This looked like a promising traditional diner - clean, well-lit and packed. Just steps from Penn Station, an area that doesn't have great food, mostly serviceable and reliable places with vaguely ethnic names. However, the "fresh" orange juice was from a bottle or can. I know that's a very common deception on menus, but unless the oranges are cut and squeezed on the premises on that day, it's not "fresh orange juice!" The omelette was burned. Although the ingredients were fine (goat cheese, avocado), all I tasted was burnt eggs. The hash browns were cold and mushy, not hot and crisp. They had probably been sitting for awhile, not made fresh for my order. The service was fine. People around me were complaining about waiting a long time to order, but I got lucky. Flavorful food, attentive staff, some of the quickest service I have had in any place I have ordered before and a bit pricey but still delicious. I got the Chipotle chicken wrap and my sister got the pancakes with eggs, ham and sausage. The pancakes were great and quite big and eggs, ham and sausage were a bit small as it came with two of each but still good nonetheless. Chocolate shake was good as well but a bit small. The Chipotle chicken wrap didn't have the Chipotle mayo but it still tasted good though without it. Overall I would definitely go back. read more

Best quality diner in this area. Servers are always so nice and on point and reliable. Prisci helped me most recently but I've been multiple times and all of them are super nice. Food comes out quick and fresh. And they are very accommodating at all hours of day or night. Gives a true family diner feel steps away from the hustle and bustle of the busiest parts of the city. Only unpleasant experience I had was October eighteenth. Was shocking since every other experience wasn't unpleasant. I arrived twenty mins before six pm. Mentioning others were attending six pm. Two of them were behind time regarding slow transit. I explained situation to a waiter who couldn't accept . Remarked if others are still late I ll probably end up seating different people at this table you ll have to walk out. . Well I never would had expected to heard an unprofessional response. It looks just like an old-fashioned diner on the inside but a bit run-down. The waitress assigned to our table was a bit rude and impatient. I told her we needed more time and then she came back two minutes later to say, "you ready yet?!" After we ordered, the food came within 2-5 minutes - the quickest I've ever received food at a restaurant. However, the food was terrible! My boyfriend had French toast and eggs and I had a cheese quesadilla. It wasn't good at all. It seemed to be old food just reheatWe are ended up paying and not even finishing our food. the beyond burger was advertised in the menu for $12.75, but the bill came and it was $20.25. i was up charged $3 for the beyond burger and then $6 for the fries. when I asked for the correction, they then charged me $19.25 total, which means they charged me even more than the original $6 for the fries. my waiter was nice, but this is just dishonest business practices at this point and I'm disappointed. read more

This place sucks. We have been here since 947am and it's now 11:01am and we just got our food. We have seen 5 tables who came 30min after us get food way before we did. It's quite obvious that the server forgot to input our order. It's unbelievable. A big pet leave of mine is when people don't take responsibility for poor service. I ordered huevos Rancheros and when food arrived the presentation looked lousy but it was not a surprise as this diner doesn't maintain high standards. Went here to get food after taking an amtrak into the city with my service dog around 10 PM. The man behind the counter was belligerent and rude and refused to serve us without seeing some kind of papers (illegal/ against federal law to ask for service animal certification). In any case, I informed them that my dog was both highly trained and considered medical equipment, additionally he is afforded access by federal law, as I require him to get around with my disability. The hostess wouldn't even look at the card I offered her with information regarding the ADA and the entire experience was incredibly disheartening, disruptive to my mental health, and absolutely unacceptable discrimination against someone who experiences serious disruption every day due to disability to begin with. Service animals are medically necessary, protected under FEDERAL LAW and I regret not staying and telling the management to call the cops on us, but I honestly hate cops so I do intend to make sure anyone who has a service animal take caution !!!! This place lacks common human decency for people with disabilities and WILL break federal LAW. read more

