This is one of the best New England oyster bar in Boston. It is highly recommended by many people. Depending on the time you decide to go, there will likely be a huge line up and the wait can be over an hour (plan accordingly). The atmosphere is elegant - a quintessential New England oyster bar. A surprising dish that I enjoyed was the johnnycake, a dish that harkens back to European settlers. It was capped with smoked salmon tartare and a thimbleful of California sturgeon caviar and then saturated with melted honey butter. It's an appetizer that taste like dessert. We also got a platter of oyster, clams, crab claws and uni. As you would expect, it was fresh. It was like tasting the ocean. The clam chowder was rich and flavourful. The scallop sashimi was also very fresh. The standout was the clambaked lobster. It is a little messy to eat, but it is one of the best clambaked lobster I have ever had. This is one of the few places even locals don't seem to say is overhyped. As visitors from SF, this is the one place my friend and I were determined to go to no matter what and make time for. We got in line behind ~15-20 people around 11:20am on a Thursday and got seated in the first wave of people to be let in when they opened at 11:30! Super glad we didn't have to wait 2 hours which seems to be the norm on weekends. The oysters are amazing. The sauces they give you with the oysters are delicious. But the $29 lobster roll is definitely the prize. We got them warm with butter (cold with mayo didn't sound so good..) About halfway through I actually thought to myself that there was TOO MUCH LOBSTER. When does anyone ever think that?! I've never had a lobster roll where I thought there was SO MUCH LOBSTER. Best dinner in Boston! We couldn't score a table here Saturday night but got in on Monday around 5:30 with a 15 minute wait. Good thing we did cause then the wait went up to two hours by the time we were seated at 6pm. We ordered the Cioppino and the New England Clam bake. Both were amazingly delicious. If you have the room in your stomach, ask for some bread to some up the sauce. If you want to get seated right away I recommend getting there by 10:30 am!!! We arrived at 10:45 am and we were already the 10th person waiting. By the time the restaurant opened the line was around the corner! The place is very small and it seats about 50 (more or less) people inside. The quality of food is great and fresh. If you get there early enough you will be able to see the truck unloading all the fresh oysters. We had Clam Chowder which was made to perfection! It's like no other that I've had. We also tried several different types of oysters and cold shrimp (I wasn't a fan) and the famous Lobster Roll. Sooo delicious but it is a $30 I had never tried a lobster roll and I was told that the thing to try when you're visiting Boston and so we did. Boy was my tummy happy! so Delicious. I honestly wish I could give no stars to Neptune Oyster. I had read a Food and Wine article about the best sandwiches in the US and it recommended Neptune for the lobster roll. Unfortunately, I strongly recommended we try them because we had friends in town visiting. We were not even able to be seated after putting in our name at 4:30 in the afternoon and were told that we would be seated in about 2 1/2 hours, possibly early because we were a table of 7 and that there was only one large party ahead of us. We had to go and confront the hostess about our wait at 7pm and 8 pm, and how it seemed other large groups had been seated before us. She ignored/ran away from us and then acted patronizing when we voiced our concerns. The way the situation was handled was incredibly upsetting. The hostess, at the point of issue, should have gotten the manager involved to handle our situation and didn't. I will not be returning to Neptune and highly suggest, until they can handle issues better, that others do not patronize this establishment. read more

It's only been there for fourteen years, but you'd think it had always been there forever. It is everything you want in a seafood restaurant, white tile floors, cool marble bar, huge wine list, and some of the most delicious seafood with an Italian twist that I've had in quite awhile. We had some buttery oysters which were gorgeous. They have a huge selection ranging from big to small and briny to buttery, so there is something for everyone. Also had shrimp cocktail which are ordered by the piece and not too small or big, but just right. Crisp, not soft. I think the menu is very accessible and has something for everyone. We had the North End Cioppino which is slightly different than what I'm used to with a bit of a spicy kick and served with rice, but delicious nonetheless. It came packed with shrimp, fish, clams, mussels, and we added lobster. Also had the Chatham Blue Mussels with calabrese sausage and toasted garlic which we couldn't stop eating. And the lobster spaghettini which is the Monday special is something I could eat every day. The wine list is extensive and the staff knows what they're serving. They also have beer. A lot of locals come through as well as tourists. You'll find a line forming before it opens at 1130a and in my opinion the best seats are at the bar, but be prepared for a small wait unless you time it just right. A must try in Boston for their seafood. Located right in front of the Freedom Trail, this a good place to make a pit stop for lunch after walking so much. In order to avoid having to wait hours for a table, I would highly recommend getting in line before they open. If not, expect to wait a few hours. You can leave your phone number on a list and they will call you when you're next in line. They also do not take reservations, so getting in line is the only way to get a table. We ordered the Oysters and Lobster Roll. Oysters were very fresh and they have a huge variety from different regions. For the lobster roll, there are two options. Hot or cold, we opted for the hot since it was very cold the day we went. The lobster roll had a lot of meat and also came with fries on the side. The lobster meat was very soft and juicy. We also ordered a few clams, but I was not a big fan of them in terms of what you get. The seafood here was very fresh and flavorful. Probably one of the best lobster rolls I've ever had. And I had some oysters and some clam chowder too. And I lucked out on a cold wintery day where there were only a few diners, so no waiting for me. But even if I had to wait for a bit, I would definitely come back again for some more lobster rolls. This is honestly the worst service and experience I have ever had in my life. We, a party of 3, entered the restaurant after 1 hour waiting and was seated at a 6 person table. 