My struggle with moving to California has been finding a solid pizza place in SoCal. Thankfully this place has pretty decent pizza that I wouldn't mind eating again when the craving hits. I did feel the tomato's was a bit too sour and peppery and that the crust needed a bit more cooking as I couldn't taste the base. The service tho needs work. We were discussing what we wanted to eat and trying to decide appetizer or not and what toppings and the waitress kept rushing us to make a decision. They should probably also order some Dominos or Pizza hut to find out the basics of an ordinary pizza. If you're in the mood for some deep dish around LA, head to MASA where they serve you REAL deep dish pizza. My friend has lived in Long Beach for years and we wanted to try something that she hadn't had. The only thing left really is the turnstile of pizza places or trendy bars that seem to rotate through 2nd Street on a regular basis. The Pizza Press was empty which kind of scared her so we opted for Rance's where the old BJ's used to be. Lots of sports bar charm with an outdoor patio that's awesome in the mildest August I've ever experienced. The waitress was very friendly. She helped my friend recall what used to be at that space and told us that this is their third location in LA. Then she helped us decide on a thin crust medium best seller with meatballs. Thin or thick, they tell you it's a 30 minute wait for your pie. Luckily, my pal had the foresight to grab a spinach feta walnut salad which we shared and it was excellent considering I don't eat dressing and still liked it. The walnuts have an awesome sweet crunch to them which contrasts nicely with the cheese. We didn't mind the wait since we just kept gabbing. Everything got stars on the above, but the pizza was a little too rich to get the extra 4th. Crust is great, but with all those toppings you feel very weighted down after only one slice. My friend didn't care for the meatballs. She said they were too bland. I caught a bit of spice to them and didn't mind them at all, but it was just too rich. I stumbled across Rance's Chicago Pizza. What had sold me to go here was a photo that was shown of some cheesy pepperoni pizza. it looked really good. So I decided to Order 1 Large Pepperoni Pizza 6 piece Buffalo Wins(standard size wings) -for to go- TOTAL came out to $41 or $42 dollars. WOW. that was a shocker. So expensive. So I thought that it better be good for how expensive it was. And after opening the Box of Disappointment. I was so Bummed. I saw a the RED SEA OF SAUCE, poured over what looked like a Pizza. IT LOOKED NOTHING CLOSE TO WHAT I THOUGHT I WAS GETTING, FROM THE PICTURE I SAW FROM GOOGLE MAPS. As shown in the picture I provided. I also took a picture of how it looked after scrapping off all that sauce. "Where's the pepperoni?"... I can't believe what I paid $42 for. As far as the taste goes. it was alright, but I don't think I could enjoy at as much as I would have, if it looked how I had I thought it would be. I Dont think ill be coming here again. Its unfortunate to not only be let down on what you thought you were getting, but even more so of a disappointment to have paid so much for it. Wow talking about the worst service we ever experienced and I promise we're not even exaggerating. My husband is a GM of a busy restaurant and owners of a bar catering business, so we definitely know about hospitality and customer service. We've heard so many good things about this place, reviews are great, instagram is amazing... you got us in! Great job, but too bad your service did not match your marketing skills. Such a disappointment. If you don't have a friendly face to serve your food then you have nothing. Funny how the sign said Please Seat Yourself, but ALL the tables were dirty and you can see that they left the rag on the table. The first person (curly dirty blond hair female) that said anything to us said "Excuse Me" to one of my kids because apparently we were in her way? No hello, no hi, no smile. Nothing. So when as we were waiting at a dirty table, we were patient, and besides we were waiting on our friends. I can't even tell you how many servers past us. Holy anchovy!!! We finally found a legit Chicago deep dish in Southern California! My hubby is from Chicago so he is hellaaaaaa picky when it comes to pizza. That said, we've visited several places who boasts deep dish and they literally have no clue what that even is. Let me tell you, a Chicago deep dish is not a thick-crusted pizza, it's a pie. So think of a pie, filled with cheese, sausage, crushed tomatoes, marinara sauce. And here at Rance's, they know how to make a Chicago deep dish pizza! YES!!!! The crusted is buttery, flakey, filled with tons of cheese. The sausage is delicious and flavorful, and the sauce is chunky and yummy!!! The only negative is that it was kinda greasy and the mushrooms made it too runny/juicy, but other than that, it was pretty. damn. good! And you know it's legit when it takes 45 minutes to bake, just like Lou Malnattis and Giordanos. The tavern style, which is the thin crust version is really good, but more on the greasy side. You also gotta try the maple bourbon chicken wings, they are phenomenal. And the pork meatballs were bangin! Yes, the food was great. Now let's talk about the service. The hostesses were a hotmess. I called to make a reservation for 10 at 6pm on a Sunday and was told they don't take reservations. We showed up at 6p and one hostess said we should've called because it was going to be a 45 minute wait. Smdh. Well, we we were celebrating my hubby's bday, and it started raining so we certainly weren't going anywhere else. About 35 minutes of waiting and a few drinks at the bar later, I checked back with the 2nd hostess has no idea we were waiting for a table because the 1st hostess never told her and left! I'd give RANCE's * * * * four stars, it would or could get a 5th star if the prices were lower, i that it's somewhat expensive, but I guess so is rent in Belmont Shores too. The pizza is tasty, getting the Chicago styled deep dish as well as a pan pizza. If you like Chicago styled pizza pies, this is probably among the best I've had in So Cal, and it's quite delicious. I think it rivals a few of the spots up in Nor Cal's Bay Area in San Francisco, beating Little Star and similar to Paxti's, but nowhere near the legendary Zachary's in the East Bay (Berkeley and Oakland) which is even hard for pizzeria's in Chicago, IL to defeat, quite frankly. But regardless, it was so good! My friend and I got the small stuffed house special (sausage, green pepper, mushrooms). 4 slices for ~$19. I thought the toppings were okay, but what made the pizza was flakey crust and globs of cheese! Ssooo good. The pizza does look small coming out, but 2 slices per person is just the right portion. First time here.. we weren't sure if we seat ourselves or if there is a host working.. we walked in and THEN finally greeted by a host who then sat us.. from that point on it was DOWNHILLLL!
