Honestly kind of shocked there's this good of a Thai place just randomly located here in one of the most annoying parts of Manhattan, so close to Times Square. Even though this place may seem like it's overrated or something, it's genuinely good, with a great ambience, and more seating than I thought they would have (after I looked up to see the second floor). This was just a really solid pad see ew. Tasted super fresh and it was a pretty decent portion. I came here with my friend, and it was definitely tight in terms of tables being close to each other and being able to hear one another above the noise, but it wasn't unbearable. I appreciated that I never ran out of water because of the attentive service, and the food came out surprisingly fast. I know people come here because of its central location, so I don't know if I'd come here when I know I can go somewhere not near Times Square to get Thai, BUT it's definitely good to know this is here when you need it. read more

Very nicely decorated with servers walking around refilling water without asking. 2 floors set up for all different size parties. We walked in on a Saturday evening and were able to be put on a short waitlist for a party of 5. The restaurant has plenty of seating (2 floors) and the wait time the hostess gave me was accurate. The service was very accommodating, and they had the table set for a toddler, with a high chair and plastic utensils before we sat down. Our waitress was friendly and explained the menu and specials to us shortly after sitting, and also checked about allergies. The first floor bathroom was spacious, and there was a sign on the door that said there was additional bathrooms upstairs. They have the classic thai items (pad thai, etc), in addition to specific items for each region in Thailand. There are a lot of spicy items on the menu so definitely be aware if you don't eat spicy. I ordered the Pad Mhee Korat and we also got the Gai Gor Lae for the table. The Pad Mhee Korat came with sautéed rice noodle, crispy pork belly, egg, chives, and beansprouts. The pork belly was crispy and juicy, but the rice noodles were a bit salty and stuck together. The Gai Gor Lae had a good flavor but only came with a few skewers. Felt the Thai energy. Mitr Restaurant actually has an authentic Thai food menu, which was very impressive. I sat at the bar and would recommend making a reservation in advance if you are with someone else since it was pretty busy. Came here for dinner on Christmas Eve. We came like 15min before opening and there was already a long line. I was shocked. Thankfully we were able to get seated fairly quickly. But had we been 10-15 min late, we would've had to wait a lot longer because the line kept getting longer. Food here is great. They have a variety of selections, including street food usuals like pad Thai, fried rice, and other common noodle dishes. If you really want the Thai food experience, I recommend staying away from those common dishes and try a variety from their main menu. They did a great job of dividing their menu by different regions and highlighting cuisine specific to each region. I was a little overwhelmed by the menu at first, but our waitress was very informative and helpful. I was really excited to try out Mitr Thai during a recent trip to NYC. The menu is very compelling, with sections dedicated to different regions of Thailand, as well as a section devoted to street food. First off, our server was very friendly and helpful. She was patient with us as we asked lots of questions and for recommendations. The ambiance was also really cool, and I liked the hanging decorations in different parts of the restaurant, like in the entryway and over the stairs. This was our first time here, and we spent forever reviewing the menu before making decisions. There is just so much on there, and although I appreciate the way it's organized and laid out, it makes it hard for indecisive people like me to make decisions :) There were also multiple dishes that had the same proteins but were prepared differently depending on the region, and that felt overwhelming too. In the end, we ordered the Roti Massaman to share as an appetizer. The curry itself was SO delicious! I could have eaten maybe a gallon of it. Although the roti was delicious as well, I found this dish hard to eat. There was a lot more curry than roti, and even if you spooned curry onto the roti, it dripped right off. Dipping was not as functional. I ended up eating the remaining curry with a spoon. For my entree I got the Nam Tok, which is seared sirloin cubes with roasted chili rice powder, mint, red onion, cilantro with Thai chili lime dressing. Even though the server said I could get it less spicy (I do love spice, don't get me wrong and can usually handle a decent amount), I found that it was still quite spicy! I LOVED the flavor but couldn't really finish it because the spice was a bit much. That being said, the flavors were really great (love the acid in there especially). Would I return in the future? I think if I lived in NYC I would return and try more of the menu options because there is a lot on there to try and I might be more wowed with some of the other options. I'm not sure as a visitor I would necessarily go back. For my meal, I ordered their Goong Muk Prik Klua (Fried Shrimp/Calamari) and their Squid Pad Se-Ew. The food came out pretty quickly and I have to say, even with lightening speed, both my dishes were cooked to perfection. My squid was moist and succulent while my rice noodles had the right texture. We ordered the Goong Pae Bai Chaphu (deep fried tiny shrimp and betel leaf pancake) as our appetizer, and the Kao Soy Gai (chicken curry egg noodles) and Larb Ped (crispy duck salad w/ stick rice) as our entrees. Favorite dish was definitely the Larb Ped! The Thai chili lime dressing added a nice, refreshing tartness that I hadn't tasted with duck before. The Kao Soy Gai was also delicious -- the chicken was very tender and practically fell off the bone, and the curry was very flavorful. The fried shrimp pancake was definitely unique -- it was less of a pancake and more so a bunch of deep fried whole tiny shrimp stuck together. It kind of just tasted like a shrimp cracker to me, but the sweet chili sauce was good! Service was excellent -- our server gave us an overview of the menu and provided several recommendations from each of the different regional categories, which was very helpful considering the overwhelming