I like almost everything about this place. Kitschy decor, good food, good service. But...they are still serving condiments in single use plastic while we experience a global crisis from such use of single use plastic. There are just too many other options to offer cream for your coffee and jelly for toast. Like little metal pitchers and metal ramkins. I enjoyed this place. Quick and easy place for breakfast or lunch. They are open 7-2pm. I had the meatloaf and it was very comforting it came with a side of sour cabbage soup. Great place for either breakfast or lunch. We went for lunch had meatloaf dinner and a hamburger. Both were very good and people said the meatloaf was the best ever. It looked delicious. Went back a couple days later for breakfast. The place was jammed but thats okay. Breatfast was great. Will pateonize the restaurant next time we visit Cathredal City. read more

A simple, tasty breakfast option. We sat outside with our dog, as a few other patrons did. They were welcoming to the pets, bringing water and treats for the pups. Food was good. The menu had a lot of options and featured standard diner breakfast fare. Nothing crazy, nothing mind-blowing. But we had a reliable meal. Not much else to add. Came here after being recommended by a friend. We were told this was the breakfast place. However we went for lunch and ordered the french dip. I love a good french dip but I am picky. It came out and so excited to bite into it. Roll was great, dip was tasty but the meat tasted more like corn beef than roast beef. The meat sort of crumbled also which was weird. This is a very good place to get a quick and affordable breakfast. The food was tasty and there is something for everyone. I'd much rather get breakfast here than a fast food place of IHOP-type place. The only reason my rating is mediocre is because the restaurant was nothing special, and our experience that day was slightly undesirable. Our greeter took our drink order and when we asked if they had cream for the coffee, he pointed and the individual creamer packs on the table and replied sarcastically, "that is cream". I know it was a misunderstanding, but he didn't have to be rude like that. Our server was nice and very friendly and helpful. I usually love Michaels. I haven't been for a year and haven't even gone for pickup. But the last time I was there, I had the most delicious pastrami sandwich I ever ate. There was so much meat that I could only eat half. I brought the other half home and made another whole sandwich for my boyfriend and I to share. Last week I couldn't wait to have another pastrami sandwich. My son picked it up and we ate at home. It tasted delicious but it was not the sandwich I was expecting. There were about 50 little pieces of pastrami and every piece had either a line of fat along the edge or somewhere along the pastrami. By the time I peeled off all the fat there was enough meat for a small sandwich. The rye bread was too thick taking away from the enjoyment of the pastrami. Altogether terrible. I won't try Michaels for pastrami again!! read more

This is exactly the type of place you need in every city! Solid traditional breakfasts, friendly staff, a bar for bloody mary's and not a lame national chain. Food was perfect dinner food and fairly priced. I didn't even visit inside since we were on the patio, but I'd return! Classic for a diner style breakfast. Well lit, safe parking lot in the front. Counter seating as well as tables. Indoor and outdoor seating. Dog friendly. Had the cheese scrambled eggs and hash browns. I will say that the hash browns could have been browner and crispier on the outside. But everything was delicious. First time at Michael's, the place was packed so I assumed the food must be great, not the case. My wife had a simple grilled chicken breast. It was pounded flat and turned out to be rubber chicken. Tough to cut even with a serrated knife. I had the open face brisket, with mashed and gravy on the side. The portion of brisket was adequate, but tasted as if it had been on a steam table. The corn beef hash is made at the restaurant, and was excellent. The wait staff is attentive, and the place is very clean and well maintained. Tried this place for the first time today for an early lunch. I ordered the Deluxe Bacon Cheeseburger with fries. The burger was very large; at least 1/3 pound. The ground beef did not taste fresh. Very "gamy." The tomato slices and pickles were not up to par either. Fries were "just OK." The place was crowded and the breakfast dishes on the tables around me looked much more appealing. Perhaps should have ordered breakfast instead. Service was good, waitress was pleasant, and nice "old fashioned diner" atmosphere. I might give this place another try, but I won't order the burgers again. (A suggestion to the management: A busy counter 3 feet away from people who are eating, is not the place to role napkins and silverware for tables. Came here with a friend visiting from New York. Both my companions had omlets. Both were pleased; one (who had the Texas Chili Omlet) was ecstatic. I had a chicken salad that was quite good, but not spectacular. Our waitress advised me to take the half-sized salad and I'm glad I did. It was quite large and I could barely finish it. This Restaurant is one of my favorites. Yesterday was my first time going and I wish I had tried this place sooner. Probably one of the best restaurants to go for breakfast in Cathedral City! The tapestry of Marilyn Monroe photographs liberally and indiscriminately fill the walls of this otherwise simply decorated place. The crowd consists of old people in their modern chic old people accessories - spandex, gaudy jewels, hi tech walking sticks, SASes (it is in the Desert, after all). The Monroe-obessed decorations and its patrons give Michael's Cafe a terrific character of its own. So, on to the food. Their single best item is their biscuits and gravy (no joke). The gravy is just the right amount of thickness with mild hints of chicken stock and bits of ground meat. The Cobb Salad is also very good. The pastrami sandwich is also a plus. The meat has terrific moisture and is full of sour and salty flavor. The size of their menu is also a plus. It's just large enough to have a little bit of everything, but not big enough to be overwhelming. read more

Well, I did go back on Sunday for eggs benedict. The place was jam-packed at 11 a.m.! Not an empty seat available. Service was understandably slow, but I was with a group of neighbors who had just met, and we were enjoying getting to know each other. I had a decent, but small, bloody mary ($4) and the eggs benedict. My rating is for the food. Eggs were perfectly poached; canadian bacon and English muffins were just fine. BUT, the "hollandaise" sauce, which should have been the star of the show, had to have been out of a jar and had no resemblance or taste to the traditional sauce. Actually, it was pretty bad. I've been to Michael's 4x in the last week: 3x for breakfast/brunch, and once for lunch. It's so convenient to my house, and the food, for the most part, is really good. I don't understand some of the negative reviews expressed by others on Yelp... I've been here at least a dozen times (for breakfast only though), both in-season and off-season, and have always had a pleasant experience. It's all about expectations I guess, which is the reason for my 5 stars. Yes the food is basic, but everything I've had has been good and pretty much what you would expect. This is breakfast and lunch people - how creative do you really want them to be?? My partner and I think the pancakes are some of the best we've ever had! The prices are fair for what you get and the menu has had enough variety for anyone we've been there with. The servers are always friendly and super quick! Yeah, maybe Marilyn Monroe IS omnipresent throughout the decor... but at least she lends this place some character and a fun "theme" (which is much needed when you're situated in a strip mall). If you're in the area and want something casual and "diner-style" without the mega chain restaurant atmosphere, then Michaels is a great place to start your day! read more
