GROSS! after waiting an hour and a half for this culinary tragedy to arrive, here is what we experienced... I hate leaving bad reviews, but this is one of those rare occasions that deserve it, mainly because I want to warn people about their "food" if you can call it that... The beef lule kabob was ROTTEN, it had the odor and taste of meat that had been frozen for months then thawed out and cooked, it was disgusting. We also had the misfortune of trying their "lamb kabob" which was tough beyond belief, drenched in oil, and completely covered in rosemary, clearly an effort to mask the fact that it was also frozen prior to reheating. The gyro meat....tasteless, dry, also disgusting. That's the running theme, everything is tasteless, no seasoning, except what they used to try to hide the taste of spoiled, old meat. And now, the final insult to middle eastern food....the hummus!!! I've never experienced flavorless hummus, it's as if they purposely extracted the flavor from all the food! There should be flavors even accidentally! AND the hummus was watery, rather than the usual thick and creamy texture that hummus should have, even after we added salt and olive oil, we couldn't get over the watery texture, clearly they did this to extend the amount of hummus they have in stock. The only decent item in this gross order was the pita bread, and that's because it was store bought, and they didn't even have any shame about that, because the delivery came with the bread still in the store bag it comes from (photo attached). Cafe Bravo, Cafe Ravo, etc. It's all owned by one family going through ownership changes. The food always hits the spot and that doesn't change. I pretty much tried everything here and the best items are the dark meet chicken kabobs and their chicken wings. The lamb is a hit or miss depending on how long it's cooked. What makes this place even better is the customer service. Everyone here is friendly and will try to do what they can for you when ordering. Just be respectful and don't expect the food to be done instantly. They cook the meat when ordered so you might have to wait 10 minutes or so. This isn't McDonalds. Update 3/26/13: This place is a cool little "secret." The value is outstanding and quality is top notch. Everything tastes fresh and yummy. The hummus is smooth and homemade and they serve the best ikra (roasted eggplant/tomato side dish) we've ever had. I don't understand the negative reviews posted. We have never ever had anything less than a 5 star experience in terms of food and service here. And we are demanding. We like to split our salad (it's easily big enough for two) and we ask for extra dressing - all these requests are met with a smile and great service. The meats are always cooked to perfection. And as for the reviewer who claims she "got tired" after eating here due to MSG - OMFG - she must be out of her mind or maybe going into menopause. What a moron. Nothing special. I ordered the beef kebab plate for take away and it was mediocre at best. I asked for my meat medium and it came well done, chewy and flavorless. No salt or marinade, no parsley or lemon/lime wedge on the side for the bland white rice. To my surprise when I opened my takeaway there were no utensils or napkins. When I got to Meze to pay for my food the customer service was lacking. Not too friendly or warm, spaced out woman behind the counter charged my card and i was out the door without a 'see you soon' or 'thank you for coming' Three stars for convenience. I would try it again but not anytime soon. Mixto's Mexican restaurant (less than a block away) offers tasty meat for comparable prices and they also deliver. $25 minimum if you want delivery from Meze. Free parking. Not a date place or a special dinner spot- rather a 'no-frills' quick bite by yourself. read more

