I'm usually let down by a place with this level of hype, but I was pleasantly surprised by how great the food and service were here. For apps, the meatball sliders and chickpea fries were excellent. The potato chip salad wasn't anything special (it's just a regular salad with potato chips in it?), but definitely not bad. For pizza I'm usually a thin-crust guy, but I have to say, I really enjoyed the crisp, yet doughy crust on these pies (and good thing, because there's a lot it). The best pies I tried were the Ploughman (who knew horseradish pizza worked?) and the pepperoni square pie (a special at the time). The banana soft serve was also a 10/10. The mini cookies reminded me of Cookie Crisp, and we probably could've done without them. Our waiter was extremely attentive, knowledgeable, and kind. I can't remember his name, but he had fantastic recommendations on apps and wine. And while we were there, the owner even came out to see how we were enjoying our meal. Napoletana on the Outside, Roman in the Middle! 1. I am going back. 2. Stretch should be a stop on every pizza lovers journey. 3. My pie repped the best of two pizza worlds, Rome and Naples. I went with a pack of five to Stretch on Sunday night, my 4th night out in row. My taste buds were tired, and I had no expectations. The first thing we noticed was the outdoor dining hut, which looks like a trolley car from Rome, where there are no trolley cars. The two architects in our group loved the hut, and we named it the #1 in the city. Then we sat down, and the other 4 ordered appetizers, that were prepared with love, and then re-loved by my co-diners. I spent a few minutes touring the restaurant while they ate the apps, looking for the right pizza to order. I saw a pepperoni pizza and a square pizza right away. Rather impressed with how they looked, I sat back down, ready to order a Margharita pie. Which came quickly as per the great service. Now, forget about the hut, the service, the comfy aura of the dining room, the fresh beer, and the fab appetizers. They dropped a beauty in front of me, a fat crusted crispy looking pie. My first thoughts were, wow, Napoletana crust, with a Roman center. Which were immediately confirmed by my first slice. Which was amazing. My favorite pizza in Rome is Marmi's, in Trastervere, followed by Baffeto's. I love Sally's in New Haven, and Patsy's Harlem here in NYC. I like a crispy bottom crust, most of all. Which is nearly impossible to do with a Napoletana pizza. That's where Stretch shines. You get the best of both worlds. A fluffy, edible on it's own crust and a crispy bottomed center of the pie, in this case topped with great cheese and tasty tomato sauce. It's a five star pizza experience, fairly unique for it's mastery of two styles in one pie. We had five different kinds pizzas, and the rest of my crew loved their topped out versions too. The appetizers that I tried were not great. I tried the fries and the potato chip salad. The fries were somewhat interesting and unexpected. They were a bit bland but I could see how some people might like them. The salad on the other hand was terrible. Just sour mess with a bunch of vinegary potatoes - some from bags and others chopped and fried in house probably. I maybe ate like a third of it. The pizzas were better; the dough was crunchy and airy. I tried the original and the fennel sausage (don't really remember the exact name). They were both good but the topping pizza was better. That should tell you something. The pizza is good but not great. A mark of a great pizza place after all is how good the original is. I also tried their "on tap" cocktails. Both were pretty mediocre. After realizing each costs 17 bucks, mediocre became terrible. The bill came out to roughly $170 after tip. Yes. Two pizzas roughly 12 inches each and two apps and two drinks = $170. You walk away from this place thinking... ok Wylie Dufresne made his name in restaurants like WD50 (which I went to by the way) with creative cuisine. But with some things that are classic like pizza, you simply can't really apply that adventurous creativity to it. Pizza is pizza and that's the way it should stay. He probably realized that too. Greeters and waitpersons exude a vivacious presence. Each waitperson offers a unique visage and distinctive color garbs. Our waitperson in a short, brightish gray dress and an earring on the nose efficiently presents food. A host in a bright orange hue moves rapidly about the whole meal time. Cozy four-person tables abound; a long white wall brings out all vivid colors within the restaurant. 15 stools sit at the bar. Space is well cooled and not loud. All conversations throughout thrive. The Caesar Salad prelude has tasty parmesan, lettuce, and lemon. The pesto mozzarella sticks--what a special taste treat--outdo all companion dishes. Our two "floors" or levels of pizza, Classic NY and Nellie, arrive; the small plates are cute. The Nellie pizza with its roasted, pickled, and fried shallots exudes a much more savory dimension. The classic NY pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella, and parmesan needs a distinctive, rejuvenated spirit. Stretch needs to probe how to update the once classic NY pizza to the same level as the restaurant's fitting physical presence. Crazy - the pizza was fine the service a bit slow but very nice person working the bar. I ordered a Woodford Reserve with a little Diet Coke and when I got the bill they charged me 25.00 for ONE drink. It blew my mind. I live and work in NYC and even at the most prestigious restaurants in the city they don't charge $25.00. I complained to the manager and he said that is the going rate. Hah! Too bad - seemed like it could be a good place but a total rip off. FYI - the pizza was 24.00. A dollar less then the ounce and a half of liquor the served. Disappointing. read more

