Phoenix has been opened for quite awhile in its new Temple City location on Las Tunas Drive. I wasn't too sure about the location, since there aren't too many restaurants in the surrounding area of Las Tunas, but it actually worked out quite nicely. Parking can be found on the street in front of the restaurant, in the tiny lot behind the restaurant, as well as on the residential streets. It's not too big of an issue. The restaurant is fairly big, with a good number of tables. There are also a few tables situated "outside" as well. Ambience is pretty nice; very modern looking restaurant with some muted Oriental undertones (not sure if that really makes sense). Service is very quick and efficient. Most dishes are not as family-style friendly as I expected. They come individually with a side of rice, so if you order four different dishes, you can expect to get four bowls of rice. Food: Fish fillet: Very natural and healthy dish. Fish is not cooked with too many ingredients, so you're really able to taste the freshness of the fish. My friends really enjoyed this dish; I tried to minimize how much I ate of it since I wasn't sure if I'd get an allergic reaction - but from what I did taste, it was really good. Walnut shrimp: One of my favorite dishes! Especially from Tasty Garden. I think the quality is not as good as TG, but I definitely appreciated the taste of the overall dish. The shrimp is a lot smaller, with not as much of the outer breading to give it that crispy texture that I like. There was also a lot of sauce on the plate, coating everything in that sweet cream sauce, which is not as preferred. But it was tasty and I definitely liked the taste. Veggies: Nothing special about this dish. Good flavor, cooked naturally and healthily. Pork chop in tomato sauce: I wasn't sure what to expect when ordering this dish. I thought it would be more of the Hong Kong Café styled dishes, but it came with rice on the side of a few pieces of pork chop smothered in tomato sauce. I really liked the taste of the sauce. Slightly tangy with enough sweetness to bring out the flavor in the pork chop. They tossed in a good amount of tomatoes as well. Pork chops were pretty thick, coming in smaller chunks to allow for easier eating. Egg Waffles: A must try! The aroma of the waffles as they were baking ... amazing! We mainly got this dish for the kids at the table (who enjoyed it soo much), but I had to give it a try after seeing them happily munching on the waffle. Very good flavor - not too sweet, definitely one of the better waffles I've tasted from the restaurants in the SGV. These are more chewy that crispy, with much more batter and filling than some empty shelled waffles I've tried. Drinks: Mixed fruit tapioca: My go-to drink at Phoenix! Definitely more pricey than I would like, but the quality and taste is amazing. They gave me a good amount of mixed fruits - drink is pretty sweet, so I usually like to drink it after the meal as dessert. Barley with lime: This was recommended on the menu, and my friends said they really enjoy this drink. I didn't get to try, but it definitely looked good watching their toddler gulp it down! tl;dr - Overall, a very decent Hong Kong styled meal in Temple City. Came here to rave about their Thai style seafood noodle soup. I've tried other locations but here they serve the the best by far. If you like your noodles spicy and tangy--you should give it a try. I've been a long time fan (since 2007) of their tropical ice tea. Arctic clam in chili oil and garlic fried chicken are good late night snacks . They have wide range of desserts--some of my fave are the egg waffles, mixed fruit delight, and black sticky rice with young coconuts. Definitely the price of their food is a bit higher compared to other Chinese(Hong Kong) restaurants. This is literally my all time favorite place to get dessert. Their mango mochi roll is so good! The inside is fresh mango. There is a thin layer of sweet custard like thing around the mango. I always order the HK waffle, durian tapioca (guilty pleasure) and their pre-made egg tarts (a bit pricey but great to snack on)! The employees are sweet and they're never too busy so you'll get seated right away. On my most recent visit (before quarantine), I noticed they had a patio to the right of the store! Adorable! Parking may be a hassle because I'm not aware whether or not they have a back parking lot so I usually park on the Las Tunas. Overall, I've had decent experiences and not one bad one. read more

