When I don't know what to get for dinner, I will come here and order a chicken pot pie with 1/2 mashed potatoes and 1/2 corn. They have the best corn! I love that Door Dash now has them so I don't even have to leave my condo. On this morning, I was driving home from Orange County. My car just ended up here. I ordered the Boss 2.0 as it was still morning. It is a little heartier than a quiche. Eggs, bacon, potatoes and a side of maple syrup to dunk your pie. Be careful with the pie and dunking it into the syrup. The butter crust is so flaky that I had my pie drop into the syrup multiple times. Since I had nowhere to be, I ate here. First time! I enjoyed the experience. Good music. Quiet. Ashley made me an amazing mocha with almond milk. I was pleasantly surprised that they do not charge extra for almond or oat milk. I'm honestly beyond frustrated with this place. If I'm spending $17+ on a small lunch--like a pot pie and a side--I should be able to pay with a simple $20 bill. The fact that you refuse to accept cash is ridiculous and completely out of touch. This isn't COVID-era policy anymore--there's no excuse for turning away legal tender. What makes it worse is that it seems like the same issue carries over to the ice cream shop next door (which I've heard is under the same ownership). So not only are your prices premium for very small portions, but you're also limiting how customers can pay. That's not customer-friendly--it's just controlling. And let's talk about the experience: high prices, no cash accepted, and no usable internet. You have Wi-Fi but won't share it with paying customers? That's honestly a slap in the face. You're basically saying "come spend your money here, but don't expect any convenience or basic accommodations." For a place charging these kinds of prices, the least you could do is make the experience easy and welcoming. Instead, it feels restrictive, overpriced, and disappointing. Definitely not worth it. I didn't realize they had a full coffee bar and now that I know, I would for sure come back next time I'm looking for a local coffee spot in the area. My husband and I stopped by this place on a Saturday around 5pm and there was no line. We came down to San Diego from Orange County for the weekend and wanted to stop by somewhere where we could have a small bite to eat before our actual dinner plans. We shared the Green Hog and Cheese pot pie, and it was fantastic! The crust was soft and flaky, and the filling was generous--they definitely don't skimp on the meat. Each bite was hearty and flavorful. I wish I had one full pie to myself because it was just so damn good. The only downside was the parking. There's no dedicated parking lot, so we had to park near an apartment complex a few streets away and walk, but it wasn't too bad. Pot pies, along with mashed potatoes and mac and cheese, are probably the ultimate in comfort food. Interestingly, you cannot find pot pies easily (the old chain, Marie Callender's was big on them, but good luck finding those restaurants any more). Even more interesting, this pot pie shop is less than a mile from the San Diego Chicken Pie Shop, which has been making simple but excellent pot pies for about 200 years. The pot pies here at Pop Pie are very, very good and are much more gourmet or at least far complex than the ones at the Chicken Pie Shop. They come out about two seconds after you order them. The crust is a dark golden brown and I feared they were overcooked but they weren't. They know what they are doing. We tried three different ones: The Green Hog and Cheese, the Classic Chicken, and the Steak and Ale. The Green Hog and Cheese is, I believe, the most popular pie here and for good reason. It's got a very interesting blend of different peppers, pork, and cheese. It's excellent, very flavorful, and really not too spicy at all. The Classic Chicken is, well, just fine but not all that interesting. The Steak and Ale was very nice. I didn't like it as much as the Green Hog but I enjoyed it. The crust on each pie was excellent. One pie should be sufficient for most appetites. They kindly allowed us to do a half portion of the mashed potatoes (very good) and the creamed corn (it was ok). The potatoes had a very pleasant dumpling consistency. There is plenty of seating inside and a little bit of counter seating outside. Their sweet pies looked amazing but they don't have ice cream and Stella Jean's is literally next door so you have some dessert options. Well worth a visit. read more

It's been a couple of years since I did take out at the Pop Pie in University Heights mainly due to the price of food then. Now it's even more expensive but the quality of the food has dropped. Here's what I got and how they turned out: - Beef pie: Under cooked and under seasoned pie dough, beef filling was also under seasoned and mushy - Mashed potato side: there was a dollop. That's it and was a third of what you got previously - Key lime pie: flavorless dough that was too dense. The key lime filling was good but overall the desert does not justify the cost. Didn't have much to compare it to because the only chicken pot pies I ever eat are the microwaveable Marie calendar ones, but these are much better tasting. There wasn't much service being done as the pies are already made, so I received my order less than a minute after ordering. The sides do not come with the pie, but have to be ordered separately. Good amount of chicken and the puff pastry was nice and flaky. Taste: 4/5 Carmelised Banana Pie ($7): I opted for the Carmelised banana pie a la mode (w/ a scoop of ice cream +$3) and typically that comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream but I upgraded to the Ube flavor with the Pandesal crumble. The pie was not what I expected and I found it to be very underwhelming. It has the exact same taste and texture of a Vietnamese banana cake (banh chuoi nuong) iykyk, but isn't done as well. I don't think it works as a pie, but will be back again to try the salted caramel apple crumble.
