I went there this morning. they say they don't take cash because of "increases in thefts". Give me a break. This only puts out the people in the area who want to pay with cash. It's par for the course though considering the arrogant lack of customer service there. I paid over $12 for just two cinnamon buns and I didn't even get a "thank you", or a "have a nice day". They girl there just started talking to someone else while I was tapping my card and then I was left there to leave. And what is the deal with charging so much for the food? A cinnamon bun is not a complicated piece of food. It's dough, cinnamon and sugar with some butter. How do you have the nerve to charge $6?? The whole place just gives off a feeling of self-entitlement. I won't be going there again. It's a cold, uninviting place and a rip off. read more

I want to start this off with saying I don't normally enjoy sweets. I was extremely hesitant until I laid eyes upon the Croissant Donut Vanilla Cream and knew immediately that it was love at first pastry. I could feel my mouth salivating and my animal instincts took over. Like all first loves, it was wreck-less, intense, passionate and short lived.To my pleasant surprise, I didn't realize the pastry was stuffed full of angelic cream alongside just the right amount of sugary sweetness. I made a complete mess of myself as I was walking, getting sugar and cream all over myself. Shamelessly, I kept going. Self control was out of the question. I needed MORE. This pastry was so delectable I nearly stumbled into traffic, or even worse, the bike lane. I wouldn't have even cared if that was the case because I would have passed as a satisfied woman. As the next few bites progressed I realized my croissant was nearly finished and I started to shed tears. I can't believe I didn't savour every mouthful of pure bliss. I ravaged this little piece of heaven on earth like there was no tomorrow. Heck, I ate that pastry like It was armageddon and I wouldn't survive to see the next five minutes. I still think about this pastry as I rest my head at night. I want to eat another one but I've never experienced so many emotions in a three minute timeframe. The things I would do to have another taste of paradise are unimaginable, but I'm not sure I could look at myself again after I savagely demolished yet another piece of pure utopia. The croissants here are the best in town, better than Beaucoup in my opinion! The staff here are very friendly and the service is great. You can pre-order via email, app or phone which is helpful as they sell out of croissants quick! Although they are quite pricey, the croissants are perfect. I was pretty disappointed with their SV location, I think the management have a couple of kinks to work out and was hesitant to give it a 3 star rating, more like 2.5 stars. Don't get me wrong, the coffee here is goooood, and the aesthetics is top notch. They serve your coffee on a geometric wooden coaster, as is everything else at this shop. Also shoutouts for the marble tabletops for those insta-worthy shots. Where I was disappointed was the food. I tried to order the large winter grain salad, but after some back-and-forth, was told that they were out of the large size and only had it in the side salad size. Fine with me, I went for the soup and salad combo. What you get for $11.50 is not meal size!! When the wooden tray came with my food it looked toy size and laughable. My friend ordered the spinach cauliflower side salad with soup, but they somehow forgot to put cauliflower in her salad and also wanted to take away our order number plaque before her food arrived. Overall the experience felt a bit anticlimactic, and disorganized but I'm giving SV the benefit of the doubt for being a new location. read more

Don't expect to feel safe in this business. Today I was approached from both sides as I placed my order. On the one hand, the man behind who was meant to leave 6 feet between us, came forward to within 18 inches because he was too impatient to wait his turn. It would have been great if I could have moved in the other direction but a STAFF member allowed an unmasked woman to have a very intense discussion 18 inches to my left. When I tried to tell the person waiting on me, she didn't even reply. I'm not ever going back. I spend over $50 every time I've been in there. This place is beautiful with lots of seating and very open. I've been there a few times now & although everything has been good I'm disappointed with a few things. Firstly, it's very confusing your first time there as there are two full counters. Secondly, I read their board with all their different coffee drinks and couldn't find just coffee anywhere. I had to ask them which was odd. Nothing listed about sizes or prices. The second time I was there I ordered a large cappuccino but they said they only have one size. Fine. But when I got it it was in this teeny tiny cup. For $4.00 I expect a normal size cappuccino. I was truly shocked. Don't ever be in a hurry because it's not that type of place where you can run in a grab a coffee & go. It's a long process. It would only be a weekend thing for me for that reason. Three of us met at SVC Granville location for some coffee and pastries. Two of us are lactose intolerant and the other is vegan, so we need milk alternatives. We are used to picking the espresso, and the mylk/milk for our lattes, but this place and many greedy cafes in Vancouver charges a ridiculous (non rational) amount for mylk. Unless they make it in house with organic almonds/ nuts, then that can be justified, but out of the box, no. We have friends who work in the food industry and own cafes so we know what the actual costs are and does not justify the Vancouver extra mylk costs when other cities do not! At least this place charges based on size of your drink, but still, we are paying for cow's milk and then extra for your nut mylk. And no where is the cost written on the menu! So it's a shock to see your receipt that you're paying over 6-7$ for your latte! My Vegan friend asked for some almond milk to use as a creamer for her coffee as they only had milk and cream out, and the barista told her that it was an extra 50 cents. Great customer service! Way to exclude your non dairy customers. She was pissed when she paid over $6 dollars for her coffee and then had to pay extra for creamer? Next, we also ordered croissants and I order it with butter and Jam; it's a $1.00 extra for butter, and another $1.00 for jam. Ridiculous, so I've just paid over $20+ (tax and tip) for a latte and ONE croissant (with butter and jam). Again, that was for just ONE latte, and ONE croissant. A get together with friends at a coffee shop costing us $20(+tax and tip) per person left us speechless... Since that incident, we have been meeting up at Beaucoup Bakery instead. Better customer service and they do not charge extra for non-dairy creamer for your coffee. Their baked goods are good but the selection is slim and sugary, and not that creative. Thomas Hass in Kits has better desert and bakery selection and Beaucoup Bakery just a few blocks from SVC has better baked goods and reasonable prices. Terra Breads and Bread Affair (Organic) is located down at Granville Island which is a nice walk. For the cost of their bread and other baked goods, better to just go to those places instead. Many other cafes around town do not practice this sort of price discrimination (including The Garden Strathcona and Wholefoods cafe); they do not charge extra for non-dairy mylk. Pick the bean and pick the mylk and that's it. Makes sense. My latte comes out to $3.75 not over $6-8 plus tax and tip! We have now stopped going to Small Victory Cafe as I like to have butter and jam with my croissant but $2 extra when the cost of the croissant is $3.50 is insane, plus paying over $1.50 - $2 extra for my latte is irrational. Charge us the espresso, and the mylk/ milk. You're losing business due to these greedy charges and poor customer service. It all adds up. read more

