They have a great patio in the front, side, and back-- there's plenty of room if you have a group wanting to find a good meeting spot. I'm not a coffee person, so you won't see me much in coffee shops or explore any for that matter. But work prompts you to stay awake, that means you need caffeine and a quiet place to keep the grindstone running. After a failed attempt to get our work done at Cosmic coffee shop, ( no offense, very noisy that Sunday.. it's one of my favorites but didn't quite fit the bill that day) we decided to hit Opa locates about 3 miles from Cosmic. The ambience is hippy; surrounded by ample trees and decent size parking lot. Austin was hot that day , yet the outdoor seating here was great- good shade and no scorching sun. We took a lounge table inside, grabbed a cup of plain black coffee and chai latte. My friend disliked the chai latte. I don't know much about this department, so just listened to it while she complained. Our seats were comfortable with ample outlets and table space. There are a few board games, Mediterranean dishes and drinks as well. I'm overall impressed with the ambience, would like to try their food next time I'm there. This was my first time here so I'll give it another shot someday...but from the looks of it..meh! I don't think this is much of a lunch place (more of a cafe than anything during lunch hours). I waited a couple of minutes for the barista to take my order and being a Greek place I thought...the Gyro has to be amazing. So I retired to the rear of the restaurant to hang out with my friends and 45 minutes later my food had still not arrived although my number was on my table. Turns out they mixed up my numbers and my food had been sitting at the bar for 30 minutes after I went looking for the barista to inquire about taking it to go. She said they put another one together for me which may have been the problem. The gyro was terrible. The pita bread was hard and cold, the lamb looked like it had been bought from Costco and unfrozen that morning. Long story short, I never like judging a place off of one visit but come on! You're Greek ....at least get a gyro right (the place at the mall would be better)! I'd recommend treating this place like a cafe and not a restaurant although I've heard it's more of a wine bar....maybe this was just a perfect storm of bad service and bad food. Hope not. read more

This is a hippie coffee shop that is trying to disguise itself as a wine bar. There is no table service, so you order everything - including your food - from the bar. That's a deli counter, not a restaurant. There is no wine list, so the bottles are lined up down the length of the bar. if someone happens to be sitting at the bar, you either have to reach over them to see the wine or miss that selection. The bartender was either unwilling or unable to make any recommendations. After all of that, the wine was horribly overpriced. (As an extra touch of class, the prices are stuck on the bottles with labels.) The food was fair, but the menu was very limited and it appeared that everything was warmed up in a microwave. Not sure where the kitchen is... I didn't have a negative experience, just a disappointing one. Nothing at this place is top-quality. It has quickly become one of my favorite spots to relax outside with friends! You have to try the Sangria and sit on the swing under the trees! :) I also recommend the food if you are hungry. I set up a girl's night last week at Opa!, and we had an absolute blast. I love the location and the setting here, and had been once before when it was Music Cafe. I have to say that it was sad that such a cute place was totally empty the entire time we were there. We were there from 6:30 PM to 11:00 PM, and we were the only people in the place besides the employees for the entire time. AUSTIN--we've got to support our local businesses, or we'll be over-run with starbucks. I really hope people start checking out this place so they don't go out of business too. The owner was incredibly sweet, and gave us a sampling of their foods. We tried hummus with pita, an olive plate, a cheese plate, a grilled pita with feta and olive oil, and apples with honey and cinnamon. They also had pizzas and sandwiches there but we didn't try them. The food was good, but I wouldn't plan on going here for dinner. It's more suited for an after dinner drink, or for a happy hour get together than a dinner date destination. The wine selection was good and the prices were VERY affordable. This is based pretty much on the food. It's Greek so I thought the gyro would be at least as good as a street vendor. WRONG! The Gyro is nothing like what I'd expect; it literally tasted like McDonald's rendition of a greek wrap. I am not Greek, however I am from Washington DC and have had authentic greek gyro. This was not it. The bread isn't even pita---well, it's not athenos pita at least--it's like that diet sandwich wrap pita, like a pita pocket meets tortilla, and a stale tortilla at that. Literally, it was hard to chew. And the tzatziki has sour cream too---although there's dill and it's not bad, it didn't taste homemade to me, but I could be wrong. And they don't have table service so if you have issues then you're S.O.L. Come here for the music, atmosphere or drinks. But DO NOT come hungry...i could not even finish the gyro. What a cool place to chill out on a Sunday afternoon! This past weekend I biked from Gourmand's to Takoba and was disappointed to find a completely packed bar with absolutely no place to sit. And it was loud. So, my friend suggested we walk down the road a bit and check out Opa! At first I was skeptical as I pictured a traditional Greek restaurant but was delighted to find a chill, homey lawn with swing seats and a bar stocked with seemingly hundreds of different bottled beer to try (I loved the strawberry beer, forget the name). Reasonably priced, lots of happy folks on dates seemingly enjoying themselves, quite, relaxing... great place to end a Sunday. The indoor area looks super comfy, too. read more

