Weeknights are the deal at Shan Dong - no wait for a table at about 5:30! We ordered the hand cut noodles with meat sauce, the Shan Dong dumplings, and the pancake pockets with leeks. The noodles were fine (not necessarily amazing) and the dumplings were solid (again, nothing amazing) but the leek pancakes are worth the wait (at least 20 minutes). Slow service! We had to constantly flag down the servers. Also had a difficult time customizing our orders, only the gentleman owner speaks fluent English. Of course the laurels have been crowned on them. But are they really even a Shandong restaurant? I get the prestige and theatricality of the hand pulled noodles. Right there in the front window, enticing, seducing you. Of course you order them. Everyone orders them. But if we/re being honest, they're ok. Not great. Yet that's fine, the price point is modest enough. I'm sure they turn out heaps of great food. And maybe I'm unfair in judging them by L.A. standards. In the great sun baked city to the south, if a place references a region of the country of origin, you may as well have travelled to that region via their menu. Here you find simulacrums of Hunan and Szechuan dishes. Many Cantonese dishes. Too many. So ok. They're aren't enough Shandong people in Oakland to justify an exhaustive Shandong menu. I get it. The noodles are good. But their thickness can result in undercooking. This last time, a core of raw flour ran through each noodle in my bowl. I advise you abstain from administering chili paste and chili oil to your dishes. So as to not obfuscate the more delicate palate of wine and vinegar. Hey, what am I saying? This joint is popular. Even on weeknights the line spills out into the street. They've got clientele out the wazoo. Still I wish their menu would be more disorienting (lol). Haven't had a chance to eat Chinese food since moving out to The Bay. Seen many great reels on IG about this place and decided to have a family night here. Cozy hole in the wall place in Chinatown Oakland. They're known for the fresh handmade noodles made daily as you walk in. The food didn't disappoint and all of the little Chinese aunties working here were so sweet and always had a smile on their faces. I got the hand-pulled noodles and the Shan Dong beef (recommended by the guy at the front, and he was right), and both had the perfect level of spice. They were very doughy, like they weren't cooked all the way through. I watched them boil the noodles too. I'm also not a fan of too much sauce, and there was more than I liked. The sauce was thick like peanut butter, but it just had a faint sesame flavor. Honestly, it's too heavy in my opinion. I also tried their green onion pancake, which was mediocre. It was a bit oily, and I had to use napkins to dab away the excess oil. The best dish was the sweet and sour pork. It was authentic--the flavor and crispiness of the pork made a perfect combo! DEFINITELY a hidden gem in Oakland, the service is FAST and the food is made fresh and comes out piping hot! They speak very good English here. We ordered the hot and spicy chow mein with the hand made noodles for +$1, the shan dong chicken and the prawns with candy walnut. The noodles are really dense here. You can watch them make the noodles right at the front of the restaurant, and they use a lot of flour, so that's most likely why it's not as chewy as I thought they would be. They're good, but not amazing. They were actually better after I took them home as leftovers, left them in the fridge and then reheated them in the microwave because they had gotten "soggy" but not actually soggy. Overall, for something that every single review seems to talk about, I didn't think they were all that special. Because they were so dense they also didn't absorb the sauce or any flavor too well, until as mentioned before, as leftovers the next day. I'd pass on the hand made noodles if/when I revisit. The Shan Dong chicken was also nothing too special. It wasn't crispy, and was drowned in a sweet sticky glaze sauce. Good! But I wish it would have somehow stayed a bit crispy before it got to our table. It was still really good, but I would pass on this as well for next time to try something else! San Tung still takes the cake for fried chicken! The Prawns with Candy Walnut was excellent. Not too sweet, not overcooked and had a nice snap to it when you bit into a shrimp. Decided on Chinese food for dinner and saw that Shan Dong had delivery on DoorDash. Place must be pretty popular as the delivery time was close to 50 mins. There was so many options it was tough to choose just a couple of dishes. For our order we tried: - Mongolian Beef; 5/5 was very flavorful, well seasoned and had lots of onions and peppers. If ordering take out then recommend you dump it into a bowl to serve because majority of the beef was at the bottom of the container. Dish tasted just as great the next day for lunch. - Lemon Chicken; 3.8/5 good portion of chicken and the sauce definitely had a lemon taste. However the chicken was heavily breaded and seemed like it was mostly thigh meat, but overall the sauce flavor wasn't too impressive. - 6 piece Potstickers; 5/5 