Great PDQ (Pão de Queijo) s, great variety of bake goods both sweet and savory. Really appreciate having this unique option on the upper middle east side of Manhattan. I often will just get the PDQ's plain and buy some lentil soup nearby and dipsydoo the PDQ into the soup. Lately I've been changing things up by getting the PDQ with a filling, which is an option at Padoca, going with the cream cheese and tomato, which is yummy. The other day I went for breakfast and I got a PDQ with an egg and cheese. I'm not sure of the cheese but the egg was not scrambled (my preferred way), more of an over easy, not bad, just not my favorite way to eat an egg. The breakfast sandwich came with a hot beverage, I opted for the Hot Cider, which was tasty and warmed me up on the cold day I was drinking it. A friend literally just told me about this place as I was almost heading to starbucks for some work on my laptop. So glad I came. It's cute, delicious and there's even a swing in the back for you to sit and work in. (Just one though so you'll have to gnarl your way in, ahem I mean ask nicely...) I had the mushroom empaninha (I don't know what that is exactly but it's not an empanada). It's like a tart filled with delicious mushroom filling. Had a few minutes to spare before heading into work in the area last week. That's when I decided to drop into this establishment for a coffee and a pastry of some sort. If it weren't for the sales rep at the front register being so patient, helpful and knowledgeable, I would've had an awful experience. I initially desired a French Vanilla iced coffee, the sales rep informed me that it wasn't an option on the menu so in turn, she suggested hazelnut as an alternative. I took her word for it. For my pastry, I vocalized that I wanted a muffin. She recommended the omega 3 muffin which is similar to a carrot cake. Although I relatively enjoyed both of my choices, the total came up to nearly $10. Overpriced in my book, therefore, I won't come back here. read more

Ordered a birthday cake the day before on Padoca's website/email and the customer service was superbly pleasant. After I submitted my order, I received a call to confirm and make my payment over the phone. I placed my order for pickup at the UES location the next day, but they make their cakes at their LIC location, so they had me pick up the cake at their partner florist location (across the street from the UES Padoca). Everything went smoothly-- the florist was friendly and efficient. I bought a 6" orange olive oil cake with confetti sprinkles ($42 + $4 for sprinkles = $46). It looked beautiful and professional (I took the photo after having placed candles on the top hence the holey appearance in the photo). The instructions said to leave the cake out at room temperature for 2-4 hours for the best flavor, and I will say, eating it after having it out for about 2 hours was better than eating it right after receiving the order (when it was a little frozen?). After 2 hours, the cake was more moist than dense and the orange flavor was more pronounced. But even then, the "cake" portion of the cake, i.e. not the topping or filling, was pretty dense and almost molten, kind of like pound cake. Maybe that had to do w the olive oil? Not bad, but not what I expected from a birthday cake. I think I'll opt for the traditional cakier/light and fluffy vanilla or chocolate cake going forward. Have bought frozen pdqs from the UES store and baked them at home-- perfect! Also bought pdqs a la carte at the UES store and enjoyed them, though they aren't warm and the filling is usually pretty minimal for the price. read more

I was looking for a bakery nearby my job and this was one of the bakeries that popped up. I decided to come here because the photos were appealing and the reviews were great! They ladies servicing the guests were very polite and professional. I ordered the omega 3 muffin that tasted similar to a carrot cake but 100 times better! I forget which nuts were inside but it really made the difference having that crunch in there. Absolutely soft and yummy. You can tell the stuff is baked fresh daily. There was also this really dark almost burnt looking chocolate cookie that I couldn't resist buying. And it was just as delicious, soft and fresh all the same. Along with my treats I ordered a small drip coffee, I usually drink my coffee black to really appreciate the rich flavors. I definitely enjoyed this cup of joe as well. PDQ was the best part but honestly not enough to make me come back. Empadinha was frozen and unevenly reheated resulting in a very unsatisfied snack. Cold brew was low-medium quality, any random chain would be better. All in all, I spent $15 for calorie dense food that was neither good nor satisfying. This is a hard pass for me. read more

