Souvla is one of my favorite fast casual restaurants and I'm so happy this location opened in the marina. This location's on the smaller side then the other ones of been to but just as good. My go to is the chicken salad and baklava Greek yogurt. I also discovered you can order the salads "Greek style" meaning it comes with fries on top so this is a great option if you don't want to get a full side. But I would recommend getting the full side of fries with the dipping saucers because they're amazing. The frozen Greek yogurt tastes like Greek yogurt's supposed to taste- meaning don't expect something sweet because it's pretty tart. If you want it sweeter I'd recommend getting it with the baklava or honey topping! I'll definitely keep returning to souvla and it still remains one of my favorites in the city for a fresh and filling meal. read more

This review is just for the dessert! We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon to grab frozen Greek yogurts to go. I opted for the one with baklava crumbles & honey syrup. For the $5 price, this was a very generous portion. The baklava added a nice texture and sweetness, though I do wish there was more of it - perhaps layered thorughout the yogurt, rather than one pile on the top. The honey added sweetness as well, though it wasn't my favorite because it got really hard/sticky from the temperature of the yogurt. I ordered the chicken wrap and salad, greek fries, along with sour cherry and honey yogurts. The salad comes with a yogurt sauce and olive oil. Chicken was very light and well seasoned in both. Also paired very well with the kale and lettuce. And the slices of Mandarin oranges included were such a treat too! I also enjoyed the Greek fries, and found them to be fried to a perfect crisp. The Greek yogurts were also very delicious, although very small in portion. I wish either they came in more sizes, or filled the cup a bit more. I never feel like I get quite enough lol. Also keep in mind that anything "extra" you ask for will incur a small fee, such as utensils, sauces, etc. They also will not give you extra napkins here. Chicken salad is amazing! I went in a bit skeptical thinking this place was going to be overrated but it really wasn't. Came just for the frozen greek yogurt! I knew of their location in the mission district, but didn't know there was one on chestnut street. I was in the area for Soul Cycle, and googled Souvla, and it popped up! I was so excited, and ended up walking there. The service was mighty fast; before I paid, my greek yogurt was ready! Frozen Greek Yogurt with Baklava & Honey ($5): GET THIS ONE! There wasn't much honey, but I didn't mind. I literally eat greek yogurt everyday for breakfast, so it's about time I tried its frozen counterpart. It had that slight tartness to it, and the baklava was chewy and sticky which went well with the smooth yogurt-opposites attract! They give you a good amount of baklava, and I made sure to distribute it while eating the yogurt (taking a small piece of it and then scooping some yogurt onto the spoon), so I could savor both as long as possible. NGL, the consistency of the baklava reminded me of pecan pie, and it was missing the flaky phyllo dough aspect. This is perfect for a hot day, or a healthier dessert/snack alternative to ice cream! Next time I have to try their food because Mediterranean is one of my favorite cuisines. read more

