It was so windy one day that I opted to sit at a coffee shop rather than run on Ocean Beach. Coffee is better than sand in your eyes. The cafe looked cute from the outside. There were guys chatting on chairs spread in front of the shop. I walked in and there were an array of people, studying students, old guys reading the newspaper, a couple playing a card game, and families. I sat myself down next to a duet playing musical instruments (sax and piano). It was entertaining. With my cup of coffee (which was decent), I did some work on my laptop. So why four stars? The ambiance was great, the barista was quick, the music was soothing. But....I had immense difficulty finding an outlet for my laptop (my laptop is grandpa status, where it can't live without the charger) and trading on and off with other people was blah. read more

Just received a fresh delivery of whole beans from Simple Pleasures delivered to me by my sister. The beans were so well-roasted that I felt compelled to write an updated review for this place. The coffee and coffee beans are always consistently solid. My favorite roast is the Guatemalan followed closely by the Colombian. This is one of my favorite place to get beans from an independent roaster. It's unfortunate that I live in LA, but luckily, my sister is willing to bring me down a pound of beans every time she visits me. Still cash only. read more

I guess when you've got your set of regulars, there's no need to treat new customers with any dignity or respect. Pretty much, the whole morning staff forgets to drink a cup of their own prior to opening the doors. They are (as in presently) rude. To the staff: Now, I'm sorry if you're not a morning person or maybe partied too much the night prior or had a rough night or was up all night studying or just generally just hate people - please suck it up and provide decent service. I want to love Simple Pleasures because it's local to me and they serve a decent cup of Joe. They offer various salads, sandwiches and breakfast items that are very good. The problem with SP is not the food, it's the service. Now, I understand that this only seems to occur in the the morning; the rest of the time the staff seems great. Right off the bat, I'm a big fan of Simple Pleasures. I've lived in San Francisco for a little over 17 years and I've been going to this cafe for pretty much just as long. Want a cup of coffee and a bagel or pastry to start off your morning? They've got that. Want some lunch in the afternoon as you study or catch up on work? They have that too. How 'bout some dinner after a long day? Hey, guess what, they've got that covered as well! But it's not just about the food abnd drinks they have, it's the people who work there, the live music that's there 3-4 times a week, and the comfortable, welcoming homey vibe that they put forth. San Francisco, like so many major cities in the US and around the world are filled with Starbucks' and other big box coffee shops that all serve the same type of drinks, play the same types of music, and that practically look the same. Among all that sits Simple Pleasure in WAY Outer Richmond uneffected by the coffee gentrification and continuing to offer quality beverages, food, and what's essentially an extended living room for all those who's days can be made better by a beverage, a bite to eat, some live music, and some friendly conversations. If you're lucky you can get a ham and cheese croissant if any are still available. New parklet out front for those warm sunny days and a live music calendar is posted with local musicians. I don't often write about small local cafes in the Outer Richmond, but when I do, they must be ... awesome! We noticed this cozy-looking spot on our way to a Destination Restaurant but after looking over the menu at the other place, decided to hang out at SP instead! We were lucky to arrive at the end of the lunch hour and snagged a nice butcher-block style table in a sunny corner. Even though I ordered a small salad with egg salad on the side, I got a large, but that was OK, because it was friggin' delicious! I packed up the rest to go, but sadly I left it on the top of my car, and it ended up in the middle of Balboa Street. I mourned that salad for a while. I am still mourning it. The atmosphere was cozy, with a lovely mural of Land's End regaling the ochre walls and period details - an angled ceiling, dark woods - giving the room a homey feeling. The crowd is local and neighborly, and people appear to spend a lot of time hanging out here. Why wouldn't they? Rock on, Simple Pleasures! read more

This is the quintessential San Francisco neighborhood coffee shop/hang out place. They roast their own coffee next-door. The coffee is extremely reasonably priced and refills are even cheaper. This place is adorable and my fav of all the non-starbucks type places south of Sebastopol (Hardcore Coffee). The food is awesome and generous, the ambiance is funky and functional and the coffee is delish. I'm not sure if they still do it, but on Monday nights they used to have jazz with "Monk's Bones" a piano trio that plays bop the way it was meant to be played; with love, care and a spirit of risk-taking... those guys: Chuck, Sam and Si are pros in the best sense of the word. What a bargain to see them for free! I rated them 4 out of 5 because of the barista attitude issue. It's really the only thing I don't care for about this place and most local (hippie/non-corporate) coffee places. I know they mean well and are wonderful people who no doubt could be doing something that truly would bring out their potential if only the economy wasn't so bad (trust me I know), but come on ladies (for the most part), if another woman is your customer, she can taste your derision and it's being mentioned here and in other reviews. Remember sisters it's tough all over and even though you might think you have all of your customers sussed as snobs because we're not at that moment behind the counter, we would like to be on friendlier terms with you and our tips and smiles are the only way we can communicate that. I LOVE this place! I lived a few blocks away from this place and eventually right across the street. The coffee and food is great and the atmosphere is so cozy and fun. I've gotten to know the people that work there very well and they are always nice. A lot of my friends i see out at OB frequent this place too. Its our fav place to go after a cold session in the freezing pacific. This place really reminds me of my best times in the city. Its very neighborhood oriented. This wonderful little place in the avenues is a goldmine. I have been coming here almost 30 + years - and they never disappoint. The coffee is exceptional, all kinds of good yummies. But best of all is the service. Everyone is helpful, nice and friendly. Love the simple, hipster atmosphere, like it used to be since the beginning. Huge tables accommodate many people. And, if you need a little peace and quiet - double seating in the windows or the back room. This is the place, if you just want to be relaxed. Every time I'm in the city, I try to stop by with friends or by myself. Last night I was there with a friend, it was nice to talk and catch up. This place is all about the customer. I know this becoz... There are sufficient outlets to plug in your laptop. There is a large water dispenser in the corner that is always full. There is a lot of reading material. Good music. (a great live jazz band played tonight 5-7pm) Comfy spaces. And its always nice and warm indoors. By the way, they also have good coffee and a killer grilled chicken sandwich. ps: everytime i'm here they seem to always be chopping onions. My eyes will water for about half hour-45mins. If you need any indication that the Outer Richmond is underrated, look no further than Simple Pleasures. This place could easily fit in with the smattering of cafes in the Valencia or perhaps on an offstreet in the Haight, but is instead tucked away between ethnic restaurants and houses, all under a blanket of the ever-prevalent seaside fog. I ordered only a tea, one of the many loose-leaf varieties this place carries. (It was hard not to purchase a selection from the mountain of pastries as those looked beyond amazing!) My friend and I came here on a Saturday night while I was in town. I got Allagash White on tap and she got a chai latte, I believe. There was a duo playing music in their 50's or 60's. They were a lot of fun. The place had a nice vibe to it. We were kicked out right at 10pm with no warning or any kind of kindness from one of the baristas. That didn't rub me the right way. This seems like it's kinda out of the way in SF. If I were to be back in town, I don't know that I'd pick this joint over Blue Danube, but it was an alright experience. read more

