The two stars are for the food and products in the store, which are great! The updated review taking it down to two instead of my original five is due to the rude customer service I experienced today. Another review said the same thing. My friend and I spent around 16$ on food and pastries. When my friend saw that they now accept EBT, he went to pay for a meal to go with his EBT card. When the lady in her 30's with the reddish hair and noise ring rang him up, she gave an unnecessary dour attitude and seemed like it was such a nuisance that we returned to spend more money at the establishment. She then told my friend very condescendingly that EBT couldn't be used for every meal purchase. Umm... Payment is a payment! Then why place the sign saying that you accept that form of payment if you are going to have an attitude when someone pays that way? Especially after we paid for the previous meal and pastries with our debit cards. It was quite uncalled for. She then gave him his food with no thank you or smile. I haven't experienced any attitude problems at this business in my 12 years of eating and shopping here. So, it was surprising. The owner has always seemed like a nice fellow. When they first opened, the food was really good for an incredible price. They used to have this fantastic mango pumpkin curry. I've never had anything like it, and still haven't. They stopped offering it at some time pre-pandemic. Maybe it will come back. The Rava Masala Dosa has also been very good. The quality of the food has steadily declined over the last 10+ years since we first started eating here. It is still fast and cheap. And the workers there are still usually very distant, cold and suspicious. But all things considered, not bad for vegan or vegetarian Indian for the price. Decent place to pick up Indian dry groceries. They have a good selection of things you will need to make god Indian food. The prices are fine, and people are friendly. Like other Indian grocery stores they have a great restaurant which is pretty popular. They have good lunch and dinner menu items which are decently priced and are a good value. The grocery store needs better organizing. It is chaotic to find stuff at times. They lack fresh groceries. I mean they have some but not well stocked. I asked for papadam, they gave me a pre-fab processed something warmed in the microwave. the masala dosa was tepid, not hot, and the garlic and onion were still raw, like finding pebbles in my dosa. and the lady who preps and hands you your food was more surly and unpleasant than usual. I am a devoted customer of this India grocery store and eatery for over several years now. I am so grateful for all of their kind hospitality and customer service every time I go, always greeting me when I walk in and being very helpful when I have a question about a product available. I have been going there for all my shopping essential bulk items, like organic spices & seasoning, organic mung beans, organic ghee, organic teas and coffee, soups, chutneys, fresh produce... I love the Moringa toothpaste and Chandrika soaps. I go to stock up on fresh bundles of sage, camphor, Laxmi Dhoop, also, they have a huge variety of incense & incense holders that I use daily in my household. I've gotten several beautiful large tapestries. Just last night I bought all of the cow dung in stock, 52 pieces to be exact, to use in my sacred fire ceremony during sunrise and sunset, purifying the atmosphere, this is called Agnihotra. Also, setting an intentional prayer for my friends here at India Sweets & Spices! But, WAIT... there's more! I just shared with you my experience with the grocery part of it... I do love the eatery, too!! I have dined in, done take out, and ordered delivery on Door Dash! They do have the best authentic chai tea! My go-to favorite thing to order is the samosas!! I absolutely love the taste of the samosas and their crispy texture, with the sweet sauce and green spice sauce on the side. I'll also order the Wada sambar!!! What!!! I've been going to this place since it was a billiards hall in the 90s. It's an ok location on Los feliz and can be convenient when you're driving through. But the restaurant feels like more of a market than a restaurant. When I went vegan I started com here again for the food. The food is good, not great. It's a bit oily and sometimes too spicy. They don't seems to have a grip on how to be consistent with the spice. The service has always been a bit bland. They seem to not care if you don't understand them. But I've always been ok with it, until today. Today, the lady behind the counter was so rude. She just had no manners and treated everyone like trash. We asked her which dishes were mild because my daughter can't handle spice. She said "they're all mild" . But when we got home they were all spicy. I'm getting tired of dealing with these people. Pav bhaji Sundays. If you don't know what it is, find out! Definitely the best dish here and only available Sunday. We came back from a hike with the dog, they have 4 tables outside and so we were able to chill and eat for awhile. Indian tea is consistently good here too but beware, they are not ashamed to sell you old and expired food so shop carefully. We've had bad milk here so if something tastes funny, it's probably not good. The other food is ok at best. Parking is super limited but usually at least 1 spot available. This is a sprawling warehouse of a place with shelves stacked with Indian groceries and yet I can't seem to find items I frequently find in other Indian stores that are perhaps 1/20th its size (nod to Asia Foods in Culver City). On a recent trip I couldn't find Deep tamarind sauce (used to make chaat or as a condiment for samosas) only Maggi, couldn't find Indian yoghurt in the refrigerated section in a size suitable for anything less than restaurant scale, and couldn't find regular kidney beans packets in the size I needed. The owner pointed me to organic kidney beans. Sure, but that wasn't what I wanted. I wasn't able to find the interesting selection of millets (an unusual grain) that I find in small crammed stores elsewhere. They also don't have the best selection of hennas. What's an Indian lady who relies on two trusted henna brands to think? Things are oddly amiss for such a sprawling facility. I found the cafe to be wanting. I got the south indian platter just to try it out. The dosa was passable, however the idli was very tough and non-edible, the vada was another coagulated chewy mess. The sambar was a joke of thin, runny, sloppy effort to create a lentil/vegetable stew. I couldn't even. Waste of calories because the taste was so dour. Also noted a rather off-handed manner in the lady serving up... I come here only because I'm too far from the Indian shops down Venice Boulevard in the original Little India of the LA region from the 1970s....but this store, aside from its very pleasant owner who is solicitous to all his patrons, serves only as a neighborhood-proximity consolation and not my first choice. read more

