliding around. Service - they felt understaffed in the kitchen and on the floor. There was one waiter that we saw at noon on Sunday. There were many open tables (85% open tables?) but he told us that there were a lot of reservations. We convinced him to allow us to add one more table for our party of three instead of three sharing a table for two. He finally acquiesced on our third inquiry when the reserving parties didn't seem to materialize before our food came (nor after - not all, still at least 60% free tables). Oh, they also brought the wrong beer but already opened it. The beer was pretty good though. Light order since we had a late breakfast and planned to get donuts from Johnny's after around the block: - asparagus and smoked egg. I thought this was not bad, well prepared but a pretty skimpy dish. - pasta pie. This was actually really good despite my guilt over carb on carb. Would get again based on taste but really they should call this slice of pasta pie to be clear that it's not an enclosed pie like chicken pot pie. - mushroom tagliatelle. This took like 30 minutes to come after the first two items. Mushrooms were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Pasta was al dente but needed more salt. Sauce packed mushroom flavor but also needed salt and also it was oddly kinda more liquid than sauce. I can't complain too much because I'd still order it again even though it could be improved. All in all, some decent dishes but I don't think I'd revisit for lunch. Perhaps it is a better spot for dinner. read more

We recently came by to try their pastries and coffee only. He got the maple pecan banana cookie, soft, very bread-like but he liked it. The curry chicken biscuit was buttery, slightly hard, and I thought the chicken curry was just okay. The espresso with vanilla cream was good and strong. Also love the slightly sweet vanilla cream on top to offset the bitter espresso taste. We sat inside overlooking the outdoors area. Service not memorable. I stopped by for lunch by myself and got 1 pasta dish and nothing else and the final check with everything included turned out to be $37... The portion was honestly a little small. Grilled over charcoal, and sandwiching Pt Reyes Toma cheese and Italian prosciutto - it was a fluffy, crumbly, buttery, salty, savory delight. Waiting awhile to be seated despite open tables. Finally cleaned off our table and set everything on the table next to it where it stayed for the entire dinner. Host basically flicked the menus at us. Took over 5 minutes for waitress to come to the table. Only 2 of the 3 appetizers we ordered ended up coming. No one came around to refill waters a single time during dinner. No one took a drink order following the first round. Waitress had less personality than a wet towel. Tonight I discovered this restaurant a block from Fillmore. What surprised me was that it was 90% women dining with three men only. We chose our appetizer because it was different (essentially cabbage on a crepe with truffles and feta) but $19 later I never found the truffle taste and I wasn't impressed. Good but basic in my opinion. The salad was yummy.. but it's a salad and would be hard to miss. I could have made it at home. The Tagliatelle was such a disappointment. Good pasta but.. maybe 7/10 because supposedly, again, there were truffles involved however the truufle oil or butter or truffles just never made it to the plate. $29 later.. totally dissapointed. I could have made this at home. Trout: pretty good. Chocolate dessert : phenomenal 10/10 Non alcoholic Drinks: basic in taste and $16-17 each. Ridiculously overpriced. Seating: if you are on a chair, (as opposed to cushion) it's really not comfortable. Noise level: TERRIBLE ! Overall, I am glad to have tried it but I won't be returning. I came to Mattina on my last day to use some Resy credit being that it was very easy to make a reservation and I can unfortunately see why that was the case. This place was a flop in my book... The milk bread bun was a low quality piece of bread and I found it odd that there were two different spreads on either halves of the bread. We also got the crispelle and it was luke warm when it was served to us and the edges were burnt to a crisp (the flavor was also lacking). We got the tagliatelle as one of the mains and it was just not good - the sauce was separating and the mushrooms were super dried out as if they were cooked a while ago and just left out to dry until someone ordered them. We were super excited for the carmelle as we saw it on a few other tables but that was just as disappointing as everything else. The service was also super slow, I think they only had 2 total people on the wait staff. This place is in such a great location - they have a lotttt to improve on but I hope they do! read more

