I am obsessed with Greek food. Especially with more traditional leanings/origins. Opa is so cute, a little rundown but that seems to be part of its charm. Various different settings throughout the restaurant and patios for all types. Live music seems to be pretty frequent, an interesting duo was playing. Came here not especially hungry but needing a snack. Got the tzatziki shareable and a Greek salad. The tzatziki and pita and cucumbers were perfect. The tomatoes were a little mushy. The Greek salad left a lot to be wanted. Too many mushy tomatoes, not enough feta cheese. Will be back as the gyros looked unreal. Just don't get a Greek salad. read more

How in the world have I never reviewed Opa?!?!? I've never tried their food, but it's 5 stars for their happy hour and atmosphere. Happy hour is all day on Sunday and 3-7 every other day which is perfect because most places in the city end their happy hour at or before 6. The stars of the happy hour are 1/2 off all glasses of wine if the bottle has been open and $4 sangrias #winning As for atmosphere they have a great indoor area for meetings or studying, and a fantastic patio with chair swings which is perfect for a date. read more

I waited 50 minutes for a Gyro and Salad to go! When I went up and asked what was going on they offered no explanation and there was zero line. That really sucks. Cute spot! However, bartender seemed miserable. No smile, just quick transactions with customers. I asked for a coffee with a shot of baileys.. $12. I asked nicely are you sure you charged me for a shot of baileys and not a full pour? She said yeap. I was taken back. So far this whole weekend in Austin that was the priciest "drink" I've purchased. My martini downtown cost 12 bucks and it was straight vodka. I sat at the bar for ten minutes before being served.... Mind you there were 4 people in this place! That's right 4! Cute spot! Very classic coffee shop in style with tables and leather couches. They also have a rather large outdoor patio that seems really lovely but it was way to hot so we opted to stay inside. Opa's offers a good variety of classic Greek, light far such as hummus plate with pizza and veggies as well as a grape leaves dish with what looked like a yogurt sauce for dipping. I tried their sangria and it was pretty okay- It tasted a bit watered down but maybe it was an off day. It's a local fave and popular spot for good reason- it was a great place to hangout and enjoy an hour. read more

This has been on my list for awhile and I never really had the chance to stop by. I thought of it as a cute, laid-back spot for a Sunday night date. The outdoor patio is lovely and I love how eclectic this place is: inside it's like a coffee house/wine bar and outdoors you can drink, etc, listen to live music, etc. We came for the wine - 1/2 off open glasses of wine and 10% off wine bottles and shared a bottle of Malbec. I go here for the beautiful outdoor dining area, and for the Mediterranean cuisine. It is always delicious! Wine specials are offered, which is discounted pricing on bottles that are already open. This moves bottles, so there won't be leftovers going wasted at the end of the day. It moves me to try wines that I might not ask for. The food is high quality, well prepared, and well seasoned. I usually order a kabob, which comes with rice, and Greek type salad mix of cucumbers, tomatoes, and herbs. The hummus is fabulous, as is the pita. read more

