Whenever I come in to buy, (take note I'm a regular here) she will look at me from head to toe and frown as if I did something bad to her. I have been keeping this comment to myself, but I got so frustrated with her service when I came in to claim my free piroshki through their punch card. I ordered a cup of split pea soup which is $4.99 and ask her if I can use my punch card for the free piroshky. She wasn't listening and she proceeded to charge me for $12.12. I asked them twice that I will use my punch card for the free piroshky, then the lady in the back asked me "Can you pay now?". I felt force to pay because there was a line behind me so I paid the $12.12, when I can just be paying $4.99 plus tax. It was frustrating and disheartening to be treated like this from someone that you actually like the food they're serving. I don't normally leave bad reviews, but this one really pushed me. I can't even enjoy and savor the food because of how I felt when I was buying them. That old lady is like the "soup nazi" from Seinfeld. There are also instances where I placed an order through phone for two chicken dumplings, but of course she wasn't listening. When we came to grab our order, she only made one and we had to wait for 15 mins for another one. But we were patient and still nice to her, even tip them cause their food is good. I don't think I will ever want to come back to this branch. Wow these are really good!! There is a Piroshki x2 by my place that isn't that great. The one downtown is insane with tourists. This place I did on Doordash and they were tasty and well made. Out of the three the potato and cheese was my favorite. I refrigerated the salmon for lunch. I took a bit and I'm weird with salmon and cream cheese I like mine cold. Kind of the same as crab, I grew up around the PNW and caught my own crab so we would clean it, cook it and fridge it for later that day. Always are it cold so hot is odd for me. My daughter wanted to try this Russian place for awhile. The woman behind the counter was nice and took our order. She filled us in what the pastry was all about. Eating it I realized she had given me the wrong one and when I we up to the counter to let her know she just insisted I had ordered the broccoli and potato. Popped in here to pick up afternoon "pick me up snacks" for a short product training. They had a large selection to choose from. They offered to heat everything up. I ordered mostly sweet/fruit pastries and didn't have them warmed up. What was not already individually packaged they did for me and labeled them. They didn't have large pastry boxes. I always get good from there, this time i order a slice of cake that I've never tried, the lady who helped went to the owner and asked how much to cut from the cake, the cake was not sliced - very deceiving practice since most of cakes are sliced. All with that shiny slightly egg washed exteriors and formations of cute festive flowers or braids from the scraps. Around $5.50 a pop and they offer coffee, soft drinks, water. A very in and out process. Very few seats, like maybe 6. I find the 3 seater table in the back and post up. Good selection of condiments by me. Dijon is my choice. So one cold winter morning, I decided to stop in and grab a treat for breakfast... The piroshki selection is pretty good, but they also have a case full of hand-made sweets, and they offer borsch, pierogi, and fresh fruit as well. Seating is limited, but I'm assuming most people in the area stop by and pick up a bite to-go. I've been on a mission to find the BEST coffee by my office, and Piroshki on Madison is definitely in the top three. They use Caffe Vita coffee and it makes all the difference. I decided to order a mocha -- they use dark chocolate syrup and real whipped cream (yummm). I also decided to order the spinach, mushroom, and cheese piroshki... and it sent me on a piroshki-loving spiral! Since that visit, I've returned to ordered the Bavarian sausage, ham, egg & cheese, and beef & cabbage piroshki, AND the shortbread cookies. OMG. Definitely one of my favorite places to eat on First Hill- I've been stopping in for a quick bite for years now and they are great as always! Highly recommend going early either mid morning or mid-afternoon for the best selection. If you go an hour before close- they will still have delicious food but less to choose from. I've only had one disappointing experience and it was grabbing a to-go corned beef piroshki just before closing. The lesson there was go earlier. Though the name is Piroshki - the menu has much more to offer. Their soup is wonderful and then there's the whole dessert case... oh my! I haven't tried anything else because I'm usually in a hurry and have my favorites. But I hear great things about the pirogies so they are on the wishlist. I'm not sure it's possible to have a favorite piroshki here. But several come to mind: beef and cheddar, broccoli and cheddar, broccoli and potato, Bavarian sausage and if I'm feeling really decadent the smoked salmon and cream cheese. Favorite bakery treats by far the baklava and the angel tears cake.... oh that meringue topping! Their location is very central just on Madison between Virginia Mason and Swedish First Hill campuses. As an employee in the area, I have enjoyed their pastries for almost a decade. I confess I am not as amorous or knowledgeable about their savories, and have been remiss in trying their (non piroshki?) lunch specials b/c I work nights and am not in the area in time to enjoy them. If I remember other reviewers correctly, they offer items like stroganoff and borscht which are praised in other comments, so they must be worth it. I think my upbringing has my meat and herb-vegetable bready comfort food preferences tending toward the denser/crust heavy German Mid West runza/bierox fare of middle America. But I am resolved to branch out and test that theory. I am, however, in love with their sweets. They have really good cakes, cookies, pastry piroshkis, and other desserts that really hit the spot. Their goodies are obviously hand made, and they offer a wide variety. Whatever you call the bread/roll pastry dough, it's like a cross between sweet bread and phyllo that is so light and lovely, it is indescribable and delightful. I will not list my favourites as a precaution against the competition for them; but I usually buy them in bulk for my co-workers and/or as offerings for my hardworking medical staff when I have appointments. They never fail to bring delight to the recipients; and if I'm lucky (or greedy), I have a few to myself for the next day or so. read more

I love this place! It's definitely super convenient being very close to both home and work, and Piroshkis make such an easy, filling, affordable, and tasty lunch. There are always the same two ladies both manning the cashier and making piroshkis and they are very sweet. The beef and cabbage is my go-to, but I've also tried the ham and cheese, beef and cheese, and the beef and mushroom and they are all very tasty. The best thing I had there was actually the pierogis. Warning tho that it takes 10-20 minutes for them to make it and your breath will be the definition of bad breath afterwards (and from personal experience, there is no breath mint on the market that can combat the smell). So maybe best to not eat it before a big meeting or a hot date. They have awesome coffee and a punch card for a free piroshki :) read more
