Be careful of the meat quality at these low end Chinese restaurants; not all the meat they use is of USDA quality. If it doesn't look right don't eat it. They can import meat from China and Vietnam which is way below what you get in a supermarket and still legal for consumption. Best items are the $4.75 egg waffle and any veggie dish. 3.5 stars We've heard some positive comments from our Chinese friends, didn't have the chance to try until recently. In the past month, we had a simple dinner for two and a Peking Duck combo meal with a bunch of friends for lunch. Our dinner experience was pretty good. The huge bowl of house special congee was good, it was the right consistency loaded with all kinds of seafood, flavor was mild and not overly MSG'd. We also ordered salt and pepper ribs and a beef string bean dish; the ribs were pretty good, string beans could be more tender, both with generous portions. Service was kind of interesting, we found the waiter to be impatient, not necessarily rude, almost a little comical. We were interested to try the special Peking duck combo meal ($89 - duck, soup or congee with the bones, 4 dishes from the list and some dessert). On a Wednesday at lunch time the place was not that busy about 70% full. We had a total of 7, chose congee instead of soup with salt & pepper ribs, fired fish fillet, Chinese gai-lan with smoke meat and beef cube/shrimp with mushrooms from the list. In addition we ordered beef chow fun and fried rice with salted fish and chicken. Our waitress was nice and helpful who made some good recommendations and hinted that we may be ordering too much. We got a lot of food, a big plate of semi deboned duck with steamed buns and a large bowl of very tasty congee, by far the high light of the meal. Ribs were good as we remembered, fish was smaller portion, not as good. Gai lan was done well and beef / shrimp / mushrooms dish was a very good choice. The fried rice was very flavorful (salted fish) but the chow fun didn't impress. We also received some coconut and mango jello for dessert. For approx $20 pp it was a good value although I'm not sure there was much advantage with the combo, we could just order the Peking duck two ways plus some dishes with more freedom of choices. I ordered a BBQ pork and chicken rice plate which costs $14.72 and this is what I get: Just 4 extremely small pieces of chicken and 7 pieces of pork. There are more veggies than BBQ meat they might as well call it a bokchoi rice plate. This kind of portion does not justify the price at all even in the Bay Area. English name really lost in translation here. It is a Congee specialty store where it features over 10 kinds of congees. They offer mainly Cantonese food with some very interesting choices that you don't see at other places and they represent some very local places in Guangdong province, very nice. So, the congee. Not the most traditional clay pot congee is served here but the consistency and flavor are very on point, very smooth. The rice grains are broken because of the longtime cooking and release the starches to make the soup very creamy. To adjust to the American culture they offer those big bowls of super congees with a ton of toppings, which are not bad at all. We did order other dishes here as well. Some of them are average and some of them are pretty good. On some occasions, we ordered the egg waffle and it was cold, which means the quality of food is not very consistent. I do want to mention that we think the price a little bit high here compared to restaurants of similar level. This place is disgusting, my mother bought takeout and recooking it the next day the food looked unappetizing and they tasted horrible! I say this because their veggies are not fresh at all, after reheating the next day, the color of the veggie already bled onto the tofu. Also, in order to tenderize their black pepper beef, they've put way too much baking soda, so when I reheat it, the texture is soft but you can clearly feel it on your tongue that it has a layer of mush! Yelp is notoriously unreliable for Chinese food. Either there are almost no reviews (ie: Vancouver, BC) or the average simply trends toward 3/3.5 Stars. As that's frequently the case between some of the best places and the worst places, I almost always have to go to source #2: the folks. They've been eating way longer than I have and it's not by coincidence I grew up loving food too. Next door Hong Kong Saigon has apparently been on a bit of a slide in the past years. Whereas in years past, I've had feasts galore (divine winter melon soups, stir fried Alaskan King crab and lobster) that was many years ago and chefs often move on. When my parents said they had actually been coming to this place next door instead of HK Saigon, I decided to come by and see why. It's a fairly large place and while the decor is nothing to write home about, there's plentiful seating via lots of tables and many booths. It's a good thing it's spacious as the place quickly fills up and people are often here before the noon time, so it's not strictly a workplace crowd. Typical Cantonese fare (noodle soups, rice dishes, BBQ platters) are the specialty and it's most similar to Cooking Papa. Service is as you'd expect at a busy Chinese place. Our order: Clear Broth Beef Noodle Soup - served with wide hor fun noodles and served with 3-4 pieces of beef brisket. The waiter said they were tender and they were ok. Not melt in your mouth, but nowhere as tough as some of the versions I had at Liang's or Mama Chef. Broth is clear so nowhere as savory as Taiwanese beef noodle soup, but it does in a pinch. Tong Ho - this is a rarely available vegetable and though the waiter commented in Chinese that an Americanized guy like me would probably not appreciate it at all, I liked it quite a bit. It's reminiscent of water spinach and was sauteed with garlic and a touch of shrimp paste. Quite good. BBQ Combination - the real stars here. I was recommended to get the roast duck and it's excellent here. Easily one of the best in the Bay Area and I'd give it the nod over Cooking Papa. I recently used grocery coupons to buy a roast duck at 99 Ranch and that version is so pathetic compared to what I had here. The BBQ Pork Neck, which looks like char siu but is much tastier