Falafel is a hard thing to get right. It's got to be fresh and not too dry. I got a delicious falafel panini here for lunch and it was delightful with bits of tomato and bell pepper giving it an extra zing. When I lived in Austin, I passed by this place a lot and always thought, "I should try that place!" Of course, it took me moving away and coming back for a visit to finally give it a shot. I went with a group and we ordered a bunch of different things so we could try as many things as possible. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious and I'm looking forward to going back! My favorites were the Greek souvlaki skewers and the baked feta. The baked feta is a must try! The only Thing that prevented me from giving this place the full five stars was the seating. Inside is pretty tight, so we sat outside and the picnic style table wouldn't be my first choice. Smaller parties will definitely have more seating options. Stunning, gorgeous couples, laughing with their beautiful teeth, the sun shining off their dazzling hair, the glimmer of hope still in their wide and magnificent eyes. Maybe that's why I felt out of place. Was it my purple hair? All the tattoos and constant stream of curse words? The Lone Star beer, instead of sparkling white wine? The chain smoking? The scowl on my face? Whatever it was, it made for a great afternoon. Perry H's wedding to his brand new, shiny, beautiful bride, and day drinking with a few yelp people. We laughed until we cried. I have to say, I've been here two or three times before, and everything was fine. Service was great, they let us taste a few wines before deciding, and I learned how to play chess. Then the other night, I'm sitting at the bar waiting for my friend, and the bartender (Josh, as I later discovered), totally ignored me. I waited. And waited. Finally my friend comes in and we wait some more. He wasn't busy. Or doing anything, He was just directly avoiding eye contact or any thing I said to him. Jerk. Then some girl comes up to the bar with this guy and Joshy boy perks right up. He grabs some wine, pours them glasses, they get friendly. WTF. Then the girl goes behind the bar and starts hugging on him, and I'm like 'Oh, he's trying to have sex with her. There's no way we're ever getting served." So we left. Probably not ever going back. We waited at least 10 minute and the guy never even acknowledged our presence. But we did finally get him to look at us when my friend walked right up in his face and said "What's your name?". Then the guy goes, "Uuhhhhhhh.... Josh". And sticks his hand out, like he's making a new friend or something. Idiot. We went to House Wine, which was amazing as always. As much fun as I had at Opa before, I will not be back. Service was terrible, and that girl going behind the bar was a health code violation. This patio was made for Austin. With it's huge (shedding!) tree, it's swings, it's large spool tables and picanic tables, and it's reggae music, you can really relax and appreciate this little oasis in a sea of traffic. This patio was made for meetin friends, old and new. It's huge and accommodating to a large group of gals, hen party as my hubby calls it, all laughin and yakkin (or squawking). It was ideal for conversation until they turned off the radio (boo!) and started live music, which I honestly coulda done without. By then HH was about over anyway and it was time for this cheap ass to leave. This patio was made for drinkin. Opa has a huge wine selection and great prices for HH (some of those I wouldn't want to pay full price for, i.e. SinZin for $9 a glass??? Really??). I found the HH system a bit odd tho. It's half off all opened bottles by the glass and $1 off unopened bottles. When I got there, they had a measley 3 whites and 4 reds open. Not alot of choices. But as the night progressed more bottles were opened and we had more half off choices. I kinda felt bad for the poor schmucks that paid the higher price for an unopened bottle just so all the rest of us could get the same wine half off. However it works, I had an uncountable amount of wine (hey! I was there from 3-10!) and a $12 appetizer plate all for $40. I think this was more a result of the guys behind the bar losing track, but I'll take it however I can get it! This place was made for divulging secrets. With the wine flowing generously and the wind whispering in the leaves, I learned some stuff, like one of my grrls is in love and moving far away soon and one grrl got a brand new tattoo and one has had a very alternative lifestyle, even alternativer than me! And then of course there was the beauty secrets that were shared as is expected at such a gathering. This patio was made for romance. I was making Holly P's dog super jealous with all the huggin that was goin on, and then there was the flirting with Ms Tara M, the eye contact across the table, the little touches on the arm, the innuendos and eyebrow raises, all while she's being dragged all over by her two dogs. Which means this patio was made for dogs too! I wouldn't bring my oversized velcro-haired mutt right now, unless I wanted to single handedly repopulate a forrest of great oaks in my car or in my house, but there were numerous dogs of all sizes and coats enjoying the evening with their humans. Despite some service glitches (food, *cheese plates!*, took forever to get out, the guys behind the bar kinda clueless about the food, didn't know what kind of cheese they served, wasn't sure what the moussaka had in it {do they even make it in house?? the baklava they ship in}, also there's a bit of communication issues too as they got a little snippy with me about the HH discount clarification), despite all that, I would definitely come back. This place kinda sucks... This pseudo bar, cafe, restaurant tries to do all three and falls short on each one. The menu is quite limited with only a handful of food options. Yeah they serve coffee and its ok. And they have drinks but nothing special. The atmosphere is strangely nice and off-putting at the same time. The inside is nice and cozy but a strange awkward air seems to loom about the guests and staff. The outdoor patio is pretty cool and large but is quickly diminished by the noisy traffic of Lamar... The service is bad, which is something I rarely complain about. The staff act pretty cold and act like they're doing you a favor. This one guy looks and acts like your typical jersey shore guido tool... Bottom-Line: nothing here that some place doesn't do better read more

