While looking for a local bakery that sells cake for Mother's day, I noticed the Taiwanese iconic name of Sunmerry showing up in my results feed. I had a pleasant experience in visiting a local branch in Taiwan a few years back, so it was a no brainer for me to give this particular establishment a visit. I called 30 minutes ahead to confirm that they still had cakes in stock. This Sunmerry branch is located in the center of the Atlantic Time Square Plaza. Underground parking was ample due to COVID. I easily noticed the store entrance as this was the only place that had a line of people waiting outside in its proximity, right after you walk up the escalators. I waited roughly 15 minutes after arriving around 4:45pm before I stepped inside the store. While waiting, there were sign advocating for COVID safety measures, i.e. only 5 guests at all times, 6 feet apart, face masks required, Inside, there were rows of shelves to the right, typical of your Asian bakeries. However, there was a very low amount of pastries available in stock. If you were looking for something particular, you probably won't be able to find it. A bolo bao caught my eye (official name was Bolo Milk Butter - $2.20). Memories of me eating a bolo bao with ice cream inside, one of the most delicious dessert I had at a Taiwanese night market, came into mind. I quickly grabbed one and went on to decide which cake I wanted. There were three rows of cake behind a plastic display. The options were Strawberry Cream Blossom Cake (Mother's day special), Tiramisu, Black Forest, and two more that I can't recall. I eventually went with the Strawberry Cream Cake - $32 (the website sold me on the Mother's day special) but without the Blossom decoration since it was $4 cheaper and I ain't paying $4 extra for frosting. The cashier who treated me was very nice. I asked about the Ice Cream Puff - Mango and she told me that it was in the refrigerator back by the shelves. She saved my place in line while I went to check out the goods, which ended up looking disappointing (frozen dessert) so I quickly return back to pay for my items and left. The Bolo Milk Butter was an interesting experience. With the first bite, you notice that it is pretty much all bread and that it is soft. Second bite, you get the same bread taste with a kick of chopped peanuts. Third bite, you taste the crust of the pineapple bun and now you are getting excited to taste how everything will mix in. Fourth bite, you notice there is a filling inside but can't tell what it is. Fifth bite, a dense, rich taste of soft solidified custard bursts into your mouth. Not the creamy, custard fillings you get from the custard bao's at dim sum, but the dried, dense version you get from random Chinese pastries that your mom buys growing up as a kid. There was also too much of this custard aggregated into the middle (think ice cream scoop of condensed custard). Overall, this bao was a hot mess but would've been a lot tastier had the taste been better spread apart. The Strawberry Cream Cake, which was eaten later at home, was a very pretty cake. This is a good sized, 8-inch cake, that you get for $32. When you pull the cake out of the box, you can smell the rich frosting right away. The taste, however, was also a very underwhelming experience compared to its appearance. The cake faced the same issue where there are some parts where there is too much cake and other parts where there are too much frosting. At the end of the experience, you end up feeling like you ate something way too creamy but not in a good way. I definitely recommend others to give Sunmmery a visit for the variety of options, clean interior, and ease of access and service; however, I would not come back personally for pastries unless I happened to be around the area or in urgent need of another cake. read more

Located in the Atlantic Square Shopping center, among other tea houses, I happen to walk in just because I saw their display of Taiwanese Bakery. Oh my. To my surprise, it had a lot of pastries in their store front. Mochi taro, croissants, bola rolls, were some of the items I remembered. I was extremely full from lunch, but their merry milk tea and Mochi taro caught my attention. I'm usually not a milk tea person, since most tea houses I've tried are usually full of milk and sugar, but this was different. It had the right amount of milk, sugar, tea and ice, I devoured the whole tea without knowing. Their slushed ice in the tea made it cold enough to every last sip. As I was driving home, I took a bite of the Mochi taro, and let me tell you, if i wasn't 45 min away, I Would have made a U turn. My friend told me that this place just started selling mochi donuts. We recently tried mochi donuts from another place in SGV and really liked them so we wanted to try here as well. I also saw that for Labor Day Weekend, they were doing a buy 1 get 1 free Matcha Watermelon boba beverage at all California locations excluding Sunmerry Coffee Brea. So we wanted to give that drink a try, too. When we got there, we saw that the store was practicing social distancing with only 5 people in the store max at a time. There's 2 sections to line up - one to order and one to pickup. We didn't realize which was which and went to the wrong counter. A customer kindly pointed out where to get in line to order and we got in the correct line. Before it was time to order I asked if they