This place is a great place to go for a quiet read or study session. The inside has lots of worn-in eccentric couches for groups and plenty of small tables. The outdoors area is adorable with plenty of places to sprawl around including a nice wooden swing. Nice, quiet environment which is hard to find in Austin. I sorta wish this place remains unnoticed but I also worry that it'll get bought out by some trendy coffee place... If I could I would give this place zero stars. I cannot believe the way me and my three friends were just treated at Opa. I am not personally a avid costumer, but loads of my friends are and this is one of their favorite places to study. This was my experience today. After seeing that one of my friends had a Starbucks frappacuino, an employee came over and said, "I am going to have to ask whoever this belongs to to get rid of it because it is extremely disrespectful." The employee exits. About one minute later the same employee came back and said, "Also, if you aren't going to buy anything then you can't hang out here." Little did she know we were all about to buy lunch and coffee. Her tone was unacceptable. Sorry that we did not buy anythings as soon as we arrived. I have never EVER been treated this badly by an employee. I see that the Starbuck's could've been disrespectful but nothing compares to her horrible attitude. We left and took our business elsewhere. As college students, me and my friends constantly visit Opa but we will never be returning, and I will never recommend this place to anyone I know. PS. Stopped by again today with the Funky Diva (Keri B) for a glass of wine and discovered a few things that warranted an update. 1. They have a ping pong table on the front patio. 2. The have Bocce Ball out back. 3. I had a wonderful HH glass of Casa L Garcia (only 2.75 @ 1/2 off the opened bottle) and l loved it! It was the perfect wine for sipping in the warm er hot sun - light, crisp and refreshing and just so slightly sweet! Completely unrelated to Opa but my experience in drinking wine with Keri observation - I always swear I dislike white wine then I ultimately order it when drinking with Keri. Red Wine makes me hot, flushed, excitable and impulsive - 4 states that might lead to trouble with Mrs B.:) Keri is turning my palate onto liking white wine. read more

Opa is a newer member of this 'hood, which i why i totally understand that they seem to be struggling a bit to find their true "self." admittedly i don't think i got the full Opa experience on my first visit, although they could stand to make a few minor adjustments. a friend and i visited for an after-movie drink, and they had only a few open spots in the courtyard. it was a nice evening, so we thought we'd sit outside. unfortunately, both spots we tried sitting in were directly in front of the industrial-size misting fans. i instantly felt like i was transported to the beach with the breeze in my hair, sea spray included. not exactly what i was looking for on this particular evening, and i instantly realized why these spots were still open. we ventured inside where there was ample seating. they have both table and chair seating, as well as comfy armchairs and tables. ordering was a little strange--since all their wines are spread along the bar area with price tags attached, i found it a bit difficult to decide on a wine. i opted for a beer, since they were easy to spot in the cooler in the back. the staff was friendly, and the prices for beer were about average. now, let's talk atmosphere... outside, they had a cute little singer doing the whole acoustic guitar thing. when we arrived she was doing a cover of the White Stripes "Little Ghost." it was pretty adorable. then later on, we noticed a belly dancer/fire juggler performing in the courtyard, so it seems their entertainment can vary throughout the evening. inside, however, is a different place alltogether. our conversation was mixed with the most random selection of what i can only guess was a poorly-chosen internet radio station. there was everything from Hootie & the Blowfish to Linkin Park to Dave Matthews and i think i even heard some Blues Traveler in there. it was a bit distracting, as was the decor. it felt a little like an old barn had been painted on the inside (in old barn red, no less) and turned into a little drinking establishment. the inside and outside of Opa do not seem to fit together at all. it's something of a mixed personality, i'd say. i'd like to return to try their happy hour, or at least enjoy some of the outdoor entertainment with a beer in hand (sans giant fan misters). all is not lost., Opa! read more