If Opa! was a contestant on the Bachelor, it would not win the first impression rose. I'm hoping I caught them on an off night, but everything was wrong. The valet (which is complimentary, but mandatory) was so overwhelmed when I pulled up that I thought maybe it was going to be packed inside, but they were only a third full. I sat myself down on the big couch towards the back, and thank god another customer suggested I move, because there was massive construction going on right behind the plywood wall behind the couch. A few minutes after I moved, all the banging going on behind the wall, caused a few things to fall onto the couch. Seems highly dangerous while customers are in there. After a drill or hammer went through the wall, an employee "fixed it" by taping a sheet of paper over it. I finally caught up with my girlfriend and got a glass of wine, which was perfectly fine. We sat and talked. Well, talked as much as we could over the loud construction. After about 30 minutes, we were both pouring down sweat. While I appreciate the heat when it is only 40 degrees out, its hard to enjoy a glass of red wine when it's about 85 degrees inside and I'm wearing jeans and a sweater. The staff was nice enough to turn down the thermostat when we asked about all the heat. So, the temperature got more comfortable and the construction finally stopped. That's when they started setting up for the band. Ugh. I have no problem with the band, but with how the staff managed it. They started lifting chairs over our table and pushing equipment by us, which meant us constantly having to move. It was super annoying. This was not the relaxing happy hour I was hoping for. I recently attended a fund raiser for Austin Pets Alive here. The wine rep was LATE for the fund raiser :( (bad for me, good for Opa) so I had to go to the bar and get some sustenance (translation- WINE) before I became weak and parched. And they have wine! ;0) The good, the bad and the ugly: The Good (and when they are good, they are very good): - The wine selection is mind boggling, making it hard to decide. - Did someone say Prosecco??? I was all over that. - Sunday HH prices - did someone say half off glasses all day Sunday and $2 sangria and mimosas? Woo Hoo! - Amazing outdoor patio with plenty of fans to make even a hot Austin day bearable. - Dog friendly patio The Bad (and when they're bad, they need improvement): - Layout - when I walked into the bar to order, the TV is situated to the left of the door and the world cup was going on. It made me feel like I was stepping in front of a movie screen in the middle of a movie (awkward). I walked out and mustered up the courage to walk back in again. - The wine selection, while good, needs to be on a board or menu somewhere. The staff is not knowledgeable enough to recommend, so you have to walk around the bar and look at each bottle and price on the bottle. This backs up the already slow bar service - The service - seems like only one person behind the bar can help you even when the line gets long. Others are either making food or doing some mystery thing I cannot figure out. - The food - I am torn between good and needs improvement. I only tried off the appetizer menu which was Greek but limited (just 6 selections). The $12.95 cheese plate was anemic, but the Mediterranean Plate looked significantly better for a few bucks more (Spanakopita, hummus, pita, Dolmades and olives added to cheese). The hummus and pita were just ok, but did not blow me away. For the prices - the food could be a bit better. The Ugly (and when they're ugly, they need to get it right or gnaw off their hands and get out of there before people wake the hell up): - The service was not really... well, service. From the time you walk in, how to order is confusing. Behind the bar they seem confused, and they really get confused if you want to pay cash instead of run a tab. We sat outside - and the waitress came by to clear our glasses - and we asked if we could order more. She asked if we had a tab. We said No and she pointed us inside. I offered to give cash, flustered, she agreed, then forgot about us after she took our money. - The patio sidewalk is a really uneven walk of limestone. Hopefully you do not leave here with an inebriated friend, lest they do a face plant on the stone. I would have given it 3.5 stars (but there is not a 1/2 star). So I rounded up. All in all, not a bad place for HH prices if you can put up with a confused service staff. Not sure I would do the food again, unless they had HH prices on that (which they do not). It is a better place for a night cap (especially on Sundays with 1/2 price wine by the glass). read more