Stopped by for lunch when we had a pizza craving. Beautiful space inside and out. They kindly brought out a high chair for our toddler so we could at least try to enjoy our meal in somewhat peace. We had a glass of the Lambrusco on tap, tried the chickpea fries and got a ploughman pie to share. The fries were incredible!! I wasn't a huge fan of the flavors for the pie we got but had a nice dough. Ideal dinner, pizza was exceptional (we had old town). Chickpea fries were interesting and great. Caesar wss solid, super helpful that they offer a veggie version for my vegetarian wife. Great new place! The food is delicious and you can see that it's made and served with much care and attention to detail. The menu is super fun and creative. We tried a few things on the menu and everything was excellent. We had the basil chick pea fries - they were light and super tasty and came with a sauce that was highly addictive. We also had the pickled beet salad- I don't usually love beets but these were incredibly tasty. For pizzas, we had the classic and the Yolks on You. The crusts were crispy and chewy and they both were really yummy. We were quite full but forced ourselves to have dessert since they sounded interesting. We had the banana soft serve with babka breadcrumbs and peanut butter dip. Really great! The service was very friendly and attentive and the atmosphere casual and relaxed. It's called Stretch Pizza because you're going to wish you were wearing stretchy pants after you pack your belly with these pies. The highlight for me would be the mushroom pizza - and this is coming from a guy who thinks mushrooms are "mid" usually. Well not on this pizza! I'd been wanting to try this new place out since it opened! They have really interesting innovative pizza flavors which sounded really cool. When we arrived, the place was packed so we sat at the bar. We got the chickpea fries, the Ploughman, the Everything Pizza special, and the banana soft serve with the toppings. Everything was delicious! The chickpea fries were good, but they aren't something I crave, so I may not order these again--still tasty though, just not my preference over regular potato fries. The two pizzas we got were also very good. The Everything pizza could have been a little heavier on the cream cheese, but overall I liked it. And the banana ice cream was perfect to finish off with, especially with the toppings! The peanut butter drizzle on it was SO good and the soft serve has a great strong banana flavor. Things we liked: It's a nicely designed space w/ a focused menu and if you work or live near Madison Sq Park, it's very convenient to check out this new place on Park Ave right after work, etc. Things that surprised us: None of the things we ordered sparked a "this is so good!" response in the way we'd imagined, given the star power and nice pedigree behind this new concept. Service was friendly but slow (we were there at an off-peak time to avoid any rush). Lots of other places to get pizza or salads in the area, so am hoping that as Stretch is open a bit longer and hits their stride that things'll become more flavorful to help ensure success. read more

Why pay so much to taste Wylie Dufresne's creation when you can do it yourself? For calzone, just follow a scrambled egg youtube tutorial, any tutorial. Then proceed to ignore its call for low and slow temperature control, turn the heat to max and cook the egg till it's 10 min past well done. After wrapping some charred flatbread around it, your creation might still tastes better than the extremely bland, overcooked scrambled egg calzone. The pizza was honestly fine, though nothing special. For the hype this place has received, the hoop one needs to jump through, and the premium they are charging, it's hard not to feel cheated when you bite into stretch pizza's offerings. read more

Great pizza (particularly loved the old town and stranger. Wonderfully interesting menu that is different than your standard NYC pizza. Sadly the rest of the experience was lackluster. Service was slow, impersonal, and unaware: the ice cream machine was broken so we waited 40min for our ordered dessert despite multiple attempts to say "forget it." Each time it was only a few minutes away. No one ever apologized and seemed to acknowledge this was unacceptable. It then took another 20 min to get the check once we asked. Love this place and the interesting flavor combinations on the menu. Went back for lunch recently and was very disappointed that the carrot appetizer was no longer on the menu. Please bring it back in the fall. Despite my disappointment at the carrots, everything that we had was amazing . We had the fries , the Caesar salad and Pizza , and it was all delicious . A genuine treat. Have no hesitation and go for an upper-crust experience. Like most fellow New Yorkers, I like my pizza (extremely understating, "love", "slightly obsessed" is more like it). Stretch has easily made its way into my and my family's rotation. I've taken out-of-town friends and co-workers and confidently recommended to friends and tourists alike. The vibe is perfect - comfortable, low key yet extremely refined. ALL of the staff is so nice - warm, welcoming and helpful. I've been a handful of times with assorted folks and each time food and staff were absolutely spot on. The pizza (all the food) is delicious. Wylie and co., captures the flavor New Yorkers (I) grew up on while making it his own, with the Classic NY: perfect cheese/sauce ratio, great sauce with an outstanding crust reminiscent of a perfectly crunchy/chewy French baguette. All the specialty pies are whimsical while extremely delicious and satiating. Our last visit, Wylie even came by the table and spoke with my daughters. He was so gracious. My kids were bold enough (had the nerve) to mention they missed one of his specialty pies and desserts but understood a menu, particularly specials, need to change, evolve, etc... He was unbelievably kind and even made them a dessert! Talk about an honor! Me and my girlfriend stumbled upon this place yesterday while wandering through NYC, and boy am I glad. The ambience of this place is so nice, very clean and was very welcoming. The host was very nice since we didn't have reservations and the staff was extremely friendly and kind. We had their Daily special pizza which was a vodka sauce based pizza with shredded chicken, cilantro and this delicious tangy sauce on top. The dough was so airy and light which absolutely blew our minds and you can clearly taste the freshness of the pizza. I wish it was a little bigger because it was $22 but I would still go back and try their other pizzas. We also had 2 drinks 'That's what Shiso said' and 'Sting like a butterfly' the bartender was nice, but the drinks were ok (only because I have had better drinks for that price point ($19-22)). read more