array of options. They were also very good about regularly clearing/refreshing our plates and refilling our waters. It's amazing that I have to come to New York, from Florida, with a billion Thai joints, to find food this good. From the hot pot to the hot plate, it was awesome! Mitr had been on my list of Thai restaurants to go to since moving to New York and I honestly was blown away by the experience. The restaurant had a nice ambiance and my friend and I were lucky enough to be seated right next to some really interesting decorations. The menu at Mitr showcases food across the various regions of Thailand and the dishes all sounded amazing so we had to ask the waitress what she recommended. We ended up just ordering everything she recommended which were the Roti Massamun, Goong Muk Prik Klua, and Short Rib Prik Kang. The Roti Massamun was absolutely phenomenal, with the roti itself being a nice soft and pillowy texture that soaked up the aromatic and rich Massamun curry. The curry was so good that we couldn't let a single drop go to waste and so we poured the rest over our white rice that came with the main dishes. The Goong Muk Prik Klua was flash fried shrimp and squid with a spicy dipping sauce. The sauce was really fragrant and genuinely spicy but to be honest, the seasonings and spices used to fry the shellfish were so good that the sauce wasn't even needed much. It went perfectly with the rice and remaining curry to provide a flavor packed bite each time. Rounding out the dishes was the short rib which may have been the star of the show. I was pleasantly surprised by the hefty portion of the dish and the flavor matched the size. The curry sauce was paired really well with the fatty tender rib meat, especially over white rice. I think I was expecting more of a juicy sauteed type style with spicy, succulent shrimp, but this was prepared a bit differently. More of a fried preparation with some type of batter around the shrimps, so I found it kind of dry and wasn't really spicy. Served with big pieces of squid, prepared in the same batter/fry, which were not my favorite and also kind of hard to eat because they were big and not easy to bite. Pad Thai was good, my preferred of the 2 dishes, but also not mind blowing. I read all the positive reviews before coming here, so perhaps my expectations were too high, and I was underwhelmed. First things first the space is beautiful. The inside is ornate and full of color and character. Very welcoming right from the start. The employees were also incredibly welcoming as soon as you stepped in the door. We did not have reservations for lunch and they were able to accommodate us, but I do maybe recommend having reservations if possible. It filled up quick. I ordered the sangha beer which was tart and delicious, the pad see ew and the green curry both with chicken. Both dishes were amazing!!! I admit I am conflicted as I reflect on my recent dining experience here. Had a 5pm resy on a Sunday after a matinee Broadway show. We arrived to a pretty impressive line outside the door. Upon entering, we were promptly asked if our entire party of 5 was present. Yes, all here. The hostess immediately told us that we would have the table for 90 minutes. And then we were told again by the woman seating us at our upstairs table. And finally we were yet again reminded of our table time allotment a third time when the very personable server came over to assist with menus and ordering. So I was a bit grumpy by the time I perused the very intriguing menu which organizes items according to region in Thailand. Northern, northeast, central and southern . The menu is perfect for sharing which enabled us all to sample so many things. Started with the Roti Massaman, tasty but not exciting. We then had a hot pot which was a beautiful coconut milk broth with chicken, mushrooms and spicy peppers. Delicious. There was a Branzino special served in a banana leaf which was by far the highlight of the meal. The green curry with shrimp was yummy, but the moderate level of spice was overpowering, best to order mild spice if you want to really savor the complexity of flavors. The lightly fried shrimp and calamari was also spectacular, the batter was not heavy and it was cooked to perfection. The biggest disappointment was the roasted chicken entree with papaya salad. Underwhelming in presentation and bland. As it turns out, the service was on point and despite being reminded too many times about the time limit on our reservations, 90 minutes for five of us was plenty of time to enjoy. We didn't feel rushed. I consider myself to have a very diverse and discerning palate, but admittedly, I am not drawn to Thai food as it is usually a bit sweet for my taste. Some of the dishes here were really quite good. And I can see why it is popular in the theatre district. All in all, a good option if you're grabbing a bite before or after a show. Reservations are a must, and they won't seat you until your entire party is present. Plus, there's a time limit on how long you can occupy the table, which can make the experience feel rushed. We went for a friend's birthday, and while the delays were partly on us (a couple of friends were running late due to work), it was frustrating that they wouldn't seat us until everyone arrived. To make things trickier, reservations aren't held for more than 15 minutes, so if your group isn't punctual, you'll end up on the waitlist. Lesson learned: only book here if you know everyone will be on time. Another heads-up--they charge a fee for cutting a cake, so we opted to take it outside and celebrate after the meal. (Overall: B) - Overall, I found the staff to be extremely friendly, accomodating, and tolerant, which are all great qualities. Even with a reservation, there can be quite a wait to get a table and for the food, but I think their menu structure is quite interesting as it is set up based on the different regions of Thailand. Overall, I gots some hits and misses, but would be down to return for another visit. (Massaman Curry: A+) - I must give the chef compliments for this dish as this chicken based curry had such incredible flavor development that I had to learn how to make this at home immediately. The strong nutty and spicy flavors worked very well together similar to how those pair well in sambal and comforts the well made roti so well. (Pad Thai: D) - My favorite dish to compare Thai restaurants, but unfortunately I found the pork here to be dry.