One of the distinct possibilities in March (when the weather goes wonky half the time and is positively endorsed by the Chamber of Commerce the other half), is that, say for example, when a norther blows through on Saturday, and when by Monday things are gorgeous again, that one who lives here might well be tempted to step outside. And so it was that I found myself easing up the patio and into Opa on what seemed like a stunning day the likes of which we'd never see again. Gone are the overtones of particular music, giving way to a casual wine and bevvie bar with a patio featuring great bones. I just stopped in for a proverbial (but not literal) cup of joe, but I'll be back. That's how the nuances best present themselves. I'll just wait for the weather to chaperone. read more

The drink selection is HUGE, the food is more than better than your average pub fare, they understand the value of gigantic fans blowing cooled misted air (a BIG plus), and they host charitable events for the APA. Yes the ordering/paying station is still a little awkward, but I'm sure they'll work it out soon. At least nothing there is grotesquely overpriced. I happened to stumble across Opa! on a 101F evening post kayaking at zilker. Call me crazy, but staying out in the sun that long gave me an urge to down a pint. Yelp led me here and I can only say one thing - thank you, Yelp. The patio is gorgeous. It's homey and sophisticated - like a very rich/cool and old aunt's porch. Couple of swings attached to trees, couches strewn over the place, fancy books on Paris ... Tres belle!! Sangria is $3 during happy hour (4-7 weekdays and all day Sunday) plus a whole lot of wines half off and beers off a $. This ain't no craft beer hub, don't come here and ask for deschutes fresh squeezed. (FYI - my hubby actually did ask) Food - meh. Tzaziki sauce is amazing , but portions are teeny and sorta overpriced. They do have pizza, which in my case is usually a lifesaver. They also have free wifi and water coolers outdoors. My LO doesn't need a high chair anymore, but for the LOs who do- sorry parents. No high chairs. But the kids will love to sit on the big and comfy swings. Porch is both dog and kid friendly. Just watch for the un- gated entry arch way that your kid could run out of. Parking on Sunday was a nightmare - just park across at the CVS and walk , if necessary. Opa means grandpa in German, right? Cause there's nothing grandpa-ish or even remotely German about this place that I can tell. Everytime I've driven by here I thought it was small with no parking. I was wrong. It's much bigger in person, with plenty of space to park your Cadillac. The front courtyard has the feel of a European grotto, complete with fountains, bench swings and pretty pretty people. I haven't seen so many women stare at my junk since the last time I was visiting a nursing home. Seriously. And this time I wasn't even stuffing my drawers with a sock. I didn't eat any food, but some dude in front of me in line took his sweet ass time ordering a pizza and it smelled fucking amazing. Everyone else was jealous too, cause they stopped staring at my package for a second when his pie came out. Awkward. They have a bocce (petanque?) court on the backside of the building, which is (naturally) the best place to play with your balls, if that's your kind of thing. I thoroughly enjoyed myself back there, with complete strangers. Nobody told them I'm a pro, which is fine with me. The beer wasn't particularly cheap, but just being surrounded by so many gorgeous people made it taste better than a cheap beer with ugly people. Funny how that works. I suggest that you strap on your fancy shoes and get your ass in gear to get here as soon as possible, cause pretty people aren't very patient, and clearly they're waiting for you. read more

Small Update: After seeing my credit card statement with a charge from Music Cafe, I've now got hard evidence this is the same place as Music with a changed name and updated interiors. Also, the owners' daughter contacted me here after my original review was posted and tried to smooth things over and never responded after I wrote back. A few days later my review was deleted by Yelp with the bogus claim that I didn't have any first hand experience with the place. Minus 1 star. We went here curious to see what the difference was from the Music Cafe that opened up in the same location a few months back. One of the other reviewers mentioned "lots of greek food" and so we went with a bit of a hunger. T'was unfortunate, since the food "menu" is limited to essentially a few pita + dip options, a greek salad, moussaka, and a turkey wrap. There are sweets too, but baklava isn't exactly what I want to fill a hungry stomach with. I'm not much of a wine-aficionado (something about the headache I get after drinking a glass of it), so I won't weigh in on that topic. Beer on the other hand I like, but mainly I like it dark and that they've got a very limited selection of. The place has a pretty decent ambiance - a couple couches, some small tables, bar stools, and designer lighting. Deep red painted walls and Mediterranean-influenced decor assist in landing this squarely in wine-bar territory; however, the electronica they had playing contradicted that positioning a bit. If wine bars are your thing, this is one you'll probably enjoy, but if it's coffee or food you seek, keep on seeking to one of the many other coffee-house-cafés dotting the South Austin landscape. read more

