I never like how they do not include both hoisin sauce and sriracha sauce (hot chili sauce) The chicken was like rubber couldn't chew it so trashed it. The lime was so dry not fresh. Stopped by for quick dinner after shopping across the street. My mom and I are Vietnamese so we are particular about our pho but decided to try this spot for the first time. The waiters and waitresses were surprised to see Vietnamese people dining here. First for the service- the staff is very friendly and welcoming but besides the comment on the fact that they don't usually see actual Vietnamese people eating in here, we received our iced waters halfway full and they were also never asked to be refilled. As for the pho bowls themselves, pricing is around the same as other spots but I was surprised that my "small" bowl looked smaller than a "small" bowl from other pho restaurants so if you take pricing to account maybe it is not worth the prices labelled. If you dine at a lot of pho restaurants you would understand the comparison. In addition, the broth was definitely a little bland. It just didn't have the aroma or color that pho broth should have. This review is for NON-PHO items. First time dining here, not busy on a Sunday night. Spoiler alert, even my Vietnamese mother said it was really good. [shocked Pikachu face] The SHRIMP FRIED RICE had excellent flavor to it. It was a simple dish, but done really well with the perfect seasoning. Didn't add Sriracha or nothin. The STEAMED RICE PLATE (with PORK & CHICKEN, house seasoning + fried egg) had excellent flavor to it; it's sort of a pick and mix option where you can choose your protein and the seasoning type. I chose wisely. The entrees came with a chicken broth soup, and even that was quite satisfying, albeit simple. The portions are not huge, and if you are reasonably hungry, you will probably finish your plate. The staff, particularly the slightly older gentleman who took our order, was very nice and I get the impression that they live decent lives and are happy to be working there. The Pho was always delicious. The broth was flavorful without adding sauces and the egg rolls were extra crispy. The amount of meat in the pho is decent. As good as the food was, the prices are not valid for what you get, especially if you have been here for years. I used to visit all the time when this location was my beloved Pho Golden Cow. It changed to Golden Star and while ago and it is still very good. I mostly get delivery from here, though I have dined in & I did pickup the other night. My order is always the same: goi cuon and pho ga. I still think they have one of the better pho ga in the area, and I like that you can choose from beef, veggie, or chicken broth. I usually go with the veggie broth but I got the chicken broth recently for a change. It was flavorful but a bit oily so I'll go back to veggie. The goi cuon is great as well. I look forward to have Golden Star in my pho rotation. read more

For over 10 years, this has been my go-to Pho restaurant above all the rest; however, sadly, after my unpleasant experience on Monday, September 5th, 2022, I will no longer be a recurring customer at this establishment. While the food is delightful, the servers have become extremely lackadaisical in their delivery of service over the past few months. The restaurant was slightly busy; however, after serving three glasses of water to a family who came in after my guest and I were seated, the server came over and asked me and my guest if we were ready to order and if we needed a menu. Assuming this was done because they knew how much I frequented the establishment, I kindly stated that I knew what I wanted to order and didn't need a menu. The food was mediocre this time around (possibly due to the kitchen being near closing), and in the attempt to aid them in their expeditious feat to clear the restaurant for the evening, I noticed they had a QR code payment feature on the receipt and decided to pay through my phone. Upon successful payment of my meal (see attached screenshots), I proceeded to exit the restaurant; however, halfway out the door, I hear the server Luan screen from behind the counter "Noo Noo, come back! No pay!" - Giving them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they weren't yet familiar with this new self-payment system , I turned around and proceeded to walk up to the register to show him my payment confirmation (both via website and email). The server (lacking the capacity to speak proper English), consistently stated "No. No pay! I do not have your payment" and repeated himself several times in an abrasive and aggressive tone. After about 5 minutes of back-and- forth communication exchange, me threatening to call the police and me checking my account to also witness that the transaction at Pho Golden Star had been processed, the server then (AFTER the fact) went into the system to see that the transaction was indeed processed, and then issued a REPRINT receipt (attached) that CLEARLY denotes that the payment had already been cleared. There was no need for me to provide him with my form of payment a second time, and there was no need for this accusatory unfortunate situation to have occurred in the first place. As much as it saddens me to write this, it behooves me to provide an honest account of my experience in hopes that no one else has to undergo the level of embarrassment, lack of respect, and total lack of courtesy that I had to endure after being a faithful consumer of this business over the past 10 years. read more

