We ordered take-out for curbside pickup this evening. I got fish and chips, which was excellent. But, the burger I ordered for my daughter was not so excellent. I did ask for it well done, but this was more of a charred inedible briquette that she refused to eat (I don't blame her), so she had fries and a bun for dinner. The patty was really thin, so I think it was just easy to overcook. I do know they were busy and understaffed, but I would have appreciated a redo when they realized they burned the burger instead of packing it up and sending it out. read more

I'd been hearing a lot about Metro Diner lately and knew I had to check them out. They are off of Falls of Neuse near the PDQ and Fresh Market. We went in on Saturday around 9am and there was a little confusion over which tables were actually open, but once that was figured out we were seated right away. By the time we left there did seem to be a bit of a wait. They have a great outdoor waiting area if it is a nice day and you want a spot to sit and wait for your name to be called. I love corn beef hash and literally order it at every breakfast spot that has it. They make their own at Metro Diner and it was quite tasty, a good balance of potato to corn beef. I would definitely order it again. It comes with poached eggs, which were good, but they were sitting in so much water it was hard to get them out successfully and still enjoy the yolk and not have it include half a bowl of water. Hopefully that was just a fluke and it won't be like that next time. My husband ordered a sausage, egg, and cheese, on a croissant and he thoroughly enjoyed it. I came here while inbetween beauty treatments at skin sense spa. Me and my friend sat at the bar and had breakfast food. My eggs Benedict was delicious, and she enjoyed hers as well. Overall the atmosphere was very positive from the staff. They were busy and happy. This kind of energy will bring repeat customers alone. I wanted to be in the environment longer just because of how upbeat and excited the workers were. It was pretty crowded and I can imagine it may have been a 15/20 min wait for a table. I arrived with a friend on a Sunday around 11:30am and the line was practically out the door, but the tables turned around quickly and our wait for two was only about 20 minutes. The menu is extensive with a variety of breakfast options for everyone - my friend and I both decided to order the "Metro Diner Favorites" of Fried Chicken & Waffles and Charleston Shrimp & Grits, and WOW. There's a reason why these dishes are their top sellers! The huge portion of crispy, juicy fried chicken paired perfectly with the sweet chili syrup, and we loved the addition of the whipped strawberry butter. The Charleston Shrimp & Grits was also fantastic - there was a large serving of two thick fried grit cakes topped with jumbo shrimp, andouille sausage, and creamy gravy. Got the Charleston shrimp and grit and they were so delicious! Loved the mix of crispy grit cake and bacon and creamy shrimp. The portions were very large as well. What a great new addition to the area. I went to Metro Diner with a friend for "brunch" because it is the best meal in my opinion. You can order breakfast all day which is a HUGE win for me. Metro Diner has a wonderful menu with enough options for anyone. I couldn't decide between the Monte Cristo and the Yo Hala on the Square. I opted for the Yo Hala because that is why this restaurant was featured on Drivers, Drive-ins and Dives. Yo Hala on the Square is two thick slices of challah bread stuffed with a mixture of bananas, brown sugar, cream cheese and hazelnut syrup, prepared like French toast topped with a blueberry strawberry compote. It was VERY filling (yes I ate the whole thing), but I didn't LOVE it. The flavor was good, but I just wanted a little something more. My friend ordered the Monte Cristo (and demonstrated a lot more will-power) and only ate half of his. It looked amazing, and I am more than likely going to get that next time. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The facility was clean and trendy. Sweet tea was banging. Now onto the juicy info- if you are unsure what to get- GET THE CHICKEN POT PIE for dinner. The restaurant was extremely packed today and now I know why. If you're in the Raleigh area, I highly suggest you come here. I was worried the food would be subpar and taste like food from Denny's or IHOP and I couldn't have been more wrong. I also can't believe I'm saying this but the fried chicken here was some of the best friend chicken I have ever had. It was extremely flavorful, juicy, and cooked perfectly. Name a better duo than chicken and waffles?! There are a few great ones out there but this one deserves a top spot, especially from Metro Diner. The chicken was so crispy and delicious and the Belgian waffle was so fluffy and the strawberry butter went perfectly with it. Their signature sweet and spicy sauce was so good with the chicken, they even let us in on the "secret" recipe. My family of 3 decided to skip the wait for a table inside or outside and sat right at the counter. Since it was around Brunch time, I got a Mimosa plus Chicken and Waffles. The chicken is brined first(at least that is how it looked coming out of the kitchen). This is a really great diner with a huge dining room, an expansive menu, and super friendly service for the server (Kiara?). They were happy to accommodate our special requests and our drinks were never more than half empty. Everything we ordered was really tasty and I was thrilled to find a place that makes real hashbrowns exactly as they are meant to be; crisp and brown but not greasy or dry inside. Here's the rundown: Shrimp and grits- this dish comes with grit cakes that have andouille sausage inside them but server said you can opt for "loose grits" instead if you wish chicken Parmesan- this plate was absolutely enormous! It came with three huge chicken cutlets in addition to a huge pile of pasta and a side of garlic bread. hashbrowns with jalapeños- perfect. That's it, just perfect. loaded chips- we got these with the pulled pork on the side since I don't eat meat and they disappeared so quickly that I don't even have a photo! They are that good! Mac and cheese- tastes like southern baked macaroni and cheese without the big layer of cheese on top. It's just a little bit creamy and well seasoned. This is NOT kraft-style mac and cheese. It is really good and totally satisfying! They also offer an assortment of homemade desserts that sounded absolutely delicious but we didn't have the space to order one. Also, the manager stopped by our table to make sure everything was OK which is a nice touch, especially in a diner! I came here for brunch on a Sunday because the reviews were great... the parking isn't terrible but it's def full. When you walk in you get a vintage diner feel and it's packed! So definitely prepare for a wait. I ended up sitting at the bar because i didn't want to wait so maybe that's the reason the service was...weird? Our server wasn't rude but she wasn't welcoming nor was she helpful with choosing a meal. I'll just assume that her menu knowledge wasn't up to par. I kinda felt rushed when deciding ( they were packed). She came and checked on us and made sure our drinks were full but the experience was just very blah. I ended up getting the croissant French toast, with eggs, hash browns and turkey sausage. - great take on French toast which is my favorite breakfast meal the croissant was sweet and fluffy. My eggs were scramble light and they weren't dry at all. All in all the place is great for brunch and a tasty weekend breakfast. The food gets 4.5 stars but the waitress is the reason i won't give this place a overall 5 The experience was just dampened. ******UPDATE-8.12.18******* The service is still pretty mediocre. The waiter messed up my order which i knew would happen (he was rushing and not writing anything down. When my order finally came out it was cold.
