Not a good experience tonight. We arrived about 7:10 to get the Friday night fish fry. The place was busy and very noisy. It also really needed busing! We were sat immediately. A young waiter came up and as we knew what we wanted we ordered- two fish dinners with salads. Water with lemon with both. The waters came quickly but the lemons were very bruised. Salads showed up right behind. Before we even took the first bite the dinners were brought out instead of being appropriately staged. We were at a very small table and there wasn't enough room on the tabletop to put the dishes comfortably with the other stuff like a large condiment holder but we made do. We opted to start with the entrees which were fine if overly salty. The waiter dropped the bill off when we were a couple of bites in without comment. My wife finally caught the waiters eye and asked that the water be refilled. He did hers but not mine? We tried the salads but both decided to just leave them. We paid and left. Every Thursday morning, my husband and I come here for breakfast. When the weather is good, we like to eat outside. We have a favorite waitress Barbi, who is fabulous. As soon as we sit down, she has our drinks waiting for us. My husband usually gets a ham & cheese omelette, and Barbie just looks at him and goes, yada, yada, which is grits with cheese and grilled raisin toast with butter. I'm all over the place with food. This week I ordered sunny side up eggs, cheese grits and a biscuit and it was outstanding. We love our Thursday breakfasts! read more

Metro is a classic Jax staple. It's Diner food, it's very popular in Jax and they have 3 locations ( I think) they are all busy, especially for breakfast. I do like Metro, I have had dishes here that were great!!! But then I have had dishes that were a complete miss! So it depends on what you order. The good stuff: pretty much all their breakfast items ( chicken and waffles, huevo rancheros, classic eggs ect), their burger, the phillycheese steak The bad stuff: unfortunately I have found every time I order off their "Specials" I end up not liking it, maybe these are "trying it out" recipes but I always regret getting it Stick with their regular menu and you should be good read more

We dined here on a Monday afternoon, and we're seated quickly, and given our choice of breakfast or dinner menus. We chose both. My husband ordered pancakes, and sausage. I ordered grilled three cheese with tomatoes, and a house salad. The food arrived at our table on time, and hot. The grilled cheese was just perfect. Crispy crunchy thick bread grilled to perfection and the cheeses were gooey and tasty. My husbands pancakes were a fluffy, and delicious. He ordered them with chocolate chips. They looked so good! I noticed that the elderly gentleman sitting by hisself close to us was probably a regular as he shared happy conversations with several wait staff. Metro Diner is always consistently good, food is fresh and flavorful, servers are friendly and attentive. Love the fact that they serve breakfast all day, as they are known for their breakfast menu. Favorite is the chicken and waffles. Ordered a grilled chicken sandwich which is not listed on the menu but they accommodated my request, as they serve chicken fingers fried, grilled or blackened. I have been going to the metro dinner for years. The variety and the quality of the food are excellent. All of their staff will meet or exceed your expectations most of the time. Very nice to see them expanding within 14 states. Go once and you will be hooked. That being said, it is disappointing to see that my regular location, in Mandarin Florida, needs to improve upon maintaining the exterior of its property. This includes the outside seating area where food is served. I wish I was able to say that the conditions were recent but they have been accumulating over a long period of time. No one wants a filthy ceiling fan rotating above their food. The building and awnings should be cleaned on a regular basis. The sign that displays their name and also acts as their logo should not be pealing away. This company has a great customer base and is always busy. It should be able to afford simple regular exterior building maintenance. Don't just take pride in your food and service, start to care for the structure that you invite your guests to visit and where they provide their patronage. read more