I would give Opa! 3.5 stars as a casual place to hang out and have a coffee, read, do homework or even have a cocktail. They have a beautiful patio. Opa! unfortunately gets 1 star as a place to eat lunch. I'd give them 2 stars overall. The counter service was very awkward. The service was not very friendly, they didn't seem to want to take our food order. The employee who took our order actually brought us our drinks and disappeared without taking out payment or giving us a number. We stool uncomfortably by the cash register waiting to pay for 5 minutes or so and then went and found a table. After going back inside to check on things after about 15 minutes, my partner was able to pay and get us refills on our drinks. When the food finally came out about 45 minutes after we initially ordered I was pretty frustrated. I ended up with a really dry falafel wrap with a tiny bit of tomato and ton of onions on it and a pile of stale crushed up little pita chips, like whats left at the bottom of the bag. I think plain pita chips is a pretty bizarre choice for a side for a wrap that already comes on pita bread, but the presentation was almost comical. Needless to say, I won't be eating here again, Phoenicia and Tarbouch are both right down the street, and are cheaper, have better service and far more delicious. read more

Meh...it's ain't what it used to be. I remember when Opa's first opened. I fell in love with them. Their variety of wines, cute intimate setting on S. Lamar. I knew it destined to stay. So I was excited to meet up with friends when we all agreed to meet here. It grew much bigger which I thought was great and it was much harder to get parking, which is starting to become an issue everywhere on S. Lamar, so that wasn't an issue. My issue: So before I've gone to the bar and asked about the wines as well as their tastes and what they should go with and before, I've had some excellent advice. However this time around, the woman who was behind the bar had absolutely no interest in answering any type of questions. I'm pretty laid back and it wasn't like there were people behind me. I just simply asked about the chocolate wine that was written on the menu. The response I got was, no we do not serve that here, I've never heard of it. When I asked her again what she would recommend instead, I got a mean look and a "I don't know" response. Fair enough, so I walked to get a beer instead and still left a decent tip. But it put a sour taste in my mouth. I believed in you Opa's, I thought you were cool. Now it's become a place I don't care to go to anymore and what's worse is that my friends witnessed it too and were upset, it did put a damper in our get together. This is the perfect place to have that "after work glass of wine" with a friend, or a warm cup of green tea with yourself and your MAC. Some of those one star reviewers should dine in north austin where things are done in a way that they can understand. This is a bar that happens to serve food. There's plenty of good seating and the ambience is warm and nice, with decor set to remind one of Greece. The bar is set up like a Grecian bar, so you go find what you want and tell them; apparently some pf the reviewers here have never been in the Grecian or Croatian seaside towns. The valet parking was somewhat disorganized, as was the service, but, hey, this is South Austin and if you don't have the inner peace to deal with glitches like that, then don't come here, or to South Austin at all. Tried this place for the first time on a Wednesday during Happy Hour, I like the outdoor area and the fact that it is dog friendly and the live music. They have Valet parking in the evening which is pretty cool - only reason they didn't get 5 stars is because they park other cars behind the cars in the parking spots and you have to wait forever to get your car out - so parking KINDA sucks in the evening - plenty of parking during the day. Staff seems very friendly and outgoing but I was to busy having fun with my friends to notice anything else. What shocked me the most is when Leslie walked in - I about spit my stuff all over the place. I have only seen him on the news/newspaper and on the corner but never in person. He seems friendly and outgoing. The staff was friendly with him. I will be returning with the Austin Coffee and Brunch Social Group. read more