I used to love this place, before the name change and owner split from Cafe Bravo. Knowing that it wasn't completely new owners I was more than willing to continue giving my business to them. Unfortunately I have now given them chance after chance and they are continuously going downhill. It started with the bean and corn salad. A simple idea, but previously done so perfectly with just the right amount of dressing (oil and vinegar?) and parsley. Now I don't know that there is any kind of dressing and there is way way way too much parsley. It's like a can of beans and corn were thrown together and to mask the boring they threw in a whole bunch of parsley. I mentioned this one time and the owner seemed to listen but no changes in my subsequent visits. I stopped ordering the chicken shawarma because it was always dry and crunchy. (and the price went up to boot!) Thinking maybe I am just going at the wrong time, I went to the kebobs with garlic sauce to satisfy my craving. Also dry and not so amazing. Sometimes they put dressing on their salad but often times not. I don't eat the rice and end up wasting the salad because its dry. Delivery minimum raised from $15 t0 $25 - putting it out of reach for most single/couple orders. This was my number one spot in the past for healthy 'fast' food. I may give them another chance when I am really desperate but it will not be the once every week or 2 that I did in the past. The people here are great: friendly, helpful. But the food used to be wonderful. It's gone downhill big time. My boyfriend used to get the chicken shwarma and thought it was great. It used to be golden brown and delicious. In the past few months, it's been these chopped little pieces of yellow chicken that is flavorless. I've ordered the falafel and I think it may be the worst falafel I've ever had. Very much like cardboard. The portions are now smaller and the food doesn't seem as fresh. We don't eat here much anymore but used to quite a bit. This is the third time we've tried it in recent months (12/14) and have noticed the decline. Please raise your standards again, Meze. I've come here about 5 or so times after work. I get the same thing every time because it's just convenient. The vegetarian sandwich is stuffed with chopped veggies and the dolmas, which are these two-inch veggie stuffed egg roll looking things, but are wrapped with grape leaves. The entire sandwich is about 12 inches long. I like to take a couple or three dolmas out of the sandwich because the flavor gets overwhelming for my taste. I wish they offered half a sandwich, because the entire sandwich is way too big to finish in one sitting. All the times I've come here the same man has taken my order. He's about my height (5'5"), hispanic, has an off-and-on-again mustache and a contagious smile. I swear the god he is the most consistently friendly thing I've ever met. I recently asked for a side of pita bread and hummus, which isn't on the menu. It's $5 for a small container of hummus and pita bread alone isn't a menu option. Anyways he gave me 3 pieces of pita bread and a small container of hummus at no charge. Word to the staff: give this man a raise. While I wouldn't rank Meze as one of the best fast food Mediterranean spots I've been to--I've been to plenty for the record--this man's customer's service is why I'm giving it a solid 5 stars. read more

Way better than any Zankou Chicken. The food here is so delicious! It's all homemade so don't expect a rapid turnaround but I assure you that whatever you order will be worth the wait. Favorites are: Chicken Swarma, luleh, or beef kabobs. The sides are always fresh and clean and so super tasty! I just had the most tender and juicy Chicken Swarma wrap made with some wonderful yogurt sauce, lettuce..mmmmmmmmm I don't know what exactly in the wrap because I don't have the menu with me but oooh yum yum yum. They have orange pelligrino to drink, too! The cafe area is clean and comfortable enough. They also deliver, you can also order to go. The staff is not warm and fuzzy but they get the job done. One teeny tiny concern. Sometimes the staff will answer the phone and take an order while you'll be standing there ready to pay, ready to order. I believe the people in front of you should take priority over people on the phone. Meze rules!!! read more

I actually feel like this place is 2.5 stars because there are certain circumstances when this place kind of works for ya... Pros--friendly service, clean, and the sides are good--hummus, tabbouleh, eggplant, cabbage, tomato Zuke salad, pickled veg. Parking lot and street parking ok. Easy to get in and out and nice ambiance for a fast/casual place. The reason for the two stars--- the meat is ok but nothing special. They don't really grill or roast their meat so you don't get a crispy texture. And the seasoning is just ok but kind of bland. Chicken is way too lemony, gyro wasn't crispy and portion was small, and their lule kebab portion was nice but again no charring or roasting on their meat. I had this place bookmarked for a while, so I was excited to pick up some good from here on a super hot day where there was no way I was going to turn on the stove or oven. I ordered the shwarma chicken plate through EAT 24, expecting at around 5:30-6 it'd be a little busy. Came in to pick up and it was empty. Seemed kinda silly that I ordered in advance...oops. It smelled so good in the car!! Opened up my to-go bag: two warm pitas, a garlic sauce container, chicken, salad, tabouli and hummus. YUM. So stoked. Unfortunately, the chicken rated like it had been cooked earlier and had just been microwaved for my order or they just over cooked it. Either way, what should've been the best part of my plate was kind of the low point. Hummus was solid, salad was fine, but the tabouli was also salty, somehow. I ate way more pita than I wanted to to try to off balance the saltiness, but eventually just had to stop eating the chicken and tabouli. Maybe other things are good here? I haven't had the falafel so I can't speak to that. I come here at least once a week and while the taste of some items varies a little (specifically the tahini, gyro meat, spiciness of jalapeno hummus), it's pretty dang good and of high quality. Props to the owner (I'm assuming) who is a Lakers fan. Main gripes - they definitely shut down by 9. One time they clearly wanted to be done and said they were closed at about 8:50. Not the end of the world, but not The service is not fast because they cook the meat once they get an order -- so don't come here if you're looking for a street vendor selling cheap doner kebabs in Germany. There are certain employees I'd rather deal with than others. Leave it at that. Still 5 stars. BEWARE! HOW THE MIGHTY HAS FALLEN! After an absence of 3 years I returned, licking my chops in anticipation. The shawarma was inedible. There was no longer a spit. It appeared from the back and was reheated with water. Steamed almost and inexplicably the yellow of turmeric. This resulted in tough dried out chicken with a wet and soggy exterior cut in small pieces and obviously "seasoned" multiple times. Incredibly salty and sad. I packed up my sides, left the chicken at the table, and went to Cugurt for lunch. I advise you do the same. You can't go home again. read more