Our waitress Catherine's extremely nice! She's a true example of southern hospitality!! Here, I ordered the chicken pot pie as a brunch (and orange juice as a drink).The pancakes that my aunt shared with me were really buttery and delicious! Catherine would stop by every 10 minutes to make sure that we were having an excellent dining experience and absolutely nobody at my table was disappointed with anything at all. This is not the case, almost everything we ordered was not what we expected, the soup was cold, the ham in the club sandwich tasted old, and the bread for the burger was so crumbly that I had to eat it with a fork and knife. I love Metro Diner and it is always my first choice for breakfast. Their hash browns are the best! Their crispy on the outside and steamy and fluffy on the inside. The ham slice has gotten considerably thinner. I would prefer the toast to arrive buttered. In most instances they bring the butter after they deliver your meal. By the time it's dropped off the toast is no longer hot. By the time I open the pads of butter and start eating my ham and eggs are not longer hot. Yesterday my toast was forgotten. After finally flagging down the hostess she informed our server. Within a few moments he delivered my toast which only one side was slightly toasted and the other side was not toasted at all! If our server would of checked on us within a minute after delivering our food to be sure everything was satisfactory he would have realized the toast was missing. Instead of admitting he forgot it he gave me half done toast. Lastly...I know hot tea drinkers are in the minority of breakfast beverage drinkers. I am a tea drinker in a coffee drinking world! But, please offer plain black tea! The regular tea drinkers don't want herbal tea, they don't want Earl Grey! We don't care about the selection box! Give us Lipton, Tetley, Red Rose or a restaurant brand. They usually have English breakfast which is a black tea. You wouldn't run out of regular coffee, don't run out of regular tea! Either get yourself on the online waitlist or be prepared to wait longer by showing up and having them add your name then. Recently had another Golden Retiree Lunch adventure. While planning, my Momma Sista left it up to me to locate a lunch venue offering "fish and chips". Brain flash, Metro Diner at her local location. We enjoyed the Friday fish selections having great conversations. I would have appreciated a friendly table visit from a managerial representative to impress my guest. Impressions are welcoming tools often shared with others down the road. We are now returning to restaurants with elevated menu prices. We love Metro Diner! We were out for a motorcycle ride and picked this diner so we could continue on to Green Cove and beyond. Theres a small private parking lot but plenty of overflow in the adjacent strip center lot. Routine check in w the hostess stand to get your name on the list then grab a seat on the bench w a complimentary cup of coffee. Our wait was short and we were comfortably seated and given menus. We ordered a Frisco Breakfast Sandwich. Grilled ham, cheddar cheese and fluffy scrambled eggs on buttery grilled sourdough. Pretty tasty! I also ordered a cup of fruit which was a tasty blend of freshly prepared strawberries, pineapple, melon and grapes. Superb! Service is always top notch, the food is consistently well prepared and tasty and our waitress was super friendly and attentive. Thats why we love Metro! read more

One of the best restaurants in town, maybe anywhere... Huevos Rancheros, I have been coming here 9 years, this is my first time with this order. My recommendation, add blackened chicken and extra fried jalapenos. NOTE: I do not prefer spicy food the flavor added by the fried jalapenos and blackened chicken is fantastic! Now I can only speak about the fried chicken and waffles here, as it's the only reason I come here. With that said, the waffles are perfect, (plus strawberry butter? Pretty genius) the fried chicken is juicy, crispy, and pairs as well as you'd think with waffles. Personally not a fan of the spicy maple syrup option, not because it's spicy but the hot sauce flavor doesn't suit the syrup for me. But the regular maple syrup with the fried chicken was the winner; the ultimate sweet and salty combo. Basically this is a brunch paradise but it has a tendency to always be packed so if you don't get lucky then be prepared for a wait. read more