had more of these mochi donuts (pointing at the black sesame ones) and they said yes. When it was almost our turn to order, we saw a man ask if they had anymore and the employee told him it was what was on the counter. So I quickly scooped up the last 2 black sesame mochi dounts, 2 matcha, 1 mango and 1 cookies and creme. The sign showed they make a shredded pork one, which I would've loved to try but it was sold out. My friend said of course, we're in an Asian city so that's the first to go. Been here number of times but came here this time specifically for: Boba Eggtarts -set of 2 is $6.50 Super Garlic Roll -$3.00 The girl behind the counter accidentally dropped by egg tarts. She thought twice about putting in inside my bag, but I had to tell her that I needed it for a picture (which they made me a new one so it was instagram worthy). BTW, they make these to order regardless and by steadily by hand. Hence, that's why it's so expensive. Definitely get all the brown sugar notes and tart is not too bad either. It's a novelty and sure, you can get a boba and a tart elsewhere and would be cheaper, but why would you? The Super Garlic roll is terrific. If you haven't seen the videos about this creamy, garlicky goodness. You obviously haven't been online recently. But some other places have a 4 pcs minimum at $2.50 and that would be an overkill for us. So I was happy to try this out for $3 and am happy to say it fills the creamy, garlicky, cheesy notes in all places. Don't let it sit too long, the oil will drown down the bread a bit but still delicious. BTW, there is a patio table for seating outside but it was only for two people. Review is for their "super garlic bread" w/ cream cheese only. Been seeing so many posts about this bread online and wanted to give it a try. Came to Sunmerry towards the end of day Saturday (current operating hours are 11am-7pm WEDS-SUN, according to their sign out front). Store allows 5 people in at a time and sanitizer is available by table near their entrance. I did see many people ordering their cakes, so I'll have to keep Sunmerry in mind for cakes in the future! They have ready to-go baked breads that are individually wrapped now due to COVID that are self-serve. The shelves had poster ads stating "Buy 3 get 1 Free" so I asked the cashier if that applies to the Super Garlic Bread, and she kindly obliged to give us the deal. 4 breads for $9, a pretty good deal! I chose to warm up the bread in the microwave quickly (~20 seconds) for the first taste, just to have the cheese & bread be warm. It was delicious! Savory with a hint of sweetness, garlic flavor is pretty pungent but I didn't mind it! We refrigerated the leftovers and saved for the next day. We microwaved the leftovers a little longer (~30 seconds), since they'd been refrigerated, and it was still delicious. Definitely a guilty pleasure carb load! read more

I stopped by Sunmerry because I wanted to join the hype train and try the cream cheese garlic bread. I've been seeing many posts on social media that it's a must try. I purchased 2 garlic bread and 1 of the Japanese cheese cake (I was craving Uncle Tetsu). The garlic bread did not disappoint and definitely worth the hype. I warmed it up for 30 seconds per instructions but I think it was overkill, 20 would've sufficed. The bread was cheesy, buttery, and filled with garlic flavor. It's definitely worth the $3! Definitely come back for the bread when I'm near the Atlantic Time Square plaza. The Japanese cheese cake was okay but isn't comparable to Uncle Tetsu. Sunmerry is a carb lovers dream! The minute you walk in, you'll find tons of carb-loaded options for your enjoyment. The way this space is setup is simple: Grab a tray, grab a wax paper for to line your tray, grab a tong, select your carb loaded goodies! First time at this location. Park on level P2 right by the escalators and all you have to do is take a right and you're there! Because of COVID-19, only a maximum of 5 patrons are allowed in the store at a time. By the entrance, there are self serve hand sanitizer and bread boxes for your use. I had ordered ahead online and walked right up to the counter. I only interacted with one employee there and she was very friendly. My boba tart had turned in its side in the bag she passed me and she quickly offered to get me a replacement so the pastry looked more presentable. The boba tart is between okay and good. It's not great. Boba was nice and chewy, tea tart had that earl grey egg-y flavor, but the two reaaaaallly don't need to be put together. Also ordered the garlic bread (pictured) and ate it without heating. It's definitely garlicky and has a hint of sweetness if that makes sense. Still good, though. Both boba tart and garlic bread are messy to eat. I'd say if you're in the area, try them both for yourself. However, I wouldn't make the drive out just to get these. Meaning, limited seating and register is still at the front and not in it's original location next to the drink station. Once again, pastries are fresh and pre-packaged unlike the beforetimes. For June 2022, they are having a "stimulus package" promotion, which is just a sweet discount for their baked goods. Baked goods cost $2, $2.50, and $3 depending on what you buy. I really didn't want to leave this review because I love the desserts and drink but when I realized it was a chain I figured I'll just never come back to this location again. 