The chicken skewer plate is probably the best thing on the menu - paired with the upgrade of sweet potato fries. Pretty done and done there. The beef skewer plate is probably the second best thing on the menu. And the rest is if you have smaller appetite or want to try something new (haha jk). Our table got the hummus sampler, a chicken schnitzel, a hummus bowl, and that tomato egg dish that I'm blanking on at the moment. I still haven't gone to the restaurant yet. However I got delivery for a dinner party I was having. I order two kinds of hummus: one was sabich for sure and the other was with pine nuts. I usually order hummus for my other guests because most places cannot do it that well. This one is so frighen good! I also got yellow and green falafels. They were great. I got a fatoush salad and Israeli salad, both were great but the fatoush had such an amazing flavour. Of course I got loads of pita and everyone was going on and on about how good they were all night. I am so glad I got two malabi, because there was just enough for me to have two bites of the delicious dessert after I cleaned up when everyone went home! I've been having Oren's for years in Mtn View, Palo Alto and Cupertino, was glad to find this location in the city. I've felt like Oren's has ruined hummus for me at many places, I love their Israeli-style hummus bowls and the whole-wheat bread. Hummus at other spots feels flavorless and too runny to me, and even if those hummus are more authentic to the region they come from, I prefer Oren's over most. Their red and green chutneys have been a staple for years, and I appreciate that they generously provide a container full of each on all tables. Being vegetarian, the falafel is usually my go-to, but I also enjoyed the beyond meat offered here, a new item on the menu. It's priced relatively high and I hope faux meat can become more affordable and varied as we go forward so as to not come in the way of widespread adoption. The insides are welcoming and as an added bonus, bus #8 comes right to the entrance to take you to chinatown/north beach/the wharf. Perfect! read more

I love this place. I had the opportunity to have lunch and brunch and had delightful experiences both from a food and customer service standpoint. For lunch, I usually order the Israeli Salad with chicken and it's a light and filling meal for me each time. I also like to share the bourekas (addicting!) My wife and I had brunch here on a Saturday and really enjoyed the french toast and the shakshuka! Very yummy! I cannot express enough how lovely the staff is whenever I come back. My building had an emergency water pipe repair. This meant I couldn't use my bathroom or kitchen at home. I'd heard Marcus Shelby was going to be playing bass at Yerba Buena Garden's free lunchtime show, so I dragged myself out into the cold, windy, not quite foggy but not quite sunny streets. Bonus that the Yerba Buena people had set up a few chairs on the lawn, so I sat for almost forty five minutes listening to jazz played expertly by four musicians while their sheet music and cymbal stands blew away in the gusts. Hearing the call of nature increasing in volume, I remembered an interesting sounding place nearby called Oren's Hummus. First time I saw it on an internet map I had a vision of a pear-shaped grouch behind a tiny streetside window counter wielding a serving spoon like a weapon over a large steaming vat of dark yellow glop, yelling in an unintelligible accent vaguely reminiscent of the middle east, yet by way of Neptune. Maybe I had simply confused third with sixth street in my mind. Passing by more recently I found the restaurant actually looked pretty cozy inside and fairly large as downtown places go. Cut to the chase: The bathroom was fully functional in all the most necessary ways and had music playing loud enough inside that it could double as a nightclub. Now for some hummus! I thought I knew from hummus. Obviously not! This is a whole universe away from the sad little half dollop of slightly gritty stuff they call hummus at the Greek fast-casual place I used to frequent in Colorado, where they charge you a couple bucks extra if you ask them to drop the whole spoonful on your plate. Oren's has lots of options for what to get with or instead of hummus but I thought, for a place calling itself Hummus right there as its name, I sort of had to get the "Classic" bowl of hummus. It was the smoothest, silkiest giant helping of hummus I've ever eaten. I'm pretty sure this is a good thing but like I said before, I don't know from hummus. I also can't eat gluten which kind of rules out pitas, which are de rigueur in hummus land. The menu advertised gluten-free pitas with an upcharge but the waiter said supply chain issues deprived them of the GF ones. He offered vegetables for dipping in place of the missing gluten free pitas. When Oren gets his supply chain fixed I sincerely hope he still has the dipping veggies as an alternative. I never missed the pitas because the veggies made for a much better meal anyway. Lunch was reasonably priced, tasty, and pretty darn healthy. The rice was fluffy and packed with flavor, but I found the beef kebab to be on the drier side and hard to chew. Also got 3 sides to share: - Falafel: Delicious! Soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. - Basmati Rice: My friend and I both found this to be a bit dry. - Moroccan Carrots: Never had these before, but am glad to have tried! Oren's Hummus! They have multiple locations around the Bay but this is the first time I've tried it. Had the rice bowl with beef kebab and was surprised how good it was! The rice was well seasoned and had tomato bits mixed in to enhance the flavor. So if you don't like tomato it might not be for you, but I personally loved it. Beef kebab was juicy and super flavorful! One of the better ones I've had. Didn't enjoy the tahini-based sauce that much. They gave complimentary fermented cabbage, which was nice as an appetizer. Honestly, this restaurant changed my life. I went here back in February not expecting much, but was blown away by their eggplant dips, chicken, and cauliflower. I went from being neutral about eggplants to being a diehard fan, and I am always chasing that amazing taste of Oren's eggplant. I tried a number of the eggplant dips, and Oren's eggplant is definitely my favorite. It has caramelized onions and hardboiled eggs which I didn't seem that appealing on paper but it makes for an incredible eggplant dip. Savory with great texture. With the hot pita it's just perfection. I brought back two containers of it on the plane, and I only wish that I had gotten four containers of it instead of trying two different eggplant dips. The baba ghanoush and Romanian eggplant are also good, but nothing like Oren's. I also got the grilled chicken entree and it was amazing -- so juicy and tender and flavorful. And the quick-fried cauliflower florets -- amazing! Fresh, hot, crispy, perfectly-seasoned. Everything was amazing -- I don't usually remember individual dishes this clearly after almost a year, but Oren's is an exception. I've tried making Oren's eggplant at home but it's just not the same. I'll just have to go back someday! read more

