SOMISOMI is an Ice Cream Shop located at Ontario Mills. We came to this place a couple of times. They serve Soft Serve Ice Cream in a cup, AH-BOONG (signature goldfish-shaped waffle cone stuffed with choice of filling & soft serve) and TAIYAKI (Warm fish-shaped waffle filled with choice of filling). They have so many varieties of Ice Cream Flavors like Milk, Matcha, Ube, Chocolate, Cookies' N Cream and many more. They also have Fillings like Custard, Nutella, Red Bean, Taro, Red Bean & Cream Cheese as well as Oreo Crumbs, Strawberry, Macaron, Graham Crackers, Fruity Pebbles, Rainbow Sprinkles and so much more as Toppings. Their Ice Cream is good, but TAIYAKI is the star of the show without any doubt. And one more thing, the Ice Cream melts very quick therefore the best policy is to stand there and eat the ice cream. I love SomiSomi, every time I'm near one I have to stop by and get something. I usually get the upside down Ahboong and a 5-piece taiyaki. Custard & Oreo are my go-to's. My Ahboong is ube soft serve with a taro filled Ahboong. Whenever the taiyaki make it home they end up being soggy, but I just pop 'em in the toaster and they end up just like they were when fresh. Although everything came out good this time at this location, I'm only giving 4 stars because if it wasn't for one of the employees double checking with me what I ordered I would've been shorted a taiyaki and given the wrong filling. read more

First time trying somisomi and got 2 taiyaki fish (one with custard and the other with taro) and milk & ube swirl soft serve in a cup. We got the soft serve first, and was offered a topping (cookie/graham cracker crumbs, sprinkles, or cereal) and either a strawberry or macaron. The taiyaki was ready a few minutes later. Heed the warning on the box, as the taiyaki filling is very hot and very good! However, we preferred the soft serve over the taiyaki. The soft serve was sweet and refreshing, and the perfect treat to enjoy while taking a break shopping at the Mills. The custard and taro fillings were both delicious, but the waffle seemed a bit gummy and possibly a little undercooked inside. I wished it was a bit more crunchy. I will be back for the soft serve, but likely not for the taiyaki. read more

Definitely worth trying out as this is a different twist to your traditional taiyaki. There is still a filling of your choice inside the taiyaki and it also acts as the cone part of the ice cream cone. We shared one with custard inside and a swirl of matcha and cookies and creme soft serve. Everything was lightly sweet which I love and the flavors were also very light. They also sell regular taiyaki if you don't wish to add soft serve. Overall, it was very enjoyable during this winter heatwave. There is no indoor seating but you could stand there and eat at the table. This was my nice treat for Valentine's Day so go out there and get one! read more

This is an amazing spot to end or start a food adventure. I'd say end because I wouldn't want to eat anything after eating here. The smooth combinations of ice cream flavors for the upside down filled fish was amazing and beautiful with the ice cream. The portion is great for two people and it's quite filling. That tarty guava with the milky cream is so nice. And then, the taiyaki!! My goodness, what a well made outside waffle fish with fillings. I got oreo and black sesame, which were both so nice in the mochi-like waffle fish. Seriously could have eaten SOOO many but thankful for just limiting at two. Can't wait to try more!! read more

Another update: 3/3/2020 time around 5:40ish pm. The young Asian lady at the counter is just adorable with her customer service. I ordered my usual 5 pcs red bean. She was sweet enough to try to get to know me and the correct Way to say my name. I walked around a bit to wait for my order to be done. Got it and couldn't resist taking a bite... I'm pretty sure this is the best one I have had so far. She made it spot on! Crispy on the outside soft chewy on the inside.. if anything I wish she worked there 24/7. Can't wait to come back! UPDATE: decided to try this place again. The batter is much better this round! It did not have that not so fresh smell to it. So now I updated the stars to 4. :) they had Apple Pay day and I'm not sure how long that will go for but if you use Apple Pay it is half off. Also tomorrow they will be giving discount for v on Veterans Day so I will be returning back tomorrow. First time coming here and I was excited to try the taiyaki. Ordered the classic red bean and a mixture of the rest (cheese custard and the red bean mixed). We didn't have to wait long as it was pretty empty. Once it was ready I took a bite.., the outside nice and crispy and inside nice and chewy... the flavor was a bit off... the "dough" had a certain smell to it as if it wasn't fresh batter... that's the reason why it gets 3 stars. Ice cream was good but the customer service. I ordered 7 takoyaki and 1 more with ice cream. The girl gave me the ice cream first once she gave me the cream she gave me the dirties look and I also ordered 7 more takoyaki, didn't close the box for me or give me a bag. If I was holding the ice cream already shouldn't you close my boxes and bag it for me since you can see me struggling. Anyways she looks like she didn't want to be there and was rude . I was pretty excited to see a Somisomi much closer to home than the Arcadia, Koreatown, or Little Tokyo I've tried. I chose to get the Ube/Horchata with a custard filled taiyaki for $5.95. You can ask for it in a cup since the taiyaki can get soggy quickly if the ice cream is inside it. There was no wait, lots of foot traffic inside the Ontario mills. They take card. It's been a few years since my last visit to Japan, but Somi Somi made me feel like I was back there! My family and I had taiyaki as street food while we were abroad; it was the perfect snack when walking through the busy street markets. Somi Somi brought back lots of fond memories with its warm, custard-filled, fish-shaped pastry! For those not familiar with this Japanese favorite, it's kind of like an eclair served warm, without the icing. They make each order fresh, so the inside custard is warm and the outside is just a little bit crunchy. (There are other taiyaki fillings available.) You can only order in quantities of 2 or 5. This place is so good! I usually get the soft serve but today I decided to try the taiyaki. We got the order of 5. They made it fresh right in front of you and it's really nice and crispy when you get it. The texture is a lot like a waffle but better. We got the red bean, nutella, and custard. All of the flavors were delicious! I think these honestly might be better than the soft serve! read more

