I cannot believe I've lived less than a mile away for a year and have never gone before! I've passed the place several times to and from Kind Kreme and yet... Anywho, now I've gone and I'll go again. First up-- the service was AWESOME. I cannot remember our waitress' name (I think it started with a B?) but she was fan-freaking-tastic. Seriously. Good customer service is, sad to say, a luxury these days and you best believe I sometimes make decisions based on service. The decor was cozy and comfy. Now....the food: - Raw Nachos - Mac and Cheese -Savory Corn Cakes -Chocolate Mousse Cup - Key Lime Pie. Nachos- were something totally different and yet, quite familiar. Jicama chips really work very well. HUGE portion. Mac and Cheese--- definitely the best vegan mac and cheese I've had and some of the best mac and cheese I've had. Period. Smokey, cheesy, and a bit of a crunchy crust. The bowl looked small, but was pretty much bottomless and I had to take a lot home. Savory Corn Cakes- Really good, but nothing super original. Just really freaking tasty. Again, HUGE portion. Chocolate Mousse Cup- A denser mousse than other mousses I've had- vegan or not. SUPER chocolaty. Key Lime Pie- Really tangy...almost too tangy of a filling, but the coconut pieces, creme, and crust were a nice offset. Nom Nom Nom. BTW. I didn't eat all of this by myself! One thing I noticed is that it was way less salty than a lot of restaurant food, which was great. I didn't feel bloated afterward. It was just really satisfying comfort food. Recently tried this place and was amazed. The kale salad. Oh my gosh. This place could literally put kale on the map. I mean, since when has kale been something that people actually want to eat? It's amazing for your body, but let's face it, it normally tastes like eating grass flavored magazine print. Not anymore. The staff is very knowledgeable and welcoming. They took time to explain which foods are raw, gluten free and vegan. They are very knowledgeable about the food. I've eaten at Sunpower twice and find their food to be a little on the sweet side. I had the pizza which was okay. The crust is now made of seeds - no nuts. I picked the cookies as my side and wasn't impressed. The cacao was very bitter. The cinnamon was good. The cacao super food shake was excellent! Tasty and filling. So the food here doesn't move me. I came here on opening night and I have to say the new location is amazing! Great energy and space! The Sunburger literally tastes better than an In 'n' Out burger........ The Sun pad thai is still amazing and I don't eat tofu, but when its organic and honey glazed, I can't pass on the opportunity. Before I get to the food, I have to say the service at Sun Cafe' was really great! We went in for a late lunch which turned out to be an early dinner. We utilized street parking around the corner as parking is always an issue along Ventura Blvd. but the restaurant does have some parking as you enter their property. In fact, the parking kind of blocks your view of the restaurant and you might think you need to check the prescription on your glasses but do not despair, the restaurant is there. We were welcomed by a lovely hostess as we entered the doorway. We were seated and greeted by our server promptly and informed of the specials. All tables have water and they have a good selection of drinks. We ordered and visited in a very comfortable setting inside. The outside has a nice covered dining area that feels like you are outside in a private garden setting even though you are only a stones throw from the boulevard. Now onto the food. The starter of BBQ cauliflower arrived. I believe it was a raw cauliflower with a hot bbq sauce and chopped pickle sauce. Tangy with proper spice. Not too sweet. The entree's were pretty great. I had the chef special polenta with crimini mushroom, tomato and broccolini - really good! My wife had the GF pizza margharitta. She loved it. Remember, all these foods are vegan, and organic and done really well. So about price, it's a little expensive but it's so hard to find a place that can do so well in preparing vegan dishes with creativity so I still highly recommend you give this place a try. So valet driver is rude, very rude. I also saw him scrape a car... So pass on the valet if you can. The patio is pretty and they allow dogs so they can have 2 stars for that. Server was nice but hostess was not. Ok so now the food Got the fiesta burger on a brioche bun. It was gross. Patty was ok but bun was stale and gross like a rock. There was only 1 people eve of jalapeño in my burger. I asked the waitress what was In the green salad and she said spinach and raddichio but there was arugula and I hate arugula, but nobody came to ask how my food was, someone just came to see if I'm done and take away my plate. The new location is pretty but it's definitely a different vibe, not as friendly as the original and food quality has gone down. Great place! I went here with my friend a few months ago and was pleasantly surprised. I have been to many vegan restaurants so I was excited to see what this one had to offer. We got a pizza and lettuce tacos. I was shocked to see how raw everything was. Everything was so healthy