Summary: Tasty coffee and excellent biscuits Details: Being our third lunch stop of the day, we didn't exactly have room for any more real food, and opted to keep it simple with a coffee and one of their butter and jam biscuits, both of which ended up being unexpected winners. The coffee itself stood out more for their beans than the craftsmanship itself, the latter of which I found a bit lacking (I mean, look at that latte art), but the former was quite excellent, with them using St Frank's beans. The real winner here though were the biscuits, which I wasn't expecting much out of when they first set them down, given it looked both dry and burnt. To our surprise though, it was one of, if not the most, buttery, crumbly, and moist biscuits I've had in the Bay area, possibly rivaling my favorites even up in Seattle proper. I came here for dinner with a friend and was impressed by how they can transition from their daytime cafe to nice dinner spot. I liked how the menu included pastas I'd never tried before. The canederli was super unique - I actually enjoyed the chewy texture and flavor of the bread dumplings a lot. The arancini was a solid appetizer to precede our pastas and came with a really tasty sauce. I'd say the food is just ever so slightly overpriced for what you get. This probably wouldn't be my first choice for Italian in the area, but it's still a decent neighborhood restaurant to enjoy some good food. read more

Do you have a friend where you know dinner is going to be a feast? At the end of the night, you've eaten so much that one more mint will make you explode. For most people, I am that friend. I had dinner with a great friend and colleague here. I was really excited since both of us can put away a lot of food. It's a really solid Cal-Italian experience. We shared the beef meatballs, cherry tomato salad, stuffed eggplant (eggplant stuffed with eggplant), summer squash, tagliatelle, mafaladine, 16 oz beef rib eye and the choc-oat gelato and cherry coppetta. That beef rib-eye was definitely the highlight of the meal but both of the pastas were also fabulous. I have a slight preference for the tagliatelle though my friend liked the mafaladine more. Service was excellent and the restaurant space is cavernous. With tax and tip, this ended up being $170 per person - this could have easily fed four people (about $85 per person). I am admittedly a harder grader when it comes to Italian food in SF given all the great options but this is definitely a good option when you are in this part of town. read more

Lovely meal. Tasty food, attentive, knowledgeable, staff, subdued, comfortable ambiance and feel. Meat skewers are great. All salads looked wonderful, but we settled for little gems and radishes. Same with pasta, their specialty; we tried a creamy fish based and a pork sugo. Sausage stuffed quail was delicious-- a dish not typically done at home. I rarely write reviews unless an experience is particularly memorable--unfortunately, this one was for all the wrong reasons. This was among the most disappointing dining experiences I've had in San Francisco. To start on a positive note, we were seated promptly upon arrival for our reservation. However, shortly after sitting down, we were given a bottle of sparkling water that we neither ordered nor requested. While we were able to return it without issue, things began to deteriorate quickly after that. We opted for the $45 prix fixe menu and began with the mushroom bruschetta. My dining companion received a slightly less charred slice of toast, but mine was completely burnt--so much so that all I could taste was char. When I brought this to our server's attention, her response was dismissive and unprofessional. She insisted that the burnt flavor was intentional and that any replacement would be the same. She reluctantly offered to bring another if I insisted, but her attitude made it clear she found the request unreasonable. Ultimately, she never brought the replacement and instead appeared to discuss the situation with coworkers in a way that was visibly annoyed and unprofessional. A man I believe was the manager did attempt to make amends by offering us a small pour of the wine we had been drinking. While the gesture was appreciated, we were planning to switch to red wine and still had nearly full glasses of white, so it didn't do much to improve the situation. The second course--a truffle pasta and a fried cod dish--was similarly underwhelming. The pasta lacked seasoning and any noticeable truffle flavor. The cod had an odd smell, and the accompanying vegetables were heavily marinated in vinegar to the point of being inedible. At this stage, I didn't feel comfortable asking for salt or pepper due to the earlier interaction with our server. Dessert was a cheesecake-like slice of cake that neither of us enjoyed or finished. While the food was lackluster, it was the service that truly soured the evening. I left feeling unwelcome and frustrated. For the same price point, I highly recommend Mr. Pollo--they have a 4 course tasting menu for 45$ as well and there you'll not only enjoy better food, but also warm, attentive service without the attitude. read more