I am so disappointed with the attitude of the staff here. 1) A guy (African American) was sitting on my left drinking his tea after finishing up his meal, the staff (lady) comes to him and asks him to leave as other people have to eat and need the space ? What the hell .. I see that and invite him to sit with me as a friendly gesture, as I was finishing up my meal the owner announces in the dining hall and asks me and to hurry up so there is space for other customers which there were none at the time ! Also there was plenty of space outside ... This is the first time I took my time eating a meal there usually I am in a rush ... but never coming back here again ! 2) Last time I was here I saw a customer yelling at them as they refused to pack his food in a Togo box he threw the food and said he is never coming back again ..the customer was with a baby who was crying .. This cafe cum store has its own small parking lot, metered street parking is available as well. We have been coming to this store for a while as this is the nearest Indian store around us. We only purchase or eat here if we have to, in emergency. The store is looked after by a nice Indian family, but the employees they have are OMG. Please do check the expiration date of your purchase. They have a wide variety of Indian products from lentils to snacks, from butter to frozen paranthas. Whenever we use to come here to get anything, we used to always order their samosas. But since some time their samosas are turning out to be bad, as in the potato stuffing inside is spoilt, slimy I mean they are not fresh and cause its spoilt the smell is soo bad yuck. They provide chutneys along with the samosas, but the ladies working their just wont give them according to the number of samosa plates ordered and if you ask them to give more, they start making annoying faces. They have combo meals with different curries everyday, we personally do not like them as the curries as very salty. Only on weekends they serve Halwa (Indian sweet dish made of Semolina). The rubber idlis, ice dosas and dull sambar..absolutely threw my money away. The vadas clearly fried in the morning and re fried in the afternoon. I got one A.M vada and one P.M vada. I know this because I wanted to see for myself during my bachelor days if I could recycle vadas fr previous days. So I recognise the look and taste. WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS PLACE?? First time here. The place is huge...a combination market and fast food eatery, with plenty of tables that can accomodate large parties. It's basic patio furniture, probably more comfy to do take-out. The market is fun and fascinating...it's not a modern place, it's a cluttered place, but everywhere there's something colorful to look at... The owner celebrates his childrens' birthdays with a free community meal, one in March and the other in the Fall. There was a FB event notice, and my cousin came here in the early afternoon and then text me... since he knows how much I LOVE Indian food. The birthday girl was there saying hello...and food was served by helpers/staff...I was there at 5 pm and fresh food was being served up...basmati rice, a spicy pea and tofu dish, a meatball dish, and lentils...naan...salad....a dessert. The meal was served at the back of the market instead of in the main dining area. And people were also sitting at tables in the parking lot...the food was just okay, but it's the thought that counts! TIP: There's dedicated parking and a really nice mural on the wall that you don't see from busy Los Feliz Boulevard...it's a nice surprise for people who park back there. This review is based solely on the hot vegetarian dishes they serve. I've been here about 4 times since finding out about it this year. The little tin compartment plate they serve in packs a punch, flavor and quantity-wise. The ladies providing service are courteous. I have not had a bad meal here. The pakora is especially delicious. India Sweets & Spices Los Feliz cleaned the place up some more... I went for cardamom pods, but who's wants overpriced spices. And I went there to feed my regular craving of khadji pakora, which they didn't make today... I didn't find the ladoo or burfi that I'm accustomed too either... However, everything else being fresh made, I decided to get food for a few days. Although, 2 curry containers are ample for vegetarian dinner (3 curry containers for vegan) with appetizer savories, rice or naan/roti and optional dessert. Their sooji halwa made with cream of wheat, ghee, honey & carrot juice looked interesting... plain and orange, (I've only had it made with grated carrots, milk, sugar, cardamon & pistachio before now). This is the closest Indian store to me, so I come here periodically for staple items. Ghee, both branded and homemade. Good selection of rice, with both Indian and Pakistani brands. Spices are what you'd expect: cheaply packaged, but compared to American grocery products, both cheaper and sometimes noticeably better in quality. The refrigerated selection is fairly limited, but they have packaged paneer and some other items you may want. Plenty of other household goods and sundries too. So far, I've been satisfied. Service is what you'd expect. I believe it's a family-owned store, and some of the people working the store are older aunties. Some are friendly. Some have a more flat style of interaction. I can't really speak to the food quality on the restaurant side, as I've never tried the food here. read more

Spicy, but oh so worth it. Wow, they do add chili spice in most foods there, even something mundane like samosas. Had the special with fried bread, basmati rice, some sort of chickpea in milk, green salad, spicy pickled veg., with two curries: chana and pakora,and mango lassi.