and fresh! The tacos were delicious and the pizza was good but I didn't like the crust. It took us a while to find the place because the sign isn't that big. Parking was rather easy because there are lots nearby. This place is great! They have tasty raw and cooked options! I always imagined kelp noodles would taste seaweed-y, but it tastes like amazing amazing pasta! So far, nothing I've eaten here has been a miss. I've been to a few raw restaurants where I left still starving (and broke). I would not say that this was the case for Suncafe! Not hugely overpriced, and a decent amount of food! Great service too! The staff is super knowledgeable about the menu. Downside - no bathroom and street metered parking only. Never having tried raw food before, I'll admit I was skeptical and nervous about going here, but it was highly recommended by one of my co-workers and I trust her taste in food. She wasn't wrong - this place is simply AWESOME! I went there today for lunch with another co-worker and ordered the BLT Sandwich on their fluffy whole wheat bun with a side of veggies and dip and literally everything - each ingredient - was tasty, flavorful and downright delicious. How they manage to make so many different options and make them so tasty is like the 8th wonder of the world to me. I mean, they make cheese and mayo out of cashews?! How, what, how?! And it's YUMMY! Way tastier than regular cheese and mayo! My co-worker ordered the Sun Burger (i.e. veggie burger) and she said it was the best veggie burger she's ever had. The decor is charming: the walls are the perfect and inviting shade of peach, and it's almost vintage-y, but not in a snobbish way. It felt like we were sitting in a friend's living room at their home. I prefer vegetarian food but soy and tofu don't suit my stomach very well - now, I'll never have to worry about that. SunCafe just became my new favorite lunch place and I can't wait to try their other items on my next adventures there. And I can walk there from work; what more could a gal ask for? read more

WINNER OF THE GLUTEN-FREE/VEGAN MAC N CHEESE CHALLENGE: I am a self-appointed gf/v mac n cheese ("GFVMNC") connoisseur and have taken upon myself the challenge of eating all GFVMNC available in Los Angeles. I rate all GFVMNC either amazing, good, whatevz, or gross. I am proud to say that Sun Cafe has the #1 GFVMNC in Los Angeles, and is rated AMAZING. No words for this. Best mac and cheese ever. Seriously, it's incredible. Note that tempeh version is not GF, as the tempeh is marinated in part with soy sauce. I am a gluten-free vegan, and SunCafe is one of my staples. GLUTEN-FREE MENU: This restaurant designates gluten-free items on its menu. VEGAN MENU: This restaurant is 100% vegan, featuring a one-half raw and one-half cooked menu. ON RAW FOOD: I historically came to Sun Cafe for delicious raw vegan meals (my favs include Kale Colossus, Raw Nachos, Caesar Salad, and Sun Burger with lettuce-leaf bun). If you are 80-10-10 or HCLF, you will have a hard time with the raw menu, but can certainly modify to better accommodate your preferred fat intake (although I don't think anything but juices are strictly low fat). Note that when I order Kale Colossus, I hold the dressings and nut meat. If you are used to typical "gourmet raw food", then you will be in heaven here. DRINK THIS SMOOTHIE: Sweet Kale Shack is the best shake ever. I like to get it sweetened with dates instead of agave. I ordered takeout from here after an interview at the Hilton Universal. The staff was really friendly and my food was ready super fast. From what I saw of the inside it looked cozy and warm with a nice dim ambiance. I ordered the mint shamrock smoothie which definitely held up to all its hype. It was creamy and smooth and had a nice mint flavor that was just sweet enough to be reminiscent of mint ice cream but not quite. I also ordered the supreme pizza on the pita crust. The crust was really nice and crunchy and a perfect base for the pizza. The sunrizo was surprisingly delicious as well. The sauce was really good too. I would definitely order it again. I had the veggie sticks and dip as my side which were nice. The dip was kind of like a tangy hummus. WOW. So impressed with this place!!! I follow the Paleolithic (or Caveman) diet which excludes all grains & legumes. Most meat substitutes are usually made from grains or legumes so I was sceptical they would have much for me to choose from. My bf had tried their "grain free" pizza & loved it. I figured I could always go with a salad, if nothing else, & begrudgingly agreed to go for dinner. Once I started looking over their menu, I actually noticed many "grain free" options. A lot of their stuff is made from nuts & seeds rather than grains & legumes =) I got the pad thai with kelp noodles & OMG it was amazing! I am now searching for a good source of these noodles so I can add them into my repertoire (they are very similar to asian style rice noodles). The fresh cracked coconut juice was super yummy! My bf went with the grain free mexican style pizza & LOVED it! The texture of the fau-rizo was not like regular chorizo but the flavor was an exact match ~ weird! (in a good way). BEST vegan mac and cheese