10 minutes later, another party of 3 was seated at our table. 5 minutes later, the server went to attend the 3 people that sat 10 minutes later than us. I spoke up and said we were here first. As the restaurant was busy, I thought it was an honest mistake. However, the words that I got were: "You sit down and be quiet. I am in the middle of taking an order. I will come to you when I'm done." This was not the answer I expected, maybe an apology would've made appeased my mind. However, we brought a guest who just landed from her international flight, and after waiting in line for so long, could not go find a different restaurant to eat. We ordered 6 dishes, each time, the food in the plates were thrown to us. The attitude the server showed to us during the whole meal was aggressive. After done eating, I left a note and gave 0.00 tip, saying I cannot tip. After I walked out of the restaurant, I was notified that I was charged $35, which was 20% of our bill, that I did not authorize the restaurant. I went back to the restaurant to talk about this transaction, asking if I could talk to the owner or manager. And if there are any explanations I need to make. One of the people came to talk to me, and I was saying I just couldn't leave a tip. All of the sudden, our server confronted me and said I was rude to her. I asked her why, and she said I interrupted her and talked over people. We took our conversation outside and these two people were yelling at me, and saying "here in America, ...", and "you're not welcome here". As a "non-white" person, I found these remarks are extremely racist. Honestly, this is the worst experience I have ever had while living in the United States, and if you're not white, maybe you should reconsider going to this restaurant. read more

We waited roughly 30 minutes to get to the front of the line just to get in to this small establishment. When we got to the front of the line, the hostess asked us if wanted a small table in the back (of the restaurant). She knew there were 3 in our party, so I thought to myself that the back of the restaurant would NOT have the nice view out the front windows, so that's why she asked. No. That is not what she meant at all. But without knowing what she really meant, we agreed to take the 'small table in the back'. When we got there, it was literally a table barely big enough for 2 people that was in the back corner of the restaurant, which had a bench seat on it. Therefore, one of us had to sit in the corner section of the bench. This silly hostess sat two six foot - four inch men plus my wife in that tiny little table. After waiting that long, I was really disappointed at the poor seating arrangement and I was very uncomfortable the entire meal. We ordered 3x Lobster Rolls (hot with butter) and the Octopus. I had heard good things about both of them. I was not wrong. The Lobster Roll was fantastic. Huge amount of lobster, good tasting brioche roll, just the right amount of butter, and all cooked perfectly. Lobster Roll $38. Octopus $22. But the highlight was the Octopus. If you like seafood, you must have this. It was just amazing. It comes topped with two kinds of sauces and a medley of cauliflowers. Their chef is just a genius. This is something really special. Alright, a friend told me to come here so I did! I was visiting Boston for the weekend. I was near the wharf, the Boston Public Market this little spot is across the street from it. With 4.5 stars on yelp, what could go wrong?! Well, I don't know how many staff they normally have but they were VERY busy. It was a Monday afternoon around lunch time and people were lined up outside the door! I get to the front to ask about the waiting period for 4 of us. My name was placed on a piece of paper and I was going to get a phone call once a table frees up. 45 minutes because 1hr 20 minutes for four. We ordered two lobster rolls because I had to have it! One with greens (1$ extra) the other with fries. The lobster roll did not disappoint though. It was piled high with lobster meat and wasn't overly seasoned or sauced up. The buttery flavor of the roll which was toasted to perfection was a great addition. The bread was French like? Buttery of course but hefty enough to handle the meat but light and fluffy all the same. The fries were cooked to perfection and salted well enough. Good portion so I split it with my friend! 31$ for a lobster roll is not cheap. Elsewhere, it's $18-22 at most in other areas. Also ordered the sampler which was a mixture of raw seafood (lobster ceviche/ crab salad/ clams/ oysters/ mussels with lemon wedges and horseradish for dipping for 75$). Everything was worth the wait. The food did taste great and I was eyeing other people's plates all smelt wonderful! The only thing I didn't enjoy was the wait. There's no seating area so after You put your name, go take a walk and wait for that call. However, I personally saw a man who was there much later than another gentleman get seated first. I also saw a local come in and was recognized by one of the staff behind the bar and was seated and served before myself and another group who was there first. Just like the other guy, my wait was long and I think it's even harder for a big group. The bar is good for single or double occupancy but anything more, you have to wait for the table unless you don't mind seating separately. The staff though, were nice and patient. Soooo goooood! My boyfriend and I were in town for the weekend and knew to expect a wait since we didn't know they don't take reservations and couldn't get in last time! But the wait was worth it. We grabbed a drink nearby while we waited. Eventually we were seated at the bar, which was pretty neat because you can see the fresh oysters being shucked. I'd never ordered oysters like this (tallying how many of each type we wanted), and we thought it was so neat. And the descriptions are fun and helpful even if you're not an oyster pro! The lobster roll was the best I've had... all that weekend, and everywhere/anywhere else. Typically I see the cold lobster roll more readily available (i like those too), but this hot buttered lobster roll was just so damn good I want to cry remembering it. We also tried the oyster piggybacks, which were like little sliders of pulled pork topped with fried oyster--these were good and I'm glad we tried them, but probs don't need to get them again. The tuna tartar was a better bet, so fresh and melts in your mouth. My boyfriend has the squid ink risotto, which was also 10/10. They do NOT skimp on any seafood--it was loaded with a ton of juicy lobster. The flavor was unlike anything I've had. Just decadent. Oh, and we never felt rushed.