Came in today & got the Lamb kabob sandwich which is Lamb, tomato, cilantro, & garlic sauce on Armenian bread. Although it was tasty I think it could've been filled just a little more. The proportion of filling to bread was a bit off. I also wish there was more garlic sauce on it!! So definitely get an extra sauce. I also got grape leaves & baklava. The grape leaves were really good & basic. The baklava was different than I'm used to so I wouldn't recommend it. Ok, I'm writing a well deserved update for Meze now. I gave these guys 5 stars now because the owner and the staff have improved leaps and bounds. The orders are meticulous, the food is deliciously consistent (flawless), they have a new woman answering the phone and taking orders perfectly - shes FRIENDLY, their timing is 1000% better - and even on one night, the owner himself personally delivered a large batch of free picked radishes to my home - remembering where my house was - because one night I called and they were out of them. Anyway - top notch neighborhood spot and love having these guys in Silverlake. In fact, we are ordering from them tonight! Thanks for the awesome improvements Meze! read more

This place is good, not great, but it feels like it could be. Meze falls short when you compare it to some of the kabob places in Glendale which offer really amazing kabobs and spectacular house made sides, and if you haven't tried some of these places then Meze will probably taste great. I do appreciate the fact that Meze cooks your meat to order, which makes it take a bit longer and I'll happily wait. I do wish the chicken had a bit more spice or flavor to it, the steak kabob on the other hand is well seasoned. Sometimes the side dishes are hit or miss, for example the other night their rice was clearly made with too much water and was soggy; the cucumber yogurt was watery instead of creamy like a thick Greek yogurt, how it should be. They used to have excellent ikra (eggplant in red sauce) but changed the recipe and now it tastes nothing like before. They do have a nice variety hummus, but their failure to cover them in the counter display causes that unappetizing layer that quickly forms on top of these types of dips and makes me never want to order them. I fundamentally disagree with their charging 50 cents for garlic sauce, this is a staple condiment for this cuisine; the worst is when you simply forget to ask for it and get home with NO garlic sauce which practically ruins the whole experience. I also think they should throw in a lemon wedge for just such an occasion. The girl who works at the counter is a snoot and I practically stopped going here because of her alone. This scenario has happened repeatedly: I've called in an order, arrived 20 minutes later per their request, then the counter gal has made me wait an additional 20 minutes without apology. This kind of thing is hugely frustrating, defeats the purpose of calling your order in ahead and it seems to happen a lot here. In that extra 20 minutes I can get to Glendale and back and pick up a far superior kabob plate. read more

I love love love the food here. I always order all my catering from here and all my guests are always asking where I order my food from. Workers very friendly , prices are reasonable compare to other Mediterranean restaurants, and not to talk about the flavors, it's to die for (mmmmm mouth watering). Meze is a great neighborhood lunch spot. I live close by and will often pick it up if I'm working from home. I'm not a huge fan of their shawarma, as they don't use one of those AutoDöner rotating spit dealies, but rather they just sautée par-cooked chicken in a pan. But the chicken kabob! Wow! They have an excellent signature spice blend and the chicken is always juicy and perfectly cooked. I'll often order the kabob a la carte (comes with a pita), and throw in a small side of cabbage or shirazi salad for a well rounded and inexpensive meal. Don't forget the garlic sauce! But for some reason, they do it so well that I actually ask them to "skip the rice and give me double eggplant." What the eff?!? I swear, I literally cannot stand Eggplant. But I had to mention how outstanding it is & give proper props to Meze, as any restaurant that can make me enjoy & even crave a dish I don't even usually eat or like??...