Went after seeing a movie with a group because it was convenient but it was not good. I can't remember the last place I've been to that served food that was actively bad, but one friend got a salad and it had some whole walnuts, giant pieces of lettuce, and a single tomato cut into quarters. Not quartered or halved cherry tomatoes or diced tomatoes, but massive quarters. Another friend got the pastrami omelette which was pretty overcooked. The other friend got the huevos rancheros and got a pretty good amount of uncooked egg white. I asked for a recommendation and the waiter was kind of rude, which normally doesn't even bother me, but the whole experience was just bad, didn't end up getting anything and it was for the better. This is a great diner in midtown NYC. I come here with various groups of friends at differing times of the day and night. They are open 24 hours! The interior seems a little out of date but the staff is super friendly. The diner is separated into two main areas. The area you first walk into and an area further in the back up some stairs. The back seating area is the best are in my honest opinion. This place has great prices for the area. The food is good and fairly quick. One of the best things about this place is they don't rush you. I like coming here to just to spend time with friends. I have come with small and large groups. They don't eve mind breaking the bill apart for everyone. They take credit card and cash. The last time I went here I had a tiramisu that was just delicious! I have also had burgers and other light snack dishes. I come in with friends some of which are picky eaters - when I come here they don't concern me as the staff will go off menu for her. Needless to say I do recommend this diner when you are looking to eat or hang out with friends. The dress is definitely casual but I am sure suits are welcome too. Delivery review. Saturday...morning basically (4 am), my friend and I were hungry after a night out. We ordered French fries, fried mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers and a cheese quesadilla. We've ordered delivery from other diners and it hasn't always been great so we weren't expecting much to be honest. But to our surprise, the food was pretty good! Everything came warm/hot. The fried mozzarella sticks weren't anything special and the chicken fingers weren't my favorite. A little dry. The quesadilla was dense (lots of cheese and veggies on top of it) and came with a side of guacamole and salsa. Sure it's only a cheese quesadilla, but it was bigger than we expected and large in size. The fries, were classic diner fries which I loved! They came hot and weren't soggy from too much grease or anything. Delivery was estimated for 45min to an hour. But the food came within 30 minutes (probably around 20 min). Super fast. One negative is the price. The four items in total cost $44.88. I think it's a lot for diner food. We'll definitely be ordering delivery from here in the future to fulfill our hunger at 4am. read more

I first discovered Skylight Diner on SeamlessWeb and oh what a discovery it was! How this diner's delivery dude manages to get my chicken cutlet parmigiana hero and rigatoni bolognese to me so quickly and keep the hot items hot and the cold items cold is pretty much beyond me but I am sure am grateful. Whenever I answer the door he sings my name and asks, "Where are you from?" I've tried answering Las Vegas but that doesn't satisfy him. I doubt telling him my birthplace would either. Oddly, when my favorite Washingtonian answers the door he doesn't get his name sung out nor does he get the "Where are you from?" question. Maybe I should feel special? SOME ADVICE FOR ORDERING: - If it comes with fries, specify that you want them in a separate container - Stick to diner and Italian sort of items, the California Chicken Wrap was nowhere near as good as the rigatoni or the chicken parm sandwich - If you like ranch dressing, ask for a side of it - theirs is lovely read more

I think over the years, I've developed a bit of an instinct about restaurants. When I walk into anything from a steakhouse to a diner, I always get a "gut feeling" whether the place will be a great experience, an "okay" experience or a "meh" experience. Sometimes I'm off, I admit, but this morning I was spot on. I walked into Skylight and immediately got "the bad vibe". I tried to dismiss it since it had an old fashioned style that I really liked including a bar to sit at and eat, booths, tile floors, old photos of New York City on the walls and so on. From a visual point of view, this was "my kinda place", but oh boy, did that go away quick. The first sign that something was wrong: a table near me had two guys looking REALLY bored. I was there about ten minutes and noticed they already had drinks, and were waiting for their food, and waiting, and waiting. They finally left. Their food arrived five minutes later. Let that sink in. The busboy came quick and gave me water and coffee. Ten minutes later my waitress appeared. I ordered and asked her if she could give my phone a charge (I had the charger and all that). She just refused. No smile, no "Good morning". She was just curt and scowled very efficiently. This is literally the first time in six months I have had a restaurant refuse to charge my phone. She took my order and off she went. Fifteen minutes later my food showed up. I ordered a turkey and swiss omelet with a side of grits and whole wheat toast. Half a star for a good omelet. It was tasty and the turkey was good. The grits were done well but the toast. God...how do you screw up toast?! It clearly had been toasted (as the crispy texture indicated) but it was already slightly lukewarm. Clearly this dish had sat somewhere for a bit before they gave it to me. The coffee was pretty bad, basically "dirty water". Only a copious amount of cream and Sweet & Low saved it from being totally gross. I wanted to ask for hot sauce and more coffee, so I sat patiently and waited. Ten minutes later i decided to just start chowing down. I did finally get my coffee refill a couple minutes after I started eating. I can't say this bad service was just me either. As I've sat here, I've watched four other tables be seated and each one took about 10-15 minutes before a waiter even checked on them for orders. I have not experienced service this bad in a while, and it's such a shame because this venue looks great and it's in a cool location. Well, they can't all be winners. read more