1st time I came here I fell in with the hokkaido cake and the ube cold brew. Loved it so much I came back days later and I wish I never had. I ordered the cold brew again and when I got to the end of the drink I swallowed what I thought was just an ice cube to find out there were pieces of plastic at the bottom of my drink. I tried calling thier number but it doesn't ring and goes automatically to a voicemail box that isn't step up. I'm sad that this happened because the convince of this location but I guess I'll just drive out to a different location. Its been over 24 hours and i still feel the plastic in my throat ugh.... The matcha tiramisu cake is delicious! Two of my favorite flavors combined in one cake, yum! We called 2 days in advance to order an 8" cake because we wanted writing on it. They don't charge extra for the writing and they write on a piece of chocolate that they put on top of the cake. It's a good thing they did that instead of writing directly on the cake because they messed up the spelling of "congratulations" and instead it said "congradulation." Luckily they were able to put a new piece of chocolate on top and kind of fix it within 15 minutes. I say "kind of" because they still missed the "s" at the end. Maybe next time I'll order online instead of over the phone. The cake itself was moist, not too sweet, and had a nice thick layer of matcha on top. I love Sunmerry and am a fan of their breads but they seem to have zero selection at this location. It's probably because of Covid and having less customers so they don't want to make too much and end up wasting food. I guess I need try to go earlier to see if they have my usual selection of goodies. Anything you get will be good, sweet or savory, so be adventurous and get anything. The only thing I don't like here are the garlic butter bread thing (way too oily), and the boba egg tart. I can't believe they charge $6.50 for those things! They don't taste that great and that cookie stick on top becomes a soggy mess. I say stick with the regular egg tarts. Those taste great. I wasn't impressed with the Dalgona coffee at this location. I've only had it at the Rowland Heights location and it is sooooo good there! I bought it here this weekend and there was no flavor, no sweetness. I didn't even finish it because it tasted so bleh... I also bought the mochi donuts to try (new and exclusive to the MP location) in the matcha, sesame and mango flavors. They were ok, really dense and chewy. Our first time here! We dropped by while waiting for our take-out order from Atlantic Dim Sum nearby. This place is so cute and even has bakery!! We ordered the Taro Milk Tea with Boba & Salted Cheese, and also picked up the display Taro Pudding 8-inch cake. I really loves the boba, tasted fresh and Taro was very flavorful. The Taro pudding cake was a bit dry on the layers, but the pudding itself was good. Overall would def go back to try different bakeries and boba. read more

I can only speak on behalf of my Happy Lemon tea experience but if you love lemon flavored drinks like me, this place is heaven for you. So Sunmerry Bakery and Happy Lemon is a mix of a bakery and drink place. The drinks are basically on the east side of the building and the bakery is basically in the center - north side. The bakery does look delicious though. For the drink itself, I ordered a freshly squeezed lemon jasmine tea. The tea was amazing, it wasn't overly powered by the lemon like as you would with a lemonade mixed drink and it wasn't super sweet. It was just a perfect blend of lemon and tea. I asked for no-ice and they didn't leave a gap because I didn't have ice. The creation of the drink was quick and also the pricing of the drinks are fairly inexpensive. Since this is basically a to-go style place, there is no service. Inside there is a small seating area which is a nice touch. Inside is very clean and modern looking. It isn't too loud where you can't have a conversation. Parking for this place is in the Atlantic Time Square Plaza which means there is a huge underground parking structure. Overall, if you love lemon, you should definitely come to this place. 5/5! read more

This is still one of the better bakeries in the SGV. There is a good selection of bread and a good amount of drinks. What irks me the most about this specific Happy Lemon is every once in a while, the drinks do not seal!!! I got a drink and when I shook it, the drink came out because it wasn't sealed properly. This is the third time that it happened and it's just ridiculous because the first time it spilled on my laptop. The person at the front was able to remake my drink and was able to give me a towel to wipe up my laptop and table but there was no apology. The second and third times, it spilled on my clothes and I was already home before I could complain. For a drink that is $5, I would hope that it would be SEALED when I shake it. I can always count on leaving here happier and satisfied. The cranberry lemon cream cheese pastry is hands down my favorite here. I haven't seen this at any where else yet. My go to drink that is consistently made to perfection is the Green milk tea with or without salted cheese adjusted with 70 sugar and less ice. When I want something more fruity and sweet I would get the strawberry drinks. I haven't come across another place with strawberry drinks that were tasty like Happy Lemon.