The chow fun noodles were mushy and bland, the deep fried pork chops with spicey salt had no seasoning, and the orange chicken turned into tiny chicken strips. They have no more options without rice. I dont need rice with every plate i order. Bring back just the entrees with no rice. The plates are half rice and small portions of the actual entree. We had a photo shoot at the studio across the street, so it's super convenient to cross the street for some drinks and dinner afterwards. The drinks are refreshing and unique. I didn't try my son's almond tofu, but my fungus drink (I know that makes it sound bad, but the white fungus is the essential ingredient in this drink mix) really hit the spot. Wanton noodle was good, but not the best I've had. My wife seemed to have enjoyed her duck noodle, and my son devoured his Alaskan sea bass. Service was a bit slow, as the servers seemed to spend more time goofing around with each other than attending to the customers. I had to walk to the register to pay at the end because they didn't notice that we're waiting for our check. I ordered to go there last night, Singapore pan fried noodles tasted so bland, very few curry taste n even the rice noodles are half white but not all yellow, I doubted the chef forgot to put salt too, braised pork belly has very very few preserved veggies in it, the Buddha mixed veggie was also very bland. I spent like $50 there for three to go food and they all tasted worse than usual. This particular Phoenix is a walking distance from my place but I will not go there again. This location is nicely designed and built. The open kitchen concepts can have me stare and be intrigued for long periods of time. Patio seating is nice as well, offering a back alley kinda feel. Food is decent, sometimes it is a hit or miss depending on which cook is on shift. Noodle Soups are good, but I keep on getting old flat noodles lol, haven't gotten the silk soft fresh "fun" noodles in awhile, guess the inventory turnover ain't that quick at this location. Drinks are good, to go packaged items are standard. Parking is street parking, be sure to call ahead of time so avoid waiting. Service is your standard Asian restaurant, don't expect stiller service. This location seems to be my favorite only cause they are fairly new and its so close to home. I bring friends and family here to eat or like today i come and just do work on my laptop. Phoenix Kitchen in Temple City is the newest branch of a food boutique that was established nearly 50 years ago. It is part of the Phoenix company's new concept, advertised as a "US-version dai pai dong". That description is not to be taken too literally, because all it means is homestyle Cantonese cooking with a Western-style open kitchen. The restaurant facility is actually indoors and not an open-air food stall with folding tables and plastic stools. The menu is the same as the Arcadia branch, including simple Cantonese small fry dishes, porridge, soup noodles, BBQ meats, cold platter, and some Western appetizers. It's missing Cantonese classics such as clay pots and seafood, but made up by following the dai pai dong philosophy of affordable meals (entrees under $10) cooked-to-order using traditional Guangdong recipes. Phoenix Kitchen's specialties consist of stir-fried dishes, which are skillfully cooked in large steel woks with noticeable "wok hei". The distinct sooty rich flavor and smoky aroma found in Phoenix' sauteed green bean with mushroom and sausage dish exemplifies the dai pai dong-style high heat stir-fry cooking technique. This dish was not cooked too oily. One item that I highly recommend at Phoenix is their cold salt-baked chicken. It's boneless and skinless, the shredded meat is tender and savory after being marinated in light salt and vinegar seasoning. I am also a fan of the Hakka braised pork belly which was prepared with thick slices of lean pork belly simmered in mustard pickled greens. Both savory dishes are great for pairing with rice to neutralize the saltiness. Although the Phoenix chain is primarily known for their Cantonese desserts, their homestyle kitchen food is actually solid for LA standards. However, if there's anything this branch needs work on, it would be to improve on their service. The servers are inexperienced as admitted by the manager and the restaurant is currently understaffed, so expect requests to be fulfilled with poor attitude and put aside at least 10 minutes to pay for the bill. read more

I ordered a Shredded Chicken Noodle soup for dinner. As I was eating it at home, I noticed that there were shards of something in the soup. It looked like small speckled egg shells. Then as I was digging through my noodles and spinach looking for more eggshells, I found a small caterpillar in the folds of the spinach. I immediately stopped eating, spit out what was in my mouth and drove back to the store. The same employee who helped me at 10:14pm asked me what was wrong. I asked for a fork and proceeded to pick the caterpillar out of the bowl and show me. He offered me another bowl. I'm beyond disgusted. This was my first and last time eating here. The County of Los Angeles gave this restaurant grading of A. They have made a huge mistake. I can only imagine what other disgusting dirt and bugs end up in other customers food. New location in Temple City! There are soo many Phoenix restaurants nearby already but I guess yay for having an even closer location to my house? hehe. This new location is quite modern and nice...it even has a little water fall thing outside when you walk in from the parking lot. This is the biggest Phoenix in the area as well (probably 4x bigger than the Arcadia location). There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. One problem I can foresee is parking. The parking lot is kind of squishy and you have to enter from a back alley. If it were full, it would be very difficult to get your car in and out. I would probably just find street parking. Another thing is that there was a sign saying that the parking lot closes at 10pm...but the restaurant closes at midnight or later? Not sure I understand why that is... Overall, this will definitely be my go-to location for when I'm craving grass jelly tapioca or black sesame dessert nomnom :) read more

15 of my relatives and I are happy campers after visiting this new Phoenix location. I think between all of us we ordered nearly every dessert! My dad's favorite was the durian rolls... Stinky! I liked the black sesame ice cream with silky tofu and tapioca the best as it wasnt too sweet. My second favorite was the mango shaved ice even though the mangos werent quite ripe and still super tangy. Note that the shaved ice isnt the super fluffy snow type of shaved ice. Nonetheless it was tasty and the condensed milk and simple syrup made it irresistible. My aunt liked the black sticky rice with coconut as it was sweet and aromatic. We also ordered the fish ball rice noodle soup which my grandpa devoured. The dining area was spacious and we didnt have to wait for a table. Service was friendly and just needs a little bit of time for the kinks to be worked out. We got to meet one of the owners whom was very nice and accommodating. Well anyways, I came here on a Monday afternoon for a quick lunch. This place took me by surprise. Environment - wow, what can I say. It is the biggest Phoenix I have ever been to. I guess it's called "kitchen" for a reason. Their food menu is a bit bigger than you other Phoenix, but similar drink menu. There are many table choices for a nice lunch meal, or even a quick sit-down drink. The decor is is a cross between ancient China and modern world to me; pretty nice. Roomy. Nice ambience. Service - waitresses are very attentive and responsive. One thing I wish they did was offer water in the beginning of the meal.... haha but I guess i was my fault for not ordering a drink... Kind people they are. Food - I ordered a slicked prime rib with chili sauce. It was very salty where I think I felt the seasoning on the meat... although there was moderate sized amount of white rice on the side, it was not enough to compensate for the salt. Lots of oil on this. I wouldn't recommend this dish. My friend ordered a house noodle that came with duck and a bunch of other random stuff. It was really good and flavorful; you can taste the flavor of the wok they used haha. I would come back here for the environment :) pretty nice and new restaurant for Temple City. read more
