Really enjoyed this place - the service is great, comfortable atmosphere, and lots of parking available (this became very important to me after I drove around Castro for 15 mins looking for parking and then finally giving up and deciding to eat somewhere else). I came here two nights in a row! The first night I ordered take out. I had the beef sukiyaki and then teriyaki chicken. The sukiyaki was a little too sweet but had good flavors. The teriyaki chicken was very good. I got to go and requested they use paper containers (instead of styrofoam or plastic) they agreed and packaged everything nicely for me and even put it all into a cardboard box. The second night I came here I did a sit down dinner with a friend and ordered the volcano roll and a chicken egg udon. Both were very good and I would definitely recommend. We stayed and chatted a bit after dinner (the restaurant was not crowded so they were not in a rush to have us leave) I was a little disappointed they did not refill our water (I understand this is not a Michelin star restaurant where they refill even after some evaporates but at least once during a 90 minute dinner??) Overall a good experience and would definitely come back again :) read more

TOTAL BILL was just under $50 (including tax) for these 3 dishes. The RAW FISH were fresh and delicious. ONO was DE-lious (super white tuna). There is a small sushi bar with ASIAN SUSHI CHEFS behind the counter. The CHIRASHI bowl (not the Korean kind) was a decent size with about 7 different types of fish, plus OCTOPUS and SHRIMP. Looks just like the picture on the menu. Skip the OCTOPUS....broiled and bland. I will be ordering this again. RICE: YES, I have to talk about the SUSHI RICE here because I've had terrible sushi rice before and that is just wrong! Happy to say, it is AWESOME here :D The CARPACCIO (I believe that's what the appetizer is called) I wouldn't care to order again. The FISH of course was fresh and good, its the light clear sauce (MANGO?) I didn't care for...my dinner mate loved it though and contemplated ordering another. FUNKY ROLL -- 5 pieces, HAMACHI, KANI, UNAGI, CUCUMBER, TOBIKO, with spicy mayo, unagi sauce, and MACADAMIA NUTS was good! This one I would order again. Wandered here on a Sunday evening to enjoy a simple sushi meal with husband. The 2-roll 1-appetizer meal was absolutely not simple! It was over the top! The 2 specialty rolls we ordered--high five and flaming dragon--were extravagant, dazzling, filling, and delicious. Even the jalapeños cream cheese appetizer--a combination I normally frowned upon--turned out to be interesting and tasty. The menu spots a lot of "Las Vegas" types of rolls--topped with fried tempura, piling on colorful fishes, and drizzled with a creamy mayo-y sauce. Therefore many specialty rolls fall within the $12-16 range. But they are big and flamboyant eye candies, and I think they are actually pretty good value for the taste and size. I have not had a roll I didn't like here. Love this place -- especially enjoy our impromptu visit on a day when it is not crazy busy. I asked the server if the chicken katsu was white meat. I even repeated by asking if it was chicken breast, sensing she might not understand me. She confirmed, "Yes, white meat." So, I ordered it. Let me say this...it was not white meat. I went to signal someone else, but was having difficulty getting someone's attention (I did not want to try to explain this again to the same person). A woman sitting at the counter talking to a couple of friends saw me and immediately got up and came over. I said this didn't look like white meat chicken and she confirmed that they in fact do NOT have white meat. She asked what I would like instead and I said a California roll. This place is fine, pricy yet nothing special about the food nor the service. They charge over $20 for a bento box which I can get the same thing for $15. Can't really figure out the reason they put such a high price, the portion isn't bigger than general, there's no secure sauce to make the food tastes extremely special, the service isn't outstanding, this place is just like all other Japanese restaurant, why such a high price?! read more

This review is for lunch take-out only. We order here a lot because of its convenience. Over the past year, I've noticed the dishes have lacked consistency. I usually order the bento box or Megabyte roll, and sometimes the fish seems fresh, other times the flavor is bland. I've also ordered the donburi bowl, udon, and other specialty rolls. The blossom roll is my other go-to order. There is a huge variety of menu options to choose from, which is nice for a large group of people. This is a hidden gem in Silicon Valley. I always complain that there aren't as many good restaurants in the South Bay as there are in the San Francisco and Berkeley areas. They has the best, and freshest sashimi in the area and are very reasonably priced. Although, I have to say, I was very disappointed with the Toro - it was not very fresh, but it was plated very well with edible gold. The hamachi (yellowtail) sashimi is to die for. Hands down, it is probably the best quality in the area. The fresh salmon sashimi is also the best I have had in the area. The maguro (tuna) is only so-so, but it's because the hamachi and salmon are so fantastic. The rolls are very good as well. I enjoy the agedashi tofu too, but the nabayaki is way too salty. I highly recommend the hamachi and salmon sashimi, the sweet heart roll, catepillar roll, and soft shelled crab. Service is usually pretty good. My friends and I tend to have birthday dinners here. read more