I've ever had. Add tempeh bacon and you won't regret it. Anyone who hates on this mac and cheese I WILL FIGHT THEM! I'm vegan and I've tried many vegan mac and cheese's from store bought to very expensive ones at high end vegan restaurants and this one takes the cake. A lot of vegan macs that use cashew or potato based "cheeses" tend to have a slight sweeter flavor that I don't care for, but this mac and cheese did not have that. It was the closest to actually tasting like cheese without being super artificial and gooey like the store bought vegan mac and cheeses. Sure the portion was small for the price but it was so worth it! I was so surprised at how good it was. I heard great things about it but WOW. I loved every bit of it and I'm already dying to go back and order more. I also ordered the pesto pizza and it was amazing as well. I haven't had pesto since before I went vegan and I missed it so much. This pizza definitely satisfied my craving. It was delicious and unbelievably vegan. I had the cookie dough cheesecake for dessert and it was good. It was coconut based and you could definitely tell. I'm not really a fan of coconut, but for some reason I was very into this cheesecake. It is, however, a lot more dense than traditional cheesecake, but I didn't mind. It was still great. The service was quick and friendly as well. But it was a little too hot inside the restaurant when I went for dinner. They are pretty pricey but for a sit down vegan restaurant with good quality food and types of food that I like, this is one of the best options I've found. Hands down one of the absolute best meals I've ever had in my life. I went here with some friends before seeing a concert at the Gibson Ampitheatre. It was pretty busy so we had to wait quite a while, but the staff was very friendly and helpful, and it was completely worth the wait. I ordered the roasted vegetable curry with quinoa and it was fantastically amazing. I wish I was a better food reviewer to really describe what was good about it, but all I can say is that it was simply perfect. I love all kinds of food but have a pretty sensitive stomach and usually most food will make me feel kind of bloated and nauseous after eating it, but I felt great after eating this. It was super delicious without being too salty or too much of anything else. The quinoa was cooked perfectly - fluffy with a great texture. It doesn't turn out this way when I cook it at home! It really hit the spot -- very comforting and yummy, yet nutritious and wholesome. The ambiance is very nice -- it's in between casual and formal. It has dim lighting with a sort of romantic nice ambiance and candlelight, but it's definitely still somewhere you can walk in wearing jeans and not feel out of place. A great place to bring friends or have a date. In conclusion I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. I have to say, if this were a regular restaurant I might give it 3 stars --service can be a little sparse. They're fine when only a few people are there, but when it's busy, they just don't have the manpower to deal with it. Also, I've tried--4 or 5 times to call in a take-out order and I've never (ever!) gotten through. This seems like a great way to make easy money for a restaurant as the overhead is pretty limited to just a call and the cook. But they clearly just don't have the people to handle this yet. Hopefully that'll come later. Also, parking sitch isn't great--pay attention especially in the daytime as the area is famous for an overly gestapo-like parking meter guy who's always there and nails everyone pretty quick. read more

My boyfriend and I tried this place the other day on our way out of town and we enjoyed it! We got the mexican pizza and BLT sandwich. Neither of us are vegan or even vegetarian, but we are huge fans of healthy, nutritious organic/raw food. That particular day we had both pulled an almost all nighter helping our friends with last minute wedding preparations and we were pretty wasted from the lack of sleep. We pulled up yelp and this place popped up as close by and had great ratings. We knew we needed some energy food that was going to boost our immune systems and help us recover from the all nighter so we headed straight over. The BLT was good, the "bacon" wasnt my favorite, but thats only because Im not a big fan of sweet "meat" things. My boyfriend really enjoyed it and he LOVES bacon. The Mexican Pizza was my personal favorite. Suuuuper YUM! The raw crust is incredible! And the "cheese" sauce was amazing too. Ive been thinking about this Pizza since we stopped in and I think Im going to have to go back soon to get it again! It's more like a flat tostada with the crunchy raw crust, but not matter what its called its still YUM! The service was fine, I think they could have been a little more attentive to our water bottle - we drink tons of water and emptied it pretty quick. But we didnt have to go without for too long. After our meal was over we ordered two superfood shakes to go for some extra fuel for the drive we had to make. I dont remember what my boyfriend got, but I got the Cacao Superfood and it was AMAAAAZZING. I wish I could have that every time I crave a "chocolate" shake.
