Tables were finishing up and the restaurant was emptying out but when we left there was a huge line at the door. I don't know if they were letting the kitchen catch up or what. When we first sat down our waiter seemed distracted and in a bad mood. Everyone has an off day so we didn't think too much of it. He took our drink orders and we received our drinks quickly. When we went to order we both had planned on brunch. It was our fault that we missed that brunch is only served on the weekends, but this is where things really went wrong. The waiter was irritated that we asked him to come back. He seemed to have forgotten to come back as we sat for about a half hour before he came back. Both of our drinks were empty and we still hadn't ordered. Finally we ordered and got more drinks. The food came and I had ordered the carne asada tacos. I took one bite and knew I was in trouble. The meat was so chewy that I couldn't break it down. After chewing for what felt like an eternity, I had a choice to make. Spit it out or swallow it whole. I made the decision to swallow and then began a near choking experience. To be fair I have issues with my esophagus so I am known to eat very dainty bites. But I literally had to force myself to vomit this up in the restroom. The waiter came back and didn't even inquire as to why someone would eat just one bite of food. You would think that he would ask if I didn't like it or something. I'm not sure what was going on with that meat but it was inedible. The waiter was rude and not attentive. We thought a drink by the water sounded great. Para Maria is just across the street from a waterfront spot that is very popular, so they don't have unobstructed water views, but we knew the water was there. And on a hot summer day in mid-August, they had the big garage doors open to the outside. It felt like we were somewhere beautiful and relaxing on vacation. We took two seats at their very large bar (which was not very busy at all on a Friday in the afternoon) and ordered a couple of drinks. Mine was their Picosita (Lalo Tequila, Ancho Reyes, Mango, Jalapeno, and Tajin rim), which was perfect for a summer day. I'd love to return with a group, because their margarita pitchers come in lots of flavors/styles (classic, strawberry, lychee, guava, coconut, and spicy), and that would be a great thing to share with friends on the patio of the bar. We didn't eat on this occasion, but I'd be happy to return for more drinks and maybe a bite to eat next time!

They were served in an appropriate amount of time, we perfectly cooked, and topped with a pickle, and served on a Hawaiian roll. As it was hot and busy, I just went with an Ice Tea - my friends went with adult libations with no complaints, and the same with their apps. The bartender apologized that things were slow coming from the kitchen as they had a surprise Health Inspection and that slowed things down. It was not that long, and it was a busy day in Boston. The staff were so attentive and funny. In busy times, that helps. I think the people next to us made such a fuss, they were gun shy. It was all good and busy as one would expect with the Tall Ships in Town.

I got the rack of lamb, and another person in the party got a steak medium. Well my lamb came out and it was well-done and so was the other steak. We asked for them to re-cook our dishes and after look at what was prepared the staff agreed that it was definitely well-done. When my lamb came out it was rare, and the steak came out still mooing. I asked for the manager, who came out and I honestly felt like he thought we were being too needy (well, if I am going to be spending $700+ on a meal I kind of want what I ordered, so my bad). I told him I was too hungry for them to re-fire my food, but the steak had to be re-cooked because it was frankly far too raw. He came back 10 or so minutes later with a new steak, and I am not sure how this is possible but it was even more raw than the last time. The waitress was super embarrassed and the manager came out again and said he would comp some of the dishes, which was nice but extremely disappointing. We got some comped desserts which was nice of them, but too little too late. I am not entirely sure how you can call yourself a steakhouse but can't cook steaks? A little misleading if you ask me. The seating, copper details and huge faux cherry blossom tree really make the room. Our waitress, was all smiles when she came over and recommended the Painkiller, which immediately reminded me of being on a Caribbean vacation. I really enjoyed it. My wife had the 50/50 Martini, which officially jumped to second place on her list of best martinis in the city. For food, we shared the Wagyu Beef Sliders, Mini Tuna Tacos, Calamari and Truffle Fries. The sliders were probably the weakest for me. The meat tasted a little plain, and some extra sauce or being offered condiments would have helped. The truffle fries had a mix of crispy and softer fries, which I actually enjoy. The calamari was delicious with its creamy dipping sauce. The Mini Tuna Tacos were easily my favorite. Fresh tuna with a light, crispy shell and plenty of flavor. I'd order those again without thinking twice. Service was where the experience fell short. After our food arrived, our waitress didn't check on us again until we were basically finished. With barely any customers in the restaurant at the time, I expected the service to be more attentive. I would have ranked this spot higher, but the overall service could definitely improve. Also, random honorable mention for the restroom. The oyster shell wallpaper is such a cool detail. I notice things like that, and it fit the space perfectly. Overall, Amber Road is a beautiful restaurant with good food and drinks. There's a lot to like here, but the service kept the experience from being as good as it could have been.