This is my second time here in two weeks. It's so good that I was looking to make a third trip. I work in the neighborhood, so it's easy for me to have our date night here. It's interesting to see such an approachable restaurant with some clever ideas applied to it that I'd expect from WD. We've had the basil chickpea fries, which I agree look a little well done, but are absolutely delicious, especially with the stretch sauce. Good texture on the fries all the way through and the sauce seems to be an interesting take on romesco. We also had the carrots, which is definitely a take on elote. Super clever and delicious. They also let us taste the green goddess sauce with the garlic bread. They should sell these sauces as sides for crust dippers. Pies - had the Ploughman's and a special Sicilian style with just sauce and parm. The dough for the classic round is super tasty and sturdy. The Sicilian style was unadorned other than sauce and the right amount of parm. Again, delicious dough that was super airy and not heavy in the slightest bit. For dessert, we had a special soft serve (I forget the flavor) and also tried the banana soft serve. The added bits make it feel like Magic Shell, which folks from my era will know. Service is attentive but not overbearing. The servers we had each time were very knowledgeable about the food and techniques and put up with my over-enthusiastic questions. (I'm a nerd). The decor is really cool and I love the wall of pizza boxes. We stuck with wine and it's good, but I imagine that digging into a bottle of wine would be better than by the glass. We did get to meet WD for a second as he was touring the tables and then once again as we were leaving. I had about a minute with him each time and I'm sure I could talk for hours with the man. We will be back to try some more of the off kilter pies and and some of the classic offerings, while we can. Compared to all othe pizza joints in Nyc and Jersey this was definetly more high end. With Such a great Chef at the helm we thought we were in for a new pizza experience. The menu looks great with nice specials and good diversity. We ordered some drinks and got right to the menu. We ordered the carrot appetizer which was tasty but underwhelming. Maybe 3/4 c. of cooked carrots with some dressing for 15 dollars or so (not sure) that was tatsty but skimpy. Our other Appetizer were Chick Pea fries. 6 of them came with some dipping sauce and we dove in! The fritters were too soft to dip and broke every time we tried. The inside was gooey and loose. We did not enjoy them/although we were hungry and ate all six. For mains we got the Sicilian and the Old Town Pie. The Sicilian was light and airy but had a wierd gass flavor/like from the oven/idk!? My wife had the old towm which when hot was great but as it cooled we realized there was no sauce and it became a little dry and cracker like. We laugjed and said we needed a dipping sauce. The bill was 200 with tip. 3/4 c. carrots 6 fritters 2 personal pizza 2 alcohol drinks Nice experience and got to talk to Chef as he was at the podium, nice guy, but Stretch needs to stretch a bit more if they plan on being around after the tourists go away. read more

Very mediocre, overpriced pizza with unprofessional staff (to each other). The bartender and the hostess definitely had beef. They were both fine to me but seems like something you shouldn't be putting on display for everyone to see. On top of that, this restaurant hit on nearly every one of my pet peeves...smallest wine pour on earth for $17. Very average wine. We were told 45-60 minute wait yet there were multiple open tables (which is sometimes a reflection of being short-staffed but there were literally waiters everywhere, and it was prime dinner hour on a weekend). Disorganized, poorly managed front of the house (it was not explained that there was also a separate wait for bar stools; also the wait for our dinner table turned out to be 15-20 minutes not 45-60, which is good but makes you wonder how often the estimate swings +30 minutes the other way). Expensive pizza ($26 for 12" with sausage and peppers). Pizza tasted fine, absolutely fine but nothing notable. Specials and half the menu items were unnecessarily weird in a "let's make ourselves stand out" kind of way (pizza with mushroom, muenster and pumpernickel, ew).