I had my birthday celebration at OPA! this year and it was absolutely fantastic! Not only is the courtyard lovely to sit and enjoy the weather, but the food and drink menu are extensive and reasonably priced and the waitstaff particularly hospitable. Once the owner, Spiro, found out it was my birthday (and that I spoke a bit of Greek), he set out on a mission to make my night as festive as possible. He came and chatted with us over coffee and cake, toasted me with champagne and at the end of the night, just when we thought it couldn't get any better (and we couldn't get any drunker) he showed up with ouzo for the whole table!! Opa brings the warmth and openness of Greek culture right to your table. I don't usually leave reviews, but this one really kind of got to me, so here we go. After waiting 30+ Minutes for a gyro I decided to check in on my order and see whats going on. Not a big deal, but I noticed everyone who ordered their food after I did, received their food pretty quick. After questioning the bartender and the lady behind the bar they said it will be out in a few minutes, cool no big deal, but definitely felt a bit judged. After a while I decided to get a beer. The bartender said it be $8.75 before tip, I was pretty shocked. Luckily he told me Happy hour is in three minutes... After all of this, little to no customer service, except for a smile after the bartender told me I was three minutes early to happy hour, I'd rather spend my time and money somewhere else. Plenty of options around that have better prices and customer service. I will say that they were nice about picking up dishes. read more

This is a nice little coffee shop/bar/cafe with decent Greek food and good wine. During happy hour you can get glasses of wine from opened bottles for half price, which can be a heck of a deal. We tried the lamb gyro, which was very good, and the falafel, which was ok. The portions are on the light side, so you may want to get a few dishes to share if you want a filling meal. We were still a bit peckish after sharing these two dishes. The staff is very friendly, and very accommodating as well. We wanted to try some of the open wines before choosing one, and they let us try as many as we wanted. And when we wanted a side of spanikopita, which is not on the menu as a side dish, they were willing to sell us one. And when it didn't come out, they gave us a second one for having to wait. So A+ on customer service for sure. The tables are all pretty small, and round), so our party of 6 surrounded two of the tables pushed together. I've always shunned the idea of working outside my home office. I'm one of those weirdos who has laser focus at my home or a real office or anywhere else - makes no difference. Why go to a coffee shop or co-working place when my home office kicks ass? Well, maybe I figured it out. I had a coffee meeting at Opa today, stayed for a bite and ended up working for a few hours here. This is a really nice place. The coffee was strong. The lunchy was munchy. They had plugs for my computer which was on 1% battery. Spacious. Free internet. I enjoyed the change of pace. Don P. knows about working in coffee shops. I've been here quite a few times! They have one of the best chai lattes in town. I really enjoy the mixture of coffee shop, cafe, wine, beer, etc. The patio is awesome & beautiful when the weather is great, especially at night. The patio lighting is so romantic. They also have a good bit of indoor seating over other local coffee shops. The food is good but it is a tad pricey but they do have a great coffee selection. Plus they are open pretty late which helps with last minute study sessions. They have ample plugs but they are all along the walls & bar. I honestly don't care too much for their parking so if you're coming with a group, carpool especially at night! They do have live music in the evenings Thursday - Sunday. I've never sat & listened but don't expect to study or get work done inside during those times. I think this place is perfect for intimate settings & conversations & the few times I've been it hasn't been too packed at all. Gyro is very good. Salads also top notch. My only complaint is that the restaurant caters to single customers, who order a single drink and sit at a table alone, looking at their phone or laptop for hours. We have been here twice this month - once at lunchtime and once midday. It made no difference in clientele. At 2 pm every single table was occupied by one person with a cup of coffee and a laptop or phone. I had to eat at the bar, where two other people were sitting with a cup of coffee and a device. This ain't Starbucks. The coffee is "bottomless cup", so free refills all day long. read more