Their peanut sauce? I could pour this on everything because it's delicious and savory and so flavorful. And I poured it in my vermicelli bowl, no regrets. I ordered delivery from here for Yelp's Big Night In, a fun campaign where myself and other yelpers from all over the country came together to order-in delivery in support of local restaurants. I had never ordered from here before, but the reviews on Yelp looked solid and the delivery time, also very reasonable. I was in a cozy mood, fit for comfort food and so pho was a no brainer. I ordered the Pho Tai Bo Vien (beef noodle soup with eye round steak and meatballs) as well as the Goi Cuon (Vietnamese spring roll.) Everything ordered was delicious! The noodles were soft, fresh and the broth ran deep with flavor. There was just the right amount of meat, noodles, veggies and broth proportionally packed up. The soup along with the spring rolls, filled me right up and lulled me into a nice little nap on the couch. I'm so glad that I took a break from my normal rotation of restaurants that I order from and discovered Pho Golden Star. I have come to Pho Golden Star for years, They were my top rated pho in the area! I would even go at 10 am to have a bowl of Pho (My friend told me the original owners sold Pho Golden Star) and ever since then it has declined. I don't like to give bad reviews, but i will give constructive criticism. I continued to support them although the broth and service was different. But this last week i placed an order through the phone for pick up (i didn't pick it up my brother did) but they gave him the wrong order, i thought maybe they heard me order two and opened a box and it was a shrimp pho - I went back to go return it and told the man it wasn't my order (He was very upset, and yelled at the younger one in vietnamese) i understand accidents happen! This is what made me no longer support them: they gave me the same box they had packaged the shrimp in (i ordered a beef pho) If i would have had a shellfish allergy that would have been dangerous and could have possibly sent me to the hospital. I am a HUGE Pho Fan and this place is good. Service is amazing and the Holiday Music in the background is a plus! Servers were always checking in and ensuring we had a great time. The Crispy Rolls are very crunchy and tasty. The Pho was great, not as oily and greasy as other pho's in the area. The only negative is, it lacked meat. I was looking for the taste of the broth, not weak but not overwhelming and a good solid feel. I was looking for noodles not overcooked but just right. I'm picky about my noodles. I ordered chicken and the pieces seemed large but they were tender and easy to separate. The vegetables were so fresh and again cooked to order not sitting. I'm going back as soon as next week. How have I not reviewed Pho Golden Star?! It's one of my go-to Vietnamese spots. The food is just as good as anything in Eden Center, the big Vietnamese food mecca in Northern Virginia. My regular order is pho (of course) and vermicelli with grilled pork and spring rolls. The food is packaged very well for takeout and is almost as enjoyable at home as it is in the restaurant. Everything I've ordered has been fresh and ready to eat right out of the container. I should probably explore more of the menu, but I can't break away from my classics! They give you the noodles and meats for each dish in a container, as well as separate containers for the broth, and one bag of pho garnish - bean sprouts, mint leaves, jalepenos, and lime. I thoroughly enjoyed my order, which had well done brisket and well done flank (#24). They also gave a small cup of hoison sauce and chili sauce, which was great for adding to broth or for dipping the meat in it. Especially surprised that the pho was just as good as if it were not takeout. The broth was delivered super hot and fresh. The food is great, and the prices aren't too bad, but the owner tried to overcharge me for food I didn't order, and even after I pointed it out and he corrected the food order, he continues to insist on charging me for three Ginger Ales ($2.50ea) that I didn't order or request.