This place is way out there. I biked out here from SOMA to try this place, and it wasn't bad. I enjoyed the coffee (cafe au lait) and the pastries were top notch. The staff was a bit curt and I didn't get a helpful vibe from him - later when I asked where the pastries were made, he either didn't want to tell me or didn't know. In either case, the decor and environment was pleasant, even if the bathroom was intentionally grungy. Nice outdoor parklet for sitting. Oh there are so many reasons why I love simple pleasures. So many that I think that I must list them as to not bore my readers: 1) Couches. 2) Board games. I have yet to play one, but I like having the option. 3) The locals. This café is populated by a colorful bunch of outer Richmond locals. I can only aspire to be as local as them. This translates to a lovely community atmosphere. 4) Music - whatever the staff is playing is always great. Also, nearly every time I go there I seem to catch a live music performance. 5) The Wi-Fi sitch: 2 hrs free - a fair offering. Some people partake, but by no means does this seem to hinder the amount of good old-fashioned conversation that happens here. 6) Good Baristas. Yes a very simple pleasure-- the bagel with pesto cream cheese & fresh veggies for $2.95. I'm sold. If not a bagel, there is an adequate selection of pastries & cookies-- I'm happy. The service is okay-- never with a smile but then again I cant think of any coffee place in SF offering service with a smile. So based on food, location, crowd... overall vibe...I give 4 stars. Nice comfy interior with cozy decorations that's simply inviting on a foggy sf day. It is sort of dim inside but they provide plenty of side or table lamps. Lots of pastry, food, and drink options. Got my usual soy latte, it was a decent cup. Foam was not sexy since it had lots of huge bubbles. But ill let that slide since I like the ambiance. Perfect place for live music too! read more

BF and I got the chocolate croissant, tea cake, jalapeno and cheddar roll, and a macaroon. All were good, but the tea cake was the best in my opinion. I stop here every morning on my way to work. It is out of the way and there is an almost equally excellent coffee shop that is not as out of the way as SP is, but notice how i said almost. Yeah, thats because the coffee here is delicious and NEVER burnt, the bagels are delicious and they give you a "healthy" amount of cream cheese, if thats your thing. If not, I might suggest the wheat bagel with peanut butter. Or perhaps the sesame with hummus? They also have delicious oatmeal, the best in the city actually. Not sure why its so good, but damn. The staff is awesome. Ever friendly and helpful, they are kind enough to enteratin my feeble attempts at conversation that early in the morning. I discovered this place rather randomly about a year ago when I was fed up with the passive agressive signs @ Zephyr (I'm not a mooching customer, although I know that there are a lot out there, and I get resentful being lumped in with them). Best cafe discovery of the year. Lots of tables, interesting people, piquant music. Dig it, dig it, dig it. And the back tables all have little lamps on them. Simple Pleasures grew on me. I was initially put off by the surfer rock star fashionista barista types. It was strange at first because I just wanted to get my homework done, not lounge around and smoke. The baristas initially seemed rude to me. But I do have to say, the personality is really growing on me. I love their breakfast burritos, coffee, tea, and cookie selection. I still cannot come here if I have serious deadlines to hit and need to focus. But if I just need to do some quick reading for class, I can come here and chat with random peoples. I would say this is a great place to meet up with friends, read the newspaper on the weekend, and shoot the breeze with locals. Not the best place to study. But they have better food than Cafe Zephry down the street so sometimes I come here just for the food. Great neighborhood staple. Great character. read more

Huge fan of the fact that sprouts come on the sandwiches without being pre-ordered (at least that was the case with mine). Coffee was tasty, service was decent, and the atmosphere was ambivalently cozy, depending on your definition of cozy, that is. You could either be turned off by the collecting dust, archaic furniture, dark corners, and rusty bathroom pipes, or enjoy its quaint characteristics, kind of like an old library, or used book store. I'm stuck somewhere in the middle. It was kinda cool having an old-school lamp at the desk where I ate and worked. Friendly locals frequent this cafe and many of them would be happy to chat if you don't have an agenda. Lots of seating but maybe it could use a touch more lighting inside. The baristas are alright. I wouldn't consider the service excellent, but it will do for a cup of coffee. Either I am impatient or they get distracted easily. The coffee is legit. Why do people still go to starbucks? Of the three times I've been here, twice they've been out of bagels around noon on Sunday. This would be OK if bagels were a side item that wasn't popular here, but its the main thing in the middle of their menu.
