I'm a Philly guy and I'm a fan. Not quite as greasy (aka good) as the ones in Philly ... but of the SF places I've visited, thus far Metro has the best cheesesteaks. Btw - they don't use whiz. Better than Jake's or the Cheesesteak shop on Divisadero in my opinion. Give it a try. Tater tots are a must. Reasonable prices, good selection, and quick made-to-order meals. We had the mushroom and cheese burger and the cheese steak sandwich. Prices were reasonable and the portion were good sized. Both items had good flavor. We would have preferred that the steak on the sandwich not be so finely minced - strips of steak would have added more texture. read more

The cheese steaks are delicious! I've lived in Lower Haight for a little over a month, and probably been here 10 times.

This place makes the best cheesesteaks (that I've found) in San Francisco. (Sorry cheesesteak shop, you've lost your touch.) Soggy burgers (on the two occasions we've tried them) and mushy fries. Very friendly guys and quick service, but 'meh' food.

Oh, Metro Cafe....I long to marry your crunchy, perfectly deep-fried tater-tots with my tongue. Your perfectly toasted sub-roll is the perfect complement to your cheesy, melt-in-your-mouth, perfectly sauteed onion and pepper meaty goodness. Not even the river of root beer I pour down my gullet after you can wash away the party in my mouth. You are a religious experience of which I long to partake on a daily basis. Too bad my hiatal hernia grabs my arm on my way out the door and persuades me to frequent your meaty, cheesy doorstep only once a month. I love you. read more

Metro is fantastic. The Philly Cheesesteak and chicken cheesesteak are to die for. Both sweet and spicy peppers to enjoy. If you're a sandwich/meat lover they are a must try if you're in the neighborhood. Maybe it's what I ordered (bacon philly, no onions or hot peppers) they left out my sweet peppers... But it was kind of small and really dry and bland. The Tots were great, but I could make them in an oven at home the same way. The Cheesesteak Shop chain in the East Bay is my favorite, this cost more and didn't come close in taste. read more

If you're looking for a good Cheesesteak spot in the city this is the place. They use good fresh quality meat in their cheesesteaks and hamburgers. I usually choose between the Metro Cheesesteak and the mushroom Cheesesteak. Never have I ever been skimped on meat on my sandwiches unlike other places. Their large size cheese steaks can definitely be split. It easily filled my kids stomachs along with some fries. And they are definitely fairly priced. This is now my Favorite place to grub on Haight St.(well close enough) I like the Bacon Cheese steak. I love the fact that they serve TOTS, and they now take cards($10 min. i think). I love watching football and heading here during halftime to get some grub. I highly recommend grabbing the large tots if you are watching games/drinking in lower Haigh because your friends will eat them all. read more

Great cheesesteak!!! I've never been to Phillie but I think these guys could duke it out with the best of them. Nice friendly service and good hot and fresh food. My wife had their mushroom and bacon burger and that was great too! In a city this big its easy to have a bad sandwich anywhere, so remember Metro Caffe when you are cruising through the Lower Haight. Oh yeah, their TOTS are to die for.(mustard no ketchup!) Really small space so it might be worth phoning ahead or walking over to Duboce park to eat if you have more than 5 people. Cheers. read more

Best cheesesteak I've ever had. And I've been to Philly and had supposedly the best Philly had to offer. I had the Hogi sandwich with the yummy peppers and fries (for only a buck extra which was reasonable). It was all made to order the cheese inundated the wich all over it and it was tangy, fresh and the fries were hot. The owner was cool as hell (Omar) and he was working not only the register but slangin' fries as well. It's a small enough place that you're sitting super close to the kitchen and register to see what's-a-cookin'. I'm glad Memphis Minnie's was closed today so I could discover this rad joint. Best. Cheesesteak. In. The. City!!! I've been coming here for the cheesesteaks for about five years now and I've never been disappointed. It's always cooked fresh and always tastes great. I love how the steak and peppers are chopped up really fine. At some places you've got big strips of steak, and when you take a bite the meat can be gristley and you end up pulling the steak out of the bun! Not here! Everything is cooked up and packaged neatly in the soft roll. I also would recommend the cheese fries. How can you go wrong dumping nacho cheese on fries? Lastly, throw Tapatio on everything - it's the perfect accent. read more

We ordered burgers, cheesesteaks and fries to be delivered near Alamo Square after touring Napa all day and didnt feel like going out. It takes as long as they tell you it will but it is worth the wait. The burgers and cheesesteaks were delicious and the fries showed up crispy which is almost unheard of when you get them delivery. Metro Caffe is a small joint perfect for satisfying an empty stomach. Their cheesesteaks are toasty on the outside and melty/gooey goodness on the inside. Be prepared to slip into a food coma when you dine here. Additionally, they have tater tots! With optional chili cheese on top? These are a must-try as the crispy tater tots are the perfect vehicle for the savoury chili. read more

I love burgers, but what i love the most is cheesesteaks. the slimy meat goodness slides down my throat like so many lubed mini-cows. don't you ever wonder why the crap go for all those vegetables when you can just have meat and cheese and onions and perhaps peppers. lettuce and tomato are no good. also, i suggest going for the tater tots because they're more fun and more delicious. nice dudes and outside seating makes for a relaxed environment. take your dog if you want. i would if i had one. probably not suitable for cats. read more