My husband and I stopped at Ontario Mills for a little window shopping and saw this self serve ice cream place called @somisomiicecream. On their website they describe Somi Somi as, "A special Korean dessert known as "Ah-Boong", a fish-shaped waffle cone filled with your choice of filling and topped with soft serve." This location is small because it's inside the Ontario Mills mall but they work quick. It's the day after Christmas and the mall is so busy but I didn't wait more than I want to say 5 mins for my order. That's huge and I have been to another SomiSomi in Arcadia. So I am impressed with the sheer movement of this place and the customer service was amazing especially since the holidays can be brutal on the service industry. I completely understand if the service takes a tiny hit due to how busy it was but not at all. This place is on top of their stuff. In terms of tasty I personally love the waffle meets pancake like texture. Soft but has a little crunch then you get a filling choice and then you can pick your soft serve and toppings are included. I love that you don't have to pay extra for every little topping. You can always just get the fishes alone with a filling or ice cream alone if you want. This is a fun shop and the novelty never gets old for me. It's just a fun dessert that is always a joy to have. It's also one of those instagramable treats that taste just as good as it looks. Highly recommend if your at this mall. read more

I have always been a big SomiSomi fan, so when I saw I was nearby one I had to get some. My dad and I went to pick up three Ahboongs: Ube Oreo, Ube and Milk and Milk Tea. We had to wait almost 10 minutes for our ahboongs to be ready. When we were called to pick up our order, I noticed that all three of the soft serves were melting already. We wanted to eat them when we got back to our hotel since we got one for my brother too, but they were melting so quickly even though it was a cold evening. The short drive back was very chaotic and messy. The ahboongs are delicious, but I definitely recommend eating them in the mall if you get one. We were only a few minutes away from our hotel but they melted almost completely in the time it took us to get back. read more

I love the soft serve ice cream and taiyaki cones from SomiSomi. They often rotate their flavors. You can check out their Instagram to know which flavors are in stock. My favorites are matcha and black sesame. You also have the option to get the swirl option, which combines two flavors! The taiyaki cone has different filling options: Nutella, red bean, custard, oreo, cheddar, and taro. Be sure to eat your ice cream quickly as it melts fast since the taiyaki cone is often served warm. read more

So happy they opened one at Ontario Mills! The first few grand opening days they offered a free Taiyaki with the purchase of one Ah-boong. They said the filling for the taiyaki will be random, but lucky me I got a custard one :) The line was not too long...maybe 5 customers ahead of me. And because they were working assembly line style, our order was ready fairly quick! Tip: get your ah-boong in a cup! I learned the hard way last time and spilled ice cream all over my shirt, legs, and floor. read more

I've wanted to try Somi Somi for a long time and finally had the chance to try it! I got the Milk and Ube with red-bean filled takiyaki. Unfortunately, due to COVID, I wasn't able to get the real experience of eating this right away. I walked outside to enjoy this and it melted and the takiyaki wasn't as "fresh and warm." However, I still enjoyed it and felt it had good quality ingredients and they have different flavors and options. Really like the shop with the cute decor. It is inside the mall, past the food court. This is a fun place but I was super bummed that this particular SomiSomi didn't have chocolate flavor. I got the mix of matcha and ube. The ice cream is delicious. More dense and creamy than most. And the fish is a must! I recommend getting it upside down. My fave combo is Nutella filled fish with chocolate and then toasted coconut. Service was good. Not a place to hang out, it's super small and no seats. I knocked off a star for lack of chocolate flavor otherwise would be a solid four. read more

The Oreo didn't have any flavor. The cookie butter was just ok. I do like that it is dairy free for people with lactose issues. I would be willing to try a different flavor again. It was just ok for me though. read more

The meats were fresh and flavorful, especially the beef options, and if you enjoy Korean BBQ and eating lots of meat, this is definitely a great spot. They also serve complimentary Korean side dishes, and the staff kept refilling them throughout our meal. The service was friendly once we were seated, and everyone was attentive during dinner. There were a couple of things worth mentioning. When we first arrived, no one greeted us, so we stood at the entrance for a few minutes unsure whether to wait or seat ourselves. The seating is also a bit tight, especially during busy hours. One helpful tip for future diners: go early. Yelp still shows they're open until midnight, but when we visited, they actually closed at 10:30 PM, with last call around 10:00 PM. We arrived a little after 9 PM and only had about 30 minutes before last call, so next time I'd definitely plan to get there earlier. We spent about $42 per adult, and kids are charged based on their height. Overall, the food was tasty, the service was good, and I'd happily come back. Just arrive a little earlier so you can enjoy your meal without feeling rushed.

Their bossam is good, but comes out lukewarm and a bit underwhelming. Their salad though is super delicious, whatever vinagrette they use I wish I could have on hand all the time! Two tofu combos with their most expensive options rang out to around $75 with no drinks, which is definitely on the pricier side. We had leftovers, but this isn't a regular meal that you can go out for often. I'll continue to keep this spot close for when I'm craving tofu soup and purple rice nearby.

Eventually, we had to get up and ask for our check ourselves because apparently that was too much to expect. At that point, it was obvious that nobody working there cared whether we had a good experience or not. I've worked in customer service and understand that places get busy, but this wasn't a matter of being busy, it was a matter of not caring. We were treated as if we didn't exist. If this is the standard of service this restaurant accepts, there are plenty of other places that deserve your money far more than this one. I will not be returning, and I would not recommend this place to anyone expecting even the bare minimum level of customer service. Tacos were good, ill give them that.