I got the lunch bento box. This was the primary reason for my 4 stars because the service was great. The variety of food was good and the price was fine. My only issue was 1 of my items (the chicken teriyaki) was a smaller portion compared to other places I've been to in the past. To their defense I believe the salad was a larger portion and they also included a scoop of potato salad that I don't see at other spots. 4/5 for now. I think it's your typical restaurant. I've started a quest for the best sashimi/sushi combination in the South Bay and this was a good start. The tuna had a perfect size and cut, the temperature was the right kind of cool and the texture had enough 'give' but still retained a smoothness in the bite. The nigiri selection was an adequate amount and again they did well on the size. The California roll was on the smaller size which is perfect. The roll shouldn't be the highlight of the meal. I think. I also like the miso soup they provided with the meal. Smooth and creamy with the right amount of broth. The restaurant was busy but it has plenty of seating options and I was seated immediately at 12:45 on a Friday. The staff are quick and friendly without getting in the way. This place is tucked away between Best Buy and 31flavors, making it both harder to find and a natural place to stop for dinner. It's absolutely worth it as a dedicated destination. Very fresh sushi/sashimi plus a wide variety of inventive rolls. Not a fan of sushi? No problem! The menu is very comprehensive and includes tempura, udon, teriyaki and (one of my favorites) katsu. All are available as a full dinner including miso, salad, and steamed rice. I find it to be a bit too much food so I either share the main dish or give the salad to my dinner companion, and still share! Combination dinners are also available - definitely share worthy The review is missing a star because the service can be spotty and occasionally a special request or a substitution comes out wrong. There is a small sushi bar for those who like to sit with squished knees. Open for lunch, Then Closes Until 5:00 for dinner service until 9:00 or later. Fair prices, beer, sake, softdrinks, tea, fresh sushi with generous portions, a wide variety of cooked meals, and fanciful rolls all make this one of my favorite choices for dinner. read more

I'm a sushi fanatic, make a lot of super high quality sushi at home. It is easy (couple years practice and watching master chefs) to learn to make sushi at home that's far better than restaurant made but VERY difficult and far beyond my skill to make even mediocre sushi at the SPEED that it is made by a pro sushi chef. I'm very impressed with the sushi at Satsuma. It is my go-to place for Sushi. They are making solid four stars level traditional Japanese style with real dedication across a wide ranging menu. Service is excellent. Fish is high quality, very fresh. I think they are in the top five Sushi restaurants in South Bay. Sharing my thoughts: obviously we love their large sampler plates of sashimi and their nigiri sushi plates We love their Musashi, Megabyte, and Flaming Dragon, Spider, various Ebi rolls, and Blossom rolls. I'll add more recommendations as we return and try their all their rolls. We love rolls w/salmon but thought their Salmon Paradise roll was just too much salmon flavor (and mayo) all in one roll. Their Toro (fatty tuna) nigiri is the *bomb* - sooo good. Their Unagi (grilled BBQ freshwater eel) is one of the very best I've had, and I've tasted Unagi from at least 30 different sushi restaurants. Also I was thankful their sushi chef was willing to make Spicy Hotate in my requested style (Gunkan style w/slice avocado, spicy mayo, tabiko); it was fantastic! Also their aged Agedashi Tofu is fabulous. Their Rainbow roll is only a solid B (with imitation crab, etc.) but then I've strict standard because I learned to make Rainbow Rolls by watching the masters at Austin's Musashino Sushi Dokoro. Noting the only reason I'm not rating full five stars is come on, I reserve that top rating for Sushi making that is on the level I find it in good Sushi restaurants in Japan. read more

My #1 sushi spot! i've been coming here for the past 4+ years. (Coming in AT LEAST once a month) The environment is great, the food is good, and the workers can be forgetful at times, but still gives great service. I don't blame them for being forgetful because it only happens on the busy days. The pricing is pretty decent and it tastes great. Not the largest variety but still satisfies all my cravings. I can't complain. If you sit at the sushi bar, they tend to be a lot more attentive. I would highly recommend coming in with a friend or by yourself and sitting at the sushi bar for the experience. I've been to almost every sushi place in the bay area but when it comes to pricing and comfort, this is the place to go. Also, there is a Baskin Robbins next door. This was one of my favorite place. The food always high quality and they used right amount of condiment. The yosenabe here has heavenly taste. Despite how bad my day is, that seafood soup always bring me up. It's like seafood soup of youth. Until one day, they used over frozen seafood for my soup. It broke my heart. I don't know where to get good food anymore. If I were a chef, I would never serve that to the customer. We've been coming here for a few years and the food has been tasty and the service kind. The sashimi has been very good, always fresh with generous-sized pieces. Bento boxes and entrées are fairly consistently good. One of the dishes I particularly enjoy there is the spicy chicken. While I like my spicy food spicier, the flavor of the sauce is so good, I have no complaints. That particular dish is also a generous portion size. It is very busy during the lunch hour, a testament to the restaurant, so we come as soon as they open. read more

