They had a small kitchen and the food smelled great, but we stuck to our plan. They had several drinks on tap and I switched to a NA ginger cider. My friend loke his iced vanilla coffee. They donuts looked too good to pass up. My friend got glazed chocolate with chocolate filling. He said it was good but too rich to finish in a sitting. I got the blueberry lemon. It was so good and refreshing. I also like that they didn't use artificial coloring. Sourpuss Donuts is such a fun Mission Beach find! I don't think I'd ever had a sourdough donut before, so I was excited to give them a try. They have a rotating donut menu & when we stopped by there were 6 donuts in the case to choose from (mix of filled and classic options). We split the Strawberry Homer and the Peanut Butter Chocolate. The sourdough donuts were light, fluffy, and you could tell they were made with high-quality ingredients. The Strawberry Homer was good but a little plain in my opinion (nothing too memorable). The Peanut Butter Chocolate, though, was the real star! It was filled with a rich peanut butter mousse and topped with a decadent chocolate glaze. Yum! An interesting business name as I think the owners wanted to do a word play on the fact that their signature product is an organic sourdough brioche donut. Sourpuss Donuts is the latest tenant in this Mission Beach suite that has mainly operated as a taqueria or bar and grill over the years. Because it's located so close to Belmont Park, parking in one of the common lots and walking over is easier than trying to find a curbside spot on Mission Blvd. The shop is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. On the other days of the week, the closing time is 1:30 or when they sell out. I almost ran into that unfortunate situation during my visit as all of the daily inventory was nearly depleted. No individual donuts were left in the display cases at the service counter. The menu sheet listed three kinds of donut sandwiches and even one of those was unavailable. That left me with choosing the Donut BEC (Bacon, Egg, Cheese) Sando for my order. A plain sourdough donut was sliced in half and filled with scrambled egg, crispy bacon, raw milk cheddar cheese, and a special sauce. The dough was very soft and not too sweet which allowed the savory components to stand out. At $12, it was rather pricey. A single donut cost $6.50 so we are talking about premium pricing for a unique product. The donut flavors are regularly rotated with around four to six types sold daily based on the signs I saw on the empty display cases. Besides the sandwiches, the menu also offered three kinds of bowls and some sides. Beverages included coffee, chocolate milk, cider, cold brews, kombucha, and lemonade. Indoor seating was limited to one table and a bench near the front windows. The outdoor patio on the south end of the structure had more tables with canopies for shade. Holy Moly! Sourdough and Brioche Doughnuts, you can't go wrong with those! I picked up and sourdough cinnamon twist and a cup of coffee. The twist was terrific. My favorite part was the texture. It was soft, but had a nice slight pull and a great chew. The sugar and cinnamon levels were just right. I just had to try the savory parmesan and salami doughnut holes. I just had to. It was a great choice. It was even better than the twist. It was super soft, butter, ans packed with parmesan cheese flavor. It's a winner! Ok- my DIL looks for places that cook with good ingredients, so this place was on her list and I tagged along. Sourdough donuts. Yes, they do taste different and for us, in a very good way. So soft and cooked in coconut oil. So if you aren't used to those flavors, it will be different. I ate the Santa Fe Smash burger which included mild Hatch green chili, cheddar cheese and sourdough bun. Wow. It was perfection. Note- it is a bit on the smaller size, but also a perfect serving size. Some may find the prices a bit high, but you get what you pay for. I also like supporting a small business owner who is using high quality, organic ingredients. The fries (cooked in coconut oil) had great flavor. Salted just right and cooked golden. We also tried their FANCY deviled eggs. Again, very tasty and beautifully presented. We parked at the Mission Bay Park parking lot. It was a short walk. Organic sourdough brioche bun, grass fed patty, raw cheddar, chile, and beef tallow fries. The bun is so soft freshly made. I saw an advertisement for this place and had a perfect breakfast bowl, Cali breakfast, which was eggs, avocado, and cheddar over a bed of fries, and exactly what I needed. The coffee was amazing, and sitting on the deck, taking in the beach vibe, was so relaxing. The owners were on site, and you couldn't have asked for nicer, more accommodating people.