The cashier intentionally gave me all the small bills for $90 change. When I counted it was short $10. When when questioned she demanded me to hand back all the changes she gave me. And give me back stack of small bills. Before handing back, she mixed the order of the bills like poker cards. Used to be a great place for fresh pão de queijo when they first opened but now it is a shell of its former self. The last 2 times my wife came here (10/24/2018 being the most recent visit) she saw flies all over the pastries/bread. She ended up just getting coffee both times. On the second visit she asked the cashier politely if they can do anything about the fly problem. The cashier didn't apologize or make any inclination that she will address the issue with management. All my wife received was a blank stare with a smirk like "why are you bothering me about this". Ordered cup of Mocha and a slice of banana chocolate chip bread, both were perfectly done. Mocha cup was big and filled up all the way to the top with goodness, so worth what I paid for, it gave me that morning kick and the taste was the best part. Banana bread was very moist, not so sweet which I personally prefer, the bread wasn't hot but tasted like it just got baked, it has dark chocolate chips on the top and melting chocolate inside... Sooooo good! The place has a nice decor with cute tea pots hanging from the wall over the tables and big windows, staff are very nice and greet you with a smile, they were busy but took time to answer my questions. No doubt that their trademark PDQs are great. And both savory and sweet options are equally delicious. However customer service is a hit-or-miss. First visit was pleasant but second time there was an order mix-up because of same names and probably one of the rudest encounters I've ever had at a coffee shop/bakery. I was accused of grabbing the wrong order and then grilled whether I actually heard my name called or not. I profusely apologized (though really not sure entire thing was my fault since I grabbed the order when I heard my name called - isn't it on y'all to clarify who the order is for??). I went back in to exchange orders, and the employee, who was a few steps ahead of me, let the door hit my face. When we got inside she slid my order across the counter without looking up. It was a level of hostility that was so unnecessary/out of proportion that it seemed unreal lol! TLDR: if you want equally yummy pao de quiejo, greater variety of Brazilian/Portuguese pastries, and the famous congenial Brazilian hospitality, give New York Pao de Quiejo in Astoria a try instead. read more

You normally won't find me in UES but I had Padoca Bakery which is Brazilian bookmarked for some time now and a Yelp posting of a PDQ put me into Yelper mode and off I went on my uptown adventure. PDQ is Pao De Queijo, (Brazilian) or Pan De Queso (Spanish) which is cheese bread. Padoca Is a clean modern corner shop with helpful staff with labeled sweet and savory baked items on display, and they have seating in the back too. Now one of my vices is that I over do it at bakeries. My Grandma would say 'no comer con los ojos' or 'don't eat with your eyes' and that's what I do; so I got 2 PDQs, 2 Romeo, & Jullet , a Guava & Cheese Babka, 2 Coconut Macaroons, 2 Oatmeal Cookies. I'm beginning to wonder if I lost 4 office buddies in the last 7 months because with me around they all put on some baby fat ? Well just remember the more of you there is the more of you there is to love. ;-0' I had a lot here so I split my goodies between the office and home and I was surprised by the little to no cheese in my PDQ or the Babka including only a little bit of Guava too. They still tasted delicious and you could taste cheese in the PDQ but I was expecting it to flow out. I'm sorry I did not pick a Presunto e Queijo, or Ham & Cheese in a PDQ it must taste real good as a combo. But what I got was still a big hit at the office but I guess the baker is concerned with today's heath conscious consumers and not the old school Latinos that just want you to pile it on. I never see myself in the neighborhood of UES; however this bakery was definitely an exception. With lots of freshly baked goods displayed right in front of me, I almost could not resist the temptation and grab a bite on their super cute muffin. The croissants were simply so huge in size that made my mouth watery! If you happen to stop by in this area, make sure you grab one, and enjoy that with their espressos. I think this place is super cute with a large and bright seating area. It's rustic modern. The coffee was quite good. The pastries looked amazing, and there was even a to-go fridge. My main issue is the pricing. I'm not sure it's reasonably to charge that much for standard items. Their pastries are about 20% higher in price than comparable places in the area. The drip coffee was already $3. I would definitely be coming here more often if it were cheaper but this place feels very gourmet. It's good quality. read more