Never in my decades of eating sushi have I seen someone cut sashimi into hunks they way they did. It made the fish difficult to chew and very off-putting. All my friends got the dinner combo, where you can get three items from a set list and it comes with miso soup, salad, California rolls and rice. I think the three item combo is about $20 (there's a two item for a little less). It's a ton of food. I think most everyone brought leftovers home. I went outside the norm and got the salmon lovers roll and some tuna nigiri. I liked the salmon lovers - raw salmon on top, and salmon tempura inside. It had a little bit of spicy mayo but wasn't too spicy for me. The tuna was fresh too. I also tried a little bit of my friend's food - soft shell crab, beef sukiyaki and the CA rolls. Everything was pretty good. Green tea was complimentary and hot and delicious. Service was fine. And price point is about what I expect for Japanese food. If you want a mediocre not so good sushi spot this is the place for. I ordered a bento box with sliced teriyaki beef as one of the choices. I assumed that because I was at a sushi restaurant i would get a nice cut of beef sliced up, was i wrong it was the thinnest and cheapest cut of beef money could buy. My wife ordered the same thing we both could not finish because it was not what we expected and not so good compared to other places. I had the pleasure of being asked to lunch today with Flor D. and our mutual good friend Kim. It's always a good time when these two are with me so I knew lunch would be FUN! They both suggested this place which was cool because its less then 3 miles from work. Arrived at 11:45am and I was the first one so I grabbed us a table. I wasn't sure what was good here so I went off their suggestions. We ordered the Dancing Ebi roll, another roll that Kim says is like a Lion King roll from another place and the shitake roll plus some Edamame. Mmmmmmm all were very good rolls! I preferably like the Lion King roll (not sure what its called here) but it was tasty! Service was excellent here. I was surprised since normally at sushi places when not seated at the bar, it can be hit or miss but not here. Very attentive staff and filled our waters and hot tea repeatedly without having to ask. They also let us sit and chat a good 30 mins after devouring our food so it was nice that at lunch time we didn't feel we had to rush to the office or Baskin Robbins next door! ;) It was a great hour of food, conversation and gossip =P I will be back for sure! read more

So forget if the food was good. I know it was lunchtime. I know they were busy, and I know they want to turn tables. That said, it is never okay to rush someone out in 15 minutes for lunch, especially when 2 people alone spent $80 on a lunch. More of a 3.5 Satsuma was my first venture into the world of sushi rolls! Pretty exciting. Friend and I ordered the Dynasty Roll (my favorite!), Dancing Ebi, and a Crazy Horse. Previous to this, I've only tried plain sashimi and nigiri rolls, so this was definitely pretty exciting. The Dynasty Roll was definitely the best. I've always been a fan of California Rolls, and this was basically a California Roll with shrimp tempura and with smoked salmon. SMOKED SALMON. That stuff is bomb. But seriously, super mega delicious! Dancing Ebi was alright; I've never been a major fan of thick sauces so I wasn't too fond of it, and eel tastes funny in my mouth, but it wasn't bad or anything. If you're into eel and you're alright with sauce, it should be fine. The sauce didn't taste bad or anything, but I prefer my fish as ... un sauced up as possible. Crazy Horse was good! It's this massive roll and they literally just shove various types of sushi into it. Fish tasted pretty fresh, but I got kind of bored with all the fishy flavors, although to be fair, I'm still very new to sushi so I couldn't appreciate the variety of fish that I was eating. A 3.5 cause of how expensive it is... I mean sushi is honestly expensive anywhere you go, but ouch! $50 for lunch is a ton... tldr; good stuff, but bring a loaded wallet read more

If we are ever feeling up to the all-you-can-eat-Sunday-sushi-special (now $25, up from $20), we will come back here. That might actually be soonish because it's now stuck in my head as a challenge. Otherwise, once is enough. The experience started with a high: upon entering, the staff addresses you with a warm and welcoming greeting and then seats your party. Yay, instant friends! Then, they quickly proceeded to forget that we were there. We each ordered a combination plate so that we could sample different items. And because I was hankering for miso soup, and rice...well, food, in general. I got the combo with hamachi, tapa maki roll and veggie tempura and he got gyoza and nigiri. We never got any tea and I had to go all MacGyver on the dinner -- and craft makeshift soy sauce containers for the sushi. We had nearly fallen asleep by the time they brought the check.