If doing takeout, I highly suggest ordering online in advance by 15 mins just in case as this place does a LOT of takeouts. I only ordered a hummus mushroom bowl and it was hidden in a sea of other to-go orders. The price of it is standard to another place I like in the east bay (Zaytoon Mediterranean Restaurant), I do find the hummus thicker than I usually have, but is good with the red and green sauce that comes with it. The pita that comes with every hummus bowl is warm and fluffy, the only negative for me is that the mushrooms are scarce. For the almost $4 difference, I would at least like a little more mushroom as it is a hummus mushroom bowl. read more

We made a reservation online just incase it was busy it wasn't necessary as there were not a lot of people which was actually good for social distancing. The service and food were great! I especially liked the atmosphere and decor, very modern. I ordered a mint tea, it's hot water with mint leaves. Very simple yet delicious. It was great for the chilly night. We also ordered the mushroom hummus and it was so delicious! For my dinn we I ordered the beef kebab with falafels, it was really good! As expected it remains the gamiest of all vegan meats that I know. Nice grill marks lended a shush kabob vibe. Otherwise-- for $20bucks, the sandwich FALLS FLAT. It's rather small & the few chunks of "lamb" are mixed with their cucumber relish (not my fav filling for a pita sandwich) & their hummus as I know is additionally bland. The green (zhoug?) & red hot sauce lend a lil flavor. But I'd expect effort to season the "meat" & make it a stand-out pita for that price. The bare minimum was done to put it together. Hummus is the star here, & this hummus does not disappoint. I opted for the beef hummus bowl to start, & the lamb & beef kabobs for my main. Dishes are generously portioned; this (along w the pita) was 3 meals for me. The beef in the hummus dish is ground, spicy, & zesty. The juxtaposition with the smooth & cool hummus works well. The only thing is when it comes to reheating the leftovers. The hummus needs just a brief nuke in the microwave, whereas obviously the ground beef needs a bit longer. Yes, you need to separate them...no matter. The kabobs were...a lot! This dish will sate even the hungriest man in your life, for sure. I love lamb, but I dare say there was the smallest hint of gaminess. I don't like my meat gamy in the least, so this aspect was a miss for me. Both my sides, the rice & the tabouleh, were better than average, but not stellar. Speaking of stellar... I ordered gluten-free pita, & it was amazing! Whaaat?! This was hands down the fluffiest pita bread I've ever had. As I was actually eating, I literally couldn't get over how good it was, despite being GF.
