Hallelujah! The west side is slowly but surely catching up with the rest of the world. If you're a fan of Enroute Coffee then you're probably already aware of The new Penny Cafe. It's the newest addition to their sister shop in Goodyear. While Enroute is a coffee and tea spot with a bit of sweets/baked goods; New Penny is open for breakfast and lunch while also adding all the coffee, specialty drinks, goodies and more from Enroute. The cafe is easily accessible right off the 10 with plenty of parking. It is shared with a sports complex, Dutch Bros, Taproom and a few more. I loved that it sat in the corner of the lot where the sun shines in to its large glass windows in the morning. The location is large, open and broken up into different areas depending on what you might be into. When I walked in with a friend today we were greeted with smiles, offered menus to look over before ordering at the counter. I loved the glass case with all the baked goodies and such. To the right of the counter is a cozy sitting area with chairs and high tables. This area is specifically for 16 and older. So a great spot to work or have a chat with a friend over coffee. To your left is larger tables and chairs for dining in and enjoying your meal or drinks with your entire family or friends with kids. Nearby is a section of local made items to support other local artists. There are handbags, shirts, cups, jewelry and more. One of my favorites of the stop was the patio. Unfortunately for me it was windy and cold today so we opted for inside. The patio area is large and so bright and colorful. I decided to order a few things since it was my first time trying the food. I knew the coffee would be good as I've had it so many times. I ordered a new drink today called the Mojave Vanilla Bean. It is made with house brown sugar and vanilla bean syrup. I ordered a large which I forgot was HUGE....so I had to take most of it home to the fridge for later. Food wise I ordered the açaí bowl and the sausage egg and cheese croissant. I was given a number and told they'd bring it out to me. My drink was made quickly and I picked that up at the counter. Delicious! The coffee came through without being overpowered with too much syrup or milk. My food soon followed and wow. Most people would say I ordered too much, but I say, let's get started ha ha . Both were plated well . The breakfast sandwich was so good! Croissant warm, but not over toasted, sausage had good flavor, egg cooked perfectly and cheese melted. So good! My açaí bowl looked good, topped with hemp hearts, a little peanut butter and honey drizzle as well as the usual blueberries, banana and granola. The peanut butter was a welcome addition as o dont usually include that in my bowls. I ate every single bite of it. 10/10 and would come beck just for that. My friend had her son with her and she ordered the strawberry shortcake for him and the split personality for herself. It included two biscuits with sausage gravy on one and the other with strawberry reduction and whip cream. She also picked up a little cake in a cup, coffee for her and the kids funfetti frappe. Unfortunately my friend was unhappy with her food. She enjoyed the coffee, but the biscuits were dry and hard. Very over cooked and not fluffy, flaky or even moist. I tried a bite of her sons strawberry shortcake and I was not a fan. Not sure if it was just an off day, but They were awful. I imagine shortcake being flavorful, soft, and sweet....definitely not this. This was the only negative for me on this visit. Service was fantastic. Vibe..awesome. Supporting local, my favorite. Even the bathroom was well thought out and designed. Cool instagram worthy light, nice wallpaper and mirrors to touch up makeup after washing your hands. We were looking for a place to have breakfast at and saw this place had a good eating but it was such a waste of money we $50+ on biscuits and gravy, kids tenders and hamburger w fries. The biscuit and gravy was the worst, they don't taste good at all and don't even look appealing. The food runners let the food sit for about 15 minutes waiting for the rest of our order which is not a good idea when I got my food the biscuits and gravy and avocado toast it was cold! I watched my food sit there for 15 mins yes I watched the time. And I sent back the biscuits and gravy and got a new order still not good. The burger was decent but we have had better. The place its self was very cool I saw many people on their computers or having meetings and it seems the drinks are the only good thing this place offers. Visiting my "vanilla " daughter who lives in AZ. This is one of her favorite places. So many unique dishes and drinks to choose from. Local artisans have items there to purchase. Service very friendly and welcoming. Food came out timely, hot. Fresh, correct and delicious. We got chai latte, decaf coffee and a cinnamon dolce latte with our meals and git the cold drinks to go. Used the bathroom facilities and so clean. I loved the little message on back of the door (You Are Beautiful). Thank you so much for a unique delicious experience. read more