Came initially for the breakfast sandos, but stayed for the rest. I came in a Sunday around 10 and pretty much no line and lots of outdoor seating. They don't serve the main menu until 11. We got the prosciutto & cheese biscuit ($11.50) and added an egg (+ $2) as well as the ricotta and hazelnut honey bruschetta ($9). The biscuits were a good portion size, although wished it was slightly fluffier but otherwise good. I also felt like it needed something sweet or like a hot honey to balance all the saltiness from the prosciutto. I'm glad with hot the bruschetta because it helped to balance the saltiness. Came back for dinner another day and ordered several things to share! Cornmeal Crespelle ($19)-Crepe like and a bit softer than we expected, but I personally enjoyed it. Bruchetta ($9)- the toma cheese & pickled peppers. My friend really liked this one, but I think I liked the one from the morning better. We also shared the ravioli ($28)- which was fine, but we felt like could have had more filling and smaller pieces. The tagiatelle ($28) with mushroom and truffle, was really really good. Both of our favorites. Overall, both experiences were good! I like the casual atmosphere for brunch, but also a good catch up spot or date for dinner. read more

This was a visit at the soft opening of the new all day Cal-Italian cafe from the Chef of SPQR. Another guest suggested that there is only one good bakery in each neighborhood, as we looked across at Fillmore Bakeshop, a great bakery. He said I wasn't loyal to one bakery since I visit various bakeries. Mattina, welcome to the neighborhood! There is definitely room for as many good bakeries as possible in each neighborhood. The more pastries the better! This is a lovely, airy space, with a few seats outside, tables near the entrance and a banquette on the right. I was warmly greeted by the counterperson, who explained the different pastry options. I had seen photos of the biscuit on Instagram, and chose it without prosciutto, as a vegetarian. With egg and cheese, it is a great light lunch. The biscuit is well baked, and very good. I also tried the black garlic and cheddar scone, and miso butterscotch cookie. The scone is perfectly balanced in flavor; the cookie, sweet and savory, is outstanding. I look forward to the expanded menu which will be coming soon. However, one person in my party suffered severe food poisoning from the Pappardelle she ordered. The rest of our party did not have the Pappardelle and were fine. My husband and I went on a Saturday morning around 9 o'clock! The restaurant has a small area to have breakfast, so it's not easy to find a spot but we were lucky! We ordered the biscuit with jam to split and 2 coffees. The biscuit is big enough for 2 people if you already have breakfast at home like us. It was good and I liked the contrast between the salt on the top and the sweet of the jam; maybe it was enough just the half because the contrast was strong. I've gone here 3 times to try and figure out if it's good or not, and after my last visit, I can confidently say this restaurant is not for me. Visit #1 happened shortly after they opened when I decided to try a prosciutto biscuit sandwich for breakfast - the biscuit was incredibly dry and the whole thing lacked any cohesive flavor. I decided this may have been a new-restaurant fluke. Visit #2 was about 6-9 months ago when I stopped in for dinner with some friends. We ordered some very classic pastas - bucatini and tagliatelle. Both were pretty good. We also ordered the cannellini beans, which lacked any sort of flavor to the point that our table asked for salt... I found this visit to be somewhat redeemable from my first, and was willing to go back and try it again. Visit #3 was last week when my partner and I decided to go out to celebrate a promotion. The pasta was most disappointing during this visit. We first ordered the pappardelle. The pasta itself came out incredibly overcooked - the noodles were almost mushy. In addition, whatever ricotta salata was on top tasted just like goat cheese, which is super odd. I really like ricotta and really hate goat cheese so this really ruined the dish for me. The second pasta we got was one of their specials - a braised chicken pasta. This time the pasta itself was so undercooked we had to use a knife to get it into pieces. This dish also came with the ricotta salata that tasted like goat cheese so that was another negative. Finally, my partner pulled multiple small bones (aka choking hazards) out of the chicken in the pasta. This final visit made my decision for me - especially as a proud Italian whose grandma cooks family recipes and homemade pasta regularly - this restaurant doesn't get the basics right, and they're too expensive to be doing it wrong - especially in a neighborhood with other better Italian options.