Saying "Padoca Bakery" is almost (but not quite) the same concept as saying "chai tea" or "queso cheese" (or "ATM machine" or "PIN number"... you get the point... or not... it doesn't matter; you might as well say "salsa sauce"). This little Padoca recently opened up on the corner of 1st Ave and 68th St, a spot previously occupied by Wok & Roll, the erstwhile cash-only, not-so-good Chinese take-out restaurant that disgraced our neighborhood with its odious presence. I would describe Padoca as "cute as a button" if I genuinely believed that buttons were cute. Padoca is way cuter than any button I've ever seen (including, but not limited to, Benjamin Button), and is a very welcome addition to the environs of UES, arguably one of the few neighborhoods in our City that have preserved their character. I have enjoyed the sweet and savory baked items here, but for every single one that I've sampled, I found out that they just don't taste as good after sitting in the display case for even an hour. So get them when they're freshly out of the oven or, at the very least, ask that they be warmed up for you. The egg and cheese brioche in particular does not taste very good once it has cooled down to room temperature and the yolk has hardened and dried out. It does taste great while it's still warm and the contents (egg and cheese) have their gooey consistency. The pao de queijo (cheese bread) is a great snack at any time of day, as is the empadinha de frango (mini chicken pie). I like my empada (and empadinha) with some kind of meat, so I haven't tried the spinach or mushroom empadinha. Give me anything with guava, and I am inextricably in love. Needless to state, then, that my favorite sweet here is the guava and sweet cheese swirl. Our cousins in Central and South America seem to have figured out how well guava jelly goes with any kind of unaged soft white cheese. I see that reflected in so many Cuban, Puerto Rican, Colombian and Brazilian desserts. I cannot not say that I have irretrievably lost my heart to Padoca (yet), but I am very happy to continue to flirt with this new neighbor for a long time to come! read more

I wanted to be a fan. I really did. I tried this eatery out a few times and finally gave it my firm stamp of disapproval. Here is why. Food is okay. Sandwiches can be stale. Pastries are alright. While this spot is cute and has potential to be a success, customer service is severely lacking. Every time I went here, I experienced some sort of customer service hiccup- rude, slow, or a delightful combination of the two. The last time I was here, I asked for a bag for my purchase and the cashier sighed as if I had asked her to perform a circus act. Equipped with morning pastries that will up the ante for any breakfast coffee serving Starbucks and Le Pain. They also installed a full size swing for the kids-at-heart adults. It's seriously the cutest place ever. The egg brioche is a play on their cheesy bread, which was so light, fluffy and cheesy that you need two. Their cappuccino is the size of a grande at Starbucks for $2 less. The foam heart is free. Definitely coming back to try their other pastries and find out what this "Babychino" is all about. read more

The coffee is good (Noble Tree), but they've gotten a bit lazy. I specifically ask for a cortado to stay and a cold brew to go, but the barista doesn't care, and makes both of them to go - every single time. Love all the little baked treats and decor, but with the price it really wouldn't kill them to actually make my cortado to stay. No more latte art in the past visits either. They warm the pão de queijo now, which is great. Their rocky road cookie is awesome. Empadinhas are super overpriced for the size. They started serving little brunch dishes on weekends. I didn't feel like asking for it to be changed especially since I was more interested in catching up with my bestie! I also tried the PDQ pao de queijo which is basically a cheese bread. It was okay, I was too hungry to worry about taste. I was disappointed in the fact that there is no bathroom available and that there weren't too many options. TL/DR Room to sit with cute decor, but chai latte sucked. Cute place with tables full of solo people between class or appointments, and a few couples cycled through for a coffee and pastry. Decor is sweet with a teapot light fixture above the communal table, and the pictures of their food and drink that adorn the walls look appetizing, though a bit like posters with blatant branding that doesn't try to be subtle. I dropped in for a chai latte to avoid too much caffeine, and while the place is cute, I would have been better off at one of the many chain coffee shops surrounding Padoga. My chai latte with almond milk had literally no flavor. I truly don't know what makes it "chai" as it tasted like it was 100% almond milk. I forced myself to drink the whole thing in hopes that the bottom was chai and just hadn't been mixed. To my displeasure, I drank a full cup of liquid cardboard, the only flavor being the cinnamon that I sprinkled on top at the counter. Maybe their coffee is good, and the pastries smelled delightful, but I probably won't be back to find out. read more