We visited on a Saturday, mid-morning, and they were pretty busy. We were able to place our order and found some seating in their large dining area. Really nice space, spotless and with really tasteful decor. Perfect spot to bring the family. After waiting a bit, they call out your number and you pick up your order at the counter. I ordered a breakfast Sammie (The BecKY sandwich) and an eggnog latte. The latte was excellent, the sandwich was just okay... didn't wow me. It needed some sliced tomato or something for color. I appreciate how thoroughly the bacon was cooked (hubby calls it "line drive bacon", ha ha). We look forward to returning and trying some additional menu items. I came here to meet with a friend to catch up, I ordered a burrito and she got an açaí bowl. Half way into my friend eating her açaí bowl, she noticed MOLD ON THE BLUEBERRIES. We immediately brought it to their attention and they did not do anything about it. They took the bowl away and there was no answers, apology, or solution to a refund of any sort. I love the ambience you get and how the inside is set up with the patio on the side. I also like the area where there's no kids allowed great idea. The food on the other hand was not as expected. The biscuits and gravy was not tasty. The chicken biscuit is actually chicken sausage so be mindful of that. We thought we were getting a piece of fried chicken, but the BB sandwich was great. Absolutely AMAZING food here! Portion sizes are incredible and the quality of food was top notch! So far my favorite is the BLVD Burrito with the Cucumber Lemonade. The food and drink options are endless so check out the menu before making your way there. When you come in, you will order your food and be given a number. The food is usually served directly to your table and the drinks are usually called out for you to pick up at the counter. There are a lot of seating options but this place definitely gets busy and can fill up fast. You can have the option to sit inside or on the patio. This place is a hidden gem and easy to miss. They have a nice selection of frozen fruit bowls (açaí, mango, etc) with a wide selection of toppings. Overall nothing stands out. The French toast is just basic white bread. Wide selection of coffees, tea, and juices. If you like any of those, there is something for you. I've been here twice and the drinks have been on the sweet side. I will ask for less pumps/sugar. We stumbled on this place while staying just down the street at the Homewood Suites during a recent trip out this way for the Decadence music festival. Located in the Boulevard development (which is just getting underway), this place really overperformed in my opinion as a counter serve breakfast and lunch place. The first day we grabbed a couple drinks and really enjoyed them (plus, they are honeslty probably CHEAPER than going with a large franchise like Starbucks). The next day we were in the area we drove over and had brunch here. I had the biscuits and gravy and my wife got one of their breakfast sandwiches. Both were absolutely delicious and reasonably priced, especially given that the portion size was reasonably generous. Added bonus, 1 hour of free electric car charging on the first level of the Boulevard garage. If we are out in the area again, we'll surely come here if we need a breakfast/brunch or coffee. read more

It was presented nicely and was fresh, but all 7 of us were unhappy w our food. It just missed the mark. The avocado toast, it wasn't seasoned, it was bland and the hot honey wasn't good on it. We got another toast w goat cheese and walnuts, that also had hot honey and was not a winner either. Got an everything bagel w jalapeño bacon cream cheese and the cream cheese was not liked by anyone. Got the 'most loved' sandwich on the menu and it was super basic and dry. I ordered a London fog and it was watery/weak. No vanilla or lavender flavor. The iced dirty chais were watery as well. The black coffee was nothing special. We all left disappointed. read more

Love this place! Such a vibe! I came across this cafe while cutting through the parking lot to get to another coffee shop and I'm so glad I stopped. I expressed it was my first visit and got great recommendations. I love their Iced Chai and their pastries but their bagel's are amazing! The gal that handed me my items also included two chocolate chip cookies on the house which were deliciously warm and fresh. I now visit this cafe 1-2 times a week because of their customer service. The gal taking the order did not ask if I wanted it toasted and unfortunately, I just assumed that would not happen - who toasts a croissant anyway! The turkey was too salty and the sandwich is served with tater tots that are also super salty! I do not recommend ordering this for your kid! Rude employees! I had to buy two different sauces before i got the one i had asked for. When i finally got the sauce, the containers were barely filled half way. Horrible customer service, the girl taking our order cut everyone off when they spoke. They were upset i sent my drink back when they gave me the wrong milk. and exchanged looks and laughs at me. they stared at me and my family for the rest of our meal. i do not recommend this place unless you want to be treated like an animal. and be prepared to be stuck in long conversations outside with Jehovah witnesses and people asking for money. This is my favorite cafe in the Avondale area. Safe is super friendly and on it, delicious drinks (I love their iced chia latte and the PB&J protein smoothie. I'll preface by saying the food is... good. Not spectacular or mind blowing, but good. Ordered the Cubano and Monsoon Lotus through DD. Overall, the Cubano is well balanced with flavors, the ham and pork well seasoned, moist, tender (not juicy). The brioche bun is soft, and the pickle cuts through the richness of the meat and buttery bread. Clean bites. The cheese is lacking. With everything else going on, it is overshadowed and hardly comes through in the experience. I strongly believe this sandwich is in need of a sauce. Despite the harmony of meats going on, it feels dry. It would benefit strongly from an aioli of some kind, dijon mustard, something. I found myself reaching for the Monsoon Lotus quite frequently to parch the thirst. This drink was refreshing, and slightly citrusy as described with the prickly pear taking front and center. Definitely woke me up! The Penny Potatoes could've used some extra love in the form of seasoning. Despite this, they were crispy, soft on the inside, solid tater tots. The highlight of this experience was definitely the Monsoon Lotus. The food was good. Will return and try something else next time. read more

So I'll start by saying I could be a little biased towards New Penny Cafe as I am a huge fan of their other business EnRoute (check out my review on that! It is a coffee/tea shop that was created by some of the owners of New Penny Cafe) Now that that's out of the way, let's start with this review. New Penny Cafe just had a soft opening- so what we had today is only the beginning... I can only imagine they are going to get so much better! They are women owned and a small business in Avondale boulevard, which it looks like a place that is kind of up-and-coming with different businesses. They have a limited menu (for now) of coffee, smoothies, brunch and lunch food and pastries. And I cannot forget their energy drinks AKA Lotuses, which are always my favorite. I had the monsoon Lotus, which is prickly pear and melon drink. If you haven't tried a lotus- it is an energy drink, many can be made sugar-free, and they don't have that fake flavor aftertaste or the energy drink "crash". For food, I ordered the split personality biscuits and gravy (one has gravy while the other one had a strawberry jam). That just hit the spot as I was wanting something savory but also something sweet that filled me up, but I didn't want to feel too stuffed. We also tried the Avo or avocado toast, and that was great as well. The place was packed, but the orders were coming out very quickly, and it's such a lovely spot that you just sit there and enjoy the atmosphere. They have outdoor sitting, which was pet friendly!