What I love about a four item menu is there is no room for filler or compromise. I had the lamb leg in salad form. Maybe I still chose badly despite having almost no choice. Maybe the other three Souvla mains are great, and I got the one bad, poorly cooked one. If so, I will be missing out forever on whatever it is City-dwellers love about this chain, because I am not returning. The most crucial flaw was the lamb itself. It was well done. Actually, it was overly done to the point of a dozen or so bites being tough and jerky-like. But, even the fact that lamb would be well-done AT ALL when I did not ask for it, caught me by surprise. Who prefers lamb this way, and who expects it by default? Not I. It barely tastes like lamb. All the scary, raunchy, borderline-funky meat smells were absent, and at that point I don't understand what I'm creating such a huge carbon footprint for when I could be eating any other protein. Perhaps drying out the lamb makes sense for Souvla's gyro, but it spoiled my salad from the first bite. But, at least this made what might be a hard review easier. There were so many missteps in this dish - I'll name them below - but even so, this could have been a difficult and nuanced review in light of the lamb bowl's good price. The price is good because you receive two meal's worth of (for lack of a less-cliched word) fresh food: decent quality but not highly flavorful veggies, presumably made-in-shop-dressing, and supposedly choice bits of lamb - though, what the condition of this cute hunk of meat was before it was cooked into a near-jerky state is only a guess, now - at not much more than it would cost to enjoy two "power bowls" of highly processed and preserved (but really delicious) food from Taco Bell. But then, it's worth questioning why Souvla forces her patrons to buy two meal's worth of food in the first place. This portion is just too big. I came at 4pm, following: 8 hours of sleep, a 9am wake-up, a workout, a small brunch, and nothing else - yet, this was twice the food that I needed. Souvla should offer a half-bowl. But setting aside the nuanced price/portion question, this bowl was a disaster. There were no powerful flavors. The sour notes (from the pickled onion; there are no olives) and pungent notes were all toned down to offensively inoffensive levels. This was Greek, neutered and Americanized, then retroactively dressed up with a halo of fine-food sourcing, to arrive at a California-immigrant cuisine that wouldn't make sense to any actual immigrant. Don't strap a helmet on my lamb. Don't put a seat belt on my cheese. I want to be smothered in funk and fat and dead animal. I want my food to be hideous and make me worry I'm going to die, even if it's a salad. Souvla's salad was rife with "health food"-ish compromises. The dish is JUST NOT FAT ENOUGH. Note especially the heavy greens at the bottom: doused with yogurt to mask their fiber (at first glance, I thought the greens were cooked within some sort of sour cream, for pungency - but no, they are fresh and bland), thus neutralizing the delicious yogurt, AND squandering the opportunity to put something from the veggie kingdom with actual flavor in that place. Then the feta: when dispersed over a base of lettuce, it goes from being a bold note of tang accenting fat to a sober replacement (in the logic of a health-food-bowl) for more dangerous alternate fats. The feta becomes utilitarian. It should be raunchy and wild. The only element on which Souvla's lamb salad succeeded, was the delight I felt in combining the protein and tiny available streaks of fat with the crispy texture of lettuce. This is what one looks for in a protein-based bowl, as opposed to a wrap, and the lamb salad occasionally hit that craving. But, I can get the same bite-pleasure from a Taco Bell bowl, with stronger, far more diverse flavors. That's... really sad. read more

Because I'm gluten free, I haven't gotten the baklava one.... it looks amazing though! However, I've gotten the frozen yogurt with olive oil and salt and loved it. Souvla is a Mediterranean restaurant, specializing in salads, wraps, and frozen yogurts. I Came here on a Tuesday night 7:00pm and it was quite busy... but the table turnaround time is pretty quick. I ordered the chicken salad and thought it was pretty good! I liked the ingredients inside the salad: oranges, onions, kale, lettuce, and a few other things. The sauce which is a mixture of their take on a yogurt ranch dressing with an olive oil dressing. I wish I had gotten the dressings on the side and mixed it in myself because they put so much dressing that my salad was pretty much drenched in it and the flavor of the dressing was overpowering the fresh taste of the salad. The frozen yogurt here is amazing. I was struggling to decide between two flavors so the server let me combine two flavors in one. So I got the Baklava and cherry flavors. The two went really well together in my opinion... and I will probably be back for more! The frozen yogurt itself is really light and slightly tart, making it the perfect post dessert snack. Tried two kinds of their frozen Greek yogurt: First, let's talk about the yogurt itself: unlike traditional Greek yogurt which tends to be incredibly sour and thick in its original form, their plain yogurt is a bit more thin and weak in taste - which makes them easier to eat in my opinion. Their yogurt has the smell of lactic acid bacteria fermentation, but the flavor of the milk itself is barely noticeable. In other words, it is a little bit "boring " when we were only tasting the yogurt without adding other things to it. If you are someone who is looking for your "traditional" Greek yogurt experience, there is a chance that you'll be disappointed. Wildflower honey Greek yogurt: at the first few tried, the combination tasted pretty good because the honey adds a special taste to the yogurt. The honey has the right level of sweetness which my friend and I both like, but we both think the scent of wildflowers couldn't be tasted. Something that we don't appreciate about the honey is it quickly sticks together into pieces (probably because the yogurt was too cold) and can't be mixed with the yogurt anymore. So if you get the wildflower one, make sure you stir them up quickly! baklava crumbles with honey Greek yogurt : the server forgot to gave us honey that day, but we didn't mind and just went with it. The crumbles is surprisingly a better combination with the yogurt because it adds more layers to the yogurt and makes it flavorful. The chicken salad at Souvla is my favorite salad in SF with Mary's free-range chicken, "Granch"dressing, fennel, navel orange, pickled red onion, pea shoots and mizithra cheese. I brought my family to SF to enjoy the day. We ordered takeout (salads) from Souvla via online and planned on having a picnic on the Presidio lawn. Picked up our food. Headed out. When we finally settled and started to eat, we noticed there weren't any utensils. We ended up eating our salads with our hands. I emailed Souvla about this. Their response was utensils need to be requested and there is an extra charge. I guess that was something that was on their site when ordering but it wasn't very obvious when placing the order.