amazing dumplings! The potsticker was much bigger than I thought it would be. Chicken filling to wrap ration was great. The chicken filling was very well seasoned and was juicy with each bite. We drive through Oakland a couple times a month and usually grab dinner from a local spot--there's so much good food to try. This was my second time eating from Shandong, and it lived up to the hype again. Based on the reviews and our love for spicy food, we ordered the hot and spicy chow mein with handmade noodles for $1. They make them fresh in-house, right in front of you. They're thick, uneven, super chewy, and soak up the flavor perfectly. Honestly, they should be the default--just make sure to ask. We also got Mongolian beef, which was well done and a hit with my husband. On a previous visit, we had an eggplant dish (can't remember the name), and even though I'm not usually into chunky eggplant, that one was really flavorful. There's always a line for pickup, and they're always busy--which says a lot. I'm excited to try more from the menu, but those handmade noodles are a must. read more

My favorite spot! I love the braised green beans and Shan dong chicken. I was in China town and seen the extended waiting line which to me was an indication the food was worth the wait. And it was! I see why they have a huge returning customer base. The staff are great. Attentive and very friendly and the food comes out pretty quickly. Quite simply the best Chinese food in the area. Whenever I have friends visit (or friends in the area that have never been), I take them here, and they always agree how amazing this little hole in the wall is. I recommend always adding on the hand-pulled noodles whenever possible (it's only like one more dollar). Yes the wait can be long sometimes, but I never find it to be crazy, and you can always use the Yelp waitlist to be texted if you want to roam around Chinatown to kill time. Food always comes out astonishingly fast, that I sometimes don't understand how it's possible. But I don't question it -- I just eat the delicious food and be grateful :D The tea they serve at the table is delicious as well, it made me an oolong fan! Just make sure to let it sit in the pot a few minutes before pouring. I got them catered recently too for a party of about 25 -- it was so easy, I just called the day before and ordered my dishes. The person who answered the phone even gave suggestions/tips without me asking. Everyone who came couldn't believe I got Shandong catered!! A game changer, and the price was super reasonable. I'm looking for my perfect Chinese takeout place, the place of my dreams. TL/DR? I'm still looking. We tried the spring rolls, mu shu pork, spicy beef, and house special chow mein. I'll start with the pros: it's a thriving and clean space in Oakland Chinatown, the staff is courteous and efficient, the prices are reasonable, the mu shu was excellent and each dish had lots of fresh veggies. The downside: the beef was just okay, and the chow mein was lowkey disappointing, as were the spring rolls. They appeared to have deep fried the chow mein noodles, which made them greasy and spongey, and honestly the whole thing was kind of bland. Maybe I'm ordering the wrong dishes for this restaurant or maybe this restaurant simply isn't for me. Choose your own adventure! They were really busy we had to be on a waiting list for about a half hour, There was already tea on the table. The combo fried rice had generous pieces of meat in it. Everything was really good what else can I say. It's a casual and basic seating tables. This place is in Chinatown. The only negative thing I could say was about the bathroom. No toilet seat covers. Came here with some crew after a recommendation. This place stays busy from sunrise to sunset and you can watch them make the noodles in the window! Bring your appetite because the dishes are huge. It's family style dining with a lazy Susan in the middle of the table so you can rotate the dishes. The best part is watching the servers zip around with the dumplings and other authentic dishes! We have visited this place before but had been quite a while ago. The restaurant is small 10-12 tables and filled with activity. People making noodles in the front, waitstaff delivering food to tables and prepping take out orders, chefs cooking in the kitchen-lots happening. Within minutes of being seated we received hot tea and our order was taken. For our family of four We chose the '5 dish meal' selecting Shan Dong Chicken, green beans, hot spicy eggplant, Mongolian beef, Corn chowder fish, we added noodles with chicken and steamed rice. Shan Dong is a long time staple in Chinatown and one of the few restaurants open past 7PM. Their hand pulled noodles and the dough they use for their dumplings are the same. Generally, their dumplings are good in flavor. However, if you're not fond of thick wrappers, it may not be for you. Their stir fry with lettuce and stir fried spicy noodles are great. Any time I've gone in the past with friends, we always got the hand pulled noodles which are chewy and hold the sauce well. Service is quick. You're being served by nice Asian aunties.
