We opted to have dinner here on a whim and it was a good experience. We were hoping to try out the dinner buffet, but arrived just as it was closing down. It ends at 8pm. We decided to dine here anyway although the restaurant was empty. The dinner menu had a wide range of curries and appetizers and options for vegetarian and meat based dishes. I liked the variety of dishes available. Pricing seemed fair. Since it was our first time dining here, we opted to order a thali and split that. There's three thali options that include different entrees and have different costs. We went with the 'rani' option which has more curries. The appetizer includes one potato samosa and some veggie pakoras (fried fritters) with chutney sauce on the side. The samosa was okay, the potatoes were a bit bland, but we liked the pakoras and the green chutney was a nice dipping sauce. Now for the thali, the portions looked a bit smaller than expected but it was enough food for us. The rice wasn't too great, but we liked the mixed veggie curry and the lamb curry, which had a nice, flavorful and earthy curry sauce. The onion kulcha paired well with all 3 of the curries. Unfortunately, the chicken tikka masala was a bit too salty and lacked enough chicken pieces, so it was less balanced. I was hoping it would be better and tasty, but we didn't enjoy it sadly. The thali also included a choice of dessert (either kheer or rice pudding or gulub jamun which is like sweet syrupy dessert balls). I was curious about the gulub jamun and it was fine, but didn't really leave an impression. Customer service was friendly and efficient, we saw a few folks pick up delivery orders but it was quiet and empty up until we finished our meal and another couple walked in to dine in. Parking in the area can be limited, so be prepared to circle around a few times and walk a block or two. We're still curious about the lunch/dinner buffet options and will plan to return to try that out in the future. read more

San Francisco has many different buffets over the years and some types of foods have decreased and some have increased. There use to be more pizza buffets in the past in San Francisco. There was also the lucky star of the show in the Civic Center Moonstar which is now gone. There is an increasing numbers of growing buffets when it comes to Taiwanese and Korean Hot Pot. In the city still have some sushi AYCE places which are also good but most of them have a time limit. For some reason lots of places in the suburbs of San Francisco have plenty of AYCE. There are still some good options in the city. There is a place which has been in business for decades offering Indian food and also have a lunch buffett. It is located on Geary boulevard in San Francisco and it is called Star India. On a Spring stroll on Geary Boulevard I landed at Star India . Inside there are lots of plants along with wall art with some table. In the back during lunch is a self serve buffet bar . I ended up having their buffet . I got the Chicken Tikka Masala and it was delicious . It wasn't very spicy and it was savory with generous chunks of chicken. I also got the Saag Panner and it was favorable and tasty. I also got the naan and it was a bit flakey in SF. Overall it is one of the good values for an Indian buffet in the city. Go Star india and serve your self at the buffet "bar"and get some tandoori chicken with a bit of "char"the Indian food is good and up to "par" for me when it comes to this buffet show it's the Chicken Tiki Masala which is the "Star" San Francisco had lots of buffets during its "glory"and it had buffets from every food "category" you get you can go to Roundtable, Canton and to MoonStar the landscape was spread out among the different SF "territory" now you can go to Star India and do a lemon squeeze for the chicken "tandoori" read more

Looking for a solid Indian lunch spot in San Francisco? This local gem really delivered. My friend Jun took me to this lunch buffet which costs $21.95 you get a chai drink and naan (you have to eat in person) but I decided to stay fit and ordered the chicken tikka masala with rice and mango lassi. Their chicken tikka masala is simply heavenly. The curry tastes so good with the rice and the mango lassi is delicious. Service is by the waiter on Tuesday 03/10/2026 is outstanding. Came on a weekend night for dinner around 6 pm. When we got there, it was pretty empty so we were able to choose where to sit. I ordered a chicken tikka masala with butter naan. Our server was amazing, took our order quickly and came to refill water a few times. Food came out in about 10 minutes. To be honest, portion size was a bit small for $16, especially since you would have to order naan or rice to go with it. With that said, I did enjoy the taste, though chicken was kinda dry. Star India is on the Aadvantage dining list, and we're trying to build up miles, so we stopped in after visiting the Legion of Honor. We were the only customers there the whole time, so attention and service were quite good. We ordered veggie pakora, and I had vegetable biryani medium spicy, while The Wife ordered vegetable Navratan korma, mild. I also ordered a glass of gewürztraminer. All the wines were $5-7 per glass, and healthy pours! Most of the entrees were $13.95. The korma was more tomato forward than usual, but still tasty. Kind of like a milder tikka masala sauce. And water chestnuts, yay! The biryani had a good mix of veggies and cashews. Potato, cauliflower, broccoli, corn, peas, etc. We also got our first poori in many years, which was quite nice. The room was very colorful, and oddly, the men's room decor (wall and floor design very modernist) was completely different from everything else. Must be leftover from whatever this space was before? How in the world is this place rated so high? It's absolutely horrible. The Dahl soup was watery and bland. The chai tea tasted like they washed out the drink dispenser with bleach then added some chai leaves. The server was missing in action. The chicken tandoori and Tikka masala was skimpy and they didn't refill it. I love kheer as a dessert and this is one of the worst kheers I've ever had. We came in around 8pm on Friday and to our surprise it was completely empty and stayed empty during our meal until we left. We ordered veggies, lamb naan, butter chicken and meat samosas. -veggies where lighted breaded and tasted great with the sauces they had. They were not oily and were filling. -meat samosas were on the oily side and didn't really have any taste. Just a ball of unseasoned meat. -butter chicken didn't really taste like butter chicken. It had a very strong coconut taste and the portion size for the price was a bit disappointing. -the naan was great! Aside from the meat not adding much to the flavor the naan itself was very tasty! Warm and crunchy on the edges. Service was excellent, it could had been because the restaurant was completely empty but we never had to ask for more water and the food came out very fast so we absolutely loved that. They call it Star India, but it should be called 5-Star India!! Great selection of food and RARE to find an Indian buffet that's open for both dinner and lunch. AYCE!! Food was hot and fresh and delicious. I also love meat dishes so this place 100% delivered. Tandoori chicken, lamb curry, and butter chicken were super tasty. Star India is the OG buffet of the 90's... I remember stuffing my belly for under $10 even just 10 years ago and then the pandemic shut the buffet down. Well here we are 2023 and their buffet is now $22!! Featured: Tandoori chicken -- little dry Saag paneer -- classic Lamb -- absolute highlight Vegetable curry -- good blend Tiki masala chicken -- basic and dry Daal -- didn't try but looks standard and they had some other type of veggie curry that I didn't try Chai tea -- I like that you can have it unsweetened They bring basic of naan to your table. Service was pretty attentive. We came around 1:30 on a Saturday and the restaurant was pretty empty. There's metered parking in front or you can look around for residential parking that's not too far away. $22pp is pretty expensive for what you get but if nothing else, you can get your money's worth just by eating two plates of lamb curry like I did!! The service was poor -- the server was unhelpful and dismissive when asked for dish recommendations, just saying "everything is good" without any real input. We ordered Gobhi Manchurian, Goat Curry, Chicken Pasanda, chicken biryani and Garlic Naan. Food portion was less for the price. Gobhi Manchurian was more like a regular sabzi -- not crispy or coated well. Goat Curry was okay. Chicken Pasanda was the best dish -- creamy and flavorful, would recommend. Garlic Naan was soft, buttery, and well-cooked. The biryani tasted more like pulao, with oversized onion slices dominating the dish. Overall, not a satisfying experience.
