Worst experience ever. First off, they had no customer service whatsoever. The young lady with the gray hair was very rude. She had a lot of attitude with me when i was ordering. I asked to see the manager and she claimed that she was the manager. Not sure if she really was the manager from the way she handled the situation. Second, I ordered the upside down and i received less ice cream compared to everyone else i've seen at the store. Also the cone was put too much on the side and it fell off and they would not give me another cone. I also overheard yelling coming from the back of the store, and it sounded like the manager. She was complaining how i did not tip and how customers should be more thoughtful. The line was super long since many people did not know what they wanted to order and the line flowed into the common space of the mall. I ordered a matcha soft serve in a cup and my sister ordered 2 taiyakis (one Nutella and one red bean). Getting my soft serve was a smooth process. When getting my soft serve, I was asked if I wanted any toppings on it so I got oreo crumbles on top. The matcha soft serve was creamy and smooth, but it was lacking in the matcha taste. I'm used to stronger tastes and this was just too light for my tastes. The takiyaki were soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. This location is right near the Forever 21 entrance so i literally just go into the mall for this then leave. I love somi somi! This location is covid friendly and has good/fast service. They have great options to choose from flavor wise and toppings. If you go be sure to try their taiyaki with milk tea ice cream! One of my go to flavors is oreo because hey you can never go wrong with oreo! I have tried taiyaki before at other locations and maybe it's the recipe of how Somi Somi makes it but i only enjoy it it. They also have drinks and if your not an ice cream person you can also just get taiyaki with the fillings of your choice! After having not visited Ontario Mills for over a year due to the pandemic, I was stoked to find that they had put a taiyaki and ice cream spot that gears toward flavors from Asian influence in the building. My husband (who works in the mall) said they've been there for a while, and I was like "Why didn't you tell me!?!?" As I walked by, I saw ube on the menu and I was sold. Brought my kids and their best friend and chose the 5 taiyaki for $7.95. What an awesome deal!! We chose 1 custard, 2 taro, 1 Nutella, and 1 Oreo. My girls loved watching the workers make the fish cones and taiyaki on the irons right in front of them. We found a good spot in the food court and chowed down. Delicious!! They were hot and chewy. The dessert was great, I actually feel like the waffle had a better taste than the LA location in Sawtelle. HOWEVER the cashier was really rude. We took a minute to decide what we wanted (it was my sister's first time as I mentioned), but there was nobody in line. I was just shocked that she would actually turn them off right in front of me and then say she can't make them - after I told her my order. I am quite appalled at the behavior displayed by the staff during my visit today. I decided to try this place out as I've seen good reviews and the weather was fitting for ice cream. However, while I was in the store there seemed to have been a verbal altercation that occurred between two employees. I don't know what it was about but one of the employees, I believe the name was Calena (?) or something or the sort, randomly started shouting at another male employee, did not catch the name. She included a string of profanities that is completely inappropriate for an ice cream shop where children come. Not to mention, the place was pretty busy at the time which means not only did I have to hear this altercation, a group of others did too. This is simply just unprofessional from a business of any sort. If the employees have an issue with each other it can be dealt with after hours not in front of customers. This girl with the bad attitude must've made my ice cream too because it wasn't very good and sloppily made. Her attitude must've translated in her work ethic too because it just wasn't good. Probably wouldn't come back just because no employee should be treating another employee in that demeaning way especially in front of other customers, also the ice cream simply wasn't great regardless. Oh well, off to the next ice cream place with *happier* and more professional employees I guess. Maybe other days it's better but unfortunately today had just completely ruined my entire experience with the place. Please come here. It's so good. The taiyaki is amazing. My mom and I would always drive to Koreatown in LA to get red bean taiyaki (bungeo-ppang in Korean). Freshly made, it's crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, stuffed with your choice of filling (taro, cheese, red bean, etc). Their batter is amaze-balls. It has the consistency of mochi almost. I don't know how they do it, but it's out of this world. Foreal. They also have taiyaki where you can add icecream inside of the fish's mouth. You can sample the icecream before ordering. The soft serve is amazing and the taiyaki is one of the best I've had. I tried all the soft serve flavors and it's really hard to pick a favorite because they are all so good. I really like the ube/horchata swirl, but the matcha/cookies and cream is a close second. The soft serve has a perfect thick consistency and its rich, but not too sweet. I got the taro taiyaki and a red bean as well. The dough is almost like mochi. It's chewy and soft, but the outside is nice and crispy. Definitely recommend checking this place out.