After seeing an Austin Chronicle add touting impressive happy hour prices I decided to check the new and improved place out. I had been for coffee when it was the Austin Music Cafe. At that time I was the only one there which was awkward and the furniture was somewhat uncomfortable and too chic. I like the changes they have made inside and out. The furniture is very comfy and casual with a lounge music piped through speakers in the beautiful live oaks. A ping pong table sits mostly untouched to the side of the patio because most of the patrons seem to be middle aged ladies sipping wine after work. Dogs patter back and forth and a food runner comes out every now and then with a small dish. The guys behind the counter are very friendly and the owner carries dog treats in his pocket. The uncorked wines are half off for a glass and $2 sangria are bargains. A dollar off the beer was good enough for me to get a Firemans. Chimay is the only other option on tap. Quite a few bottle varieties are available. My girlfriend got a malbec, but the bottle emptied before the glass was full so what she got was on the house. Nice deal. So a perfect patio, good drinks, occasional live music...all great BUT we ordered the hummus appetizer plate for 5.95. An appetizer should take just a few minutes. It took 45 minutes!!! I will never order this again. They were apologetic for the wait but unless I want a muffin or cookie I may not get food here anymore. An after work drink though, sure. read more

My wife and I enjoyed a day spent here working on our laptops -- lunch, lattes and drinks from the cooler. The interior was lovely, and the patio would have been a good choice, too, in a cooler season. Only gripe was that I'm not a fan of the cashier and barrista being the same person (are you listening, Cafe Mundi? Oh, right, you're closed down, so of COURSE you're not), and in this case the cashier was also the barrista AND the lunch-preparer (I don't say 'cook' because I'm pretty sure she assembled/microwaved our food but no cooking was involved). But she was sweet and the food was tasty enough, though nothing to write home about. Short and bittersweet: I'm sort of giving Opa the three-star benefit of the doubt bc I was already "hangry"...but the food seems overpriced for what you get at, say, any other Greek establishment in town. From what I understand some of it is actually delivered from a restaurant up North that belongs to the same owner, and then reheated. When I walked up to order, there were three employees behind the bar who just continued having their conversation for about five minutes before turning around and acknowledging me...I'm admittedly an impatient person, but this was so bad that I just started laughing and actually wanted to see how long it could possibly last. Without going into detail, it was typical hipster "I'm too cool for my job" crap. Food quality was decent though. That being said, the beer and wine selection was good. They had Shiner Light Blonde, which I have a soft spot in my heart for...pretty much the booze and the chill atmosphere, combined with my understanding that any place can have an "off night" as far as service is concerned, contributed to my three stars. Beautiful seating outdoors (except for the drunk/high man who wandered around asking people for money and later shouting the c-word to an employee). We were very excited to try the gyros but were horribly disappointed. Even though it was very early in the evening and NOT busy, we waited about 45 minutes before our gyros came out. I suspect they forgot our order because I had to go inside and ask. PLEASE do not order gyros unless you like 4-5 slices of pre-frozen/cold gyro meat (similar to what you'd get at a bulk food store). They'll stuff it with lettuce so you won't notice and maybe 2 slices of tomato. Really, really disappointing. read more

most awkward night of my life. It took an hour and 15 minutes to get baked feta... It was just a piece of cheese toasted in a toaster oven with some olive oil poured on top. During that time, we painfully sat through open mic night. We tried to cancel our order but they wouldn't let us. Just had to sit there and endure it. read more

How many places in Austin can two young parents leisurely enjoy an awesome glass of wine poured by knowledgeable staff while their toddler enjoys exploring an expansive patio? But what really motivates me to write this review is the fact that tonight, the clearly understaffed and frazzled staff made a tiny error with our food order and then went FAR above and beyond the call of duty to make things right. It is this friendliness and overall attention to detail that turns my four stars into five. read more
