First time trying this location as the one on Valencia would technically be closer to me, but I accidentally ordered online at this one. Parking was rough outside and I had my emergency lights on in the alley on the side while quickly picking up my order. Once entering the building, the venue was all the way in the back on the other side of where I parked. So after about a minute of walking, I finally reached. My order was ready for pickup. Inside was small and cozy, but plenty of seats to dine in if needed. I had designed my own salad with arugula, lemon/mint vinaigrette, goat cheese, dried cranberries, black lentils, apples, toasted almonds, and cilantro lime brown rice. Of course bread included. The little piece of bread included is really good, and seems to be fresh rosemary. My salad was amazing! One of the best I have had so far. It had cheese, it had greens, it had fruit, it had crunch, it had tang, and it had sweetness. Overall amazing combo, although I was bit curious/skeptical on how the flavors would all come together. As I was walking out, the cashier accused me of not paying for the salad. I told him I paid and resumed walking out; he again approached me to ask me to pay and would not allow me to leave. Ordered catering from here last week and it was such a huge hit. I've been to this location plenty of times in person but this was my first time doing catering. It could not have gone more smooth! Everything even arrived a little earlier than our desired time which worked out great! All of their sandwiches were perfect as were all of the salads. I got nervous when placing the order since I know how busy they get but they truly took their time with our order and it showed. I also got a side of cookies for everyone because balance and they were just as good! This is a salad place. They offer salads. If you didn't know, salads are healthy-ish choices for lunch that get exponentially better when you add meat, cheese, fruit, and nuts to them. Here at Mixt, you should probably go with one of the seasonal options (usually very solid), although the Orchard is a winner too because it offers two types of meat (chicken and bacon), cheese (cheddar), fruit (apple), nuts (almonds), AND avocado. If your company is buying, get a cookie too. One of my main issues with Mixt is that when you take a salad out, it comes crammed into a container with absolutely no room left, meaning that it's impossible to toss your salad up without getting all the delicious toppings everywhere. I suppose it is somewhat ironic that one of my main issues with a place called Mixt is that their salads aren't mixed. So what can you say about Mixt Greens? Not much as it turns out. It's really the preeminent salad-as-destination place in the city or at least in FiDi where there's four of them. Truth be told, I've been to this one more than a few times in the past five years since I've been working in the general vicinity. But I have to admit the inevitable long line around noon is a major turn-off, that and the fact that you consequently increase the likelihood of running into former colleagues. I just don't like engaging in useless chit-chat with people who can't help further my career. Does that make me shallow? Of course not. I'm just about keeping it real. Anyway, blame Mixt Greens for my embittered insincerity because that's the type it attracts. Machiavellian wannabe power brokers. Like me. By the way, did I mention that the salads can really add up when you pile all those toppings on? Ka-ching, ka-ching. That's when I began to realize that mixt greens actually refers to the ten- and twenty-dollar bills you have to give up once your handmade creation is done. I always bypass the specialty salads on their menu to design my own because I refuse to be held to somebody else's limited imagination. But my freedom for self-expression comes at a steep price. It only starts at $7.95 for your bed of greens, butter lettuce in my case. Then it costs fifty cents extra for each "staple", a.k.a. cheap bulk stuff like seeds and zucchini, or an extra dollar for each "specialty", a.k.a. the exotic stuff like hearts of palm, or two dollars extra for the "premium specialties" like macadamia nuts and Spanish white anchovies. Add your protein for another two-to-five dollars. Grilled flatiron steak doesn't come cheap. And finally you have fourteen dressings to choose from. Your resulting salad is a study in abundance. If you get out of there for less than $14, you're a better man than me. And how does it taste? Fresh but ultimately quite bland for all your efforts (see photos). But wait, there's a former co-worker I can't stand. No eye contact, no eye contact. I enjoyed a seasonal Fall salad, cleverly called "The Beetnik." They may offer more cold ingredients than Sweetgreen, and importantly, I don't recall avocado being extra (avocado scarcity probz). Anyway, I got butter lettuce, jicama, two types of onions, olives (green) and other good stuff. I had a nice flavor combo going. They also seem to give you a lot of lettuce here. I'm probably SUPPOSED to like Mixt Greens. I mean, I'm vegetarian. I like salads. I like fresh, healthy ingredients. Other people like it. I work in the FiDi. These facts are probably why I've tried them several times, occasionally through the years. But I've come to the conclusion: I don't like Mixt Greens. One of the reasons I don't like these salads is there is too large a volume of greens. Now I realize that their name is Mixt Greens, and thus I should expect a lot of mixed greens. Working in the middle of a busy city can be amazing, but trying to eat lunch