I tend to pass by this place a lot, but the thought of going here never really dawned on me. My friend suggested we go here RIGHT after work, and thats how I finally found myself here, glass of sangria in hand, thanks. I was pleasantly surprised that parking was not a hassle. Probably because we got there at 5:30. Walked in and ordered some of their $2 sangrias, which were mighty tasty and the cool refreshing wetness was lovely. We ordered some of the baked feta and pita and found ourselves a spot in the corner under an umbrella. The umbrella being not needed because it was a stunning spring evening. Cars passing by us, plenty of people watching was definitely available. The inside of the place is small but not too small. I like how mostly everything is set up for pairs of two. It looks intimate for whatever reason you want to drop in here for. One thing I did notice was that the walls were painted red and there were some red couches....maybe someone needs a decorator? The artwork is noteworthy and looked like things I would have in my own home. The outside is where its at. When we got there, there were plenty of places to choose from, but as the evening went on, it got quite packed! Eventually some men arrived who were to be the live music entertainment. It was mellow enough not to drown out any conversations. My only complaint is that they took about 25 minutes (hey, whos counting?) to bring us our baked feta....an appetizer. They weren't even busy then. But hey, I don't know how to bake feta, didn't even know it could be baked til yesterday. Maybe it takes that long, maybe it doesn't. Happy hour lasts til 7pm, and I have no clue how much the prices jump after that. I absolutely love the environment! The outdoor seating is gorgeous! Don't undermine the indoor seating, because it is quaint and cozy as well. The coffee, on the other hand, is mediocre. I have had a latte, cold cofee, and Christmas in a Cup, all of which were not good or average. The baklava is good, but for a Greek place, it wasn't all that. The drinks were definitely over priced. For a piece of baklava and hot chocolate, my bill came out to about $8...ripped off... An extra plus to offset the food...complimentary valet parking (though you could literally park yourself right in front--kind of odd actually). Driving by Opa! on Lamar is sufficient. They have a wonderful & WIDE selection of wines ranging in prices to fit any budget. Their Sangria can't be beat for $2.50 [price during their Happy Hour. usually $5 a glass]. It's not overly sweet & they fill up the cup! || TIPS || Plan to wait about 30 - 40minutes for your food on a busy night-order a glass of wine or beer....time seems to pass oh so much more quickly when you have a drink in hand. I really want to love this place. After the fleeting Music Cafe died before I could visit, I wanted to be among the first to support the new Opa. I love the space. The first time friends and I made a stop here, we played bocce, hung out on the gorgeous (albeit empty) patio, and chitchatted with the bar keep about his imported Greek cheese. We shared a dish that was obviously microwaved, judging by its rubbery texture. Our cabernet was already turning to vinegar, and we asked to have it replaced. On my second visit with family, we caught an awkward music show during SXSW. The space inside was really tight, and people kept attempting to enter a blocked door. No attempt was made to create a stage area. The musicicans were good, but I felt really sorry for them because they had to play jammed between tables and a window. The iced mocha I ordered came out quickly, but it was nothing special. On my third visit to see bellydancers (great), I expected improvement based upon the beautifully lit sign and the number of people inside and out--on a Sunday night, no less. The cheese plate I ordered cost more than last time, and it looked like the wine selection had been expanded. I had the same problem--old wine. He poured me half a glass from an unopened bottle, but topped it off with the last bit of an unfinished bottle, and that ruined it. I think they should cut the wine selection down so their product doesn't go bad before it's consumed, because the thrifty bartender obviously never throws out old wine.