Relaxed and casual atmosphere with amazingly well trained staff (who's courteous, friendly, attentive without hovering, come back and let us know what we ordered is coming) combined with good food is a winning recipe. The gumbo soup was a different texture than I was expecting or used to. I didnt find any okra in it either. My favorite item has to be the fish wrap, it was moist fresh delicious and seem to be a great healthy choice so you can devour the waffle with the strawberry whipped butter with less guilt :) Love coming here during lunch time where you can order from both the breakfast menu AND the lunch menu. Hands down the best breakfast my son and I have ever had!!! HOLY FLUFFY MELT IN YOUR MOUTH FRIED CHICKEN AND WAFFLES! I don't want to brag but we are fried chicken connoisseurs and in Jacksonville you won't find crispier, juicier, tastier, brined fried chicken than at Metro Diner. The waffles are so light, airy and crispy they actually melt in your mouth. The strawberry butter is scrumptious and made with fresh strawberries. That's my son eating the strawberry butter. Finally, Phillip our server made a delicious breakfast all the more fantastic. Hands down the most friendly, attentive and knowledgeable server I've ever had. My order was taken right away by a dedicated server and only had to wait about 20 minutes. The food here is always great and the service efficient and friendly. Came here for Father's Day dinner - surprisingly the place was relatively empty. Our waitress was attentive, friendly and very good. Food was excellent and there wasn't anything to bring home. I have eaten at Metro Diner on San Jose Blvd for years. It is always consistently good food whether you order breakfast, lunch or dinner! I always have a hard time choosing. The service is great as well. I cant say enough good things about Scott, the manager! We recently had a family funeral and since it was on a Saturday, we knew that it would be difficult to find a restaurant to accommodate 17 people. Scott was very accommodating! He reserved the little "back room" for us even though the restaurant was busy. He gave us his BEST server. She was able to take everyone's order and get all of us served in a very timely manner. Scott came and spoke to us and offered his condolences. I was VERY impressed! I will be a forever customer! read more

I've been to this particular Metro location many times. It's possibly the busiest-and best Metro in Jax! I can't tell you how often my boyfriend and I have wanted to go for Saturday or Sunday breakfast, but didn't want to wait in the line wrapped around the building and in some cases, spilled out into the parking lot. Today the brunch gods were smiling down and graciously allowed us to dine at Metro with no wait! I've found the key at Metro is to check the blackboard for specials. A couple years ago, I had a fabulous rib eye country fried steak there. It wasn't on the menu or the board today, so I asked our server about it. Yes, indeed, she said they could do that for me!! Although the steak was a tad chewy here and there, it was still better than Country Fried Steak anywhere. Excellent crispy crust and the sausage gravy was thick and flavorful. Accompanied by hash browns, eggs, and a huge biscuit, this feast was more than I could consume in one sitting. So I have a nice breakfast in a box waiting in the fridge. Daniel chose a special menu item-Spicy Chicken Eggs Benedict Biscuits with Chorizo Gravy. WOW. Talk about a scrumptious Southern-ish version of this classic. Just about perfect. The service at Metro never fails to be above average. Attentive, but not irritating. Genuine and friendly. Just right! My only issue with Metro is the noise level. Alas, this is a common theme most anywhere we go. Squawking kids or loud (sometimes highly intoxicated)females. At times, both lol. But pick your battles, right?! My extended family lives in Jacksonville and this is always our go-to breakfast spot and a must do restaurant for anyone in the area! The metro has always treated our family like well family. The favorites we have are the Pot Pie, huevo rancheros and chicken & waffles! Just recently we went for dinner on our way up for Thanksgiving and had their burger, amazing. Metro Diner is a good chain with many locations throughout the states. I use to eat at one in Atlanta (Roswell) on Saturday mornings with a friend until it closed down. It's really nothing special when it comes to food; just basically breakfast and lunch; diner style. I usually get the eggs benedict and it's always pretty good; with a side of hash browns and a few cups of coffee. When we first saw this Metro Diner I didn't know it was part of the corporate chain because I see people waiting outside to get in like it's something unique. That's one thing that drew us to visit. But sadly my excitement turned to well I've had this before. Not sure why so many people wait in line to get in here. I guess the one in Atlanta just wasn't as popular. I will say the food is pretty consistent with the other I've been to, but the service is a lot better. The hostess and servers here are friendly and do a good job.