in the same 3 hour window as a million other people can be challenging, particularly the more popular places, which this definitely is. I love that you can order online, drop in and grab your salad, which has been on time 100% of the time, and get out. It's especially rewarding on days when the line wraps around and out the door and you can just skip it all! Pro tip: If you do opt to stand in line, get a receipt. They have a rewards app and online purchases don't get added. It would be nice to see this fixed. Another challenge that Mixt seems to overcome with ease is when you pick a super restrictive diet, sometimes it feels like every restaurant is against you. I cannot say I feel this way about Mixt. I can never cope with the lines so the only time I get Mixt salads these days are when they're delivered to my office for lunch meetings. Unfortunately, there's no Mixting going on at all with salads ordered ahead so while all the separate ingredients look pretty atop the greens, they sure don't taste that way (no matter how hard you shake the box). Untossed salads are basically the worst. And they usually leave me sad, and peckish before 2:00PM. But I may have finally cracked the code by designing my own salad as follows: - butter lettuce - cara cara oranges - seasonal apple - walnuts - applewood smoked bacon - edamame + extra ranch dressing (extra dressing is key!) With this salad, I didn't end up munching mouthful after mouthful of dry lettuce like I usually do with take away Mixt salads and those cara cara oranges (three cheers for seasonal produce!) really sealed the deal. ROYALE SANDWICH $12 The steak strips are cooked just right (about medium) and sit well between sourdough bread with mixed greens stuff inside. I love this sandwich for it's consistency and contrast in flavors when you introduce the spicy mustard sauce. I think you can improve your experience by getting a balsamic vinaigrette, because this pairs so much better with the salad. I get tired of the spicy mustard kind of quickly outside of the sandwich. It's an expensive sandwich, so I eat there maybe once a month. Heard about their protein salads being a little too nutty, but I haven't tried them yet, and I don't go too often. Decided to eat healthy one day but can't say that my taste buds were completely satisfied. I had the Falaf salad which contained mixed greens, avocado, grapes, cucumbers, falafel crumbs, chickpeas, and lemon tahini vinaigrette. In the name of efficiency (which seems like the right fit for such an efficient place) may I submit the following: line, options, price, conclusion. The Line. Yes, there's going to be a line. And yes, it's going to hurt your brain to think about it. But it moves quickly enough. Still, a place with efficiency and zero line is probably better, but this is SF where only the quick survive at lunchtime. And they're not only surviving, they're thriving. The Options. There are a bunch of pre-designed salads and a handful of sandwiches you can just order by name. That's what I did, and I got a nice mix of greens, chicken, sweet potatoes, apples, cheese, Brussels sprouts, and a few other mixins. But if you're feeling creative, go ahead and design your own from the bottom up. There are bajillions of things to mix in, from meats to veggies. They throw it all in a big bowl, get all tongy with it, and mix it up. It will look massive, whichever direction you go. The Price. It seems steep to me. Granted, your salad is gigantic. But let's be real, you're paying a hefty price for the luxury of having all those options (someone has to prep all of that each day) and a large staff of bowl mixers to take you one by one down the line. When you're dropping $15 on a salad, you're paying top dollar. The Conclusion. Hey Mr. Fancypants salad eater, live a little. Why not come here once in a while to remind yourself that salad isn't horrible? And get creative with it. I think you have to try new things, and there are endless permutations out there to try. I was in SF for a couple days for a conference/summit and met up with a friend for lunch. After going to the truck stop and noticing the long lines and limited selection, he told me that we should go to Mixt Greens as it was just the best! So basically it's a fancy salad place that you can either order a menu salad or make your own combinations. There is someone that's designated to make your salad once you order. They make it in front of you which is similar to what we have at work. They ask you if you want light, medium, or heavy dressing and well I asked for Light on my Siam Salad. But wow...light is actually pretty heavy in my case. Anyway I digress. I ordered the Siam Salad with the additional $2 for the spicy tofu as well as a Peach infused green tea. It all came out to about $15. Also they'll ask if you want bread. This comes for free so just say yes! There's seating inside and also a bunch of tables outside. We chose outside as it was a lovely day. Also you can choose to have water as they have a self serve water where the utensils and napkins are inside. So I dug into my salad and it was quite light. But a bit lacking in spices or flavor to be honest. I wanted to be wowed but it was just like a pretty salad with no substance. It's like seeing the really handsome guy and then when you start talking to them they pretty much have the IQ of a peanut. Wait...that gives peanuts a bad name...anyway you get the picture. Then someone throws out that she's a vegetarian and all of a sudden the vote went for greens. Dang! Nothing about a salad excites me. Sure, as part of the meal but for the entire meal?