I have recently had the worst food from Skylight Diner and to top it off I also had the worst customer service from the Skylight Diner Owner/Manager, Peter (However that could have been a lie and after research I discovered that the owner's names are Teddy and George, but makes you think what type of workers does this Diner have if their lying about their position). I order Appetizer, Main Dish and Dessert, and everything was so poorly made. The Quality of food was poor as well as the taste, and the customer service was distastful. The service was poor from the start. The Manager who took our delivery order over the phone was rude and disrespectful. He was not polite, he rushed us off the phone, and at no point did he make his customer feel like he valued their business. Yes, at this point we should have decided that perhaps this was not the best place to order from, but we didn't and we tried to give this place a chance. I guess we thought how bad could it really be. Boy, were we mistaken! We asked him to repeat our order and he sacrastically said "repeat the order, do you know how long I have been doing this". When is being cocky and rude, ever the right thing to do when speaking to a customer, regardless if its over the phone or in person. The first two times we called before we even had a chance to complete our order or question, he quickly hung up on us, as if he was done talking to us. Quality of Food: Starter: Order the Side Ceasar Salad, which the dressing was bland and tasteless. Main Order: Herb Crusted Chicken poorly made the chicken was over cooked, the sauce had a horrible after taste and was bland and nothing about it was good. By no means did it looke or taste freshly cooked. Side: Mash Potatoes taste like powdered instant mash potatoes, first thing I thought of was "straight prison food". I ordered broccoli with cheese and the broccoli was rubbery, why was the broccoli rubbery I have no clue but definitely not edible. Drink: I asked for a Sweet Tea and I was given hot tea. When I explained that I wanted Ice Tea which is commonly know as Sweet Tea, I was told that, that that was my fault not his. When I called back to explain my dissatifaction. I was told that anything I wanted in place of the dissatisfactory food I would have to pay for it. When I stated that it was not a personal preference in taste but rather the quality and condition in which the food was recieved, I was told that he does not know where I am from but in New York this how things are done, and he immediately hung up on me. When my friend attempted to call back to speak to a manager she was told that he (Peter) was the Manager and he doesnt care if we complain, he is not going to service us and immediately hung up. We just gave this small business $60 worth of business just to be treated unfairly, receive poor quality food, and to be told that "this is how they do it in New York". read more

I was catching a bus back home and wanted to grab some breakfast before departure. I walked in and was waiting to be seated. It was busy. Manager was occupied closing checks from customers. But that doesn't mean another customer should be waiting for more than 5 mins to be seated. Manager could've asked a server to seat me or something. I went ahead and sat myself down at a open table. The restaurant we were originally were going to for dinner was closed for a private party. This left us stranded in west Chelsea late on a weeknight with almost no alternative dining choices available. Seriously, this was a dreary swath of town. Eventually we made our way towards Penn Station and happily settled for a late dinner at Skylight Diner. As far as diners and diner fare goes, this was really not bad at all. Definitely better than nearby Tick Tock for example. The service is really quick here, so don't be surprised if you are asked for your dinner order within a minute of receiving a menu with more than a 1000 options. I am always astounded by all of the choices at any given diner and especially at this diner. I eventually went with one of the specials and a guaranteed diner classic: the meatloaf dinner served with, in my case, french fries and corn. The dinner wasn't bad. The meatloaf was served on a plate by itself. Said plate was completely hidden by three large cuts of meatloaf all smothered in brown gravy. It was a substantial offering of protein, and it had some flavor to it too. This didn't feel like ground up hamburger going bad, but rather a bona fide, rustic dinner. Definitely passable in quality and very filling. The corn was out of season and predictably only so-so in taste. The fries were pretty good though. I could actually taste the potato in them and liked their texture. Dinner for two with sodas came in at around $30 total which was refreshingly cheap. Be aware though, they do have a policy where everyone pays a $5 minimum if they are seated at a table. This wasn't an issue for us, but I could see it being an issue in a large group for the one guy who isn't hungry. Service was super friendly and quick, so I can't complain.