I want to preface by saying that I have only visited since covid began. There is generally a lineup to order, but if you arrive when there is not, you start on the pastry side and order everything there. There's a great selection to choose from; savoury to sweet, and a few meals options as well. Breads tend to sell out quickly, but at least you know they are fresh! Cakes are the only item that Carrie's over as far as I can tell. By far, the best flaky, buttery croissant I've had the pleasure of eating. The lemon tart is delightfully rich and refreshing. The Black Forest cake, when it's available, is out of this world. Monte Cristo appears to be prepared in advance and reheated, but the use of real turkey is a huge step up! My coffee experience has been limited to lattes, but they do it well. Milk is steamed perfectly to bring out the sweetness from within and the espresso is pretty well balanced. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait. The coffee bar is always busy so it's going to take a few minutes. This isn't your generic coffee bar; they focus on consistency. Beans are ground very frequently and each dose is weighed before tamping to ensure your espresso is just right. Service has always been good to great. Sometimes there's a bit of imbalance on staffing, but I expect that in this kind of business these days. It's challenging at the best of times. Will continue to return often read more

We ordered food to dine in apparently the counter person did not put it as dine-in so he brought it in a bag as togo. when requested he was not pleased that he had to redo the ordered. Nice cafe. Went here for a morning coffee meeting with a new business associate. The latte was decent. The cup was very cute. Only complaint was that they don't have sugar available. They had the faux sugar available which I never use because it is supposedly not good for health. So I had to ask for real sugar which they were happy to provide. Very busy with students and business people so there were no tables available at 9:30am in the morning. Parking is pay meter parking but that is expected on Granville Street. read more

Great coffee and baked goods but endless rules about how to queue, where to sit etc., many of which weren't made clear to customers. Staff didn't seem to know the rules and said I could sit at the bar, then I was told I was in the wrong part of the bar and moved then a very officious staff told me no-one could sit at the bar, it was for pick up only even though no-one was waiting. Forced me to sit at a table marked 'reserved' so I drank and left asap. The attitude towards a paying customer who tried to follow their own rules was pretty disappointing. read more

Matthew and Tiffany always brighten my day by remembering my name, order and just their positive vibes. All the staff are so friendly, warm and consistent with my order. The coffee and pastry were great. I was just very disappointed by the service. I had ordered a latte and pastry warmed up. I was seated at a larger table alone and once I had settled in and set up my laptop, I was asked if I could move over to a smaller table since a larger party wanted my seat. Fine, no problem. After 15-20 mins of drinking my latte, I realized my pastry was not coming, so I got up to remind them. It came, then as I had my second bite, an Asian lady with a dry erase board came to tell me that it looked like I had been seated since 1:50pm. I was on the second bite of the pastry they just served me at 3:05pm. They have a 1 hour dine in rule that none of the cash staff mentioned and you're just expected to see it on the little signs on the wall. Nice interior, slow staff, poor quality pastries. Salted caramel cheesecake tastes like any grocery store quality cheesecake with salted caramel (more like bottled syrup) on top. This cheesecake was the least liked. Next carrot cake , the frosting was very rich. However the cake was bland, not very much to say beyond that. A chocolate cookie ( which was cakey like a brownie ), average again. Also less appealing than other chocolate cookies (for example safeway cookies taste better). Overall, will we return? I really was hesitant to write this review because initially I really was excited about this place. The pastries were amazing and very decadent. My husband had some pistachio type donut which was out of this world! I had the pain au chocolat which was incredibly silky, buttery, and yummy! I also had a chocolate chip cookie for later which was really rich. The pastries we're a 4 star which is why I'm giving a 2 star instead of 1 star. We did just have regular coffee (Americana) and here is why I'm giving the poor rating. Towards the end of my coffee, I drank something slimy. I immediately spit it out and didn't drink the remainder of the coffee. I don't know what it was nor do I want to know. Since I had black coffee and I personally added cinnamon and cream from the dispenser, I'm not sure where the slime came from. Perhaps the slimy think came from the cream dispenser and not some human. As with the other reviews, it did seem a little pricey but I was fine because the pastries were good. Small victory has such a great location, with a beautiful interior, and delicious croissants, cookies and light bites! I have been a customer for awhile and I finally felt like I had to write an honest review. Despite all the great things the bakery/cafe offers, one area it struggles with is the service. There is always a line up (which attests to how good the baked goods are!) and then once you order, be prepared to wait at least 7-10 minutes for your coffee. This has been my 5th time where the service has been notably slow. I ordered a black americano to go, and brought my own cup, you would think that if someone wanted their coffee to go rather than for here that their order should take priority. However, that wasn't the case, I had time to go to the washroom, put more money on my parking meter, send some emails and my coffee was still not ready. And I didn't even order a "fancy" latte or anything just a normal coffee. This place is so great I just think they really need to step up their customer service. read more