and leaner, was very good as well. I was impressed with the BBQ platter here and would come just for that. Overall, I had a solid meal here at Ming Tasty. Most items here are probably just ok, but there are a few standouts like the BBQ Pork Neck and Roast Duck that I could keep coming back for. Not your average run of the mill Chinese restaurant with the sweat and sour pork, egg fu young etc. Mings is centered around Cantonese/ Hong Kong style food. From full sized baked rice entrees, to tapas sized plates to share, Mings has some very unique selection. Come ready to eat wtih an open mind, as this place is no cookie cutter Panda Express. Their name to fame is the roasted suckling pig. Ohhhh so yummy. Nice crispy brown shelled skin with a fatty gooey meat center. The dish is served diced up in bite sized pieces along side some accompanying sauce which can be best described in my ability as a hoysin/ chinese BBQ sauce. Pairs perfectly with the meat. Ordered up some pepper and garlic salted house wings which were a delight to snack on as well as some fried tofu. Great to have with some brewskis to wash them down. We also had the baked seafood rice place, stuffed with white fish, shrimp and all sorts of goodies topped with a white cream sauce and crusted with a melted chard cheddar cheese. Ming's is definitely not the healthiest of meals, but an awesome place to come and fill up your belly with some nice rich and hearty Hong Kong style food. It's got that somewhat a hole in the wall cafe feel, so don't come expecting top notch service or the cleanest environment to wine and dine in. It definitely has that family grunge cafe feel to it with the hustle and bustle of tables getting turned around for the next group of patrons. The food was stellar, the food came out quickly, the staff was friendly, and we even got complimentary dessert. I don't know the names of all the dishes we got, but everything was boss. The guy who frequents this place likes their Congee. Turns out I like it too. Like other Hong Kong-style cafes, this place has a huge menu, so if you come back, you can always try something new. Also, the chairs are purple, and there are shiny tiles on the wall. The design of this place is like a disco hall crossed with a baby girl's bedroom. The price has kept increasing and it now costs almost 40 dollars for a roasted duck. At least I expect getting all the meat pieces. Ming Tasty is a decent restaurant...provided that you really like authentic Cantonese food. Their menu is very extensive and I do not believe they excel in everything they offer. Your best bet is to sticky with traditional Cantonese dishes and not wander too far off. You can't go wrong with their porridge, as well as many of their self proclaimed 'specialty dishes'. Clay pot rice is wonderful but many of their stir fried and noodle were just average. Dim sum was fine but do not even attempt to get any of their western dishes. You have been warned. When in doubt, ask the waitstaff. If they are not too busy selling you their pre-fix menu they could give good recommendation. If you are a Cantonese food novice this is not a good starter place. This is your typical Cantonese cafe. Came here on a Sunday morning planning on eating dim sum at Saigon, but the line was way too long so we came to Ming Tasty instead. We ordered the fish ball rice noodle soup, seafood congee, pig's feet noodle, and chicken feet dim sum. Everything was mediocre at best. The fish ball rice noodle soup was incredibly bland. The seafood congee was probably the best dish we ordered. There wasn't much seafood in the congee besides imitation crab meat, which was kind of disappointing. The pig's feet noodle was also bland. The yellow noodles on the side were also very runny. The chicken feet was the worst! Chicken feet is my favorite dish at dim sum, and this one was just inedible. It was dried and looked stale. Overall pretty good. My mom suggested Ming Tasty after coming for lunch one day with her co-workers and wanted to take us. The restaurant was jam-packed and even though it was past 2pm. Seemed a bit dry but had good flavor and was crisp/flaky. Zhaliang or Youtiao wrapped in rice noodle (seen in menu as Doughnut Fritters Rice Noodle) This was my favorite dish by far. The rice noodle was super fresh and makes me think they make their rice noodles in house. Seafood Chow Fun - Good flavor, cooked perfectly. Rice noodles again seemed very fresh and seem to be house made. ShaoMai & HaGao we both fresh and well made. For the life of me I dont remember what used to be in the space here before. One day I had to eat early before a meeting and showed up with a friend right at 12. Shit was packed on a monday! Did these folks all show up at 11? Holy Fuck. Luckily a table in the corner cleared up and we slid in. Got the roast duck, green onion lamb, black pepper filet, and pot stickers. All fairly solid Cantonese fare. The booths are kind of weird as they have opposing facing chairs in which if you move one side you move the people behind you too. You can expect the dim sum style crazy crowds while it's still popular. Open for covid! We walked in here by chance since all of the other restaurants in the strip mall was closed. Ordered steamed chicken (half), mapo tofu, XO fried rice, and stir-fried Chinese broccoli. Our fav was the map tofu! The steamed chicken was served with ginger-scallion sauce but the chicken could have been salted more. The broccoli was crunchy and the fried rice was surprisingly the most expensive out of the 4 ($17). Portions are big and the prices are not the cheapest or the most expensive. Give this place a try! We usually hit up Saigon next door for Chinese food, but dad saw this place recently opened so we tried it out. They are more known for their congee, but we went in for dinner. The waiting foyer area is a little weird, and a waste of space. The decor is a fusion of Chinese with Ikea. The clash of neon colors is bold and out of place. Service is really quick. Everyone seemed eager and helpful to make sure we had a good dining experience. I forget exactly what we ordered. Something like lobster noodles, veggies, beef, etc. All I remember is that the food was way too oily and no "wok flavor". Just bland and boring. Well, we've tried it.