I usually prefer sweets, but today I was craving savory. I asked what was good and was recommended the Empadinha and the Pao de Quijo. As there were two options of the former (A Heart of Palm and a Mushroom) I ordered the Mushroom ($4.50), the Pao de Quijo ($2.25), and the egg and cheese broiche bun ($2.25). With a dilly mushroom filling wrapped inside a buttery and flaky crust, I liked the mushroom empadinha best, though I suspect the use of button mushrooms led to an anemic mushroom flavor. In the pao de quijo, a similar ingredient mistake (fontina, a melty, but mild cheese) can possibly be the cause of the weakness of a cheese flavor in this bun. This bun is definitely creamy, but the cheese topping lends a greater cheesey punch than the filling. My least favorite was the egg and cheese brioche bun. The egg cracked into the dough wasn't enough to satisfy my savory craving. It was mostly bun, but unlike the pao de quijo, the cheese wasn't mixed into the dough. It was only sprinkled on top. So the bun had to make up for the bulk of the flavor and it didn't. First of all, I wouldn't have defined this bun as a brioche. It wasn't soft enough, the crumb ought to have been smaller, and it should have been sweeter. I found the bread texture to be closer to a regular sweet bun. Perhaps I'll have better luck with their sweet options. read more

The coffee here is really good has a slight hazelnut flavor. Pastry bar is very specific. They have a guava roll which I thought was delish. The egg brioche was not good. Its too fluffy and the egg is fully cooked, it looked like it would be yolky. I like a wet egg so was surprised when it was cooked through. The pai de quejo are great bread balls made with blended egg and cheese. My kids really liked those. The cafe is unique some of the seats are swings and I love the homey feel. Everyone at this bakery is really nice and helpful, and coming in here can occasionally be a trap if you're a dessert fiend like me. My top favorite things they offer are: 1. The lemon pound cake; its so fresh and slightly citrusy. Perfect for summertime with some iced tea. 2. Brownie; it has thick chunks of chocolate within, and some salt to contrast the savory chocolate flavor. AMAZING 3. The Emphadine's (excuse the spelling); these are basically small baked flaky pastries filled with either mushrooms, chicken, or heart of palm (I believe, I haven't tried this particular filling). So far they always have been delicious and a perfect snack 4. The coconut cake; may be the most moist cake I've ever had. It really doesn't look like much, but trust me and order it. It will blow your mind away. 5. Their espresso and lattes are also delicious. Overall, they offer so many things, that It'll take me a while to get through it all, but so far everything I've tried has been above and beyond my expectations. Padoca Bakery is a delicious alternative to the chockablock chain options (Le Pain Quotidien, Starbucks, etc.) that surround it. I had a breakfast sandwich on their pão de queijo -- PDQ for short -- with bacon, avocado, and tomato. PDQ is a small Brazilian cheese roll, hence no need for a separate slice of cheese. The sandwich came with a small pile of crispy kale chips. All of the servers were incredibly kind, and the place was immaculate. They also have a lot of other small baked goods available as well as bottled juices and smoothies. The only downsides: the coffee isn't exceptional, and the prices are a bit steep even for the neighborhood. But if you're looking for a quiet weekend bite, check it out. read more

Padoca Bakery is a super cute place that is perfect for studying/working. It is also the home of the greatest pao de queijos in the entire universe! My girlfriend lives just a block from this bakery, and we spend time here on the weekends regularly to get some work done and study! The place is cute and cozy, with only a few seats available, probably about 15-20 seats to the side of the counter. It has great natural lighting, which is a great vibe for relaxing and working at the same time. The only problem though? No bathroom! if you do not live around the bakery and you're trying to spend a few hours there on your laptop, you might need to use the bathroom (especially if you're drinking coffee). Probably will wanna look for a bathroom and the other restaurants and shops nearby. But of course, let me talk about the PDQs!
